Hearing that, Fortunato insisted on going to identify the authenticity of the wine. Montresor pretended that he failed to refuse fortunato. Then he brought Fortunato to his vaults. When they arrived the most remote end of the crypt, he fettered Fortunato to to iron staples he had prepared in advance and then he began to wall up the entrance of the niche. And when Fortunato finally realized what was happening, it was too late. He had to be left there, buried alive.As he has always insisted, Edgar Ellan Poe here in this story adopted a short and fast-paced narrative style as to make the story rapidly develop to the climax. So to make the plot compact, Poe cut off the background information. The setting of the story is simple and vague, and to some extent, it’s a suspense. So in such a compact and short story, to make it appealing and ample, Poe uses a lot of literary device, such as symlolism, foreshadowing and irony.The use of symbolism is a distinctive feature in this story. The most distinctive symbol in this writing,in my opinion, is Amentillado. It’s the title of the story, and the cause of all the story following it’s appearance. Montresor set a trap with Amontillado. He used it to lure Fortunato. And to Fortunato, Amontillado was a lure. But when Montresor successfully tempted Fortunato with Amontillado, then it became a symbol of death to Fortunato. So Amontillado in this story is a symbol of lure and death to Fortunato.Another important symbol is the bells worn on Fortunato. Poe gave a detailed description on Fortunato’s dressing when he first appeared: The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. And considering Poe’s style of simplicity, this is definitely not unnecessary. Here is where the author first mentioned the bells. As the story developes to where Montresor and Fortunato came to the catacombs, “The gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode”, and here the bells jingled. This is a sign and warning of death when they first stepped in the catacombs. “He raised if to his lips with a leer. He paused and nodded to me familiarly, while his bells jingled”, here it apppeared again when they came to the catacombs where the Montresors’ancestors were burid, and Montresor suggested that tey have a draught of Medocto defend them from the damps, and Fortunato even toasted to the buried that repose around them,unawaring that hewould soon join them. Here the arms and motto just foreshadow that Montresor is just like a serpant rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel and he is going to kill Fortunato. The jingling of bells is a signal of danger, to warn that Fortunato is more close to death, but the proud Fortunato still didn’t sense it. “There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells”—Fortunato finally died and left only the bells jingling. So the jingling of the bells symbolizes that Fortunato was walking towards death. Other symbols like the increasing of the nitre, the catacombs, the flambeaux’s glowing than flame, and the tier of the mansonry, etc. They all indicates that the hope of Fortunto’s survival became smaller and smaller. What’s more, he and his friends are brave enough to make a mischief as a retribution on theschoolmaster, who always lashes pupils just in order to make a good showing on “Examination” day. All these things show Tom’s challenge to the unreasonable school education even the whole society. By the attitudes and acts of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain aims to criticize the education at that time which tried to preach but of no practical use at all. Twain criticizes the adult attitudes and behaviors throughout the novel. That is part of the conflict: the maturation of a youth into adulthood conflicting with the disapproval of the adult behaviors that exist. It is this double vision of humor and satire that raises the novel above the level of a boy's adventure story.2.The Language Characteristic of Applying Slang and Absorbing ExpressionsAccording to the dictionary, slang is defined as a casual type of language that is playful or trendy. Then about the reaction of the poodle dog, Mark Twain has used many absorbing expressions, which is typically child language: “ The poodle dog spied the beetle; the drooping tail liftedand wagged. That was why Ernest Hemingway once said “all modern American literatures came from one book written by Mark Twain called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” And it became Twain‟s masterpiece. Mark Twain‟s three years‟ life on that returned to the Mississippi left such a fond memory with him that returned to the theme more than once in his writing career. Huckleberry Finn is a v eritable recreation of living models, and is Huck‟s book, not Jim‟s. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain shows satire on southern culture before the civil war, when the Mississippi valley was still being settled. Twain blended two different subjects, the experience of westward expansion and the experience of southern slavery. And he wrote about both regains of the country. His attitudes toward the south were much less pleasant than his attitudes toward the west, because he confronted the south problem of slave of mistreatment of humans by humans. Through the change of the white boy Huck‟s attitude toward Jim, a runaway black slave, Twain condemned racial discrimination. He used vernacular language, dialect with spelling representing pronunciation. Part of this comes from his interest in humor. The directness of the language is a very influential point in Twain‟s style. Ernest Hemingway in the 20th century said that h e had learnt his craft from Mark Twain because if the direct speech and the direct narration that Twain was able to achieve. The hoax and tall tale are also part of twain‟s style. Hoax is writing something fantastic and pretending that it were true, much like the tall tale. It tolls as if it were true, and so the reader would laugh that any body could believe such preposterous things, the burlesque making fun of establishes ways of writing. Mark Twain said, “I amend dialect stuff by talking and talking i t till it sounds right.” He wanted his writing to have the sound of easy-going speech. In Huckleberry Finn the fountainhead of the American colloquial prose, he wrote seven different dialects and each can be distinguished. If the reader is a linguist, he can examine the different pronunciations that Twain has shown. In his own time, dialect writing was considered humorous. People got a big laugh out of reading these misspell words. Another feature of the book, which helps to make it famous is its language. The book is written in the colloquial style in the general standard speech of uneducated Americans.. Mark Twain‟s introductory note on accents is an indication of his conscious attempt to achieve accurate detail. “In this book,” he says, “a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri Negro dialect; the extreme forms of the backwoods southwestern dialect; the ordinary …pike country‟ dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a haphazard fashion, or by guesswork; but painstakingly, and with the trustworthy guidance andsupport of personal familiarity, with these several forms of speech.” “Painstaking ” and “not haphazard,” though they possess a humorous ring, denote the conscientious effort on the part of the au thor, and trustworthiness and familiarity and the author‟s awareness of dialects in using which reveal his attempt to reproduce actual daily speech with a degree of accuracy. A recent and very influential recasting of Huck‟s vernacular voice has identified. We may quote a passage from this masterpiece as an illustration:“I took the sack of corn meal and took it to where the canoe was hid, and shoved the vines and branches apart and put it in; then I done the same with the side of bacon; then the whisky-jug. I took all the coffee and sugar there was, and all the ammunition;I took the wadding; I took the bucket and gourd; took a dipper and a tin cup, and my old son and two blankets, and the skillet and the coffee-pot/ I took fish lines and matches and other things- everything that was worth a cent. I cleaned out the place I wanted an ax, but there wasn‟t any, only the one out at woodpile, and I know why I was going to leave that. I fetched out the gun, and now I was done.”The words used here are, p erhaps “ammunition” which is etymologically French, mostly Anglo-Saxon in origin, and are short, concrete and direct in effect. Sentence structures are most of them simple or compound, with a series of “then” and “ands” and semi-colons serving as connectiv es. The repetition of the word “took” and the stringing together of things leave the impression that Mark Twain depend solely on the concrete object and action for the body and movement of his prose. What is more, there is an ungrammatical element, which gives the final finish to his style.
