Today’s advertisements , or ads, try to get consumers(消费者) to buy certain brands(品牌) . Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can. sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal(麦片) , or see a movie. Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.For example, you probab1y do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There areprobably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on a shelf for another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extra-tasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it.Advertising must get attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling. One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.60. What is discussed in this passage?A. The content of modern advertising.B. The skills of modern advertising.C. The results of modern advertising.D. The writing of modern advertising.61. What can we infer from the passage?A. Customers can easily be persuaded by advertisements.B. Customers should be persuaded by advertisements.C. It’s impossible for cus tomers to buy a product without advertisements.D. Customers buy products according to their demands rather than the advertisements.CLucky is the man who has no “ skeleton(骷髅) in his closet.” When a man has done something in his life that he is ashamed of and that he wants to hide, he is said to have a “ skeleton in his closet.” Some people may have more than one skeleton. As we have noted many times, it is hard to find out how these expression begin. Sometimes, we get some hard facts. But more often we have to depend on guesswork. And that is true of this phrase, which came from England. Before 1832, English law did not permit a doctor to cut open a dead human body for scientific examination, unless it was the corpse (尸体) of an executed (处决) criminal. But when it became legal, more and more doctors demanded skeletons for a more scientific study of medicine. It was helpful in the advance of modern medicine. The demand had become so strong that men began to rob tombs and sell skeletons to doctors at high prices. We are told that a doctor would usually buy just one skeleton for scientific study. It became very important in his work. But he had to keep it hidden because most people objected to keeping such a thing. As a rule, the doctor would keep his skeleton in some dark corner where it could not be seen, or hide it in a closet. After a time, people began to suspect every doctor of hiding a skeleton in the closet. From this suspicion, the phrase “ a skeleton in the closet” took on a broader, more general meaning. To describe anything that a man wanted to keep others from discovering. It could be proof of a criminal act, or something much less serious. Well, there is one more theory. One writer, however, believes that the phrase might have come from something that really happened. It is his guess that a hidden closet in some old English country home may have turned up a real skeleton, clear proof of some old family shame or crime. Well, one man’s guess is as good as another. But this sounds like a story by the great French novelist, Balzac.Balzac tells us of a man who suspected his wife of having a lover. The husband comes home by surprise. But she hears him and quickly hides her lover in the closet of her bedroom. He enters her room and asks her if she is hiding her lover. He says he will not open the door to the closet if she promises him there is no one there. He will believe her. She answers firmly that she is not hiding anyone in the closet. The husband then begins to build a solid brick wall against the closet. His wife watches, knowing that her lover will never come out alive. If she doesn’t admit her guilt, her lover will become a skeleton in the closet in years.64.Which of the following situations is suit able for using the phrase “ Skeleton in the closet”?A. You have stolen something precious and don’t want it discovered.B. You are a doctor and have to keep a skeleton for research.C. If you have cut open a dead human body for scientific examination you should keep theskeleton a secret.D. You have done a crime or done something foolish, but you want to keep others from discovering it.65. From the text we know there are _____ theories about how the phrase “ Skeleton in the closet”came into being.A. oneB. twoC. threeD. four66. Which of the following is right according to the text?A. The thieves stole skeletons from tombs in order to help the doctors.D. It is legal that corpses of anybody are cut open for scientific examination in history.DAncient people made clay pottery(陶器) because they needed it for their survival. They used the pots they make for cooking, storing food, and carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to early cultures that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of decoration, materials, glazes, and manufacture, the more advanced the culture itself. The artisan who makes pottery in North America today utilizes his or her skill and imagination to create items that are beautiful as well as functional, transforming something ordinary into something special and unique. The potter uses one of the Earth's most basic materials, clay. Clay can be found almost anywhere. Good pottery clay must be free from all small stones and other hard materials that would make the potting process difficult. Most North American artisan potters now purchase commercially processed clay, but some find the clay they need right in the earth, close to where they work. The most important tools potters use are their own hands; however, they also use wire loop tools, wooden modeling tools, plain wire, and sponges. Plain wire is used to cut away the finished potfrom its vase on the potter's wheel. After a finished pot is dried of all its moisture in the open air, it placed in a kiln and fired. The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed and fired again. For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later burn off in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the clay surface, making any kind of decorative pattern that they want.67. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. Different kinds of clay.B. The training of an artisan.C. The making of pottery.D. Crafts of ancient civilizations.68. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a way that ancient people used pottery?A. To hold food.B. To wash clothes.C. To cook.D. To transport objects.69. According to the author, what do potters use to remove the pot from the wheel?A. Melted wax.B. A wire loop.C. A sponge.D. The research comes from poor to middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.Robert Black from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland is the lead writer of the research. He says more than 3.5 million mothers and children under 5 die in poor countries each year because of hunger. He says more than two million children die from underdevelopment, either before or after birth. Millions of others who survive face a lifetime of disabilities or early death and the effects are not just physical. Poor mental development also results from hunger as children grow. Then the cycle of poverty and hunger often continues for their children.Doctor Black says hungry children are also more likely to have conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease as adults. He says the studies show that food programs need to place the greatest importance on the first two years of life. Hungry children can suffer their whole life damage from age two.It is high time their diets were improved. Diets should include foods rich in vitamin A and other useful vitamins and minerals. The researchers say early help such as this could reduce child deaths by 25%.This research has also faced some criticism. A medical aid group says the researchers underestimate(低估) the number of child deaths due to hunger. The researchers say there are最近,你们班级展开一场讨论,主题是当得知朋友染上了恶习,如抽烟,喝酒,撒谎,考试作弊,逃课或整夜上网,是否告知他的家长或老师。

Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. I you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water. If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.41. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?A. They are often forgotten by their owners.B. They are used to living outdoors.C. They build their won shelter.D. They like to stay in warm places.42. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?A. To know when to bring them inside.B. To keep them from eating bad food.C. To help them find shelters.D. To keep them company.43. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ___.A. run short of clean waterB. dig deep holes for funC. dirty the snow nearbyD. get lost in the wild44. What is the purpose of this text?A. To solve a problem.B. To give practical advice.C. To tell an interesting story.D. To present a research result.(B) You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.Let’s start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle (角度) to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough t o catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (摆动). It shouldn’t look like on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.45. What should you consider first while sailing?A. Sailors’ strength.B. Wave levels.C. Wind directions.D. Size of sails.46. What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. The boat.B. The wind.C. The sail.D. The angle.47. What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?A. Move in a straight line.B. Allow the sail to flap.C. Lower the sail.D. Tack the boat.48. Where can you probably find the text?A. In a popular magazine.B. In a tourist guidebook.C. In a physics textbook.D. In an official report.(C)Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile. Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly. It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.49. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?A. Love.B. Politeness.C. Joy.D. Thankfulness.50. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can ___ .A. show friendliness to strangersB. be used to hide true feelingsC. be used in the wrong placesD. show personal habits51. What should we do before attempting to “read” people?A. Learn about their relations with others.B. Understand their cultural backgrounds.C. Find out about their past experience.D. Figure out what they will do next.52. What would be the best title for the test?A. Cultural DifferencesB. Smiles and RelationshipC. Facial ExpressivenessD. Habits and Emotions(D) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – One of the world’s most famous fossils (化石) – the 3.2 million-year-old Lucy skeleton (骨骼) unearthed in Ethiopia in 1974 – will go on an exhibition tour abroad for the first time in the United States, officials said Tuesday.Even the Ethiopian public has only seen Lucy twice. The Lucy on exhibition at the Ethiopian National Museum in the capital, Addis Ababa, is a replica while the real remains are usually locked in a secret storeroom. A team from the Museum of National Science in Houston, Texas, spent four years discussing with the Ethiopians for the U.S. tour, which will start in Houston next September.“Ethiopia’s rich culture of both the past and today, is one of the best kept secrets in the world,” said Joel Bartsch, director of the Houston museum. The six-year tour will also go to Washington, New York, Denver and Chicago. Officials said six other U.S. cities may be on the tour. But they said plans had not been worked out.Travelling with Lucy will be 190 other fossils.Lucy, her name taken from a Beatles song that played in a camp the night of her discovery, ispart of the skeleton of what was once a 312-foot-tall ape-man (猿人). 53. The author writes this text mainly to ___ .A. introduce a few U.S. museumsB. describe some research workC. discuss the value of an ape-manD. report a coming event54. What does the words “a replica” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. A painting of the skeleton.B. A photograph of LucyC. A copy of the skeleton.D. A written record of Lucy.55. How many cities has Lucy’s U.S. tour plan already included?A. Four.B. Five.C. Six.D. Eleven.56. What was the skeleton named after? A. An ape-man. B. A song. C. A singer. D. A camp.(E) Make Up Your Mind to SucceedKind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s winter.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent (才能) is genetic –you’r e a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties. On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience. We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.57. What does the author think about the present generation?A. The y don’t do well at school.B. They are often misunderstood.C. They are eager to win in sports.D. They are given too much praise.58. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ___ .A. doesn’t want to work hardB. cares a lot about personal safetyC. cannot share his ideas with othersD. can succeed with the help of teachers59. What does the growth mind-set believe?A. Admitting failure is shameful.B. Talent comes with one’s birth.C. Scores should be highly valued.D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.60. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?A. Encourage them to learn from failures.B. Prevent them from making mistakes.C. Guide them in doing little things.D. Help them grow with praise.第二节根据对话内容…………….选项中有两项为多余选项。

D.part of a brochure.BThere’s no need to say it ,but there are really more than a few b enefits to educational tours .From the word itself ,an educationa l tour is something bone to gain knowledge while traveling and t ouring to some place .It creates opportunities for people to think out of the box and see things and places that aren’t usually see n in their normal environment..Educational trips aren’t always those that cover far distances .A s already said ,it is done to gain knowledge and you wouldn’t ne ed to go very far to have it .Sometimes , an educational trip coul d be in your hometown .Historic places and museums are always on top of the lists of the places to go in an educational tour .Educational tours like the se would make you know your country better .Your country’s hi story is rich and it is the reason why you came to be .But reme mber that the history of other states ,counties and countries are as important as your own .When you go on a trip to another country ,it is likely that you lea rn their culture first .Different cultures have different understandi ng and perspective of different acts ,and it could be dangerous or offending if you cannot understand a culture .When you go on an educational tour ,it is likely that you would h ave the opportunity to socialize with other people .Students are encouraged to talk to locals and natives and learn from them .b ecause it is with understanding that students gain knowledge . When students talk with local people ,they are gaining insights t o their life and their culture .It is said that when in Rome ,act an d think as the Romans do ,and this is a valuable skill that not all people could do .There are millions of people who want to travel ,and an educati onal tour is the perfect time to do so .Traveling opens new door s and opportunities ; it always makes you want to learn more .Cultures are many and widely different , and it is a very valuable t alent to understand the people of different cultures .Traveling with groups of other students is safer than traveling al one ,and bulk travels like those could also be helpful on the bud get .Group of friends could stay at one place and get discounts on the place that you wouldn’t get if you are traveling alone .Tra veling is fun and moue budget —friendly when with other people on an educational tour .Travel abroad for a month ,Try and see if you wouldn’t miss you r own country. Traveling would let you see your own country in a different way .The benefits of an educational tour are all impor tant, but this one creates patriotism in a person .A school isn’t a place where they teach you to find the answers ; it is a place where one teaches you to find the questions and l earn the answers for yourself .Educational tours are valuable thi s way . They teach you that you are not the only one seeking fo r questions and that there are other people who are willing to he lp you on your way too.61.What are educational tours according to the passage ?A.Something done to gain knowledge while traveling.B.Something done to know more about one’s own country whi le traveling .C.Something done to know more about a foreign country whil e traveling .D.Something done to seek for more friends while traveling. 62.What places are people most likely to go to in an education al tour?A.Schools and churches .B.Government buildings .C.Places of amusement.D.Historical places and museums .63.Which statement is correct according to the passage ?A.Educational trips always cover long distances.B.When on educational trips ,you seldom have the chance to t alk with other people.C.Educational trips are always too short to learn knowledge.D.Learning the culture first is a must before you go on educati onal trips.64.If you want to go on a cheap and safe educational trip ,you’d better .A.go with groups of other students B.avoid the top spotsC.book one in advanceD.learn the culture first65.What does the word “patriotism”in the eighth paragraph me an?A.同情B.爱国心C.羞耻心D.虚荣心CBecause the brain controls just abort everything , when somethi ng goes wrong with it, it’s often serious and can affect many diff erent parts of the body . They study the fossils and organic remains of pri mates that once lived . They also study the connections between humans and other primates that are still living. In 1971. Louis Leakey and his wife Mary Leakey discovered stone tools that pushed back the dates for early humans to 3.75 million years ago.Like physical anthropologists, cultural anthropologists study clu es abort human life in the distant past ;however , cultural anthro pologists also look at similar and different things among human communities today. Some cultural anthropologists work in the fi eld , living and working among people in societies that differ fro m their own , producing descriptions of the daily activities of me n ,women that tell the story of the society’s community life as a whole .Some of them working at research universities making e fforts to discover cross-cultural patterns .A cultural anthropologist who achieved worldwide fame was Ma rgaret Mead .
