My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be
a true friend to someone whose n ame w e didn’t know. How wrong we w ere! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking.?
Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: where’s the silent woman who sits at the front and never replies to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.?
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the
bus hand in hand. When they get off, they’re still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape showed that she’d given birth to the child.
We even felt a little proud at the thought of our extended
family.?
For many m onths, our only sadness lay in our being unable
to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the
front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It
was the woman from the bus.?
We greeted her with friendly familiarity we’d shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When
she spoke, the words escaped from her lips with difficulty. All at once we realized why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.?
Over dinner, we learned the stay of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home.
She missed him very much, she explained.?
“I love him, and he loves me, even though he doesn’t express it very well,” she spoke in a low voice. “Lots of us have that problem, don’t we? We d on’t say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that’s not good enough.”?
The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never
tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we
parted as friends?we shared names.

One morning a few years ago, Harvard President Neil Rudenstine overslept. For this busy man, it was a sort of alarm: after years of non-stop hard work, he might wear himself out
and die an early death.
Only after a week’s leave - during which he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach - was Rudenstine able to return to work.
In our modern life, we h ave lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: “I am so busy.”
We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with
stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unable to find time to relax -
this has become the model of a successful life.
Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing us with strength,
the quiet giving us wisdom.
How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week ― for followers of some religions ― for rest and praying. It is a
day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks,
share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces
at work taking care of the world.
Rest is a spiritual and biological need, however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may f eel terribly guilty when w e take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact,
“Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.
65. The “alarm” in the first paragraph refers to “ ___________ ”.
A. a signal of stress
B. a warning of danger
C. a sign of age
D. a spread of disease
66. According to Paragraph 4, a successful person is one

A. think that taking a rest means lacking ambitions
B. fail to realize that rest is a necessary part of life
C. fail to realize that religions force them to rest
D. think that taking a rest means being lazy
68. What is the main idea of this passage
A. We should balance work with rest
B. The Sabbath gives us permission to rest.
C. It is silly of people to say “I am so busy.”
D. We should be available to our family and friends.

There is an old saying in English: "laughter is the best medicine " until recently, few people took the saying very
seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to investigate
laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have
found evidence that laughter really can improve people's health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter
on the body. People watched funny films, while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscle. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise.
It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of
breathing, it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be capable of reducing the effects of o pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who
listened to different radio programs. The group which tolerate the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to
a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins 内啡肽 in the brain.
These are natural chemicals which decrease both stress and
pain.
There is also some evidence to suggest that laughter
helps the body's immune 免疫system , that is, the system which fights infection. In an experiment, one group of students watched a funny video while another group served as the control group-in other words, a group with which to compare the first
group. Doctors checked the blood of the student in both groups and found that the people in the group that watched the video
had an increase in the activity of their white blood cells, that is, the cell which fight infection.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists 精神病学家in the United Stated now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that
even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to
those caused by laughter

You want to have fun and adventure and so you decide to
travel somewhere to do it. Sounds like a simple enough thing.
And basically it is. But what is adventure? That is the key here and the answer can be different for different peopleFor those
who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different
meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel
types that you can find include such adventure travel as white water rafting 白浪漂流, kayaking or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For this type of person, adventure
travel almost always includes something physical. Often the
goal is to push their body’s limits and test their individual enduranceFor those who less want to climb mountains, adventure travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local
festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed traveler who enjoys peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope 范围 of the traveler’s lifestyle defines 定义 adventureAdventure travel
is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the person’s physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but
that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for YOU ? not for the person next to youDo not sit home this year when
vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine and
try something new. If you usually spend your vacation sunbathing on a beach, try hiking, instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your comfort zone and head out on an adventure vacation.
