第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)All over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners. Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners.
Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quiet if grown-ups were
talking. Today, well-mannered children have more freedom.
Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places. Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp(打嗝)” after you finish eating. Burping would show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please.” In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat. What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you. Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one. The people will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.
Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People need ways to show that they want to be friends.
1、How did polite children behave?
A.By looking into adults’ eyes while talking
B.By keeping silent while adults were talking
C.By slipping into the house without being heard
D.By not opening their mouths until spoken to
2、Which custom should we follow in order to look well-mannered?
A.Saying “Excuse me” on burping in Mongolia
B.Inviting guests to dinner together in Polynesia
C.Talking with a friend before he completes things in East Africa
D.Accepting an eating invitation in Arabia
3、What can we infer from the text?
A.Hear much, speak little
B.Love me, love my dog
C.When in Rome do as the Romans do
D.Do what you ought to and come what can
22.(8分)I decided to ski to the North Pole. It was after I saw an advertisement in a newspaper looking for people to join a team to ski 350 miles to the North Pole. Back in 1996, there had never been a woman from the U.K. who had accomplished this challenge. I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your
flesh in seconds, so I sent off for the application form.
The ap plication form full of pictures of male explorers arrived. The words “Are you man enough for the ultimate (极端的) challenge?”made me angry and even more determined to get on the team.
Over 500 individuals applied for a place in the team, and the selection process included physical and psychological tests designed to pick the best group. In one test, there was a huge rope ladder we had to climb, and I froze at the top because I have a fear of heights. I thought my hopes were fading as most other applicants sailed past, leaving me behind. But two others helped me over, and later I found out that the organizers were not looking for amazing individuals, but great team players, and this moment had shown them who would take care of others in the team.
I had revealed (展示) my weakness, and in a place like the Arctic, you have to be yourself, as there is nowhere to hide. These personalities of asking for help and showing weakness are necessary for women to master.
I realized that by being myself, I could succeed. I was selected for the team. I realized that I could achieve more than I ever imagined --- more importantly, by sharing my story with others, I could inspire them to take a step into the new world and reveal more of their abilities.
1、How did the author react on seeing the advertisement?
A.She got cross. B.She was determined.

C.Merciful. D.Disturbing.

A.To inspire us to prepare for our future goal.
B.To advise women how to turn to others.
C.To make suggestions to her team members.
D.To encourage people to explore the unknown.

24.(8分)Persuasion is to convince someone to agree with you, just like art which also calls for special techniques to accomplish. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.
Ethos is a speaker’s w ay of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education she has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.
Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make the viewer feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money.
Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me “.
Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.
1、What do persuasion and art have in common?
A.They both entertain the audience.
B.They both require great skill to achieve.
C.They both demand full attention from the audience.
D.They were both common topics of ancient Greek Writers.
2、How is a speaker able to show his ethos to the audience?
A.By expressing his sympathy with the audience.
B.By telling the audience about his personal preference.
C.By using beautiful language to make his statements attractive.
D.By showing his knowledge and experience related to the topic.
3、What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?
A.Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.
B.Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.
C.Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.
D.Political leaders mostly use pathos to persuade their audience.
4、An advertisement for washing powder which claims that “scientific tests show that our powder kills 95% of all bacteria” is mainly using .
A.ethos B.pathos
C.logos D.a combination of all three
(10分)Scientists are preparing to launch the world's first machine to clean up the planet's largest mass of ocean 25.
plastic.
The experts believe the machine should be able to collect half of the detritus in the patch – about 40,000 metric tons – within five years. In the past few weeks they have been busy welding together giant tubes that will sit on the surface of the sea and form the skeleton of the machine, creating the largest floating barrier ever made。
The system, originally dreamed up by Mr. Slat, will be shipped out this summer to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Hawaii and California, and which contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic. It will be the first ever attempt to tackle the patch since it was discovered in 1997.
Mr. Slat was 16 and still at school when he was diving in Greece and first saw for himself the amount of plastic polluting the sea. “There were more bags than fish down there,” he recalls. Two years later he came up w ith a solution, quit university after six months and set up The Ocean Cleanup as a company. Mr. Slat, 23, says the first plastic to arrive on shore will be a major milestone. “We as a humanity created this problem, so I think it's our responsibility also t o help solve it,” he said.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) spans 617,763 sq miles - more than twice the size of France, and contains at least 79,000 tons of plastic, research found last month. Most of it is made up of “ghost gear” – parts of abandoned and lost fishing gear, such as nets and ropes – often from illegal fishing vessels.
Ghost gear kills more than 100,000 whales, dolphins and seals each year, according to scientific surveys. Seabirds and other marine life are increasingly being found dead with stomachs full of small pieces of plastic. Creatures eat plastic discarded in the sea thinking it’s food but then starve to death because they are not feeding properly. Others are trapped and die of starvation or are strangled or suffocated by ghost gear.

A.because they were killed by Ghost gear.
B.because they were suffocated by ghost gear.
C.because they didn't like eating plastic.
D.because they are not feeding properly.
4、What is the main idea of the Passage?
A.news about the first machine to clean up ocean plastic.

Dear Editor,
Now many students have iPods and regard them as their most favorites. Use an iPod, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read it on the screen. Apparently, it is great help to our study, especial to our English listening.
Some students, however, bring their iPods to classroom and listen to music, which makes the teacher and other students greatly annoying. What’s b ad, some of them even waste precious time in class play video games.
In my opinion, the classroom is a place that students should concentrate in study. Furthermore, some rules should be made to guide the students to use iPods properly.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

24、About three decades ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the twowheel way of transport's popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.
But recent months have seen a revival of the bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing to
cycle instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing systems has brought the trend to a new level.
People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphones. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They're popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile problem”,which refers to the final leg of a person's journey.
However, the systems have also led to problems such as illegal parking, damage and theft. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were placed under arrest for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes.
“Bikesharing is a greener method of transport and provides a userfriendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, viceminister of transport. “But it's a combin ation of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.”
Now, Chinese service operators are trying to handle these problems. For example, a bike-sharing company called Mobike sets a 100-point credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.
