In many societies, there is often greater acceptance of light skin than dark skin.Light skin may be seen as a mark of beauty, intelligence and success. These beliefs can lead to social pressures even within the same group,if some members are darker than others.
The result is that skin lightening has become very common across Africa,Asia and other areas of the world and more people with dark skin are using skin-lightening products, even if it means they may face health risks. They believe that having whiter skin will improve the quality of their lives. Many people think they will have a better chance of getting a job or marrying into a better family.Or they want to look like what their society generally considers beautiful.
Some beauty care products and soaps contain chemicals that make skin lighter,However, some of the chemicals are extremely dangerous. The chemicals in the products block and break down the natural barrier to protect against sunlight. Then the skin can become thick and ually the person will use
more of the product in an effort to correct the problem, which just makes things even worse.Doctor Ly says some chemicals are so dangerous that they may lead to blackened fingernails, infections and serious skin damage.
And these are not the only problems.Experts say some people who change their skin color suffer emotional damage. They feel regretful and sad. They feel that instead of risking their health, they should have learned to live and accept their skin color as it was.
24.What’s the result of the wrong understanding of darker skin?
A.Many people with dark skin try to make their skin whiter.
B.Many people with whiter skin live a better life than others.
C.People with darker skin try to marry people with light skin.
D.People with darker skin try to protect themselves against social pressures.
25.The third paragraph is about_________.

B.the mental damage that skin-lightening products have caused
C.the physical damage that skin-lightening products have caused
D.the causes why skin-lightening products can make skin whiter
26.Why are chemicals in beauty care products dangerous?
A.They can damage the skin’s color producing progress.
B.They can control people’s emotions and feelings.
C.They can make the fingernails and skin black.
D.They make more people decide to change their skin colors.
27.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Difficult Colors of Skin
B.The Dark Side of Skin lightening
C.What Is Beauty?
D.Light Skin or Dark Skin?

Ask people in the UK what the words“Sunday roast”mean to them, and they’ll probably take you back to their grandmothers’dining rooms-maybe with a few stories of“the greatest puddings”and“the best ever steak”.But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the Daily Mail, just one in50British families sits down to this weekly meal together.
There are many reasons why the roast is becoming less popular. In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook.Nowadays, people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven(烤箱) up.
However,a recent article from The Telegraph warned against being carried away by our tight schedules:“It would be a shame to let this fine old tradition disappear.”
The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it.The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share
good food and chat with family and friends.“For busy moms and dads, even if you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and the TV only once a week and turn the Sunday roast into a real family event, children can have fun cooking the food and clearing up together.”
28.The best title for the passage is probably_____.
A.Sunday—Best Time for Family
B.Sunday Roast Dying Out
C.It’s the Perfect Time for Us
D.Let’s Sit Down Together
29.Why do people pay less attention to Sunday roast?
A.They have a busy lifestyle.
B.They have no interest in cooking.
C.They don’t think it worthwhile.
D.They are living in the modern society.
30.What does the underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refer to?
A.A recent article.
B.A traditional kitchen.
C.The fine old tradition.
D.Sunday morning activity.
31.How does the author feel towards Sunday roast’s dying out?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Sorry
D.Uncertain.

Can small, organic agriculture really feed the world?Won’t we need science to produce enough food as the world population is growing to9billion by2050?The answer to both questions is YES—but that science may look different than you think.
We’ve been told that the only way we’ll be able to feed the growing population is through the science of GM crops and chemicals. But the latest scientific studies are saying just the opposite. In study after study, the message about agriculture is:To feed the world,we need to support sustainable(可持续的)agriculture on different local family farms that work with nature.
In2008,an international study found that sustainable agriculture, not GM crops, shows more hope of ending hunger. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge,Science, and Technology for Development(known as the IAASTD),calls for a change of the world’s food and farming systems.
The IAASTD reports that industrial agriculture has greatly destroyed the world’s soils and other natural resources, and now is causing water pollution, energy crisis, and air pollution. The report warns that expensive,short-term ways—including GM crops—are not likely to cut down long-term hunger, and could even make environment and social problems worse in many places.
A recent report by the UN Environment Program shows that food problems are becoming more serious and strongly supports sustainable agriculture on small family farms. It also shows that a worldwide change to organics can actually increase the world’s food production by as much as50%—enough to feed a population of9billion people with the land we have now.GM crops, once popular, are now being questioned worldwide.
32.What is the best way to feed the growing population of the world?
A.In expensive,short-term ways.
B.By encouraging industrial agriculture.
C.By developing small,organic agriculture.
D.Through the science of GM crops and chemicals.
33.Which of the following can best interpret sustainable agriculture?
A.The science of GM crops.
B.Working on small family farms.
C.A fast way to increase the world’s food production.
D.An approach to agriculture without harming the environment.
34.What is suggested in the last paragraph?
A.There will be less food problems if we use big family farms.
B.There will be less food problems if the world supports GM food.
C.There will be less food problems if we increase a lot of farm land.
D.There will be less food problems if the world supports sustainable agriculture.
35.What might be talked about if there is one more paragraph?
A.The causes of food problems.
B.The disadvantages of GM crops.
C.The development of industrial agriculture.
D.The disadvantages of sustainable agriculture.

Carefully listen to what others say.Rushing with your rambling(漫谈)is always not a good idea. 39When they find you reliable and easy to talk to,you will also find them interesting.Don’t look for any topics beforehand.Let the conversation lead you.You will see one topic leads to another.
