(2017·模拟)One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem —inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the“Children’s Room.”The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. But one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的)to my dog. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
Years later, my mother was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
1. Why did the author’s mother order him to borrow a book?
A. Because she wanted to cure his problem.
B. Because the author was a lazy student.
C. Because the public library was near.
D. Because borrowing books was cheaper.
2. What can we learn about the author’s dog?
A. It was one of his favorite pets.
B. It was secretly stolen from him.
C. It was adopted by someone else.
D. Its name was Amos.
3. What was the function of the book the author borrowed from the library?
A. It reminded him of his childhood.
B. It opened a door to his reading.
C. It proved his mother was wrong.
D. It improved his imagination.
4. Which one could be the best title of the passage?
A. Mum’s Strict Order
B. The Charm of a Book
C. Reunion with My Beagle
D. My Passion for Reading
答案1-4 ACBB

(2017·模拟)Having a hobby can greatly enrich a teenager’s life. However, many teens are unwilling to try a hobby. Here are some tips on how to help your teen explore his or her interests.
__1__ A hobby is a lifelong interest that a person takes up for pleasure. No one can “assign(指派)” a person a hobby, as it’s a deeply personal thing. You can encourage a hobby, but it’s absolutely up to the teen.
Look for opportunities you think he or she might like. A good time for this is the beginning of a new school year or the summer holidays. __2__ At schools, there’s usually a system where teens are exposed to and encouraged to try out various interests.
Bring up ideas for interests, gently. Parents are the first people to spot opportunities for fun activities. __3__Mention possible enjoyable activities, but three times is generally enough. If your child does not want to do a hobby, respect it.
Be supportive of hobbies. It would be terrible to convince him or her to do something and then be too busy to help him or her enjoy it. Always be proud of what your teen accomplishes. If you know a lot about the hobby, offer some advice if asked. __4__
Do not force your teen. If you attempt to force your teen to try something, it’s unlikely to end well. __5__ Then stress that you’d really like him/her to continue, but the decision is not yours to make.
A. But avoid “taking over” a project.
B. Encouragement plays an important role.
C. But teenagers dislike being pushed into things.
D. He or she might be too stressed to accomplish it.
E. Hobbies are not something one is required to do.
F. If you are desperate, have your teen try something for just a week.
G. These are all times that various organizations and clubs are starting up.
