It was sent to Klonovska by a young girl in Poland. They exchanged letters in what is known as a pen pal program — when people write letters to each other without actually meeting. The letter, together with 17 others, was discovered this past summer when a wall was taken down in a former post office in Vilnius. The letters, from the late 1960s and early 1970s, were likely hidden by a postal worker after he searched them for money or valuables, Vilutis said. The senders were family members or pen pals from places such as Australia, Poland, or Russia. Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. Post office workers spent months looking for the people who were supposed to receive the letters — the recipients. Only five recipients were found. In several cases, children of dead recipients were handed a lost letter.Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of Lithuania Post, said we felt a moral duty to do this. Zebrauskaite added, “One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea. People were emotional (动情的). Some people felt they saw a part of daily life of their dead parents.”In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koczary in Poland, a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village. Now in her 60s, Klonovska has no memory of Ewa. She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address in an advertisement for pen-pals in a newspaper. Their relationship stopped after the letter was not delivered. “The loss was not life-changing,”said Klonovska. She then asked, “What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor (求婚者) to his love, and their wedding never happened?”4.The word “pranking” in paragraph 2 means ______.A.playing a trick on B.paying attention toC.finding fault with D.getting in touch with5.Why were some people emotional when they received the letters?A.The arrival of the lost letters had been long expected.B.They knew more about their parents through the letters.C.A postal worker hid the letters for a selfish purpose.D.Postal workers overcame difficulties to find the recipients.6.What did Klonovska try to express in the last paragraph?A.All these letters were important reminders of memories.B.She didn’t mind if the post office gave her the letter.C.The course of her life would never change for the lost letter.D.The lost letters could have caused serious consequences. The history of microbiology begins with a Dutch cloth maker named Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, a man of no formal scientific education. In the late 1600s, Lecuwenhoek, inspired by the magnifying lenses he used to examine cloth, built some of the first microscopes. He developed a technique to improve the quality of tiny, rounded lenses, some of which could magnify an object up to 270 times. After removing some plaque from between his teeth and examining it under a lens, Lecuwenhoek found tiny twisting creatures, which he called “animalcules”.His observations, which he reported to the Royal Society of London, are among the first descriptions of microbes, Leeuwenhoek discovered an entire universe invisible to the human eye. He found different microbes in samples of pond water, rain water, and human blood. He gave the first description of red blood cells, observed plant tissue, examined muscle, and investigated the life cycle of insects.Nearly two hundred years later, Leeuwenhoek’s discovery of microbes helped French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur to develop his “theory of disease”. This concept suggested that disease originates from tiny organisms attacking and weakening the body. Pasteur’s theory later helped doctors to fight infectious diseases including anthrax, diphtheria, polio, smallpox, tetanus, and typhoid. All these breakthroughs were the result of Leeuwenhoek’s original work. Leeuwenhoek did not foresee this legacy. In a 1716 letter, he described his contribution to science this way:“My work, which I’ve done for a long time, was not pursued in order to gain the praise I now enjoy, but chiefly from a strong desire for knowledge, which I notice resides in me more than in most other men. And therefore, whenever I found out anything remarkable, I have thought it my duty to put down my discovery on paper, so that the scientific community might be informed thereof. ”7.Which of the following best describes Leeuwenhoek?A.A trained researcher with an interest in microbiology.B.A curious amateur who made pioneer studies of microbes.C.A talented scientist interested in finding a cure for disease.D.A bored cloth maker who accidentally made a major discovery.8.The underlined phrase ”this legacy“in paragraph 3 refers to________.A.the discovery of microbes.B.Pasteur’s theory of disease.C.Leeuwenhoek’s contribution.D.the origin of the tiny organism. 9.What does the quote from Leeuwenhoek’s letter suggest?A.He admitted that many of his discoveries happened by chance.B.He considered his work to be central to later medical breakthroughs.C.He was greatly concermed with improving people’s living conditions.D.He believed the sharing of knowledge was a key to scientific progress.Batman may not have any superpowers, but his inspiration certainly does.More than 1, 400 bat species live around the world, except in Antarctica and a few remote islands. Over their 50 million years of evolution, bats have developed clever solutions to life’s challenges, from a built-in sonar (声呐) system for finding food to fast, flexible wings that produce the fastest level-flight speed of any animal on Earth.“There is still a lot to learn, but it is clear that bats really do have superpowers,” says Rodrigo Medellin, an ecologist. “Bats are showing us how to live a better life, for instance, by serving as models for healthy living and long lives.”As a general rule in biology, smaller animals have shorter lives than larger ones. But bats are rule breakers: they’re the longest-lived mammals (哺乳动物) relative to their body size. Recently, scientists looked inside bats’ cells for the secrets to their exceptionally long lives. They focused on telomeres (端粒), which are the protective structures found at the ends of chromosomes (染色体). In most animals, telomeres tend to get shorter with age. But the telomeres of the longest-lived group of bats, Myotis, do not appear to shrink (收缩) with age. Understanding why bats live so long may help humans live longer one day.In addition to living longer, bats remain healthy throughout their lives, with very low risk of developing cancer. Furthermore, bats can carry deadly viruses without getting sick. So further research into their unique immune (免疫的) systems may actually give insight into how people can live with viruses andnot get sick.Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems. Three out of every four bat species eat insects. Many are pests that cause damage to important agricultural crops, such as cotton. Scientists estimate that insect-eating bats may save U. S. farmers about 1 billion per year. In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.“Bats are unsung heroes of biodiversity,” says Medellin. “It’s about time we appreciated them.”10.What did scientists recently find?A.Animals’ telomeres rarely shrink with age.B.Myotis’s telomeres do not shorten as they age.C.Smaller animals usually live shorter lives than larger ones.D.More research into bat telomeres could help people live more healthily.11.What is the author’s intention in writing the last paragraph but one?A.To show what bats feed on.B.To call on people to protect bats.C.To explain how bats benefit the farmers.D.To highlight the importance of bats to the ecosystem.12.What would be a suitable title for this text?A.Bats Offer Clues to Treating DiseasesB.How Bats Deal with Life’s ChallengesC.Scientists Unlock the Secrets to Long LivesD.Why Bats Are Superheroes of the Animal WorldChina’s digital economy is expected to provide a strong boost to global economicrecovery, but more efforts should be made to bridge the digital divide and promote data flow, said industry experts and top company officials on Friday.“China’s digital economy, which is indeed in the fast lane, has become a new growth driver of the country’s economic growth amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It has and will play an important role in driving economic recovery globally, “said Gong Ke, president of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and executive director of the Chinese Institute for the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development strategies.“While data is an important factor of digital economy, more effort should be made to bridge the digital divide to benefit more user groups. To be specific, we need to improve infrastructure (基础设施) construction and the sharing of computing power from leading companies to smaller ones, ”Gong said.He made the remarks at a sub-forum of the fourth Hongqiao International Economic Forum during the ongoing China International Import Expo in Shanghai.Liu Jun, president of Bank of Communications, said that a winner-takes-all phenomenon is happening during the development of the platform-based economy because the country’s digital economy has developed at an unparalleled speed with insufficient supervision over the past decade. “Therefore, it is necessary to break down the existing information barriers to promote the free flow of data. The value of data cannot be maximized if a certain company uses it exclusively. Although this kind of small talk might seem meaningless, the conversations are important.Baby talk is an important piece of speech and language development. Studies show that when babies are exposed to such talk every day throughout their first year of life, they develop stronger vocabularies than other kids. And the little ones are eager for it. 17 So when parents apply it, they help their babies learn more words and promote socialinteraction.Child-directed speech wasn’t always valued. Before the middle of the 20th century, researchers largely ignored it as a subject of study. Until the early 1990s, many developmental psychologists and linguists believed that without any help, we would learn how to speak and form complete sentences by ourselves. 18But over the past few decades, numerous studies have found that throughout their first year of life, when babies are regularly exposed to such talk in addition to normal speech, they process, learn, and remember words presented to them in singsong tones (语调) better. One reason may have to do with how babies interact with the world. 19 However, but their ears perk up (竖起来) when a caregiver makes that singsong tone.20 In a 2020 study, researchers found that bat parents also used a different tone to communicate with their babies. Baby talk has also been observed in a few other species like squirrel monkeys.A.Baby talk tends to be spoken at a slower rate.B.Humans aren’t the only ones that use baby talk.C.They tend to ignore adult conversations and other background noises.D.Luckily, parents can be taught methods to improve their parentese skills.E.Some doctors even advised parents to avoid using baby talk, thinking it too silly.F.The distinct tone of parentese catches their attention, allowing them to benefit from it.G.The singsong tone we switch to when interacting with young children can have many names.

Nanjing University
Nanjing University

ABored with your life? Dreaming of something different? I always wonder what life would be like400 kmabove my head. That's where the International Space Station orbits the earth, with six astronauts living and working on board, for months at a time. How do they sleep? They spend the night floating in a sleeping bag inside a small cubicle (小隔间) on the ceiling. American astronaut Sunita Williams explains, “It's like a little phone booth, but it's pretty comfortable and it doesn't matter if I turn overand sleep upside down. I don't have any sensation (感觉) in my head that tells me I'm upside down.”Brushing your teeth in a place where you can't have a tap or a sink can be a challenge. Can you imagine the mess that running water would make in zero gravity? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield uses a straw to put a big blob of water from a sealed bag onto an ordinary toothbrush and adds a little toothpaste which he has to swallow when he's done.Daily exercise is essential. The lack of gravity makes bones more fragile and muscles lose strength — so astronauts are encouraged to work out for at least two hours a day.The role of astronauts in the International Space Station is to act as lab technicians for scientists back on earth. So they spend their time maintaining their environment and performing and monitoring experiments in a confined space about the size of a Boeing 747. Almost every task is carefully planned by mission control — although most astronauts spend their first days losing things until they get used to sticking everything they use to the walls with Velcro, duct tape (强力胶带) or clips (夹子).One of their most valued perks (额外待遇) is the view from “the office”, dominated by that gigantic blue ball down there, sitting in the darkness of space. Wow! Absolutely breathtaking!1. When they sleep upside down, the astronauts willnot get dizzy because ________.A. they don't feel itB. they sleep in the daytimeC. they sleep in special sleeping bagsD. they are trained to adapt to the conditions of weightlessness2. What parts become weak if astronauts don't exercise?A. Their teeth and bones.B. Their brains and bones.C. Their bones and muscles.D. Their teeth and muscles.3. What is the passage mainly about?A. The Problems We Met in Space.B. Living and Working in Space.C. How to Become an Astronaut.D. The International Space Station.BIf you could travel back in time, which period of history would you visit? It’s a great question to ask your friends, and time travel is the subject of many science fiction films. Of course, sci-fi is familiar to most of us, butwhat is cli-fi? The simple answer is climate fiction which focuses on the subject of climate change. Many of the cli-fi examples we watch tend to be disaster films. It could be solar flares (太阳耀斑), ice ages devastating (摧毁) the planet, extreme flooding swamping the earth with water, or super-storms that threaten life as we know it. While films and novels of this style are often subject to the typical images of a hero or heroine battling to save the day, what sets it apart from most sci-fi films is that the plots will often draw on apparently reasonable outcomes in the near future.Climate change and the potential threats have long been established. Some believe that the issue of climate change has even led to more fans watching films to learn more about what's happening to the world – seeing it as a form of edutainment. A study conducted by the Yale programme on Climate Change Communication tested the effects that two climate fiction novels can have on its readers and found “significant positive effects” in terms of their attitudes and beliefs towards the climate crisis – for example, understanding global warming will harm them and future generations. Most climate films are not only extremely popular action films, but also cause our fear of what some see as the approaching end of the world. This sounds bad, but according to a study conducted on 310 adults in the US, watching such scary films can help us feel more prepared and less alone in situations such as the pandemic (疫情). So, it looks like cli-fi is hereto stay – and there seem to be some benefits. Whether it’s there to educate, entertain or prepare you for a climate crisis, it might have a role to play.4. Which of the following may be the subject of cli-fi?A. Time travel.B. Global warming.C. Weather forecast.D. Economic climate.5. What can we learn about cli-fi films from paragraph 2?A. They are often about extreme natural disasters.B. They want to show that man can conquer nature.C. They usually have similar plots with sci-fi films.D. They can show the true near future of the world.6. Why is the study conducted by the Yale programme mentioned in paragraph 3?A. To prove that climate change has potential threats.B. To show that people like climate fiction novels.C. To tell that cli-fi novels have positive effects on readers.D. To explain how the climate crisis affect the human being.7. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Cli-fi films are very popular as action films.B. A study was conducted on 310 adults in theUS.C. The pandemic make people scared and alone.D. Cli-fi films are useful and will be here to stay.CImprovements to energy efficiency, such as LED lights, are seen by many authorities as a top priority for cutting carbon emissions. Yet a growing body of research suggests that arebound effect could wipe out more than half of the savings from energy efficiency improvements, making the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change even harder to hit.A team led by Paul Brockway at the University of Leeds, UK, looked at the existing 33 studies on the impact of the rebound effect. First comes the direct rebound: for instance, when someone buys a more efficient car, they may take advantage of that by driving it further. Then comes the indirect rebound: fuel savings leave the owner with more money to spend elsewhere in the economy, consuming energy.Although the 33 studies used different methods to model the rebound effect, they produced very consistent estimates of its impact, leading the team to conclude that the effect wipes out, on average, 63 percent of the anticipated energy savings.“We're not saying energy efficiency doesn't work. What we're saying is rebound needs to be taken more seriously,” says Brockway. The idea that increased efficiency may not deliver the hopedfor savingsdates back to the Jevons paradox(悖论), named after the economist William Stanley Jevons, who, in 1865,observed that more efficient coal use led to more demand for coal.If the rebound effect does prove to be as big as suggested, it means future global energy demand will be higher than expected and the world will need far more wind and solar power and carboncapture technology than is currently being planned for.But that doesn't mean nothing can be done to limit the rebound effect. One answer is to double down on energy efficiency and do twice as much to achieve the same effect.8. Which of the following is a rebound effect?A. A man uses LED lights to cut carbon emissions.B. A company uses coal more efficiently to reduce waste.C. A family saves money by using energysaving devices.D. A lady spends savings from her fuel efficient car on more clothes.9. How did Paul Brockway's team carry out their research?A. By interviewing economists.B. By analyzing former studies.C. By modeling the rebound effect.D. By debating about the Jevons paradox.10. What would Paul Brockway probably agree with?A. Authorities should dismiss energy efficiency.B. Worldwide efforts to preserve energy are in vain.C. The rebound effect helps protect the environment.D. More attention should be paid to the rebound effect.11. What's the author's attitude towards limiting the rebound effect?A. Positive.B. Pessimistic.C. Doubtful.D. Disapproving.DMy friend and I went traveling inTasmania,Australialast December. We settled in our Airbnb accommodation,a cozy apartment, not long after we arrived inHobart, the capital city. After briefing us on the kitchen's facilities and the whereabouts of the bedroom and bathroom, our hostess Geraldine resumed her ironing work, which seemed to have been interrupted by our arrival. She was ironing what looked like security guard uniforms, and we soon found out that she worked in a local prison. And when she detected the curiosity in our tones, she offered a tour at the prison in her SUV. My friend and I exchanged a “this is incredible” look and said “yes” immediately. As we drove, she told us about the buildings that we were passing, the local market and how to get to MONA,Tasmania's well-known contemporary art gallery. And of course we got to hear some background information about the prison. According to our hostess, it currently holds Martin Bryant, a notorious criminal who cheated 35 people out of their property. We could see the high level of security from the layers upon layers of wires surrounding the gray structure inside.Getting to know a city in such a local way is something I would never be able to do by talking to a hotel receptionist, and this is what I like best about the apartment-sharing experience, not to mention the fact that it's usually cheaper than hotel rooms. But I'm fully aware of the risks of Airbnb, which is why I did my homework before booking online—I checked the reviews of the accommodation to avoid possible safety problems. That said, it is the mutual trust between a host and a guest that fascinates me—the interesting feeling of building a bond with a total stranger.12. Why did the hostess drive us to the prison?A. She planned to send the uniform to the prison.B. She found our curiosity about the prison.C. She wanted to show off her SUV.D. She needed to offer a tour for us.13. Which of the following can best explain the word “notorious” in Paragraph 5?A. Unfamiliar to everyone.B. Particularly disappointing.C. Well known for being bad.D. Extremely generous to others.14. Compared with hotels, what is the writer's favorite of the Airbnb accommodation?A. It is cheaper in most cases.B. It supplies a better living condition.C. It offers a much safer accommodation.D. It provides a chance to know local culture.15. What does the author think of finding accommodation on Airbnb?A. Disapproving.B. Supportive.C. Neutral.D. Doubtful.

None of the three mentioned above.BWhen my father died, one of the tasks that fell to me was to sort through and decide which objects to save and which to throw away. Now I look at the objects of my life as if I were dead, wondering, what will my children do with the human skull(颅骨)that sits on the bookcase? They’ve been wanting to throw it out for some years, but will they know how much can be learned from living with a skull? And I know they will throw the white plastic head of a horse on my desk into a rubbish bag without a thought, never knowing that it is the only piece remaining from the first chess set I owned. It is me at age twelve. But the final decisions are left to those who know us least—our children. I was the closest to my father and knew him well; however, only when I was going through his study did I learn he had collected picture postcards of hotels. What was I to do with all the objects that had been him? The sad part of me wanted to put everything in my car and take it home. The rational won, however, and I filled rubbish bags with old newpers, magazines, apologizing to his spirit as I did. I could not throw out the thousands of pictures he had taken on his travels. I brought the pictures home, though I will never look at them. I brought twelve boxes of my father home.I look at the objects that are my life and the only way my children can satisfy me is by not touching a thing. But they must if I am to go on with my death. And I wonder how many boxes of me will my children keep? I look at these objects that are me and know, too, that they are symbols ofhow alone I and each of us is, for no one knows what any object means except he or she who owns it. Every object of our lives is a memory, and emotion surrounds around it, hiding and protecting a tiny truth of the heart. Only I have the memories of when and how each one was obtained; I look at the objects that are me, and the memories are warm and permeated(弥漫)with love.24. Why does the author keep the plastic head of a horse?A. Because his father gave it to him as a gift.B. Because it makes him a very good chess player.C. According to the last paragraph, the objects we save .A. make us proud of our family heritageB. are reminders of personal experiencesC. retell shared memories with our childrenD. are usually quite expensive and valuableCLike many inventions, language translators were imagined by writers long before they became real. In Hugo Gernsback’s 1911 novel A Romance of the Year 2660, characters use a video telephone that can translate from one language to another. A language translator also appears in Murtay Leinster’s 1945 First Contact. In that story, humans and creatures from another planet construct a translation device together after making first contact with one another. The idea of thelanguage translator didn’t become truly popular, however, until the “universal translator” appeared in the Star Trek series, which delighted television viewers in the 1970s. That device was universal in the sense that it could translate any language that it encountered. The first real language translator was demonstrated by engineers from the IBM company and Georgetown University in 1954. Their machine could only translate Russian sentences into English.Language translators have come a long way since then. Today, online translations can be accessed easily at no cost to users. With translation apps like Google Translate or Translate, users sometimes don’t even have to look things up. All they need to do is point their cellphone’s camera at some writing, and a translation instantly appears. If users want to translate something being said aloud, they just turn on their phone’s microphone. All of these features save time and effort.Translation apps make foreign travel much easier than before. They are invaluable when it comes to communicating with taxi drivers or hotel staff who don’t speak a traveler’s native language. But these apps are far from perfect. Sometimes a translation makes no sense, forcing the user to guess what the translation means. At other times, the user might not know that the translation has failed until he or she shows it to native speaker.28. What aspect of language translators is covered in the first paragraph?A. Their models.B. Their development.C. Their origins.D. Their popularity.29. What do we know about Google Translate and iTranslate?A. They bring convenience in different situations.B. They can be used without access to the Internet.C. Their users have to type things in for translations.D. They can only function with the aid of other apps.30. What is the author’s attitude towards language translators?A. Disapproving.B. Supportive.C. Dismissive.D. Objective.31. What is the most suitable title for the passage?A. How do language translators develop?B. Why do we need language translators?C. How do science stories become reality?D. Why can’t we depend on language translators?DAs artificial-intelligence products steadily improve at pretending to be human—an AI produced voice that books restaurant reservations by phone, for example, or a chat robot that answers consumers’ questions online people will increasingly be put in the worrying situation of not knowing whether they are talking to a machine. But the truth may make such products less effective: recent research finds a trade-off between tranrency(透明度)and cooperation in human-computer interactions. The study used a simple game in which paired players make a series of decisions to cooperate with or betray their partner. In the long run, it pays for both to keep cooperating. The researchers used an Al product, when pretending as a person, which was better than people are at getting human partners to cooperate. But previous work suggested people tend to disbelieve machines, so the scientists wondered what would happen if the robot revealed itself as such. The team hoped people playing with a known robot would recognize its ability to cooperate and would eventually overcome their disbelief. “Sadly, we failed at this goal,” says Talal Rahwan, a computer scientist at New York University in Abu Dhabi and a senior author on the paper, published last November in Nature Machine Intelligence. “No matter what the robot did, people just stuck to their prejudice.” A robot playing openly as a robot was less likely to get cooperation than another human, even though its strategy was clearly more beneficial to both players. In an additional experiment, players were told, “data suggest that people are better off if they treat the robot as if it were a human.” It had no effect.Virginia Dignum, who leads the Social and Ethical Artificial Intelligence group at Umea University in Sweden and was not involved in the study, praises the researchers for exploring the tranrency effectiveness trade-off, but she would like to see it tested in a different setup.Talal’s team said that in the public field, people should be asked for agreement to be deceived(欺骗)about a robot’s identity. It cannot be on an interaction-by-interaction basis, or else the “deception” obviously will not work. But overall permission for deception still raises ethical quandaries(困境). Dignum says humans should have the option to know after they have interacted with a robot—but if she is calling customer service with a simple question, she adds, “I just want to get my answer.”32. The underlined word “trade-off” is closest in meaning to .A. distinguishingB. balancingC. switchingD. combining33. According to the passage, what attitude do people generally take towards robots?A. Positive.B. Casual.C. Uncertain.D. Distrustful.34. What can be inferred about the research findings from the third paragraph?A. They fail to support the team’s assumption.B. They are different from the previous findings.C. They will draw people’s attention to robots’ problems.D. They can explain why people treat a robot like a human.35. According to the passage, what is Virginia Dignum most likely to agree with?A. Tall Rahwan’s research findings can’t apply to the real-world situations.B. Overall permission for interacting with a robot does more harm than good.C. People needn’t be told that they are interacting with a robot on all occasions.D. The relationship between tranrency and effectiveness has been fully explored.
