AI used to think of myself as a fairly open person, but my bookshelves told a different story. Apart from a few Indian novels and the Australian and South African book, my literature collection consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I hardly ever read anything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors. So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing. As I was unlikely to find publications from nearly 200 nations on the shelves of my local bookshop, I decided to ask the planet’s readers for help. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World and put out an appeal for suggestions of titles that I could read in English. The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the planet were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries. Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works otherwise unavailable to the 62% of the British who only speak English. Even so, selecting books was no easy task. With translations making up only around 4.5 percent of literary works published in the UK and Ireland, getting English versions (版本)of stories was difficult. But the effort was worth it. I found I was visiting the mental space of the storytellers. These stories not only opened my mind to the real life in other places, but opened my heart to the way people there might feel. And that in turn changed my thinking. Through reading the stories shared with me by bookish strangers around the globe, I realised I was not alone, but part of a network that spread all over the planet.1. Which of the following might be found on the blog A Year of Reading the World?A. Lists of English version books.B. Research on English literature.C. Unfinished novels by British writers.D. Comments on English literature.2. Why was it hard for the author to select the right books to read?A. The author had a busy schedule.B. The author was only interested in a few topics.C. The author could only read books written in English.D. Most books recommended are not available in local bookshops.3. The author is probably from_________.A. AmericaB. the UKC. AustraliaD. Canada4. Which of the following words can best describe the author’s experience?A. fast and effortlessB. challenging but rewardingC. hopeless but beneficialD. meaningful but fruitlessBMy oldest child, Emma, just returned to campus after a long holiday break to finish up her last period of college. These days, friends and family have begun flooding me with one question: What is she going to do after graduation? The job market is, after all, awfully tough. Just this month the Federal Reserve Bank published a study showing that “recent graduates are increasingly working in low-paid jobs or working part-time.〞 The bright spot, according to the study, is for students who majored(主修) in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics —areas in which recent graduates “have tended to do relatively well〞.But Emma is a student of the humanities(人文) at a small college. She’s an American Studies major with a focus on the politics and culture of food. For quite a while, I think her field of study is so fashionable right now that I’m not the least bit worried s he will find a good job. Yet the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve decided to be honest. “I’m not sure what Emma is going to do,〞I now say. “But she’s gotten a great education and has really found her interest. —and I know those things will serve her well over the course of her life.〞Nowadays, more and more universities and colleges are being measured by the salaries of their recent graduates. In this climate, encouraging your kid to study the humanities, seems, at best, unwise or, at worst, unconcerned with earning a living. But a college is not a vocational(职业) school. And promoting STEM subjects should not be society’s only answer to helping the next generation grow in a competitive world. From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contribution to the world and how happy she is in it.5. The author’s friends and family_________.A. are worried about Emma’s safetyB. have been worrying about the floodC. are concerned about Emma’s futureD. are worried about the job market6. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. The number of the graduates is increasing.B. STEM graduates can be better employees.C. STEM graduates are in relatively greater demand.D. More and more graduates like to do a part-time job.7. Why did Emma choose a major in the humanities?A. Because she is interested in it.B. Because her mother told her to.C. Because it is increasingly popular.D. Because she wants further education.8. According to the author, what matters most in choosing a major is that_________.A. it should be among the STEMB. it should be fashionable and interestingC. it should allow a good job and a high salaryD. it should bring achievements and happinessCRecently a study, led by Pedro Hallal of the FederalUniversity, suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have helped to create a world in which taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently have enough good data been collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia, Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.Malta wins the race for most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are a ctive enough according to Dr Hallal’s study, compared with fewer than four in ten British. These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved(进化) to benefit from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days has nearly the same effect on life span(寿命) as smoking.9. We may learn from Paragraph 1 that_________.A. the decline of exercise rates is newly discoveredB. the study suggests 31% of female adults get too little exerciseC. the good enough data has been collected from only one countryD. the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degree10. According to the study, women of Luxembourg_________.A. have little time to exerciseB. hate to get regular exerciseC. take more exercise to lose weightD. exercise more than men in their country11. The underlined word “slothfu l〞 in Paragraph 3 most probably means_________.A. powerfulB. richC. lazyD. unpopular12. What can be the best title for the text?A. Worldwide Lack of Enough ExerciseB. New Health DiscoveryC. Evolvement of Human BeingsD. Benefits of Taking ExerciseDWelcome to Arundel Castle which issituated in West Sussex, England. Some effective ways to keep healthy.BThe boys crowded in two teams at the front of Charlene Skinner ’s class as they thought over the math problem that flashed on t he whiteboard. “That’s not right,” one boy said. “It says find the slope,” another boy said, instructing his classmates. Next door, in Room A114, the girls spent five minutes in Justin Anderson’s science class writing down everything they know about DNA. W hen the assigned time was up, asked the students to share some of what they noted down. “Nobody’s DNA is alike,” one girl s aid after raising her hand. “You get it from your parents,” said a nother. This is how some lessons are taught at James Gholson Mid dle School in ’s County: boys in one classroom, girls in another. Advocates argue that separating boys and girls removes distra ctions (分心) and sex prejudice in the classroom, taking the lead from exp ensive private schools and boarding schools that have relied on single-sex learning for generations. But opponents say there is little ev idence that such separation works, that it can be discriminatory (歧视) and that it doesn’t properly prepare students for a world that is mixed. Some experts say single-sex classes can break down sex stereotypes (定式), create opportunities for students and improve test scores. Kathy Couture, an education professor at Stetson University in and a board member of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education, said students tend to be more focused on thei r curriculum and less concerned about impressing or getting att ention from the opposite sex. She said girls tend to “dumb themselves down for boys” when they are together in math and scie nce classes. But a report published last week by the Psychological Bulletin — which reviewed 184 studies to compare the outcomes of lear ning in single-sex and mixed classrooms — raised questions about whether t here are any real advantages to single-sex classrooms.Janet Hyde, one of the report’s co-authors, said there was no evidence to support the argument th at boys do better orally or that girls improve in math and scienc e when in single-sex settings. What is more important is that separating students might not adequately prepare them for college and careers. “O ne of the major purposes of school is to prepare students for th e adult world, and that world is mixed,” Janet Hyde said. “I think we do harm to students by not preparing them for the adult wor ld.”61. What purpose does the first paragraph serve?A. To show how boys and girls are taught separately.B. To show how the students behave in class.C. To show how the two lessons are different.D. To show how the class activities are organized.62. Why does teach students separately?A. Because single-sex classes are popular in .B. Because students may be more concentrated in single-sex classes.C. Because girls tend to look down upon boys in mixed classe s.D. Because it is a private and expensive school.63. According to Kathy Couture, what is the disadvantage of a mixed class?A. Students are not interested in their curriculums.B. Students may be disturbed by the opposite sex in their stu dy.C. Girls are often absent from math and science classes.D. Students have fewer chances to have tests.64. What is the point of Janet Hyde’s statement on single-sex classes?A. Single-sex classes do not improve boys’ speaking ability.B. Single-sex classes lead to worse academic performance.C. Single-sex classes harm the students in their future study and work.D. Single-sex classes do not help students’ physical development in their childhood .65. What’s the main idea of this passage?A. Single-sex classes have the edge over mixed classes.B. In single-sex classes boys can learn languages better.C. Mixed classes have the obvious advantage over single-sex classesD. Effects of separated education remains to be assessed furt herCEnergy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it? If you t hink so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has b een the dream of American president for decades, and never m ore so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil pric e shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great rec ession.“Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concept s that are rarely though through. What is it we want independen ce from, exactly? Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that o ld from elsewhere. The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)of biofuel(生物燃料)available, and more may become available, but most biofuels c ause economic waste and environmental destruction. Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast ar eas of the are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environm ental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy productio n in order to cut back imports?Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficien cy, and when we buy things from places that have lower produc tion costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the is also a large exporter of oil products, sell ing about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to abo ut 90 countries. There is no question that the imports a great deal of energy an d, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. Wh en that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies andhigher prices, At the same time, we derive massive economic b enefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world m arket and when we engage in energy trade around the world.66. What does the author say about energy independence for ?A.It sounds very attractive. C.It will bring oil prices down.B.It ensures national security. D.It has long been everyone’s dr eam.67. What does the author think of biofuels?A.They keep ’s economy running healthily.B.They prove to be a good alternative to petroleum.C.They do not provide a sustainable energy supply.D.They cause serious damage to the environment.68. Why does rely heavily on oil imports?A.It wants to expand its storage of crude oil.B.Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.C.It wants to keep its own environment complete.D. Its own oil production falls short of demand.69. What does the author say about oil trade?A. It proves profitable to both sides.B.It improves economic efficiency.C. It makes for economic prosperity.D.It saves the cost of oil exploration.70. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To stress the importance of energy conservation.B.To excite Americans’ awareness of the energy crisis.C.To defend ’s dependence on oil imports.D.To explain the increase of international oil trade.Part IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered bla nks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. Many weight loss programs seem attractive to people who are j ust trying to lose weight. However, for most people who are ove rweight, the results are so minimal (微小的) that they will give up long before achieving any realistic resu lts. It usually turns out that the programs are practically useless. You lose weight for a while, only to gain back more weight whe n you stop your weight loss program. This is because such prog rams are not natural, and that's why the "failure rate" is over 98 %. Isn't there a natural weight loss solution? Well, the only wayto lose weight naturally is the good old-fashioned way, which includes proper diet and frequent exercis e.Often, we eat far more than we'd actually need simply because we've been trained to clean our plates. By reducing portion size s, we can lose weight without changing the foods we eat. Try us ing a smaller plate, which will make portions look larger. When dining out, ask for a to-go (外卖) box before you start eating, and pack away half of your mea l for later. You can lose weight naturally by making sensible substitutions i n your cooking and meal choices. For example, try substituting l ow-fat salad dressings(调味品); many taste just as good, if not better, as their hi-calorie cousins. When cooking, use fat-free cooking spray on your pans instead of butter or fat. You ca n easily preserve flavor while enjoying natural weight loss.A sure way of achieving natural weight loss is to increase the amount of exercise you get every day. However, this doesn't n ecessarily mean spending hours at the gym or in front of a weig ht loss video. Increase your exercise levels naturally by walking or biking short distances instead of driving, by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or by washing your car by hand insteadof running it through the automat. A“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy –they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.”–– Jeff Bezos I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent pe r year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titl es was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I w anted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probabl y wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told m e I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage invento r. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to f ollow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went t o my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling bo oks on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Par k, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for some one who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made so me sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it reall y was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret tryi ng and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted bya decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow m y passion, and I’m proud of that choice. We Are What We ChooseBTwo new studies suggest that modern running shoes could in crease the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a trea dmill machine (跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ra n barefoot (赤脚).Researchers from the JKM Technologies company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the of did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. T hey observed that the effect was even greater than the effectreported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The Am erican Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared r unners in the United States and . The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in .They divided the runners into three groups. One group had al ways run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running. Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found th at barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of the ir foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel.Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way m ost running shoes are designed may explain why those who w ear them land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger a nd heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem mor e likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to fe el if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kin d of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there ar e many problems in the way the press has reported in their pa per. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website.5. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Walking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot.B. And, like Truss – author of Eats, shoots & Leaves – I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make peo ple look stupid. Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tol erance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “d eserve to be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot a nd buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deser ve to be passed over for a job – even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companie s, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job ho pefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applicatio ns go into the bin.Of course, we write for a living. is the world’s larges t online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical do cumentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a str ong strike against grammar errors. But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is c onstantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimporta nt. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. An d, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the diff erence between “their”“there” and “they’re”.Good grammar makes good business sense – and not just wh en it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job des cription of most people in our office. Still, we give our gramma r test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operationsstaff, and our programmers.Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remem ber high school English. I’ve found that people who make few er mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes whe n they are doing something completely unrelated to writing – li ke stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with progr ammers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are lik ely to think lots of other things also aren’t important.12. The author agrees with Lynne Truss in that ________.A. grammar mistakes can’t be toleratedB. books on grammar make people stupidC. people need to learn basic grammarD. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable13. What’s the author’s“zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?A. They should be left out for a job.B. They have to correct their mistakes.C. They aren’t qualified for their jobs.D. They must be severely punished.14. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test.B. They are companies where one learns grammar.C. Grammar is quite important for their existence.D. They depend on grammar correction for a living.15. What can we learn from the text?A. Companies giving grammar tests may have no good bu siness sense.B. Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.C. A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might se em a little unfair.D. People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to ot her things.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIn 1992, I had just launched a new business called Video News International. It was the world's first video journalist network. The idea was to cover news and sell the service to news organizations. One day, a young intern (实习生) who was working for us named Anthony Lappe pulled me aside."There is something you have to see," he told me. "Comcast is doing this really cool thing.""What?""The Internet," he said. "It's going to be really big."Anthony later introduced me to the head of the Internet project."We are looking for content to put on our network here," the guy said to me.Well, I said I had lots of content to offer. The guy's eyes lit up. "Cool," he said. "We would like to put it on our network."Well, I was always looking for new clients."What are you going to pay?" I asked. He said that they could not pay anything for the content, but they would set up a URL for me."What's that?" I asked."It's kind of like your address on the web.""What would I do with this URL thing?""Well, it could be your business.""I don't see how it is a business, and there's not even any advertising," I cleverly replied."Not yet," he said. "But one day there might be."I thought about it for two seconds."Naah..." I said. "I've got bigger fish to fry. I've got to be going now. Maybe we can cooperate next time."And I walked out.Idiot!Well, that Internet thing turned out to be so much bigger than I had thought. I wish I had never made such a mistake. Sorry Anthony. You were right.1. The head of the Internet project expected the author to _______.A. become a user of their productB. put advertisements on their webC. provide video news for their networkD. get an email address from the Internet2. The guy's offer was rejected because the author ______A. didn't think it a good dealB. was unwilling to trust a strangerC. was too occupied to start a new businessD. was worried about the safety of e-business3. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. I don't believe your words.B. I ought to cook dinner now.C. I need to get more payment.D. I have something more important to do.4. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?A. Power of New TechnologyB. Never Too Old to LearnC. My Biggest Mistake EverD. Building a Business PartnershipBIf your job requires a lot of sitting, you could be putting your health at danger. The American Journal of Epidemiology (流行病学) did a study in 2010 on the correlation (相互联系) between sitting and an individual's physical health. In the study, 53,440 working men and 69,776 working women were surveyed on their time spent sitting. The subjects were all disease free when employed. The researchers identified 11,307 deaths in men and 7,923 deaths in women during the 14-year follow-up.The findings: Women who reported sitting for more than six hours per day had an approximately 40 higher all-cause death rate than those who reported less than three hours a day, and men had an approximately 20 higher death rate.Well, now's a fine time to get this information. But why didn't they tell me this years ago? I would have planned on taking a more active job instead of the sedentary (坐着的) job of an editor. So what can you do if you have to work for a living at a job that requires a lot of sitting? Here are some ideas:Take frequent breaks. It is recommended that workers vary activities, change their position, and take short breaks every 20 minutes to rest muscles and increase blood circulation. Get a standing desk. Some studies have shown that working from an upright position may be better for health. The serious fitness people can even purchase a treadmill (跑步机) desk. It only goes about one mile per hour. Have a walking meeting. If your group is kind of small, going for a walk while discussing topics is a good alternative.5. Spanning New York’s East River, it provided the first traffic artery between Manhattan Island and Brooklyn. Before that, the only transportation was by ferries, which were slow and could be dangerous in winter. The construction of a bridge over the East River had been discussed since the early 19th century, but the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 deflected all consideration of the project. When the war ended in 1865, the bridge became an important issue once more. In 1867, the New York State passed an act setting up the New York Bridge Company for the purpose of constructing a bridge between Manhattan Island and Brooklyn.John Augustus Roebling was chosen to design the bridge. Born in Germany in 1806, he held aggressive views as a student and was listed by the German police as a dangerous figure. He emigrated to America in 1830 to escape political discrimination.Roebling proposed a bridge with a span of 1,500 feet (465 m), with two towers in the East River serving as the main piers. The bridge that was actually built is longer—1,597 feet (486 m), the longest suspension bridge at that time.4. What was the purpose of building the Brooklyn Bridge?A. To replace an old bridge.B. He was the first person to propose the construction of the bridge.C. He was chosen to design the bridge because of his aggressive views.D. He moved to America because he was discriminated against in his home country.CWhen it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better.” But what they do not realize is that overtreatment—too many scans, too many blood tests, too many procedures—may bring harm. Sometimes a test leads you down a path to more and more testing, some of which may be invasive, or to treatment for things that should be left alone.Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener’s disease, an uncommon disorder of the immune system, they found it difficult to refuse testing recommended by her doctor. The doctor insisted on office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. He frequently ordered blood tests and X-rays, and repeatedly referred her to specialists for even minor complaints. Even when tests came back negative, more were ordered, and she was hospitalized as prevention when she developed a cold. She had as many as 25 doctor visits during one six-month period. The couple was spending about $30,000 a year for her care. After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other patients in online support groups. “It’s a really hard thing to determine when they’ve crossed the line,” Mr. Power said. “You think she’s getting the b est care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose?” Mr. Power then spoke with his own primary care doctor, who advised him to find a new specialist to oversee Mrs. Power’s care. Under the new doctor’s care, the regular testi ng stopped and Mrs. Power’s condition stabilized. Now she sees the doctor only four or five times a year.8. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Treatments do not always cause harmful side effects.B. Patients tend to believe more testing is better treatment.C. Too much medical care may not be beneficial to patients.D. Doctors generally recommend office visits that are necessary.9. Which of the following was a problem for Mrs. Power during her medical treatment?A. She had to be hospitalized for three weeks whenever she had a cold.B. When test results showed she was fine, her doctor still ordered more tests.C. She did not have any insurance, so she became penniless because of her illness.D. Her doctor asked her to consult other specialists due to her constant complaints.10. Who does “they” in the third paragraph most likely refer to?A. Doctors.B. Other patients.C. Mr. and Mrs. Power.D. The online support groups.11. What led to the Powers’ doubt about Mrs. Power’s treatment?A. Mrs. Power’s condition getting worse.B. The results of her blood tests.C. Knowing about other patients’ treatment.D. The advice from Mr. Power’s doctor.DWhat transportation do you use get around town? Perhaps you should try a Segway! The Segway is perfect for short journey. It is an electric vehicle that consists of a platform between two wheels, with a pole that connects the platform to the handlebars. To ride it, you step up onto the platform, and control the Segway by moving your body. Lean forwards to go faster, and backwards to slow down.On older models, direction is controlled by a twist grip on the left handlebar. This varies the speeds between the two motors; a decrease in the speed of the left wheel would turn the Segway to the left. With newer models you simply lean to the left or right. Meanwhile, a gyroscope detects your movements and prevents the machine from falling over. The Segway has a maximum speed of 19 km per hour and a range of about 38 km. After that, you need to plug it in and recharge the battery.Segways are helpful in various situations. People with mobility problems can now enjoy walks in the country with their friends and family. Some golfers use them as an alternative to the golf cart. And dog owners now have an easier way to take the dog to the park. A few police forces use Segways, too. They allow officers to move quickly while maintaining contact with the public. They are also becoming a common sight on airport. However, the most popular use is in tourism, particularly for city tours. Visit any major tourist city in summer, sit outside a cafe for a while and there is a good chance you will see a group of tourists passing on Segways.12.What is the Segway according to this passage?A. A pole that connects two handlebars.B.A newly appeared public traffic vehicle.C. A bicycle with a platform between two wheels.D. An electric two-wheeled vehicle for short trips.13. What controls the speed of a Segway?A. The two handlebars.B. The twist grip on the left.C. The driver’s body movement.D. A gyroscope on the vehicle.14.How far can you travel on a Segway at most?A. Less than 19 km.B. About 19 km.C. About 38 km.D. More than 38 km.15. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss?A. What a Segway is like.B. Where to find a Segway.C. How to control a Segway.D. When a Segway is useful.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Even scientists don’t know much about the animal in the wild because it is so private. We do know that the clouded leopard isn’t actually a leopard. It is a species of its own. However, it does have spots like a leopard. They help it blend into the background in the forest. What else do we know about the cat? It is one of the best climbers of all wild cats. This skill is clearly imprinted in the kittens early on by their mothers and by instinct. In the wild, the cat lives in the tropical rain forests of Asia. It hunts small animals, such as squirrels and monkeys. It is listed on the United States Endangered Species Act. This protects it from being hunted. Scientists have speculated that the wild population is getting smaller, but no actual numbers are available.into extinction. The Clouded Leopard Project has recently begun a conservation effort in Thailand. It is a natural home of the clouded leopard. Funds will be given to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo to help with the breeding of these cats. Part of the money also will help save the habitat of the wild cats. People will work to monitor these wild cats. They will be photographed instead of being sedated, or drugged, to be tagged(加标签). Sedating clouded leopards could cause the cats’ bodies to lose too much water, or worse. The project has had some great successes in the last few years. Two cubs were born in the United States, and two were born in Thailand. Members of the Clouded Leopard Project hope the urge to protect such species will become embedded in people’s minds. They sponsor several education programs at zoos. They also sponsor programs to directly help the cats. Through their work they ultimately will increase the population of this species.65. What made a clouded leopard not easy to find in the forest?A. Spots like a leopard.B. A species of its own.C. Best climbing skills.D. Extinction of such animals.66. _____ is not included in the Clouded Leopard Project?A. Breeding clouded leopards in zoos.B. Monitoring the cats by labeling them.C. The Clouded Leopard Project aims at increasing the population of the cat.D. Observing clouded leopards’ behavior protects the cats from being hunted.(B)(C)With greenhouse gas emissions(排放)hitting record levels and passing climate scientist's worst predictions, a new group of Chinese activists is making its voice heard at the United Nations climate talks, the COP17, which was held in Durban, South Africa. The delegation of independent Chinese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) believes that civil society must play a bigger role in the global climate crisis. C Plus is the name given to the project launched by 42 Chinese NGOs, calling for domestic and global action to fight climate change. And they think the best way of demanding governments' action is to take action by themselves. The message is clear: climate action is too important and too urgent. It can't wait. The top-down process of negotiations that we are seeing at the UN is too slow.C Plus has three components, which together explain its name. C Plus stands for: Beyond Commitment. This means that NGOs must put pressure on their governments to achieve targets that are beyond those that have been officially stated. Second is Beyond China -- in other words, NGOs outside and inside of China together must strive to influence their respective governments to take action. Finally, Beyond Climate. The project targets not just carbon reduction but othergovernment's task of environment responsibility and raising public awareness in environment protection. And NGOs can claim some notable successes. NGOs sponsored “26-degree air conditioning office”among the public, which later became a government regulation. A group of Chinese citizens organized together and stopped the construction of a dangerous chemical plant in Xiamen. In total, there are 3,539 environment NGOs in China, in which 55.2 percent now have their own offices, and 26 percent have fixed source of investment. However, most environment NGOs still face problems including difficulty in raising money, shortage in personnel and weak organization ability in their development process. In Durban, Chinese NGOs have arrived as a team and are prepared to state their demands.72. The passage is mainly about _____.A. Durban climate change conferenceB. environment NGOs in ChinaC. C plus project launched by NGOsD. achievements of NGOs73. Which of the following is true about the C Plus?A. It is an organization devoted to controlling the greenhouse gas emission.B. It is a program aiming at influencing government to take action to protect environment.C. It is a project designed by the government to unite NGOs inside and outside China.D. It is a statement calling for public awareness in environment protection.74. Most environment NGOs don’t lack _____.A. financial supportB. human resourcesC. development goalsD. organizational skills75. What can be inferred from the passage about the NGOs?A. They once pushed the government to make a regulation concerning office temperature.B. They pushed forward the slow negotiations by adopting the top-down style.C. They were directly involved in making environment-related policies.D. They successfully pressurized the government to achieve the unofficially stated targets. Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for eachAutism is a disorder of early development that causes severe problems in thinking, communicating with others, and feeling a part of the outside world. Taken from the Greek word autos meaning “alone,” autism prevents children from developing normal social relationships, even with their parents. Not all autistic infants and children are alike; in fact, there is no single typical clinical picture of the disorder. However, certain types of behavior are noted in a majority of autistic children. Autistic infants will not cuddle, and they do not like to be picked up. The usual things that children do to imitate adults, such as waving goodbye, are not observed in autistic children. Instead, autistic children very often repeat such movements as flicking a hand, twisting an arm or leg, or banging the head over and over. Strange gestures and distorted facial expressions are common.Language develops slowly, if at all. Some autistic children remain totally silent, while others merely repeat words they hear or communicate by gestures. They have little or no interest in making friends. They smile rarely, if ever, and will avoid making eye contact. Unlike normal children, they tend to fixate on a single object or task, such as spinning the wheels on a toy car over and over.At one time autism was blamed on bad parenting. Now itis believed to be caused by abnormalities in the brain. Several possible causes of these abnormalities have been proposed: an illness the mother suffered during her pregnancy; too little oxygen at the time of birth; or possiblyan abnormal gene. In some cases, X rays have revealed abnormalities in the structure of the brain itself. There is no way to diagnose autism apart from observing the child's behavior closely over a period of time.Although some patient-tailored programs can help children function better, the life of these children is generally hard to predict. Some will remain severely impaired throughout their lives. A majority always will depend heavily on support from relatives and professional caregivers, and may require special living arrangements and close supervision. However, progressive changes in the treatment of these children have enabled about one in six to live independently and work productively. What’s more, the intelligence level of the child partly affects the ability to function.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. If you have been following the news you will know that the world’s population recently reached seven billion – probably on 31st October. The statistics concerning human population growth are astonishing. It was only 12 years ago, in 1999, that the world’s population reached six billion. In 1969 there were 3.5 billion people on the planet, which is to say our numbers have doubled in only 42 years. A century ago, in 1911, there were only 1.8 billion of us: 26% of today’s total. As for future population growth, it seems there will probably be eight billion people by 2030 and nine billion by around 2050. After that, predictions vary: many experts think the total will rise more slowly, perhaps reaching ten billion by the end of the century; but a few believe the fast rise might continue, leading to a global population of as many as 15 billion by 2100. There are big differences between rates of population growth around the world. The fastest rates are generally in the world’s poorer countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, while the populations of rich countries are mostly growing much more slowly, or even shrinking in a few cases. (Germany and Japan, for example, will have smaller populations in 2050 than they do now.) This fact explains another interesting statistic: in 1900 Europe contained around 25% of the world’s people, but in 2050 it will have less than 10%.There are many reasons for fast population growth, but the most significant include medical advances and generally improved standards of living in poor countries, which mean fewer deaths from diseases or from malnutrition. Indeed, average life expectancy across the world has risen 20 years since the 1950s, from 48 to 68, and the biggest rises have been in poor countries. Some people already talk of a crisis of overpopulation, expecting there to be wars over access to natural resources and warning that, because those resources are limited, it is impossible for seven billion people (let alone nine or ten) to have the kind of high-consumption lifestyles that people in the world’s richer countries currently enjoy. Others, however, believe the planet can accommodate another two or three billion humans without a social or environmental disaster. We can only hope the optimists will be proved right.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS)81. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark building, ships and other vehicles related to a country. The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is , rather, the product of thousand s of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable (易受损害的). Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾)before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves. These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1008 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.8. The best title for the passage would be_________________A. Uses of FlagsB. Power of the National FlagC. Type of FlagsD. Development of the National Flag9. The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because_____________A. they could tell wind directionB. they could bring good luck to fightersC. they were believed to stand for natural forces.D. they were handed down by the ancestors10. What does the author know of the first national flag?A. He knows when it was sent to Europe.B. He believes it was made in Egypt.C. He doubts where it startedD. He thinks it came from China.11. What will the author most probably talk about next?A. The second ancestor of the national flag.B. The role of China in the spread of the national flag.C. The use of modern flags in Europe.D. The importance of modern flags.DIt was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently. My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I ’m so glad I did.On the road to the harbour we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on board, we noticed two big humps(里脊)in the distance. On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn’t believe it---there aren’t any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive. The little baby whale--- actually as big as our boat-- was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and camp up suddenly, making big whirlpools(旋涡)and waves. “ she’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said. At this point , my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe---and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance. In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been withthose wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.12. The author says “ I’m so glad I did”(in Para.2) because_________A. he witnessed the whole process of fishingB. he enjoyed the beauty of the calm seaC. he spent the weekend with his familyD. he experienced the rescue of the whales13. The harbour survived the storm owing to____________A. the shape of the harbourB. the arms of the bayC. the still water in the channelD. the long coast line14. The bridge that was actually built is longer—1,597 feet (486 m), the longestsuspension bridge at that time.4. What was the purpose of building the Brooklyn Bridge?A. To replace an old bridge.B. After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other pati ents in online support groups. “It’s a really hard thing to determine when they’ve crossed the line,” Mr. Power said. “You think she’s getting the best care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose?” Mr. Power then spoke wit h his own primary care doctor, who advised him to find a new specialist to oversee Mrs. Power’s care. Underthe new doctor’s care, the regular testing stopped and Mrs. Who does “they” in the third paragraph most likely re fer to?A.
