For people who are addicted t oshoppong, the post-Chritmas period means only one thing----sales! Across the country, prices are greatly reduced on clohing, electronics, home furnishings and more. London is the place for serious shopping, and you can certainly pick up some amazing bargins.
The sales start on Boxing Day----26th December, and continue for the month of January, but the keenest bargin hunters get there early to be first through the doors. In Oxford Street queues formed outside shops ahead of early morning openings for the start of their sales. At Brent Cross, in north London, more than 1,000 people were queuing at 3:30 a.m. For the 'Next' clothing store's sale ehich began at 4 a.m.. Those who were strong enough to bear difficult situations even camped outside the shops to be first in line.
Consumers who went to shops in large numbers ,with the aim of buying a lot of bargins were rewarded with discounts of as muc as 80% as department stores joined the sales. The shops were extremely crowded when the sales got into full swing, with more than half a million people shopping in London's West End.
The biggest, most famous shops such as Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty and John Lewis all have sales. In the department stores you're likely to find everything you need in the same building! It's a good time to buy a lot of cheap gadgets, and there's no better time to invest in some designer clothes.
Some people take their partners shopping with them, and buy their Christmas presents in the sale----a pratical but unromantic way of making sure you get the gift you really want. For a less exciting but less stressful shopping exerience, online retailers(零售商) are also here, participating January sales!

A new high speed rail link between London and Paris has brought the two capitals closer together, cutting 20 minutes off the time to Brussels.
The French open their stretch(一段路程) of the high speed line back in 1993, a year before the tunnel under the English Channel itself opened. The high speed line to Brussels was finished in 1997; and now, ten years after that, Britain has finnally got its 12 billion dollar line High Speed One.
At 11:01 the first Eurostar, named 'Tread Lightly' makes sure people understand that a train causes less harm to the environment than some other means of transportation, leaving the station smoothly heading for Paris. Just minutes later, the first fast train arrived from Brussels and passengers came out of the train in largr numbers onto the platform to give their first impression of the journey: One Of Passengers: Great, yeah, very fast and ... It's unbelievable. Great, you are right----it was a wonderful journey.
Much of the excitement here has focused not on the fast links to Europe but on the lovingly redecorated Vitorian train-shed ---- a unique and remarkble building that was built when trains were still powered by steam engines----now featuring (以…为特色) what claims to be the longest champagne bar in Europe, and it sits under what was when built the largest single span(跨度) roof in the world.
Most of Britain's mainline trains move at speeds far less than the 186 miles per hour of the Eurostar. Rail enthusiasts are already asking, if this High Speed One, when will there be a High Speed Two? The answer us still, no time soon.

When you're a graduate, people expect you to use a register which is wider than a school-leaver's. Have some tips on how to expand your vocabulary:
Buy a large dictionary rather than one which id 'compact(简明)' or 'concise'. You need one which is big enough to define words clearly and helpfully (aroud 1,500 pages is a goog size).
Avoid dictionary which send you round in circles by just giving synonyms(同义词). A pocket dictionary might suggest:'impetuous = rash'.
A more comprehensive dictionary will tell you that imprtuous means 'rushing with force and violence', while another gives 'liable to act without consideration', and add to your understanding by giving the derivation '14th century, from late Latin imprtuous = violent'.
It will tell you that rash means 'acting without consideration or thought', and comes from Old High German rasc = hurried. So underlying these two similiar words is the difference between violence and hurrying. There are over 600,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary; most of them have different meanings(only a small proportion are synonyms).
Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by using very complicated language to define the term you are looking up, leaving you struggling to understanding half a dozen new words.
Keep your dictionary at hand when you're standing. Look up unfamiliar words and words to understand what they mean.
Improve your vocabulary by reading widely.
If you haven't got your dictionary with you, note down words which yo don't understand and look them up later.

The reading skills of young male students may improve more when boys are tutored (辅导) by women, a Canadian study shows, contracting some school policies of hiring male teachers to improve boys' literacy(读写能力).
Herb Katz, an education professor at the University of Alberta, took 175 boys in the third and fourth grades, identifying as struggling readers, and paired them with a research assistant who worked on their reading skills for 30 minutes a week over 10 weeks.
On average, the boys paired with female tutors felt better about their reading skills after the 10 weeks than those who were coached by a male research assistant, the study found.
Katz said the study, published in the US journal Sex Roles, may cause educational policy-makers in countries such as Ausrtalia and Britain to rethink policies that call for more male teachers to be hired to provide role models for boys whose reading skills lag behind those of their peers (同龄人).'It tells us hat the way government respond with policy is maybe a little too quick and a little too simple,' Katz said. Boys and girls enter kindergarden with similiar reading slills, Katz said, but by the end of the third grade, boys gave lower reading scores than girls. The reasons behind that difference are not entirely clear. 'I don't know that reading skills fade so much as teachers may not recognise what boys are doing,' he said. 'We don'e really know a lot about boys, even in the early years.'
The boys involved in the study attend 12 schools in the pairie city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Most were from downtown neighbourhoods. About a third were aboriginal Canadians and 55 percent came from ethnic minority groups.
68. What's the purpose of this passenger?
A. To encourage boys to do more reading.

One possible version
Everyone in the world wants to succeed. As a matter of fact, opportunity comes every once in a while. On most occasions, it appears without being noticed. Only when the opportunity has left us, do we realise that we have lost it.
Some people know the importance of oportunity. They understand opportunity is a factor in achieving success. So they are always ready for an opportunity when it arrives.
However , other people give up their efforts to seek opportunities and grasp them. They are used to waiting for opportunity to come knocking on their doors. Most people are given opportunities, but only the more intellgent and hard-working people seize it.。
