Guilin
A Brief Introduction
(1)Location
Geographically, Guilin is situated in the southwest of Nanling Mountain range or northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It sits at the southern end of Hunan-Guangxi Corridor and borders Hunan province to its northeast. The Hunan-Guangxi Railway runs across Lijiang River and the Greater Guilin area is connected by Guiyang-Guangzhou High-speed Railway, which is currently under construction, as well as National Highways G321, G322 and G323. Its average height is 150 m above sea level. In addition to the northeast part of Hunan Province, Guilin also borders the cities of Liuzhou and Laibin to its southwest and the cities of Wuzhou and Hezhou to its southeast.
(2)Cities
Situated at the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and at the southern end of Hunan-Guangxi Corridor, Guilin covers an administrative area of 27, 809 km2 with five districts and 12 counties under its administration and has a total population of 4,950,000. Having a complex terrain and various topographic features, Guilin is surrounded by hills and mountains on all four sides, and moves downward from west to east while Lijiang River and Yi River travel from north to south. The area boasts lush virgin forests, spectacular peaks, tranquil valleys, bubbling streams, gushing waterfalls and imposing rich terraces. This place of wonder is inhabited by dozens of ethnic minority groups, like Zhuang, Yao, Miao and Dong communities.
From a tourist perspective,richly-endowed Guilin has the following four features. First, the typical Karst and Danxia landscapes have given Guilin its unique and unmatchable beauty as can be seen in its green hills, clear waters, bizarre caves and fantastic rocks, thus giving the city an incomparable reputation throughout the world. Second, profound cultural and historic heritage is beautifully integrated into abundant natural resources here, which finds its best expression in such famous scenic areas as Lijiang River, Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk Hill, Longji Terraced Fields,
Bajiaozhai Village, Lingqu Canal, Museum of Guihai Tablets Forest and Jingjiang Prince City. Third. With a proper layout and easy access, cityscape and scenic areas add beauty and charm to each other. Fourth, sights are multi-layered and highly distinctive.
(3)Administrative Divisions
Guilin is not only a world-famous tourist city as well as a historic and cultural city in China but also a regional center in politics, economy, culture, science and technology in northeast Guangxi and the border area between Guangxi and Hunan. Under the administration of Guilin municipal government, there are 5 districts (Xiufeng, Diecai, Xiangshan, Qixing and Yanshan) and 12 (autonomous) counties (Lingui, Yangshuo, Lingchuan, Quanzhou, Xing'an, Yongfu, Guanyang, Longsheng, Ziyuan, Pingle, Lipu and Gongcheng). Under the 12 counties, there are 13 neighborhood offices, 75 towns, 44 villages, 15 ethnic villages, 228 community committees, and 1654 village committees. The area has a total population of 5.128 million among which 1.252 million live in the urban area.。
