长难句分析的步骤举例:经典例题(2001年考研完型填空第二段)In a significant tightening of legal controls over the press, Lord Irvine, the Lord Chancellor, will introduce a draft bill that will propose making payments to witnesses illegal and will strictly control the amount of publicity that can be given to a case before a trial begins.分析:第一,划出定语从句和状语从句: that will propose making payments to witnesses illegal and will strictly control the amount of publicity /that can be given to a case /before a trial begins. In a significant tightening of legal controls over the press第三,句子的结构分析:(1)主干结构是主语(Lord Irvine含同位语the Lord Chancellor)+将来时谓语(will introduce)+宾语(a draft bill);(2)that引导的定语从句修饰draft bill,其中,will propose 是第一个谓语,making payments to witnesses illegal是一个动名词短语做宾语,在动名词短语内部,payments to witnesses做making的宾语,illegal是宾补;第二个谓语是will strictly control, the amount of publicity是它的宾语。

分解】句子的主干为:“We are … removed from … reviews (句子主干部分)… at a time (时间状语)… ”。
之后,“at a time”与“between”之间相互解释,“time”之后的“when”引导修饰其的时间定语从句。
【分解】句子的主干为:“So few … have …(主句主干部分)… that (引导结果状语从句)I am tempted to (从句部分的主谓)… ”。
主句中,“to keep … journalism”不定式修饰“brains or gift”部分。
最后,“of contempt”修饰“a term”,“applied …(to)…”也修饰“a term”。

At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths,a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.(1990.1)(在早期的尝试中,电缆铺设失败了。
时间状语从句由when引导,而主句是it was found to be covered in living growths和afact。
而a fact之后又由which引导了一个定语从句,用来修饰a fact。
在阅读的时候可以先取掉这个句子中的所有修饰成分,于是在这个从句套从句的长难句中,句子的主干实际上就是the cable failed and it was found to be covered in living growths, and a fact。
Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decadesto track the ships of potential enemies.(2002.6)(追踪蓝鲸只不过是冷战后那个刚刚对民间科学家开放的令人振奋的世界的一角,因为美国海军为追踪潜在敌舰而在数十年里建立的全球水下监听系统开始与人分享并做了部分解密与公开。
在取掉所有修饰成分后,不难看出句子的主干为tracking whalesis one example as the navy starts to share and uncover its global network of underwater listening system.2)插入语式在四级阅读中,经常会碰到一些用逗号或破折号分开的句子,而这些两个逗号或破折号之间的内容通常被称为插入语。
Man,however much he may like to pretend the contray,is part of nature.(1995.1)(人类是自然的一部分,尽管他可能表现的不属于自然)在这个句子中两个逗号之间的however much he may like to pretend the contray是插入语,而它的主句实际上是man is part of nature。
Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wearthem.(2000.6)( 对制服的主要争议是他们缺乏多样性,致使必须穿它的人丧失了个性)在这个句中,primary一词本来的位置应在the arguments 之前,但作者为了强调“主要”这一概念,就将它提前到了句首。
Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signedlanguages are unique—a speech of the hand.(2004.6)(在近20年里,语言研究方面的专家才意识到手语的独特,它是一种手的语言。
例如这里的only和四级阅读中经常涉及的not only…but also, hardly…when, no sooner…than等。
There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal-combustion engine has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons being driven.(1998.6)(毫无疑问,我们希望学生学习一些有关计算机工作原理的知识,正如我们希望他们明白内燃机跟燃料燃烧、气体膨胀和活塞被推动有关一样。
As for ANWR’s impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point outthat oil is responsible for only 1% of the Golden State’s electricityoutput---and just 3% of the nation’s.(2005.6)在这个句子中,应当注意到Golden State这个词。
