孙中山先生一生十分重视植树造林。

1893年，他《上李鸿章书》的政治文献就提出中国欲强，必须急兴农学，讲究树艺。

1924年他在广州演讲《三民主义》时反复强调：我们研究到防止水灾和旱灾的根本方法都是要造林植树，要造全国大规模的森林。

1925年，3月12日，孙中山先生逝世，1928年，为纪念孙中山逝世三周年，举行植树式。

以后将3月12日定为植树节。

1979年2月23日，第三届全国人大常委会第六次会议以法律的形式确定我国的3月12日为植树节。

每年3月12日作为植树节还有纪念孙中山先生的意义。

我们缅怀伟大的民主革命先驱者孙中山先生，我们同样深深怀念伟大的无产阶级革命家邓小平同志。

他是全民义务植树运动的倡导者和带头人。

1981年，我国一些地方遭受特大洪灾，邓小平同志专门对林业问题作了重要讲话。

他指出：最近的洪灾涉及到林业、涉及到森林的过量采伐；看来宁可进口一点，也要少砍一点。

小平同志还说，中国的林业要上去，不采取一些有力措施不行。

他提议，是否可以规定每人每年都要种几棵树，比如三棵或五棵树，要包栽包活，多者受奖，无故不履行此项义务者受罚。

在实施国务院《关于开展全民义务植树运动决议》的头一年，小平同志对工作人员说：植树节快到了，我们家每人至少要栽三棵树，要包栽包活。

植树节那天，他带领全家人到京西玉泉山种下一株株松柏。

之后，不仅在北京，全国各地都先后留下邓小平同志植树的身影。

每年植树节，他身体力行，坚持了11个春秋，一直到他85岁高龄，古今中外很少有这样的人。

1992年邓小平同志来深圳视察时，曾在深圳仙湖植物园植下一棵榕树。

邓小平同志曾指出：植树造林，绿化祖国，是建设社会主义，造福子孙后代的伟大事业，要坚持20年，坚持100年，坚持1000年，要一代一代永远传下去。
