鸟群中的“幽灵”科学松鼠会发表于 2011-01-31作者:胡锋黄昏的时候,在世界上很多地方都可以看到这样的景象:成百上千只的鸟成群在空中飞翔,仿佛形成了一个巨大的个体,它们时而形成一条长带,时而聚拢成盘状,时而形成各种依稀可辨的造型,毫不介意给地上仰头观看的人以无尽的惊奇与想象。

在19世纪30年代,英国鸟类学家Edmundd Selous 用了“通灵”(Thoughts-Transference) 这个术语来解释鸟群令人惊异的协调能力,这也许是当时很时髦的“科学词汇”吧。

但限于历史条件,他对运动群体中的鸟之间如何交流,信息如何在群体中传递毫无所知。

他的这种解释,我们其实可以选用任何看起来很玄妙的词语代替,如“思想转移”,“心灵感应”,或者简单的说,鸟群中存在一个“幽灵”。

这种解释方法很类似当人们对生命系统不太理解的时候,认为有所谓的“活力”因子在构成生命有机体的物质内,直到随着科学的进一步发展,才证明了生命物质是由普通的化学元素构成的复杂分子,从而把“活力论”送到历史的博物馆。

对鸟群以及一般的动物群体行为研究的突破来自于一个美国软件工程师Craig W. Reynolds,他研究的初衷是为了让计算机更有效率的绘制鸟群的飞行图像。

在此前,程序员编写鸟群的运动程序时,程序中都已经规定好了每只鸟的运动轨, 程序员其实是鸟群的中心指挥者。

而Reynolds在1987年发表的一篇文章中发明了一种“自组织”的算法,根据这种方法,鸟群中的每只鸟只需获取自己局部的环境的信息, 并根据这些信息自行决定自己下个时刻的运动状态。

具体说就是每只鸟每个时刻都要遵守如下三条规则:1、避免与附近的其它成员碰撞。

2、飞行方向与附近邻居的平均飞行方向一致。

3、不要落单。

可以看到, 这种算法只要求单个个体能够分析自己附近的局部环境, 符合动物因生理条件的限制而只能处理有限信息的常识。

这个算法的最大特点是整个的运动群体不再有中心的指挥者,每个群体成员根据自己的局部环境决定自己的运动状态,进而决定整个群体的运动状态。

膜翅目昆虫全世界共近100科约15 000属120 000种,中国已记载86科2 179属12 517种,占世界种类的 10.43%。
在中国的膜翅目昆虫中,东亚种类8 092种,占64.6%(表4-70);古北种类1 831种,占14.6%;东洋种类1 642种,占13.1%;广布种类170种,占1.4%;另有782种区系性质不明。86个科中,72个科都是以东亚种类占优 势,只有14个小科分别以东洋种类或古北种类居优势地位 。
膜翅目大多数种类为寄生性和捕食性,少数檀食性。蜜蜂总科取食花蜜和花粉。蚂蚁、胡蜂中均有一些捕食 性种类。很多类群为寄生性,寄生于其他昆虫或节肢动物,包括外寄生和内寄生。有些蜂把其他昆虫麻痹后带回 巢中,供其子代取食,称为狩猎蜂,例如蜾赢蜂产卵时衔泥筑巢,或寻找竹管等产卵,捕捉菜青虫等,经螫剌麻 痹后带回室内贮存。

特征分类
膜翅目( Hymenoptera)的特征明显,包括咀嚼式口器、前后翅连接靠翅钩完成等,本类群种类多、分布很广, 已知种类10万多种,估计至少25万种。主要包括各种蚁类和蜂类,根据其腹部基部是否缢缩变细,分为广腰亚目 和细腰亚目,广腰亚目是低等植食性类群,包括叶蜂、树蜂、茎蜂等类群是农林果类的害虫。

description of the skyrmion is believedto be inadequate for the rotational states such as the nucleon (I =J =12)due to centrifugal forces.We study here a simple alternative:an oblate spheroidal solution whichleads to lower masses for these baryons.As one might expect,the shape of the solution is flatter asone increases I =J whether the size of the soliton is allowed to change or not.I.INTRODUCTIONWhen Skyrme first introduced its model a few decades ago [1]to describe baryons as solitons in a non-linear field theory of mesons,the solution proposed was a spherically symmetric hedgehog ansatz.There are reasons to believe that this solution is not adequate for the rotational states such as the nucleon (I =J =12)due to centrifugal forces [2].Several treatments have been proposed in the past with relative success [3,4].In this work,we take a naive approach and propose a simple alternative.Instead of the spherically symmetric hedgehog solution,we introduce an oblate spheroidal solution.This leads to lower masses and quadrupole deformations for these baryons.Moreover,the shape of the solution is flatter as one increases I =J whether one allows the size of the soliton to change or not.II.THE STATIC OBLATE SOLITON The oblate spheroidal coordinates (η,θ,φ)are related to Cartesian coordinates through (x,y,z )=d (cosh ηsin θcos φ,cosh ηsin θsin φ,sinh ηcos θ).(1)A surface of constant ηcorresponds to a sphere of radius d flattened in the z -direction by a factor of tanh η.For ηsmall,the shape of the surface is more like that of a pancake of radius d priori a solution of the field equations derived from the Skyrme Lagrangian.Integrating over the angular variables θand φ,the static energy readsE s =ǫ dη d 4 dα41f ′2sin 2f +α42sin 4f withα21(η)=2cosh ηα22(η)=2 −2cosh η+ 2cosh 2η−1 L (η)α41(η)=2L (η)α42(η)=1cosh 2η(2cosh η+L (η))+2cosh ηcosh η−1 and the constants are defined by ǫ=2√e and d ≡eF π2d.Minimizing the static energy with respect to f (η),we then solve numerically the corresponding non-linear ordinary second-order differential equation.For calculational purposes,we set thevalue of the parameters of the Skyrme model as F π=129MeV,e =5.45(and m π=0)which coincide with those of ref.[5]obtained by fitting for the masses of the nucleon and the ∆in the hedgehog ansatz.The solution near η→0has the form f (η)∼π−a 1η,whereas in the limit η→∞one recovers the spherical symmetry with f (η)∼k2I 11 |J |2+|I |22 1I 11 J 23.(4)where |J |2and |I |2are the spin and the isospin respectively and,J 3,the z -component of the spin.We have already used the relation J 3=−I 3here which follows from axial symmetry of the ansatz.Added to the static energy E s ,it leads to the total energy M J,J 3=E s +E J,J 3rot identified with the mass of the baryon.Observables states,however,must be eigenstates of |J |2,J 3,|I |2,I 3with eigenvalues J (J +1),m J ,I (I +1),m I where the operators now refer to the laboratory system (as opposed to body-fixed operators in (??)and above).These eigenstates are taken into account by direct products of rotation matricesΩ|J,m J ,m ω|I,m I ,−m =D J m J m (Ω)D I m I −m (ω)(5)where Ωand ωare,respectively,the Euler angles for the rotation and isorotation from the body-fixed frame to the laboratory system.The explicit calculation of the energy of rotation requires in general the diagonalization E J,J 3rot .(see ref.[3]for more details)The minimization of the static energy for the spherical symmetric ansatz gives E s =8.20675ǫ,M N =8.906ǫand M ∆=11.703ǫ.For the oblate spheroidal ansatz,the parameter d is chosen in order to minimize the mass of the corresponding baryon.In general,as dincreases,the static energy E s deviates from its lowest energy value given by the spherical hedgehog configuration.On the other hand,oblate configurations have larger moments of inertia which tend to decrease the rotational kinetic energy.The existence of a non-trivial oblate spheroidal ground state for the nucleon and the ∆-isobar,as it turns out,depends mostly on the relative importance of static and rotational energy.We find that the ground state for the nucleon is almost spherical but nonetheless oblate with d=0.0013thus exhibiting a small quadrupole deformation and a slightly lower mass with respect to a spherical configuration.For the ∆-isobar,the oblateness or quadrupole deformation is even more important and accounts for a 4%decrease in mass.We obtain a minimum mass for a value of d=0.32with M ∆=11.293ǫ.Since the minimum of the ground state is affected by the oblate shape of the solution,the parameters F πand e as given in ref.[5]no longer reproduce the quantities they were designed to fit.We must readjust F πand e which determine the value of d for the nucleon and ∆-isobar respectively.After several iterations,we find F π=118.4MeV and e =5.10with d=0.0014( d =0.40)for the nucleon (∆-isobar).IV.DISCUSSIONQuadrupole deformations were found previously in the context of rotationally improved skyrmions.Contrary to our approach,these solutions involve the minimization of an Hamiltonian which also includes the(iso)rotational kinetic energy.Yet,we found that the oblate spheroidal ansatz gives lower energy than the spherical one for baryon ground states.Of course,ansatz(3)is not necessarily the lowest energy solution.It may also be interesting to consider deformations of the oblate skyrmions under scaling of the unitary transfor-mations U(r)such that U(r)=U0(ρr)to minimize the total energy of the nucleon and∆-isobar.The total energies M N(ρ)and M∆(ρ)can be minimized with respect to the scaling parameterρ,i.e.to the energically favored size of the oblate skyrmion.The energies are found to be M N(ρmin=0.868)=8.797ǫand M∆(ρmin=0.670)=10.064ǫfor both the oblate case compared with M N(ρmin=0.867)=8.799ǫand M∆(ρmin=0.668)=10.238ǫfor spherical ansatz.The baryon ground states are now swelled oblate solutions.Again,one
