Growing up in Richmond, Edlavitch enjoyed plenty of quality time with his grandfather. From Edlavitch’s young age, the two shared countless hours tending to Levine’s 1926 Ford Model A, which developed in them a working rapport (融洽) that served them well when they participated as contestants on the fourth season of Lego Masters, a reality competition show on Fox, in the fall of 2023.Edlavitch and Levine were among 12 teams chosen from over 2,000 applicants to appear on the show, hosted by Lego Batman himself, Will Arnett. Over the course of the show, the teams were tasked with creating original builds for a chance to win $100,000 and the title of Lego Master. To prepare for it, Edlavitch says, “We spent a lot of time together figuring out Lego techniques... We studied past seasons to see what the judges liked and responded to.”For Edlavitch, 21, a student at the University of Virginia studying community-focused architecture, Lego bricks build a lifetime of “play”, an essential aspect of his approach to architecture. “Lego teaches you a world perspective (视角), which is that you can take anything apart and put it back together again in a way that makes it better,” he says,“and that, I think, is what got me into architecture.”Aside from his builds on Lego Masters, Edlavitch has created a 433-brick model of the Richmond skyline and a Richmond city block. Moreover, Edlavitch says he will offer kids’ workshops that combine Lego and architecture in an approachable way, introducing the field to a new generation through “play”.According to Edlavitch, most people don’t think about architecture very seriously as a career until later high school or college, at which point a lot of these kind of old-fashioned programs are considered too late to get started, and this leads to a less diverse and less creative field. He hopes, through his builds and workshops, to model a different approach.4.How was Edlavitch and his grandfather’s performance at the show?A.Unsatisfying.B.Unexpected.C.Excellent.D.Worrying. 5.What did Edlavitch and his grandfather do for the show?A.They arranged three seasons.B.They consulted Lego Batman.C.They interviewed the judges.D.They studied Lego techniques.6.What does Edlavitch think of “play”?A.It is important for learning architecture.B.It takes up much of his study time.C.It fails to open opportunities for creation.D.It is meaningless for a new generation. 7.Why does Edlavitch decide to provide workshops for kids?A.To offer chances for them to recognize Lego.B.To develop their interest in architecture.C.To encourage them to be more serious.D.To show his talent in building Lego.Using AI, a group of researchers from Dalhouse University in Halifax have begun the work of translating the language of chickens. Dr. Suresh Neethirajan, one of the lead researchers of the study, set out to create a “universal chicken translator”, reported The Conversation.Chicken speech is actually a lot more complex than one might think. They can make different sounds, and the way they communicate with one another can be affected by their environment and age. Moreover, chickens also communicate through body language and facial expressions.Luckily, the researchers were able to use new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to help them begin to know what chickens are saying. According to The Conversation, AI can process and analyze huge amounts of sound data. It can recognize patterns and types of vocalizations (发声). Using this information and an AI technique called Natural Language Processing, the researchers began to interpret the emotional states of chickens. Moreover, the researchers also used data video to record the chickens’ expressions and facial temperatures, thus knowing how chickens respond to something stressful.Neethirajan said that his team’s interest in chicken communication isn’t just academic. “Farmers can use this knowledge to create better living conditions, leading to healthier andhappier chickens. This, in turn, can affect the quality of produce, animal health and overall farm efficiency,” he said. The more people understand animals, the more likely they are to care about their well-being. Other researchers could use the data and methods that Neethirajan and his team have collected to begin to understand other bird species, and take care of their well-being as well.As AI becomes more and more common in our lives, it can be misused more easily. Neethirajan and his team, however, are part of a push toward positive AI use. Instead of using AI for boring goals, they suggest using AI to create a better world. For this, they should be commended.8.Why is the complexity of chicken speech mentioned in paragraph 2?A.To introduce the lifestyles of chickens.B.To explain chickens’ ways of communication.C.To prove scientists’ idea of new AI technologies.D.To show the necessity to create chicken translators.9.What did Neethirajan’s team use Natural Language Processing to do?A.Observe chickens’ facial expressions.B.Track chickens’ temperatures.C.Learn about chickens’ feelings.D.Record chickens’ sounds.10.What does Neethirajan say about their finding?A.It can be beneficial to farmers.B.It needs further testing.C.It causes doubt among researchers.D.It is harmful to animals.11.What does the underlined word “commended” in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Invited.B.Praised.C.Ignored.D.Trained.Today’s teens are still going through the same physical and emotional transitions (过渡) older generations had, but they’re also burdened with pressures we never could have imagined even several years ago—from the cruel separation caused by social media to the terrifying impact of climate change. In the face of all this, how can teens overcome these challenges? While there’re no simple answers to this question, part of the way forward is learning self-compassion.Self-compassion means treating yourself with kindness and support when you’re having a hard time, being aware of difficult emotions and recognizing they’re a normal part of life. Thismay sound like no big deal, but actually, most of us do the opposite. When something’s happened that makes us feel bad, for example, we tend to be overly self-critical, often assuming that whatever happened was our fault. In a recently published study, my colleagues and I taught one group of teens the Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens (MSC-T) program. Eight sessions were designed to help them be more supportive and compassionate to themselves. Another group learned a healthy lifestyle course that included sessions on nutrition, exercise, sleep and healthy social media use.In our study, all the teens were exhibiting some anxious symptoms. The results showed that after six months, teens in the self-compassion group were over 2.5 times less likely to develop full-blown anxiety compared to teens in the healthy lifestyle group, suggesting the self-compassion course protected the teens from getting more anxious.Although we can’t determine how self-compassion is protective, we suspect it has to do with teens developing an understanding of common humanity. In one class, a teen said, “Whatever you’re feeling, you’re not alone in it. Somebody else will feel the same way, and will know where you’re coming from.”Self-compassion won’t solve all teens’ problems. But it’ll give them a new way to approach their problems without blaming themselves. As one teen said to me after taking a self-compassion course, “You know, it’s changed the way I look at myself and the world.” And that can make all the difference.12.What do most people tend to do when having a hard time?A.They criticize others.B.They seek support.C.They remain normal.D.They blame themselves.13.How did the author and his colleagues mainly draw their conclusion?A.By making comparisons.B.By listing numbers.C.By quoting sayings.D.By presenting examples.14.How can self-compassion affect teens in the author’s opinion?A.It helps develop kindness in them.B.It can give them a new viewpoint.C.It gets them to take care of others.D.It makes them emotionally weaker. 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.How Can Teenagers Get Over Challenges in Life?B.How Is Self-Compassion Used to Fight Loneliness?C.Can Self-Compassion Help Teens With Anxiety?D.Is Guiding the Teen Years Harder Than Before? While most people appreciate the health advantages that come from running, cycling, or lifting weights, fewer people understand the benefits that come from a good swim. Actually, swimming provides a series of specific benefits.Arguably, the most important one is that it promotes heart health. According to a research, the practice improves circulation and cardiovascular (心血管的) efficiency, so one’s risk of heart attack decreases. 16 , which raises your heart rate and reduces your blood pressure effectively.17 . To push yourself forward, swimming requires the use of many major muscle groups of the body. These include core muscles, neck muscles, arm, hand and shoulder muscles, chest and back muscles, plus leg and feet muscles, thus contributing to muscle strengthening.Swimming can aid in weight management goals as well. 18 . One public health analysis found that a 155-pound person burns 281 calories per hour swimming at a medium pace but can burn as many as 704 calories per hour swimming freestyle at a vigorous (强有力的) pace.Additionally, swimming has mental health benefits. Studies show that moving through water increases blood flow to the brain and causes a release of dopamine (多巴胺). 19 .Given so many benefits of swimming, why not get started? Some experts recommend a mix of both swimming and other water-related works when starting out. Above all, making the experience enjoyable is key to ensuring you stick with it. “Swimming is not just an exercise but an enjoyable and refreshing experience. 20 ,” says Lori Sherlock, an exercise physiology professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine.A.Swimming is also good for every muscle in the bodyB.Swimming is a whole-body rhythmic and dynamic activityC.The butterfly stroke burns as many as 774 calories per hourD.Research shows that repeating swim movements can burn many caloriesE.There are some techniques about swimming which need to be practicedF.In this way, swimming has even been shown to improve memory functionG.It can also enhance your physical health, mental well-being and quality of life二、完形填空I stared at the screen, re-reading the message from my friend, Noelle. 河南省南阳市第一中学校2023-2024学年高二下学期第二次月考(6月)英语试题一、阅读理解Pedal Street by BreezeReviewer Anna Martino, age 13Breeze has released Pedal Street after a two-year wait, in spite of pressure from fans and the record company. Fans had been told to expect something special and this is a masterpiece. This band’s music is exceptional. The song lyrics (歌词) express emotions that are felt by everybody, focusing on topics other artists seem to prefer not to sing about. Breeze uses an interesting mix of styles including classical strings (弦乐器) and modern guitar riffs (重复段).Thrill by SkydiggersReviewer Alexis Walker, age 14Skydiggers, a Canadian rock group, have released the album (专辑) Thrill, which was recorded over two years. Although some tunes (曲调) are difficult to tell apart from each other in the sense that Suzi Tarrant’s voice doesn’t vary from song to song, the album will soon be permanently fixed on your playlist.Silver Honeybees by Lena and the LantanasReviewer Sam Roberts, age 16Lena has been allowed to sing all types of songs here in order to really show what she can do. And in case you think that her new far-ranging style may not be attractive to a youthful teenage fan base, remember that her teen audience is sure to grow along with her as she makes more music. While some bands include good beats but have meaningless lyrics that make you feel slightly sick, or sing songs with meaningful words yet make a terrible sound, the Lantanas are different and a rare find.Hungry Rock by April SapaReviewer Julie Zhang, age 14The album covers everything a teenager can feel: love, hate, acceptance and even boredom. It is an excellent combination of easy listening, even though there are several songs that couldeasily have been left out, resulting in a better album overall.1.What can we learn about Pedal Street?A.It was a let-down for fans.B.It is emotional and unusual.C.It was prepared in a short time.D.It mainly consists of rock music.2.What does Roberts say about Silver Honeybees?A.It attracts people of all ages.B.It makes you feel heartbroken.C.It covers several types of music.D.It has both good words and sounds.3.What type of writing is this text?A.Reports.B.Music reviews.C.Advertisements.D.Eventannouncements.For the past 13 years, Martin Burrows has been working as a long-distance truck driver. Spending up to five nights a week on the road can be a lonely business, leaving him with plenty of time to notice his surroundings. “I kept seeing more rubbish everywhere and it was getting on my nerves. I decided I had to do something about it,” he says. One day, he stopped his vehicle, took out a trash bag and started picking up the garbage. The satisfaction after clearing a small area was remarkable. Before his time on the road, Burrows spent over two decades in the military as a vehicle driver. His service saw him stationed throughout Europe and also on tours in Afghanistan. After returning to civilian life, he was diagnosed with PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) and had a mental health crisis in 2017. His involvement in fundraising for Help for Heroes led him to meet a man who used model-building as a distraction from PTSD.Burrows realized that his act of roadside cleanup had a similar calming effect on his mental well-being.By 2019, Burrows had begun using his free time on the road to regularly clean up garbage.A passerby encouraged him to set up a Facebook group, which he called Truckers Cleaning Up Britain. “I was worried I’d be the laughing stock of my town for putting videos and photos up of me cleaning but people started to join,” he says. “I was amazed. The local council stepped in and gave me litter-picking supplies and we’re up to almost 3,000 members now.”Since truckers are so often on the move, the Facebook page acts as a means of raising awareness rather than a platform for organizing cleanups. Burrows expressed his intention to continue the cleanup efforts as long as his physical condition allowed, as he still found joy in the process.4.What initially caused Burrows to pick up roadside garbage?A.He wanted to kill time by picking up litter.B.He aimed to raise fund for soldiers with PTSD.C.He felt annoyed to see the increasing rubbish.D.He received the assignment from his employer.5.How did collecting roadside garbage affect Burrows’ PTSD?A.It resulted in his embarrassment.B.It increased his sense of isolation.C.It worsened his stress and anxiety.D.It brought him comfort and relief. 6.What concerned Burrows when he started Truckers Cleaning Up Britain?A.He feared being teased for his action.B.He was lacking in advanced cleanup tools.C.He was unsure about the group’s development.D.He worried about the local council’s disapproval.7.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.A Joyful Volunteer Experience B.A Trucker’s Cleanup InitiativeC.A Fighting Hero against PTSD D.A Platform for EnvironmentalistsA wild African bird that will lead people to trees with honeycomb (蜂巢) seems to somehow learn the distinct whistles and calls of the human foragers (觅食者) who live near them. This bird species has far more information about what the bees are doing than humans ever could. In Tanzania, Hadza foragers can use a special whistle to attract this bird, which will then fly down and start leading them to honey. With its noisy chattering sound, the bird is very conspicuous. Once the bird arrives at a tree with honey inside, it will rest near the beehive silently, seemingly not to disturb the bees. “That’s the signal to the Hadza to really start searching,” says Brian Wood, an anthropologist at University of California, Los Angeles. Pretty soon, the foragers will locate the hive and cut open the tree trunk. It is found that the birds are more likely to show up when the familiar signal used by the locals is being broadcast. According to the research, the birds appear 82% of the time when Hadza whistles are being played. But they appear only 24% of the time when the researchers play the whistles traditionally used in a different country. This makes it clear that the birds have learned what their human neighbors do when they want to partner up and go honey-hunting. “This is a very strong result which supports the idea that there’s a learning process involved,” says Wood. But how do the birds learn? It’s still unclear. What is clear is that this human-animal communication seems to benefit both parties, and it may go back many thousands of years. When the honeycomb is out, the birds get some of the beeswax, which they love to eat. And the human foragers get the honey—which is an enormously important food for the Hadza. Wood has calculated that the Hadza get about 10% of the calories in their annual diet with the help of the birds.8.What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in Para.2mean?A.Eye-catching.B.Care-free.C.Naughty.D.Attractive. 9.What can we know about the birds?A.They are raised by humans.B.They help cut open the tree trunk.C.They feed on honey as their annual diet.D.They can distinguish different whistles. 10.Which of the following can best describe the honey gathering?A.A complex dilemma.B.An unfair trade.C.A double-edged sword.D.A win-win cooperation.11.Which can be a suitable title for the text?A.The familiar signal in the forest.B.A talented expert in hunting the bees.C.A wonderful guide to collecting honey.D.The human-animal communication in Tanzania. As people hold different views on almost anything, we live in a judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults and imperfections of others, yet seem unaware of their own. Some misguided souls believe they have a duty to help you to be a better person by telling youwhat a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, STOP. Make a conscious decision rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic(习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What may the author think of people who prefer to judge others?A.Warm-hearted.B.Self-centered.C.Talkative.D.Responsible. 13.What does a person probably convey by saying “OK” according to paragraph 3?A.He thinks the suggestions are helpful.B.He defenses himself with the response.C.He agrees with the comments completely.D.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.14.What is the key to making an objective observer according to paragraph 4?A.Having debates.B.Accepting criticism.C.Keeping calm.D.Avoiding criticizers.15.What is the purpose of the text?A.To make a judgment on others.B.To explain some social behavior.C.To call for action against attack.D.To give advice on facing criticism. The Getting Things Done (GTD) method refers to a personal productivity methodology (方法论) that redefines how you approach your life and work. It relies on the idea that you need to simplify your workload. If you frequently feel overwhelmed or you just have too much going on, this method might be great for you. 16 However, it can indeed easily be broken down into five main components:17 Write it all down, either in a planner or a document, and don’t skip anything, even if it seems irrelevant. You will find it somehow helpful in the future.Clarify what you have written down. Look at each task and identify the steps you can take to complete it. Quickly write those down, so you break each task into steps. 18 Then consider whether it can be thrown out or handled later instead.Organize by creating a to-do list, putting action items on your calendar, assigning smaller tasks, filing away reference materials to create a timely, structured approach to getting it done.Reflect frequently and review all your organized materials on a regular basis. 19 Try using an “after-action review” to comprehensively go over what you’ve done and what you need to work on or stick with as you move forward.Engage by tackling your action items knowingly and actively. You have a list of tasks and action items, an organized system with dates and references, and a schedule for checking in with yourself. 20A little stress can push you to be more productive, but too much will have the opposite effect, so using the GTD method can really make you calm and confident.A.Seize whatever is coming into your head.B.Note down the main concerns in your daily life.C.Sometimes you may feel it tough to work out the plan.D.Then you have all in place and work toward goal completion gradually.E.The methodology of GTD may be involved enough to fill a whole book.F.This could mean every Monday, you check it, update or revise something.G.You may find that there are no actionable steps associated with some task.二、完形填空I was angry with my sixteen-year-old son Anthony, and stormed out of the house. 高二英语6月月考试题(带答案)
第1页 共12页 ◎ 第2页 共12页绝密★启用前高二英语6月月考试题第I 卷(选择题)一、 阅读理解AWith over 2.4 millon visitors every year ,Cinque Terre is one of the most-visited regions in Italy. Cinque Terre is truly special. The five candy-colored fishing villages of Riomaggiore ,Manarola ,Comiglia ,Vemazza ,and Monterosso al Mare are built into cliffs over the clean and brightly-shining Ligurian Sea. Whether you're visiting the region for a few days or a few weeks ,these are the experiences you should add to your trip pleasure.★Take a scenic hike. It's easy to visit each of the attractive villages on foot. The most popular hike is the coastal path Sentiero Azzuro. It links all five villages and offers extremely beautiful scenery of the sea ,architecture and vineyards(葡萄园). It takes about six hours to go across ,with short breaks ,but most people are going to stop in the villages for food and swimming.★Eat seafood in a cone(锥形).Dessert lovers might think that Italian ice-cream is the best thing to be served in a cone but make room for seafood cones as well. Thanks to its coastal location, Cinque Terre is full of seafood restaurants.★Get on a boat.If the weather cooperates, take the time to get out on the water. The villages look very beautiful from a boat. The cheapest and easiest way is to jump on the public ferry from one of the villages to the next, but these boats are often crowded. It's far more relaxing to take a private cruise, which departs from the docks in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vemazza, and Monterosso al Mare.★Take the train.Cinque Terre's train system is one of the most scenic in Europe. The high -speed trainruns through each of the five villages every 20 minutes or so. D .Taking the train running through the villages.BWhen I was nine yean old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids (眼皮) and the sun hum their eyes... The more I understood fish, the more I became第3页共12页◎第4页共12页effective at finding and catching them. When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to pr omote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters. 4.Why was the author upset in the fishing trips when he was nine?A.He could not catch a fish.B.His father was not patient with him.C.His father did not teach him fishing.D.He could not influence a fish as his father did.5.What did the author’s father really mean?A.To read about fish.B.To learn fishing by oneself.C.To understand what fish think.D.To study fishing in many ways.6.According to the author, fish are most likely to be found .A.in deep water on sunny daysB.in deep water on cloudy daysC.in shallow water under sunlightD.in shallow water under waterside trees7.After entering the business world, the author found .A.it easy to think like a customerB.his father’s fishing advice inspiringC.his first boss’s sales ideas reasonable D.it difficult to sell services to poor peopleCA large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the "out of sight, out of mind" principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight. The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don't believe that one's willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.Willpower may also be made less vulnerable (脆弱) to being exhausted in the first place.Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year's Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don't try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you'll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior.第5页 共12页 ◎ 第6页 共12页Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won't require making decisions at all. 8.From the studies in the passage we learn that ________. A .people have unlimited self-control B .high motivation ensures one's success C .too many temptations often lead to failure D .willpower is hardly completelyexhausted9.The underlined phrase "tap into" in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________. A .put up with B .make up for C .make use ofD .keep away from10.The author compares self —control to muscles ________. A .to explain the benefits of practicing self-control B .to show the significance of regular exercise C .to argue that self-control can he easily used up D .to prove the long-term effect of willpower11.To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer? A ."I will give up dessert and do exercise." B ."I will set three goals this new semester." C ."I will read an English novel every month." D ."I will keep myself from any temptation."DWhy is it that you can remember the name of your childhood best friend that you haven't seen in years yet easily forget the name of a person you just met a moment ago ?In other words, why are some memories stable over decades, while others disappear within minutes ?Caltech researchers carried out their work about memories in the laboratory. The research team developed a test to examine mice's neural (神经的)activity as they learn about and remember a new place. In the test, a mouse was placed in a straight enclosure( 围 场 ), about 5 feet long with white walls. Unique symbols marked different locations along the walls.Sugar water (a treat for mice )was placed at either end of the track. When a mouse was placed in the track, it was unsure of what to do at first and wandered left and right until it came across the sugar water. In these cases, single neurons were activated when the mouse took notice of a symbol on the wall. Over numerous experiences with the track, the mouse became familiar with it and remembered the locations of the sugar water. As the mouse became more familiar, more and more neurons were activated when seeing each symbol on the wall. Essentially, the mouse was recognizing where it was with respect to each unique symbol. To study how memories disappear over time, the researchers then kept back the mice from the track for up to 20 days. Upon returning to the track after this break, mice that had formed strong memories encoded (编码)by higher numbers of neurons remembered the task quickly. Even though some neurons showed different activity, the mouse's memory of the track was clearly identifiable when researchers analyzed the activity of large groups of neurons. This work shows that memories might disappear more rapidly as we age because a memory is encoded by fewer neurons, and if any of these neurons fail, the memory will be lost. The study suggests that one day, designing treatments that could encourage a higher number of neurons to encode a memory could help prevent memory loss. 12.What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A .To introduce the topic of the text. B .To show the examples of bad memory. C .To compare different people's memories. D .To prove the importance of childhood memories. 13.During the research, the mouse _______ A .lost interest in the symbols soon B .had to climb over the long white wall第7页共12页◎第8页共12页C.would get sugar water as their rewardsD.wandered left and right nervously all the time14.What is special about the mice that remembered the task quickly after the break? A.They had their neurons show different activity.B.They love sugar water better than other mice.C.They stayed in the track for over 20 days.D.They possessed more activated neurons.15.What does the last paragraph imply?A.Mice's memory seems better than humansB.The aging process of humans is unavoidable.C.Memory loss is expected to be cured in the future.D.The study has found the way to prevent neurons from failing.二、七选五You've decided your child is spoiled(宠坏的),and you want to do something about it. Is it too late? Not necessarily。

About ninety years ago most people shopped in small stores that were owned by one person or a family. Women went from the bakery to the butcher's to the grocer and on to the fruit and vegetable seller in order to get their food for the week. Then about sixty years ago, supermarkets were born. In a supermarket, people could get all the different kinds of food they needed without going to different stores. The next big change in shopping in the United States was the shopping mall. A shopping mall is a group of stores under one roof. Because malls allowed people to shop without worrying about the weather, they soon became very popular. The mall became a place for people to socialize in addition to shopping. If you walk through a mall, you will see older people sitting, chatting and drinking coffee. Malls are places for teenagers to hang out. Many teens will often just "go to the mall" and spend time with their friends. The recent change in American shopping was the superstore. Large chain stores such as Wal-Mart, Office Depot and Toys "R" Us have been built all across the United States. Because they are so large, they can buy goods at a great discount and sell them much cheaper than smaller stores.Sometimes, when they are built near small towns, many of the small town stores have to close. They just cannot compete with their giant neighbors. And now, online shopping is becoming more and more popular all over the States. People are too busy to go to the physical stores, so they go shopping over the Internet. Online shopping has lots of advantages. For instance, online stores are usually available 24 hours a day. Searching or browsing online shops can be faster than browsing the physical stores. While, online shopping also has its disadvantages. People are at higher risk of being cheated on the part of the merchant than in a physical store. And privacy of personal information may be let out.24.Which of the following shows the right order of shopping development in the United States?①small stores ②superstores③shopping malls ④shopping online ⑤supermarketsA. ①②③④⑤B.①⑤③②④C. ②③④①⑤D. ①⑤②③④25. Which is the place for people to spend time with others according to the passage?A. Shopping malls.B. Small stores.C. Supermarkets.D. Superstores.26 Why can the superstores sell products at much lower prices?A. Because they are built near small towns.B. Because they are across the United States.C. Because they sell all kinds of products people need.D. Because they can buy goods at a reduction in the price.27. What's the disadvantage of online shopping according to the passage?A. Wasting time.B. Fixed prices.C. Leaking personal information.D. No chance to do physical activitiesCAre your eyes irritated, dry, watery, blurry, seeing double or sensitive to light, and do your back and neck ache? If so, you are likely one of many people today who suffer from digital eyestrain, also called computer-vision syndrome.Eyestrain is often related to the amount of exposure to screens, the distance from eyes to screens and the use of multiple screens simultaneously. However, studies have also shown that the blue light produced by digital devices today reaches further into the eyes than other kinds of light. This light actually assists attention during the day but can result in interrupted sleep patterns at night.Scientists have also said that eyestrain is not a necessary evil, even in a modern world that revolves around technology. Changing some simple details about your relative position to screens, such as staying about 60 centimeters away, will help. Also, avoid overhead and other direct sources of light, and use shaded lamps and window blinds while looking at digitaldevices instead.Beyond the way that relates to digital screens, there are also ways to change how you view screens that are helpful in combating eyestrain. To begin with, your computer screen should be high-resolution(高清的), at least 50 centimeters wide diagonally and may require a screen filter to decrease reflections. Also, be aw are that “computer glasses〞, which cut down glare and blue light, are available and those contact lenses can increase the risk of eyestrain.Besides, to reduce your risk for computer-vision syndrome and neck, back and shoulder pain, take frequent breaks during your computer workday. Many workers take only two 15-minute breaks from their computer throughout their day. According to a recent study, discomfort and eyestrain are significantly reduced when computer workers take four additional five-minute “mini-breaks〞throughout their workday. And these additional breaks don’t reduce the workers’ productivity. Finally, many of us fall into bad habits while using digital screens that only worsen the effects of eyestrain. While viewing digital screens, many people blink one third less often than they usually do. Place a reminder on your computer to “blink〞so that your eyes don’t dry out. Also, rest your eyes’ focusing muscles by using the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The causes of eyestrain.B. The dangers of eyestrain.C.The symptoms of eyestrain.D. The effects of eyestrain.29.Which of the following ways might not be helpful in relieving eyestrain?A. Breaking bad habits.B. Employing blue light.C. Adjusting your position.D. Changing your hardware.30.It can be inferred from the passage that_______ .A. overhead lights make the eyes less tiredB. taking frequent breaks reduces eyestrainC. people tend to blink more often at a computerD. technology and eyestrain unavoidably go hand in hand31.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions. Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb to new stimulation(刺激) and new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits. The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring.Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first. The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, t o take a moment to see what’s around them.I asked them what they’d seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.32.According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ____________.A.anxious to do wondersB.sensitive to ot hers’ feelingsC.likely to develop unpleasant habitsD.eager to explore the world around them33.What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?A.To avoid jumping to conclusions.B.To stop complaining all the time.C.To follow the teacher’s advice.D.To admit mistakes honestly.34.Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?A.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.B.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.C.The natural beauty isn’t attractive to them.D.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.35.In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should __________.A.try our best to protect natureB.get rid of some bad habits in our daily lifeC.open our mind to new things and ideasD.fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world第二节〔一共5小题;每一小题3分,满分是15分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项,选项里面有两项为多余选项。

But when we moved to Costa Rica which was an insect center, there were scorpions under the fridge, a stick insect and a tarantula(狼蛛), the size of a dinner plate, wandering around the courtyard. To begin with, I was scared to death, and got away from them as quickly as possible. But slowly things changed. With no TV, no radio and often staying at our house for days in this rainforest, I started to get used to these uninvited visitors. It was for a long time that I was gradually used to them. Then I kept an eye out for them and finally was delighted to see them no matter what they were.Soon when a creature came to visit, I'd call the kids over, take photos and even pose with them. We'd try to work out what these creatures were doing, see where they were going and pick them up if they seemed safe. Not all the wildlife was traditionally frightening. We gently held panic-stricken hummingbirds that were trapped in the house and set them back in the wild. We listened out for the woodpeckers(啄木鸟) that decorated our garden. We practiced shouting like howlingmonkeys. Those feathered and furry creatures were easy to love, and we also grew to love the seemingly unlovable when traveling in Costa Rica.Sweeping away the terror from this fresh new love, I started emailing photos of my new insect friends to human friends and family overseas. I was as proud as any new mother with my latest discoveries. Then when their replies came back saying “Disgusting!", “Ewww” or “Nasty”, I was saddened, and I could hardly remember that not so long ago I would also have been disgusted by the sight of a ten-inch cricket(蟋蟀) on my dining table.Travel changes you in ways you never expect, and changes things you never want to change. You may not imagine you could find beauty in an insect, if you look closely at it there. You may not think you could love the unlovable. And if you take time to wonder and open your heart to the possibility, love can spread in anywhere.4、What do we know about the author when she arrived in Costa Rica?A.She missed TV and radio very much.B.She quickly got used to the life there.C.She enjoyed sharing her home with insects.D.She was afraid of the insects at first.5、Why was the author sad after getting the replies to her photos?A.Because the insects looked really disgusting.B.Because she was not so good at taking photos.C.Because her love to insects was not understood.D.Because she missed her friends and family overseas.6、What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.The insects are not poisonous as imagined.B.Travel changes our views about the world.C.Not all lives should be equally treated.D.Travel helps us change nature as we like.7、What is the best title for the text?A.How did I fall in love with insects?B.Welcome to the insects centre!C.Search for fun in Costa Rica!D.How did I start my travel?CIndia's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday developed a series of new high-producing rice species, including herbicide-tolerant(耐除草剂的) rice that can be directly planted into the soil, cutting the huge expenses on water and farm workers. In India, the world's biggest rice exporter, the traditional method of rice growing requires farmers to grow seeds in nurseries, and then wait for 20 to 30 days before transplanting the small plants by hand into the fields that are ankle-deep in water. With the new seed species, developed by the state-run Indian Agricultural Research Institute, farmers only need to water the field once to moisten(使湿润) the soil before planting the rice. Besides, the traditional method also uses a lot of water to control weeds as herbicides are costly and often do not distinguish between the rice and the unwanted weeds.Government scientists said the new rice species contains a gene that would allow farmers to use a common, inexpensive herbicide without worrying about any side effects. “Our focus is very high on new seeds that can be adapted to new conditions, especially in changing climates,” Modi said.Water conservation is likely to be the main attraction of the new rice species in India, where farmers rely heavily on monsoon(季风) rains. “The traditional method uses 3,000 to 5,000 liters(升) of water to produce 1 kg of rice. The new species could cut water use by at least 50% to 60%,” farmers and government officials say. “For farmers like us, the main concern was the management of water, and the new species takes care of that concern,” said Ravindra Kajal, who grows rice on his 9-acre farmland in the northern state of Haryana.8、What is the advantage of the new rice species?A.It can remove all the weeds.B.It can be planted in any field.C.It needs less water to grow.D.It needs less soil to grow.9、Why can farmers use a common herbicide to the new rice species?A.Because the new crop species contains herbicide itself.B.Because the new crop species resists a common herbicide.C.Because the common herbicide is relatively cheaper.D.Because the common herbicide can moisten the soil.10、What makes India consider planting the new rice species?A.Its climate.B.Its plentiful funds.C.Its tradition.D.Its lack of herbicide.11、What is the main idea of the text?A.India has completely changed its rice species.B.The farmers prefer planting new rice species.C.India is trying to promote its new rice species.D.The new rice species produces the most rice in India.DNext to a tall building, the Muziekplein forest is one of seven such special and very small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 tiny forests across the Netherlands. It's about the size of a basketball court. Before it was planted, the area was a parking lot.By the end of this year, according to IVN Nature Education, an organization leading the country's plan, there will be 200 such small forests in the Netherlands. In many other countries, communities are creating such small-area and native forests as positive responses to big environmental challenges. The forests can be any shape, but must be at least four meters wide based on IVN's instructions. A tiny forest can be built under a year. And it generally includes between 20 and 40 different tree species.Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the idea has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt launched IVN's Tiny Forest plan with the goal of making it easier for children to know the significance of protecting environment. He thinks it is popular because people are becoming more and more aware of major environmental challenges. It's a very practical way for people to do something positive considering climate change and loss of biodiversity.Data released by Wageningen University researchers in April shows that the forests hold a range of animal and plant species. Across the 11 tiny forests in astudy, volunteers observed 636 animal species. They also recognized 298 plant species in addition to the original species planted in the areas. Daily maintenance of the forests sometimes involves obliterating unwanted weeds, but in general, new plant species, such as wildflowers, are allowed to grow, according to Bleichrodt.Suzanne Valkman, head of the World Wildlife Fund(WWF) Netherlands forests unit, said, “I was just amazed to see how many total species were recognized.” A WWF report in 2020 found that wildlife populations in the Netherlands decreased by half over the last three decades. Butterflies, birds and reptile species were particularly hard hit. Valkman said, “The Tiny Forest data shows that the small project can improve that biodiversity in cities.”12、What is the feature of the Muziekplein forest?A.It has a small size.B.It includes only rare species.C.It has an interesting shape.D.It is beside a park lot.13、What's the purpose of creating tiny forests in the Dutch city?A.To make a great profit out of them.B.To raise the awareness of kids' education.C.To set an example to other countries.D.To help improve the local environment.14、What does the underlined word “obliterating” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Checking.B.Protecting.C.Removing.D.Discovering.15、Why did the author mention Suzanne Valkman's words?A.To describe the current situation of wildlife species.B.To show the effects of the Tiny Forest plan.C.To explain the importance of biodiversity.D.To encourage all of us to plant more trees.二、七选五(本部分共1大题,5小题,每小题2.0分,共10.0分)AFrom the moment you wake up each day, you're faced up with a variety of choices. Dutch beach####ber (海滩拾荒者) Wim Kruiswijk has accumulated a collection of 1,200 messages-in-bottles over the course of nearly 4 decades and has responded to almost all of them.
68-year-old Kruiswijk says that his unusual hobby began in 1983 when he found three drift bottles (漂流瓶) on his local beach, each containing letters and return addresses. He wrote to all three addresses and was surprised to receive responses from each one. It was this experience that aroused his interest in hunting and collecting messages in bottles, and he hasn’t stopped looking for them since.
“I find my messages in bottles on the beach of Zandvoort, where I live, and on the Dutch Islands,” Kruiswijk recently told Great Big Story. “Messages in bottles are slow mail. It takes you days, or weeks, or months to find a bottle. ”
In the early years, Kruiswijk would find as many as 50 bottles a year, but since 2000 that has slowed to around 20-30 finds, mainly due to beach cleaning efforts. He believes that the rise of the Internet has also played a role in the diminishing number of messages in bottles, telling Dutch news site PZC, “I used to get a response at half the bottle messages that I answered. Now that’s less; many people want ‘instant satisfaction’.”
Throwing a message in a bottle out into the sea is a longstanding human tradition dating back to the time of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, about 310 BC,who used the bottles to study water currents. Scientists still apply the method to this day, as a means to help researchers develop ocean circulation maps, and to crowdsource scientific studies of ocean currents.
In the past bottles have also been used to send distress messages from sailors in trouble. They also have been used for memorial tributes, or to send loved ones’ ashes on a final journey. One of the more ####mon uses though is just to send invitations out to prospective pen pals, a quaint notion in these modern times, but, as Kruiswijk so clearly shows, an effective one.
4.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. Kruiswijk found secrets hidden in drift bottles.。
