Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning the Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system--- a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value---that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing syste m shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome it.
24.Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important, because ______. A.Chinese engines are very welcome
B.China has the world’s largest population
C.there are more and more rich people in China

A.the difficulties of learning Chinese
B.the advantages of learning Chinese
C.the Chinese tone system
D.the Chinese writing system
27.What would be probably written following this text?
A.The sources of Chinese characters.
B.The importance of learning Chinese.
C.The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D.The difficulties of learning other languages.

Stages of Hurricane: Simple Storms Grow Into Giants
A storm progresses through four different stages before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance (热带扰动), which has thunderstorms and rotating (旋转) winds. Next is a tropical depression (热带低气压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40and 73 miles per hour. Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface ocean water.
As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm.
What’s Your Name, Hurricane? Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them. Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean.
Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men. Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters.
For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex (male), Bonnie (female), Colin (male), Danielle (female), Earl (male) and so on…
There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one.
28.Which of the following is the right order of stages of a hurricane?
A.Tropical depression, tropical disturbance, tropical storm, hurricane
B.Tropical disturbance, tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane
C.Tropical storm, tropical depression, tropical disturbance, hurricane
D.Tropical storm, tropical disturbance, tropical depression, hurricane
29.What happens when a hurricane crosses over land?
A.It breaks apart and forms tornadoes. B.It returns to the ocean afterwards. C.It moves more quickly. D.It becomes less powerful.
30.The underlined word “alternate” in paragraph 4 means “____”.
A.take turns between B.carry on
C.come from D.cause trouble to
31.What do we know about the hurricanes?
A.Six common hurricane names are often used.
B.An old name will be replaced every year.
C.Most of them are deadly and costly.
D.They didn’t have official names until 1953.

The unusual whistle language used as a means of communication by villagers in the remote and mountainous northern Turkey has been added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The language is a highly developed high-pitch system of whistling to communicate in rugged(崎岖的)areas where people mostly cannot see each other. It can allow people to communicate across great distances, up to 5 kilometers. Compared with other similar whistle languages in Spain’s Canary Islands, in Mexico, or in Greek villages, it has a higher tone and larger vocabulary.
This unusual form of communication, which dates some 500 years ago, to the
Ottoman Empire, was born from sheer necessity and widespread across the Black Sea regions.
But 50 years ago, it suffered the impact of the progression of technology and nowadays the rapid growth of cellular mobile systems has put this cultural heritage under serious threat.
For centuries, the language has been passed on from grandparent to parent, from parent to child. Now, though, many of its most skilful speakers who use their tongue, teeth and fingers are aging all becoming physically weak. Young people are no longer interested in learning the language or in finding ways to update its vocabulary with new words, and in a few generations it may be gone for good.
“Our bird language is very convenient and efficient to communicate across the valleys. It has many benefits over yelling, which is bad for our throats.” said Avni Kocek, head of the bird village adding that despite setbacks because of technology, “Bird language is still used by many of us. Whistle language is transmitted from our elders to us and we have the duty to transmit it to our children. We are making efforts to keep our culture alive through the annual Bird Language Festival.”
Besides, the bird language has been required to be taught at primary schools since 2014 by district authorities in order to instil(逐步实施)the practice in younger generations.
32.What is the bird language’s advantage over other similar whistle languages? A.It is used as a means of communication.
B.It is older and has a larger number of users.
C.It can send more messages to farther places.
D.It is a completely different system of whistling.
33.What’s the biggest threat to the bird language?
A.Other whistle languages are more effectively protected.
B.The need to use it in everyday life is disappearing.
C.Many of its most skilful speakers are growing old.
D.Young people find it too difficult to learn well enough.
34.What’s the most effective measure so far taken to protect the bird language? A.It has become a subject at primary schools.
B.Bird Language Festival is celebrated every month.
C.Cellular mobile systems are not allowed in the area.
D.All parents are required to transmit it to their children.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Preserving the Endangered Bird language
B.The Story of a Bird Language Speaker
C.Celebrating the Bird Language Festival
D.The Disappearance of Bird Language

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in t he coming years.
If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learnin g Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome it.
