Identifying the chemical makeup of pigment (色素) used in ancient documents, paintings, and watercolor1 s is criticalto restoring and conserving the precious artworks. However, despite numerous efforts, scientists had been unable to determine the source of folium, a popular blue dye used to color1 manuscripts (手稿) in Europe during the middle ages — from the 5th to the 15th century. Now, a team of researchers fromPortugalhas finally uncovered the mysterious ingredient responsible for the gorgeous blueish-purple color1 that helped bring ancient illustrations and texts to life.
The research team began byporing overinstructions penned by European dye makers from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. They found what they were seeking in a 15th-century text entitledThe Book on How to Make All the Color Paints for Illuminating Books. However, translating the instructions was no easy task. It was written in the now extinct Judaeo-Portuguese language, and though the source of the dye was traced back to a plant, no name was mentioned.
However, by piecing together suggestions from the text, the scientists were able to determine that the dye was made from the bluish-green berries of the chrozophora tinctoria plant. After an extensive search, the team
found a few varieties of the plant growing along the roadside near the town ofMonsarazin southPortugal.
The detailed instructions gave the researchers critical clues — including the best time to pick the berries. “You need to squeeze the fruits, being careful not to break the seeds, and then to put them on linen (亚麻).” The scientist says the detail was important since broken seeds polluted the pigment, producing an inferior quality ink. The dyed linen, which was left to dry, was an efficient way to store and transport the pigment during ancient times. When needed, the artist would simply cut off a piece of the cloth and dip it with water to squeeze out the blue color1 .
Once the key ingredient had been identified, the researchers began to determine the dye’s molecular structure. To their surprise, they found that folium was not like any other known permanent blue dyes — it was an entirely new class of color1 , one they named chrozophoridin. “Chrozophoridin was used in ancient times to make a beautiful blue dye for painting.” the team wrote in the study. “Thus, we believe that this will not be our final word on this amazing plant and its story and that further discoveries will follow soon.”
4. The primary purpose of the study is to ________.
A. restore and conserve ancient precious artworks
B. determine the substance making up the folium
C. prove the ancient dye-making technique was organic
D. identify which class of color1 folium belongs to

B. It was the only kind made from wild berries.
C. It could be carried and used easily.
D. It was carefully squeezed from broken seeds.
7. The article is mainly about _________.
A. how the mystery ofa thousand-year-old blue dye was solved
B. why the researchers took the trouble to recreate the dye
C. what needs to be done to make an organic dye from a plant
D. when and where the discovery of the dye was made

First grader Gavin Clampett was diagnosed(诊断) with Tourette’s Syndrome at the age of five. Due to the neurological(神经的) disorder, he always experiences a variety of sudden uncontrolled movements and sounds.
The uncontrollable actions mean that he often gets dirty looks from strangers in public and kids make cruel comments on the school bus and in class. In an effort to prevent the unkind comments, Gavin’s mother, 32yearold Rebecca Clampett helped him make a video with his sister Brynn, nine, and played it to pupils at his school to help them understand the condition.
In the video, which Rebecca also shared on YouTube, Gavin’s sister Brynn starts by answering the question “What is Tourette’s Syndrome?” She explains, “It is a neurological disorder, which means it affects the brain so that a person makes unwanted movements. These are called tics(抽搐), but not like a tic that is found outside. These tics can be very noticeable or not very noticeable, quiet or loud.”
School can be hard for all kids. That canbe even harder for children like Gavin because they have to face people who laugh at them every single day. “I feel like my brother and every other kid who has Tourette’s Syndrome are brave. So be kind to them and don’t treat them differently because they are just like you”, Brynn says in the video.
Gavin concludes, “Everyone could play with someone. Some people think I can’t because I’m different but actually I can. Some are afraid that I will say dirty words, but actually I won’t. The disease bothers me a little, but I’m OK.”
8. What can we know about Tourette’s Syndrome?
A. It can be treated with drugs.
B. It is usually found at an early age.
C. People with it will say dirty words.
D. People with it can make uncontrolled sounds.
9. Because of the disease, others often _________.
A. take pity on Gavin
B. give a hand to Gavin
C. keep away from Gavin
D. look down upon Gavin
10. In the video, Gavin’s sister __________.
A. explains her brother’s disease
B. expresses her love for her brother
C. complains about unkind comments
D. encourages others to donate money
11. What can be used to best describe Gavin?
A. Lucky.
B. Helpless.
C. Optimistic.
D. Stubborn.

There are 195 countries in the world today but almost none of them have purple on their national flag. So what’s wrong with purple? It’s such a popular color1 today. Why would no country use it in their flag? The answer is really quite simple. Purple was just for too expensive.
The color1 purple has been associated with royalty power and wealth for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple’s high status comes from the rarity and cost of the dye (染料)originally used to produce it. Fabric traders got the dye from a small sea snail (海螺)that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean. More than 10,000 snails were needed to create just one gram of purple; not to mention a lot of work went into producing the dye, which made purple dye so expensive.
Since only wealthy rulers could afford to buy and wear the color1 , it became associated with the royal family. Sometimes, however, the dye was too expensive even for royalty. Third century Roman Emperor Aurelio famously wouldn’t allow his wife to buy a scarf made from purple silk because it cost three times its weight in gold. A single pound of dye cost three pounds of gold, which equals 56,000 dollars today. Therefore, even the richest countries couldn’t spend that much having purple on their flags.
The dye became more accessible to lower-class about a century and a half ago. In 1856, 18-year-old English chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created a man-made purple compound (化合物)while attemptingto produce an anti-malaria drug. He noticed that the compound could be used to dye fabrics, so he patented the dye, manufactured it and got rich. Purple dye was then mass-produced so everybody could afford it.
Till now, a handful of new national flags have been designed and a few of them have chosen to use purple in their flag. So don’t be making any bets just yet.
12. Why was color1 purple expensive in the past?
A. Because only royal families were allowed to wear purple.
B. Because it took a long time to get purple dye from gold.
C. Because purple was worth as much as its weight in gold.
D. Because purple dye used to be rare and hard to produce.
13. Why did Roman Emperor Aurelio forbid his wife to buy a purple scarf?
A. Because of poor quality.
B. Because of long tradition.
C. Because of bad taste.
D. Because of high price.
14. What is purple's situation now?
A. Purple has been widely used on national flags.
B. Purple dye is now affordable to ordinary people.
C. Royal family stop using purple because it’s toocommon.
D. Fewer snails are used to produce purple dye than before.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. No Purple Flags?
B. Purple vs Gold
C. How to Produce Purple Dye?
D. The Birth of Purple Color
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项Everybody yawns (打哈欠) – from unborn babies to great-grandparents. But why, exactly, do we yawn?_____16_____.
One theory (理论) is that when we are bored or tired, we just don’t breathe as deeply as we usually do. _____17_____.Therefore, yawning helps us bring more oxygen into the blood and move more carbon dioxide out of the blood.
Yawning, then, would be an action that we can’t really control to help us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Sounds good, but other studies have shown that breathing more oxygen does not make us yawn less. _____18_____. Hmmm. Now what?
_____19_____. Stretching (拉伸) and yawning may be a way to relax muscles and joints, increase heart rate, and feel more awake.
Other people believe that yawning is a protective way to redistribute (重新分配) the oil-like substance called surfactant that helps keep lungs from drying up.So, if we didn’t yawn, according to this theory, taking a deep breath would become harder and harder – and that would not be good!
But there is one idea about yawning that everyone knows to be true:_____20_____. If you yawn in class, you’ll probably notice a few other people will start yawning, too. Even thinking about yawning can get you yawning. How many times have you yawned while reading this article? We hope not many!
A.It seems to spread
B.Yawning seems to be common
C.No one knows for sure, but there are many theories
D.Another theory is that yawning stretches the lung and lung tissue
E.This theory indicates yawning, like a deep breath, helps us feel fresh
F.Likewise, breathing more carbon dioxide does not increase yawning
G.As this theory goes, our bodies take in less oxygen because our breathing has slowed

Patience is of great importance in our daily life. Once I waited a bus to come at a stop. 30 minutes past, but no bus came. Both upset and annoyed, I decided to walk on feet. But no sooner had I left when the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited for one more minute, I would have caught it. If I chose to take a next bus, I would have to wait for other 30 minutes. Only then do I realize my problem. Being impatient will possible waste all the effort that we have put it in. Now whenever I am close to lose my patience, I’ll think of this experience.
