The 31st Summer Olympics will be held in Brazil in 2016. Before this global sporting event, we started thinking about sports that didn’t exist any more and sports that were maybe a little strange. Read the following ones that have ever been included in the past Olympic Games.
●Live Pigeon Shooting (1900)
This bloody event was only held once, at the 1900 Paris Games. Nearly 300 birds were killed during the competition, leaving a crime scene of feathers and blood. This is the only event in Olympic history that involved killing live animals.
●Kabaddi (1936)
This sport is popular in South Asia. The object is for one member of a team to enter the other side’s half of the field, and score points. The attacker then returns to his half of the field.
●12 Hour Bicycle Race (1896)
Seven riders got on their bikes at 5 a.m. and rode until 5 p.m. Four riders dropped out before noon, but the winner, Adolf Schmal of Austria, managed about 180 miles. Only Schmal and one other finished.
●Tug of War (1900—1920)
This may seem like a basic PE class sport more than an Olympic event, but Tug of War was actually one of the first sports played at the Olympic games in 500 BC.
There are two teams of eight; the winning team must pull the other team six feet forward.
●Swimming Obstacle Race (1900)
The athletes had to climb over a pole (杆子) and a row of boats, and then swim under another row of boats. All of this was done in the Seine River, so they also had to fight against the water. This event was only ever held in 1900, in Paris.
( )4. What do you probably think of these events?
A. Strange.
B. Fantastic.
C. Modern.
D. Interesting.
( )5. What does “drop out” mean in English according to the passage?
A. Give up.
B. Run out.
C. Fall off.
D. Break down.
( )6. What can we learn from the passage?

B. Tug of War was held in the Olympics only once.
C. Some of the events may be in the 31st Summer Olympics.
D. These events are not as popular as they used to be.

In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter
how hard people fight back.
Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time,
scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on
going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks
like a spider with four legs.
Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.
To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then figure o ut the machine’s shape at any moment. The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.
“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”
( )7.Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?
A. They cannot repair themselves.
B. The computer has changed a lot.
C. They have no computers inside.
D. The computer cannot work if the robot changes. ( )8.The new technology allows the robot to _________.
A. do house work for humans
B. keep working after being damaged
C. remember a lot of information
D. tell people where it is
( )9.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. sensors
B. robots
C. arms and legs
D. scientists
( )10.How do the sensors in the robot work?
A. They can replace the computer when it’s broken.
B. They can find out where the damage comes from.
C. They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.
D. They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.
D
No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting.
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(关节) hurt is a sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.
()11. Which of the following can be used here to replace(取代) the underlined phrase “on the way”?
A. away
B. gone
C. disappearing
D. coming
()12. When you see the stars twinkle clearly at night, the weather will be_________.
A. warm
B. rainy
C. clear and fine

A. A rainbow appears in the morning.
B. Some birds fly high.
C. The stars twinkle clearly at night.
D. Fogs appear in the morning just above a river. ()14. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Nobody can control the weather.
B. If the sunset is red in colour, then the next day will be fine.
C. If many people feel their joints hurt, it may be a sign of wet weather.
D. People only use their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

Body language sometimes speaks louder than words. Body language can tell you whether someone is interested or not, and whether someone is happy to see you or not. One of the most important things that body language can tell, however, is whether a person is lying or not. Here’s how you can determine whether someone is telling you the truth or not, based on body language alone.
The eyes are said to be the windows of the soul and one of the things that the little windows will show you is whether someone is honest or not. When talking to people, look at their eyes and judge whether they are turning away from your close watch or not. People are usually subconsciously(潜意识地) uncomfortable when lying to the person that they are talking to. Besides lying, eyes that have a lot of movement usually show that the person is about to lie or that the person has told a lie.
People who lie often touch their noses and other parts of their faces. If you notice that your partner or someone talking to you unconsciously touches his nose, this probably means that
he is lying. The reason why people touch their faces when they lie is that lying usually causes an increase in blood circulation, leading to an itch in the small blood vessels(血管) in the nose or in the cheeks.
Another common body language suggestion that someone is lying is when a person crosses his arms. Crossing the arms means that the person is both being defensive(防御的)and shutting himself off. People who are speaking the truth will usually make an open gesture(姿态)with the arms on the side to show that they are not hiding anything. Subconsciously, however, people will cross their arms when they are lying.
If you plan to use body language to determine whether someone is lying or not, make sure that you are focused and that you are looking in the face and the person’s body all at the
same time.

Whenever we meet with difficulty or failure, teachers, parents or others often say to us or perhaps we say to ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination(决心). A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt(尝试) at something new, so we should not feel disappointed (失望)and should try again. Besides(此外,而且), if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow.
Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we can not make the same ones. If we do not try again, the lesson (教训)that we have learned is wasted.
Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence,
and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge (挑战)ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better and more confident. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of achieving our goals any more , but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.
