Unit 1. Famous Universities

Passage A. The University of Oxford

[1] The University of Oxford is the oldest university in Britain and one of the world's most famous institutions of higher learning, established during the 1100s. It is located in Oxford, England, about 80 kilometers northwest of London.

[2] Oxford is very competitive: more than 19 000 people applied for around 3200 undergraduate places for entry in 2016, which means that Oxford receives, on average, nearly 6 applications for each available place. 40% of the total student body — over 9 300 students — is citizens of foreign countries. Students come to Oxford from over 140 countries and territories. There are 38 Oxford colleges plus six permanent private halls, which are similar to colleges except that they tend to be smaller, and were founded by various religious groups.

Passage A. How to Have Fun at Work如何从工作中得到乐趣

[1] In the late nineteenth century physicists started to freak out. Some of them had noticed even earlier that everything they knew about Newtonian physics was suspiciously letting them down. They had been gaining a better and better understanding of the world of the very small elements. Imagine their shock when the electrons they had become so comfortable with as particles started displaying the properties of waves. Their brains must have exploded.

[2] It took an extra hundred years for our brains to have the same reaction. Today we are in shock at the realization that nothing good can happen at work while we obsess about particles. The numbers in the cells on our spreadsheets are just the aftereffects of the waves traveling through a building or a team.

6B-Finding a Balance

Passage B. Finding a Balance

“With a common-sense approach to food, I satisfy my hunger and don’t feel deprived.”[1] I was a chubby kid who grew into an overweight adult. I was constantly teased

for being heavier than the other kids, leaving me feeling shy and self-conscious. I tried several diets, but none worked, and I ended up gaining weight. Another factor contributing to my weight gain was my love for cooking, especially rich, high-fat desserts, which I enjoyed preparing and, of course, eating.

[2] When I finished high school at age 18, I weighed 215 pounds. Lacking the self-confidence to go to a new, faraway school, I decided to stay close to home instead of going away to college. I continued with my unhealthful eating habits and felt more miserable as the weight came on, but I did nothing about it except buy larger plus-size clothes.

Unit 3. Passage A. The Development of Advertising

[1] Advertising is the techniques and practices used to bring products, services, opinions, or causes to public notice for the purpose of persuading the public to respond in a certain way toward what is advertised. Most advertising involves promoting a good that is for sale, but similar methods are used to encourage people to drive safely, to support various charities, or to vote for political candidates, among many other examples.

[2] Advertising started as early as medieval time by word of mouth and the first step toward modern advertising came with the development of printing in the 15th and 16th centuries. The real growth of an advertising industry came with the great expansion of business in the 19th century. It was that century, primarily in the United States, that saw the establishment of advertising agencies and by the early 20th century agencies became involved in producing the advertising message itself, including copy and artwork, and by the 1920s agencies had come into being that could plan and execute complete advertising campaigns, from initial research to copy preparation to placement in various media.

U1 TOPIC 1 Famous Universities

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Universities”.

1.What kind of universities are good universities in your eyes?

First of all, it should have a strong studying atmosphere. I hope students there can talk about their own opinions freely. Secondly, the teachers are high standard. Then, teaching equipment should be good, which will contribute to our study.

2.Do you think universities should try their best to provide their students with more scholarships? Why or why not?

I don’t think more scholarships are necessary. Merit-based scholarships, which are mainly awarded by universities, aim to encourage the students to learn more. It’s a motivation, or a reputation. Students who have financial problems could apply for need-based scholarships. So it’s not necessary for universities to provide more scholarships.
