(2016·甘肃省高三第一次诊断)I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas Day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy. I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice's face.

(2016·统一考试)Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol and electricity. They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery (电池) electric motor to provide electric power.
There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic lights, keeping only the electric engine running.
Conventional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating. Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less petrol. Another way that fuel consumption is cut is by a system of “regenerative (再生的) braking”. The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.
In 1928, Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first massproduced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999. As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There
are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don't have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.

(2016·东北三校二模)The stories we share with one another are important. They show wisdom and provide inspiration. They are important to our development. But sometimes people choose not to tell.
Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola.
There is a danger in holding back stories that ought to be told. Bobette Buster said it like this, “The fact is, history has shown us that stories not told can become like a dangerous genie (妖怪) left in a bottle. When they are finally uncorked,_their power to destroy is set free.”
There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: They often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share; and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret — especially those that embarrass someone else.
Most of us have two selves: The one we display on the outside and the one we actually are on the inside. And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.
Honesty and openness is important: It proves we are trustworthy. It displays we are human. We are not perfect or better. It highlights the importance of hard work and personal development. Hard work may not allow us to overcome our disadvantages completely. But with hard work, we do not have to be restricted to our mistakes.
Does this mean we admit every weakness, every disadvantage, and every secret regret to everybody we meet? No, of course not. There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in an appropriate manner.

(2016·绵阳市第三次诊断)Failure is inevitable if we are to succeed in life. Unfortunately, many people do not know how to overcome failure, and they are stopped by it when they encounter one.
Rise up and don't regret
When we fail, we might be tempted to think that we have wasted our time and thus regret it. But that should not be the case. The fact that you have done something is much better than doing nothing. Rise up and move on.__1__
Understand that failure is there to bring you wisdom
Failure is there not without a reason. __2__ Each failure you encounter increases your wisdom and brings you one step closer to success. If you have this, you will see failure differently. You will see each failure as an opportunity to learn.
__3__ While failure brings you wisdom, how much wisdom you will get depends entirely on your ability to harvest it. So don't waste the opportunity to learn. If you fail to do this, you may waste a lot of time by repeating the same mistakes in the future.
Don't give up; maybe you are only one step away from success
The thought of giving up is temptation, especially when we have failed over and over again. But who knows that maybe you are only one step away from success? Will you abandon the long journey you have passed when you are already so close to your destination? __4__ Maintain your enthusiasm
__5__ Otherwise your later effort will have less and less power.
Many people who achieve great undertakings have no special quality. They are just ordinary people with extraordinary attitude. Let's be one of them.
A.You should keep on trying and do it with the same enthusiasm as when you first began.
B.So hold on tight and don't give up.
C.It's there to give you the wisdom you need to succeed.
D.Don't be afraid of the space between your dreams and reality.
