If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span — about 12 to 15 years long — than humans, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.
Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech is planning to introduce their business toUKdog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.
Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg.Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died.
The whole process takes less than a day, but it comes at a shockingly high price — around £63,000 (614,000 yuan). But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and access them at a later date. Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, toldThe Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect replica of the original one.
Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes,
personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both “random elements [that] cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom Kirkwood atNewcastle University,UK, toldThe Telegraph.
Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all.
Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go.”
4. According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is ______.

On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty Hill and her husband Barney were driving home through the White Mountains from Niagara Falls. They were travelling on anearly deserted two-lane highway when Betty noticed a steady light in the sky that was getting bigger and brighter.
She thought it was a planet or a star. Barney, stimulated at her excitement, said it was probably just a wandering aeroplane. Whatever it was, it appeared to be following them.
They stopped their car for a closer look. What they said happened next, changed their lives. The flying object was noiseless. It appeared to be spinning. It was as big as a jet but shaped like a pancake.
So formed the tale of Betty Hill, a New Hampshire social worker who, with Barney, a postal worker, claimed to be kidnapped by aliens, who were from outer space, on a moonlit night about 60 years ago.
After reluctantly going public with her experience, Hill, who died of cancer at her New Hampshire home, aged 85, became a celebrity on the UFO circuit and was known as the “first lady of UFOs”.
Intriguingly, at the time of the incident, the Hills remembered nothing except that they had spied a strange object in the sky. Later, troubled by nightmares and other stress-related pains, the couple underwenthypnosis(催眠) where the full story came out with the aid of Boston psychiatrist Benjamin Simon, an expert in medical hypnosis.
On their night of contact the Hills arrived homeat 5 a.m., unable to account for two lost hours. They were also confused by the odd marks on their telescopes, deep signs on the tops of Barney’s best shoes, Betty’s torn dress and strange circular markings on their car that made the needle of a compass jump wildly.
After seeing them for six months, the psychiatrist concluded the Hills’ lost memory about the hours they lost on that night in 1961 “appeared to involve an amazing experience on the part of both of the Hills”. Whether the experience had been fantasy or reality, Simon could not say, but he said he was convinced they had not been lying. He guessed that it had been a kind of shared dream.
Reports of aliens capturing humans and taking them aboard oddly shaped spacecraft were “comparatively rare” before 1975. After a movie, “The UFO Incident”, about the Hills came out, however, such stories increased.
8. When they saw the strange object in the sky, Barney and Betty Hill ______________.
A. were astonished at its strange flight and noise

C. realized immediately what the danger it might cause
D. showed curiosity in discovering what it really was

A. Ridiculously
B. Temporarily
C. Remarkably
D. Mysteriously
10. The Hills later sought the help of a psychiatrist because ______________.
A. they had lots of secrets in their lives after the strange experience
B. their lives were greatly disturbed by the unexpected experience
C. they wanted to share their unforgettable experience with the expert
D. they hoped to forget completely what had happened to them
11. This article was written in order to ______________.
A. describe an unusual event to the readers
B. convince readers of the existence of UFOs
C. record how people were caught by aliens
D. warn people of the dangers the UFOs cause
D
The prevalence of melanoma (黑素瘤) has been rapidly rising around the world for nearly a century. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise is concerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer.
Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.
What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in the winter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”
But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Finally, you should monitor your moles(痣). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99 % of chance to survive for five years. If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrical — sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.
12. What’s the main cause of the rise ofmelanoma?
A. The climate change.
B. Better detection.
C. More exposure to the sun.
D. The increase ofskin cancer.
13.What’s a mistake according to experts?
A. Applying sunscreen in summer.
B. Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.
C. Using sunscreen during lower risk months.
D. Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Prevention is better than cure.
B. Health is better than wealth.
C. A disease known is half cured.
D. When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Detect Melanoma.
B. Beware Winter Rays.
C. Monitor Your Moles.
D. Spend Less Time Outdoors.

选项中有两项为多余选项Food waste is a huge problem, especially in grocery stores. Americans waste about 40% of their food every year._____16_____ There are several factors that contributed to this colossal amount of waste.
Misleading labels
There is a big difference between a sell-by date and a use-by date. When a sell-by date passes, it doesn’t mean that the food is unsafe to eat. However, many people still think that they have to toss it. Grocery stores sometimes throw away food simply because it’s getting close to the sell-by date.___17___The Daily Table is a non-profit grocery store in Massachusetts that collects food from other grocers that is close to its sell-by date and sells it at a deeply-discounted price. This both provides food to people at low costs and keeps it from being thrown away.
___18___ Denmark has a volunteer-run food waste supermarket and is planning on opening two more. The Real Junk Food Project in the UK just opened its first food waste supermarket, where items have no set prices. Shoppers are allowed to pay what they can for the food.
Imperfect produce
___19___Yet in grocery stores most produce looks identical. Some food in grocery stores gets thrown out because it’s imperfect, or it doesn’t “look good.” The food is still fine to eat, but often ends up in the trash. The non-profit End Food Waste has a list of retailers all over America that sell imperfect produce. They also have a petition that you can sign which asks major grocery stores to consider selling imperfect food.
There are also subscription services where you can get “ugly” produce delivered to your door. Imperfect Produce and Hungry Harvest are both organizations working to recover food that would otherwise be thrown away.____20____
Consumer action
Not all the blame for food waste belongs to grocery stores. As consumers we can help to influence the type of food that stores sell. By buying food in less excess, food that is close to the sell-by date, and imperfect produce, we can help reduce food waste.
A. This idea has been gaining ground in Europe, as well.
B. Produce rarely grows in a way every plant looks the exact same.
C. There are several companies working to recover out-of-date food.
D. In 2008, 43 billion pounds of perfectly good food were thrown out of grocery stores.
E. This is a great way to reduce the waste of short-lived foods, which food banks often can’t accept.
F. A new law passed by the Senate makes it illegal for supermarkets to throw away or destroy unsold food.
G. Just one quarter of all wasted food could feed the 795 million people around the world who suffer from hunger.第二部分语言运用(共两节,满分45分)
