II.阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D中,选出最佳答案,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A
Many people lived in the United States before the settlers came from Europe. These ancient peoples had different cultures and parts of them were difficult to understand. One feature of these cultures was their close relationship to the land. The people used the land for many things. One thing people did with the land was to create mounds(土丘), which look like small hills. Scientists have found mounds built by many different groups of native people. They called the people who built these mounds “Mound Builders”.
Three cultures seem to have built most of the mounds found in the United States. These cultures are the Adena, the Hopewell and the Mississippian. Of the three, the Adena culture is the oldest. It was developed mainly in Ohio. The Hopewell culture rose as the Adena culture was dying. The Hopewell moved as far south as Florida. This culture seemed more informal and lasted about 700 years. The most recent culture is the Mississippian.
Mounds can be found in many parts of the country —from New York to Florida. They are found as far west as Nebraska. No one knows for sure just why the mounds were built.
There appear to be three main types of mounds. They are the temple mounds, the burial mounds, and the effigy(雕像) mounds. The temple mounds are the oldest mounds. People may have built temples or places of worship(拜神的地方) on top of the mounds. People would climb up to reach the temple for worship. Some mounds had the homes of leaders built on top of them. Other mounds were burial mounds. The burial mounds were most likely built to honor the dead. Scientists have found bones and jewelry in some of these mounds. Effigy mounds are mounds shaped like animals, such as snakes or birds.
Each mound took many years to build. Many people worked together. They would collect baskets of dirt. Then they would go to the place where the mound was to be built and then return to get more dirt. This would go on day after day until a shape formed. Mound building probably went on for about 5,500 years in North America.

Pi, the lead character in Oscar-winning Ang Lee's new movie Life of Pi, went through an inspiring journey of growth and self-discovery. So did 19-year-old Suraj Sharma, the Indian actor who plays him.
But it was a lucky chance for the new star to get this role. Sharma was a regular student who lived with his mathematician parents in Delhi, India. As the director travelled to Mumbai to find his Pi, the teenager went along with his younger brother, who had acted in a couple of movies, to audition(试镜). But little did Sharma know that he would end up winning the role from 3,000 hopefuls.
Lee said he saw Pi in Sharma: “Not only does he have a compelling and wise look. He has this rare talent.” The director said that in the final round, Sharma gave one of the “most compelling readings we had. In the end, he was in tears.” Understandably, Sharma didn't want to let Lee down. “He [Lee] had given me this opportunity. I had to give it my best,” Sharma told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Sharma swam for four or five hours a day until he was completely comfortable with the water. He also worked on his body because he had to first put on weight and then quickly lose weight as the story developed. He even had rats run all over him to prepare for his role. Lee was impressed by the teenager, especially his endurance and patience in staying in a water tank for many hours each day. Sharma was only 16 when Lee signed him. After three years of shooting, Sharma said he had matured with Pi’s journey.

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them, Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech –“ I have a dream”, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴)his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that express the speaker’s ideas c learly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speakers’ attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being imperfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
36. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ___________.
A. be smarter than you
B. notice your mistakes
C. do better than you
D. know what you are talking about
37. You don’t reme mber obvious mistakes in a speech because ___________.
A. your attention is on the content
B. you don’t fully understand the speech
C. you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
D. you find the way of speech-making more important
38. It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.
A. giving a speech is like giving a performance
B. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
39. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B. How to Make a Perfect Speech
C. Don’t Expect a Perfect Speech
D. Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech
40. Which of the following statements is true?
A. If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech.
B. Speech-making is a kind of performance.
C. Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message.
D. Martin Luther King is not a good speaker.

When I was a boy I always wanted to be a cowboy. I remember my Mom worrying about me getting sick from the heat in the summer, because I wore a thick blue sweater all the time. No respectable cowboy, however, would wear short sleeves so I sweated while I played.
One day my parents gave me a bb gun. It looked just like a gun that all the cowboys used in the movies. I spent hours each day during those summer months shooting at stumps and pretending to be John Wayne (film actor who played tough heroes). As I was coming into the house one afternoon, though, I tried it one time too many. The gun that I thought was empty let out a soft pop and a bullet flew across the room and parted the hair of my Dad who was asleep on the couch. My Dad took one look at the bb hole a half inch above his head, walked over to me, took my gun, walked outside, and calmly broke it in half.
I didn’t cry too much over this. I knew how close I had come to hurting my Dad with my stupidity. I didn’t expect to ever get another bb gun either. That is why I was so surprised when my Dad bought me another one the next year. I guess he thought I had wised up enough to know how to use it this time. I never put a single bb in the new gun, but in my imagination John Wayne rode again.
I eventually outgrew my cowboy stage, but I never did outgrow my appreciation for my Father’s forgiveness. He showed me that even when I messed up in the worse way I was still loved. He gave me another chance and let me know that I was forgiven whether I deserved it or not. He shared with me some of the unconditional love and forgiveness. May we always embrace and share that love and forgiveness as well.

On Saturday, March 9th, I had an interview with Professor Li, a psychologist, about how Senior 3 students can release overwhelming stress. According to Professor Li, the main reason why Senior 3 students are suffering overwhelming stress is that most of them attach so much importance to the College Entrance Examination that they even look on it as their final goal. He suggests that Senior 3 students should take a positive attitude towards the exam. They had better do some exercise, which can be a helpful way to release their stress.
