I dropped out of college after my first year. Three years later, I returned to college after having been stuck in a dead-end job, working at a department store. I saw school as my way out. But I quickly found myself up against the same problems that had caused me to give up before. I was in over my head with college-level algebra (代数) and a heavy workload of reading and writing homework. In addition, I was still unsure of my career (职业) direction。

After about a week in community college, I was feeling the same upset and fear I’d felt a few years earlier. I was ready to drop out again. Then a smartly dressed woman with grey hair walked confidently to the front of my English composition class. “Look at you! You’re here because you want to change your lives for the better. And you’re going to make it!”
Mrs. Peters didn’t know me from any of the other 40 faces in her classroom, yet I felt she was speaking directly to me. She knew exactly what I was feeling and what many of my classmates were probably feeling as well,
and she lessened our fears. I came out of that class making up my mind to succeed.
Having trouble keeping up with the workload? Break it down into small manageable pieces, and set up a schedule that works for you, she told us. Professors teaching too fast for you to take notes? Interrupt (打断) them with a question so you can catch up on your notes before they continue, she advised. If college algebra is too difficult, drop back to introductory college math, she suggested. As for English composition which can be hard and boring, she gave us interesting writing homework.
She never let us lose sight of our dreams. “Go for the best: you’re worth it” she said when we graduated.
I left that community college with high grades and went on to do further studies. Mrs. Peters wouldn’t know that when she gave that talk, she made a huge difference in my life.
4. Why did the author go back to college?
A. He was out of a job.
B. He was dissatisfied with his job.
C. He tried to start his own business.
D. He hoped to learn more about algebra.
5. What troubled the author at college?
A. He did badly in recent exams.
B. He was forced to leave school.
C. He failed to manage his studies.
D. He was beaten by bitter memories.
6. How did Mrs. Peters affect the author?
A. By showing favor to him.
B. By talking with him directly.
C. By setting him extra homework.
D. By givinghim inspiration and skills.
7. What advice did Mrs. Peters offer to her students on their careers?
A. Have fun.
B. Start small.
C. Dream big
D. Think twice
C
We asked four people who watched an online talk on technology and communication by Sherry Turkle for their opinions.
Fred:
The talk certainly gave me plenty of food for thought about how technology is changing our behaviour. People are constantly multitasking, whether it be emailing during meetings or texting in the checkout queue. It’s as if we can’t bear to miss out on what our online friends are up to, so we juggle the real and online world. My greatest concern is that we don’t give our brains a chance to switch off. It’sthese precious momentswhen we actually process information that helps us make important decisions.
Jeremy:
It was a fascinating talk and the speaker really hit the nail on the head with a couple of things. Take parental influence, for instance. How can we expect teenagers not to text while doing their homework when they witness their parents posting on social media while cooking the evening meal or waiting at a red light?
Kath:
So much of what the speaker said rang true. I honestly believe there’s a danger that the more connected we are, the more isolated we feel. I don’t think this is such an issue for my generation who’ve lived without technology for so long. We know how to be alone. But the under 20s are another kettle of fish. They’re so busy communicating that they never experience the feeling of solitude and run the risk of not learning how to enjoy their own company.
Carl:
I’m not sure to what extent I agree that people are more alone, but the way we communicate has certainly evolved. The speaker makes a good point about how we’re getting used to talking with machines like Siri or robots, which are totally lack of experience of human life. But despite such limitations, we seem to be expecting more from technology and less from each other.
8. What does the underlined phrase “these precious moments” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. When our brains are free.
B. When we emailing during meeting.
C. When we texting in the checkout queue.
D. When we juggle the real and online world.
9. What suggestion may Jeremy give to the parents?
A. Accompany their children when they are doing homework.
B. Prevent their children using phone while doing homework.
C. Set a good example for their children on using phone properly.
D. Stop posting on social media in face of their children.
10. What does Kath worry about the under 20s generation?
A. They communicate more with others.
B. They use more technology.
C. It’s difficult for them to find companies.
D. They don’t know how to be alone.
11. What is Carl’s attitude towards the use of technology in communication?
A. Favorable.
B. Intolerant.
C. Doubtful.
D. Indifferent.

Zaki was small for his twelve years, and he was angry being treated as a child. Farid, his older brother, had
been looked upon as a man long before he was Zaki’s age. Every day Farid and the other young Bahraini men went out in their wooden boats to dive for oysters (牡蛎). Many times Zaki begged to go along, but Faridalways refused to let him.
So every day Zaki would go to the shallow water to practice. His grandfather, a former diver, would watch him and advise him. All morning, Zaki would practice diving beneath the waves. Every afternoon, again and again he would go underwater and hold his breath. With each day’s practice, his diving improved and he could hold his breath a little while longer. Soon Zaki felt as much at home in the water as he did out of it.
Zaki rose early one day. He wanted to compete with his brother. They dived beneath the waves. Zaki opened his eyes and found himself looking into his brother’s face. Farid was smiling with confidence. Slowly, the smile was disappearing from Farid’s face. As more seconds passed, a worried look appeared on Farid’s face. Farid was realizing that Zaki could possibly beat him. Looking into Farid’s eyes, Zaki suddenly understood what losing could mean to his brother. Never would the villagers allow him to live it down. He would be laughed at by losing to a little child. Almost without thinking, Zaki kicked his feet and rose to the surface of the water a second before Farid’s head appeared beside him.
The men around them cheered and patted Farid on the back. Farid, however, put his arm around Zaki’s shoulders. “Today,” Farid announced, “we shall have a new diver among us.” Then quietly, for Zaki’s ears alone, he said “Thank you, my brother.” And Zaki knew that they both had learned that it takes more than strength to make
a man.
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Zaki’s grandfather was a good diver.
B. Zaki liked staying at home every day.
C. Zaki practised hard in the water daily.
D. Zaki’s grandfather encouraged him to dive.
13. Which of the following best describes Zaki according to paragraph 3?
A. Considerate.
B. Ambitious.
C. Confident.
D. Adventurous.
14. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?
A. Farid beat his little brother easily.
B. Zaki was as strong as his brother.
C. Zaki regretted losing the competition.
D. Both Farid and Zaki had grown up.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Farid’s Pride
B. Zaki’s Challenge
C. Brothers’ Competition
D. Grandfather’s Advice

People Who Can’t Count
A recent study has discovered that dyscalculia, the mathematical inability in reading, affects about 5% of children in Britain. There is no simple way of finding out the reason and kids with this learning disability are usually labelled unintelligent.
So what exactly is this learning disability in mathematics? Unlike most people, dyscalculics cannot recognise three or four objects.____16____For example, they need to count the books on the table before they can say how many there are. In other words, they have to count them one by one. This is where they are different from others. The majority of us, if shown three or four similar things, can immediately recognise them.
___17___They cannot understand, for instance, why two and three makes five. Another problem is not being able to tell which group contains more objects than the other. Experiments have proved that dyscalculics have not developed the part of the brain responsible for processing numbers.
There are also problems with the abstract concept of time for dyscalculics.____18____If your best friend is always late, he might be suffering from dyscalculia. Dyscalculics cannot keep track of time, and they never know how much time they have spent getting ready and how long it will take them to get to work. In addition, research has shown that dyscalculics behave oddly in social situations.____19____This poor ability can explain why they never know how much change they are due or what kind of budget they need for their holiday.
On the other hand, dyscalculics are very good at creative arts. People suffering from dyscalculia can become painters or poets. Dyscalculia does not seem to delay language acquisition. Dyscalculic children acquire language at the same time as, if not earlier than, most children and have no problem learning to read or write.___20___
A. Dyscalculics have difficulties in using numbers at all.
B. This disability scares children away from learning mathematics.
C. They have to go through the routine of counting even a small number of objects.
D. It is quite reasonable for dyscalculics to solve this kind of specific problem at any time.
E. They never know how much they should tip the waiter or they’ve got left after a shopping trip.
F. We can see that dyscalculia is only a learning disability, not a general indication of intelligence.
G. This can account for their difficulty in reading schedules and remembering the order in which things have happened.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods,
where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
"Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.
"Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.
"…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.
"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
"Steve! Please! I care about you!"
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM?!
Paragraph 1
Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon.
