Sonnet 18Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

When in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes I all alone beweep my outcast state,And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon my self and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Featured like him, like him with friends possessed, Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope, With what I most enjoy contented least,Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising, Haply I think on thee, and then my state, (Like to the lark at break of day arisingFrom sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven's gate. r thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings, That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate:狂风会使五月娇蕾红消香断,Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,夏天拥有的时日也转瞬即过;And summer's lease hath all too short a date:有时天空之巨眼目光太炽热,Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,它金灿灿的面色也常被遮暗;And often is his gold complexion dimmed,而千芳万艳都终将凋零飘落,And every fair from fair sometime declines,被时运天道之更替剥尽红颜;By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade,你所拥有的美貌也不会消失,Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,死神终难夸口你游荡于死荫,Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,当你在不朽的诗中永葆盛时;When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,只要有人类生存,或人有眼睛,So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,我的诗就会流传并赋予你生命。

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. This is one of the most famous of all the sonnets, justifiably so. But it would be a mistake to take it entirely in isolation, for it links in with so many of the other sonnets through the themes of the descriptive power of verse; the ability of the poet to depict the fair youth adequately, or not; and the immortality conveyed through being hymned in these 'eternal lines'. It is noticeable that here the poet is full of confidence that his verse will live as long as there are people drawing breath upon the earth, whereas later he apologises for his poor wit and his humble lines which are inadequate to encompass all the youth's excellence. Now, perhaps in the early days of his love, there is no such self-doubt and the eternal summer of the youth is preserved forever in the poet's lines. The poem also works at a rather curious level of achieving its objective through dispraise. The summer's day is found to be lacking in so many respects (too short, too hot, too rough, sometimes too dingy), but curiously enough one is left with the abiding impression that 'the lovely boy' is in fact like a summer's day at its best, fair, warm, sunny, temperate, one of the darling buds of May, and that all his beauty has been wonderfully highlighted by the comparison。

在第一句中,“Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?”

在第二句中,“Thou art more lovely and more temperate”被译为“你比夏天更可爱、更和缓”,这里的“art”是表示存在的动词,应该译为“是”,而不是“比”。

(Shall I compare thee to a summer's day)是所有十四行诗中最为著名和经典的一首。

Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate:Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:This sonnet by William Shakespeare is one of the most famous love poems of all time. In the poem, the poet compares the beauty of his beloved to that of a summer’s day, but concludes that she is even more beautiful and temperate. The poem speaks of the fleeting nature of summer, with its winds that shake the buds of May and its all-too-short lease. But more than just a love poem, this sonnet speaks to the essence of life itself. It reminds us that beauty is fleeting, that the things we cherish the most are often the most fragile. It encourages us to appreciate the beauty around us while we can, and to hold on to the things that are most dear to us.As we go through life, we encounter many fleeting moments of beauty. The first bloom of spring flowers, the sound of birds singing in the morning, the sight of a sunset over the ocean. These things are here for only a moment, and then they are gone. But in these fleeting moments, we find something that is truly eternal. We find the essence of life itself, the beauty that transcends time and space. We find the love that connects all beings, and the joy that comes from being alive. In the end, it is not the fleeting beauty of nature that we should seek to hold on to, but rather the eternal beauty of our own hearts. For it is here that we find the love and joy that make life worth living, and the courage to face whatever challenges life may bring.。

The first 126 sonnets are apparently addressed to a handsome young man, maybe his patron. The poems express the writer's selfless but not entirely uncritical devotion to the young man.The other 28 sonnets are about a young woman characterized as a " dark lady" ,whom the poet distrust but cannot resist. The poems addressed directly to her are perhapsthe most remarkable in the sequence because their unsentimental tone is unlike that of traditional love sonnets. The form of the poems is the English Variation of the traditional Italian,or Petrarchan, sonnet. Shakespeare's sonnets have three quatrains,or groups of four lines and a final couplet. Their rhyme scheme is abab, cdcd, efef,gg. the sonnet18 is that. There is a clear demarcation between the octave and the sestet. The last two lines form a powerful ending of the whole poem. The theme of sonet18 is that a profound meditation on the destructive power of time and the eternal beauty brought forth by poetry to the one he loves. This poem used two imageries that is a summer''s day-youth and the eye of heaven-the sun. In the sonnet18 , Shakespeare extol his young friend , images him as a summer's day-youth, because the summer of England is the most comfortable, warm but not too hot. Summer is good, but it is far less than the friend’s youth and beauty. The poet believed that his poems will exist with time. Therefore, his friend will charm in his poems. This poem reflected the people Renaissance pursuit good things and the thought of humanism reflected quite well in this poem.。

Who are you?(我是无名之辈!

叶芝的中的“When you are old and grey and full ofsleep(当你老了,头发花白,睡意沉沉)”,这画面感一下就出来了。

What Shall I Compare Thee to?——A Comparison Between Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 mainly on FigurativeLanguageR eading the single line “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” gives me a feeling that a breeze is caressing my cheeks. The line itself seems to be lovely and temperate. Sonnet 18 is definitely a thing of beauty. But where does its beauty come from? The guide reading given by our teacher enlarges the world of Sonnet 18 considerably. It is those magic crafts used by the poet that increase the beauty. Among those techniques, the figures of speech fascinate me most, so I choose to make a comparison between Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130, which is also rich in rhetorical devices.First of all, I’ll give a brief outline of the two poems. We know from our teacher that Sonnet 18-126 mainly talk about the Fair Youth while Sonnet 127-152 focus on the Dark Lady.In Sonnet 18, the poet explains the reason why he cannot compare “you” to a summer’s day and why “you” will never lose the beauty that “you” possess. The poet tells us that “you” will li ve forever in his eternal lines. And he has made it. In Sonnet 130, the poet tells the readers that although his mistress does not possess those characterist ics held by those “false compare” as the sun, the coral and the like, she is as rare as those women belied with false comparison in some untruthful poems. Both Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 are about the reason why the author cannot compare the beauty in his heart to something else, but the reasons and points of view are different. Although as time goes by, the symbol of beauty in the poet’s heart has changed, the beauty itself is a joy for ever.“What Shall I Compare Thee to?” William Shakespeare might have been puzzled. Because we know that he cannot compare the beauty in his heart to a summer’s day in Sonnet 18 or anything connected with “false comparison” in Sonnet 130. But for the most part, I think it is not a problem for him at all. He takes comparison as a way to express his ideas. And those images in his poems actually serve as a foil to “you” and his mistress. What are the other ways used by him then? The next step, I will make a comparison between Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 on figurative language. Similarities:1) SimileSimile is the most obvious figurative language used in these two sonnets.Sonnet 18: “compare”Sonnet 130: “like”2) MetaphorSonnet 18: “lease” indicates the length of summer.Sonnet 130: “snow” and “wires” refers to the poet’s mistress’ breasts and hairs.3) AlliterationSonnet 18: “Fair from fair”, fair-fairSonnet 130: “My mistress”“White, why”“I grant I never saw a Goddess go.” Grant-Goddess-go4) InversionSonnet 18: “And summer’s lease hath all too short a date”,“And often is his gold complexion dimmed.”Sonnet 130: “But no such rose s see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight.”5) HyperboleHyperbole is used in Sonnet 18 to emphasize the idea that “you” will live forever in lines. Hyperbole is also served as an outlet of emotion. We all know, in reality, as a hu man being, “thy summer”(“your youth”) will not be eternal and “you” will die, too. However, thanks to hyperbole the theme of the poet is revealed, that’s why this kind of figurative language is welcomed. And in Sonnet 130, verses like “Coral is far mor e red than her lips’ red” and “Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks” apply hyperbole. This kind of hyperbole helps to create a strong sense of sarcasm because the couplet: “And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare as any she belied with false compare” reveals the fact that the above lines are in an ironic tone.As Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 300 both belong to Shakespearean sonnets, they also share some similarities in rhyme, rhythm and structure. For instance, both of the two poems are sonnets composed of three quatrains and one rhyming couplet. And they are iambic pentameter and have the same rhyme scheme: a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g. And that explains why reading Shakespearean sonnets gives me a feeling of reading “Say Goodbye to Cambridge Again” written by Xu Zhimo.Differences:There are also some figures of speech not shared by both.Sonnet 18Rhetorical question: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” The poet answers the question in the following lines. (T he line in Sonnet 130 “If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun” is not a rhetorical question. The word “Why” is just an interjection.)Personification: “his gold complexion”, “the eye of heaven” and “darling buds”. Pun: “fair” means beauty both as a person and as an abstract c oncept. The word “summer” refers to beauty and youth.Synecdoche: “lines” represents the whole poem.Sonnet 130Irony:The exaggerated comparison listed in the sonnet is strongly rejected by William Shakespeare. By searching the internet, I know Sonnet 130 was written as a parody of a Petrarchan sonnet. William Shakespeare makes fun of the false comparison in traditional Petrarchan sonnet. And his mistress seems more real compared to those “Goddess-like” women in Petrarchan sonnets.Through the use of exaggeration as mentioned above, a sense of irony has been created. The poet’s mistress is not weak in every aspect; on the contrary, she is just not perfect. And because she is not perfect, the poet loves her. She is real, tangible, not as distant as a Go ddess, and that’s exactly why the poet favors her and for what the poet compliments her for.William Shakespeare is a wise poet. In Sonnet 130, he takes irony as a way of expressing his own feeling. The poet is as authentic as his mistress because he understands the truth essence of poetry: a natural revelation of the poet’s true feelings. Likewise, in my point of view, since we can compare lip to cherry, why not coral? There is also a Chinese saying: “She is lovely enough to make fish sink and geese settle and her beauty would make the moon’s complexion dimmed and put the flowers to shame.” And it is commonly used too. Not natural? Should be blamed of? It depends. I think even if all people except the poet think the poe t’s lover is extremely ugly, nevertheless, he himself thinks she is a beauty, he still has the right to compare her to a Goddess. But if a poet compares his lover to a Goddess not because he feels so, but for being influenced by others, this comparison has turned to be a clichéindeed. In conclusion, my essay focuses on the comparison of Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 mainly on the rhetorical devices. I give a brief introduction of the two poems in the first part and then make a comparison (similarities and differences) between the two on figurative language in the second part. I also add something about the rhyme, rhythm and structure of the two sonnets into the similarities part. There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Although different people may hold different points of view towards the same poem, to learn something about the crafts or techniques used by poets is beneficial and full of interests. And it is also funny to think about the question: “What shall I compare thee to?”。
