While we would be the first to admit that some rich people are dishonest,we must add that achieving the status<n身份,地位,情形,状况> of “the rich”(defined, say,by having a net worth<净收入,净值> of $1,000,000) is not particularly difficult, contrary to<和… A person’s life at any given time incorporates both external and internal aspects. The external system is composed of our memberships in the culture: our job, social class, family and social roles, how we present ourselves to and participate in the world. The interior realm concerns the meanings this participation has for each of us. In what ways are our values, goals, and aspirations being invigorated or violated by our present life system? How many parts of our personality can we lie out, and what parts are we suppressing? How do we feel about our way of living in the world at any given time?

The inner realm is where the crucial shifts in bedrock begin to throw a person off balance, signaling the necessity to change and move on to a new footing in the next stage of development. These crucial shifts occur throughout life, yet people consistently refuse to recognize that they possess an internal life system. Ask anyone who seems down, ―why are you feeling low?‖ Most will displace the inner message onto a marker event: ―I’ve been down since we moved, since I changed jobs, since my wife went back to graduate school and turned into a damn social worker in sackcloth,‖ and so on. Probably less than ten percent would say: ‖There is some unknown disturbance within me, and even t hough it’s painful, I feel I have to stay with it and ride it out.‖ Even fewer people would be able to explain that the turbulence they feel may have no external cause. And yet it may not resolve itself for several years.

Unit 3 Born to WinBorn to WinYou cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself.— Galileo[1] Each human being is born as something unique , something that never existed before. Each person is born with what he needs to win at life. A normal person can see, hear, touch, taste, and think for himself. Each has his own unique potentials —his capabilities and limitations. Each can be an important, thinking, aware, and creatively productive person in his own right — a winner.[2] The words “winner” and “loser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who defeats the other person by dominating and making him lose. Instead a winner is one who responds genuinely by being trustworthy and responsive , both as an individual and as a member of a society. A loser is one who fails to respond genuinely.[3] Few people are winners or losers all the time. It's a matter of degree . However, once a person has the capacity to be a winner, his chances are greater for becoming even more so…[4] Achievement is not the most important thing for winners; genuineness is. The genuine person realizes his own uniqueness and appreciates the uniqueness of others.[5] A winner is not afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge. He can separate facts from opinion and doesn't pretend to have all the answers. He listens to others, evaluates what they say, but comes to his own conclusions.[6] A winner is flexible . He does not have to respond in known, rigid ways. He can change his plans when the situation calls for it. A winner has a love for life. He enjoys work, play, food, other people, and the world of nature. Without guilt he enjoys his own accomplishments. Without envy he enjoys the accomplishments of others.[7] A winner cares about the world and its people. He is not separated from the general problems of society. He tries to improve the quality of life. Even in the face of national and international difficulty, he does not see himself as helpless . He does what he can to make the world a better place.[8] Although people are born to win, they are also born totally dependent on their environment. Winners successfully make the change from dependence to independence . Losers do not. Somewhere along the line losers begin to avoid becoming independent . This usually begins in childhood. Poor nutrition , cruelty , unhappy relationships, disease, continuing disappointments, and inadequate physical care are among the manyexperiences that contribute to making people losers.[9] A loser is held back by his low capacity to appropriately express himself through a full range of possible behavior. He may be unaware of other choices for his life if the path he chooses goes nowhere. He is afraid to try new things. He repeats not only his own mistakes and often repeats those of his family and culture.[10] A loser has difficulty giving and receiving love. He does not enter into close, honest, direct relationships with others. Instead, he tries to manipulate them into living up to his expectations and channels his energies into living up to their expectations.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the relationshipbetween equality and personal achievement. Some people believe that individualscan achieve more in egalitarian societies. Others believe that high levels ofpersonal achievement are possible only if individuals are free to succeed orfail according to their individual merits. What is your view of the relationship between equality and personalsuccess?

In my opinion, an egalitarian society is one in which everyone has the samerights and the same opportunities. I completely agree that people can achievemore in this kind of society.Education is an important factor with regard to personal success in life. Ibelieve that all children should have access to free schooling, and highereducation should be either free or affordable for all those who chose to pursuea university degree. In a society without free schooling or affordable highereducation, only children and young adults from wealthier families would haveaccess to the best learning opportunities, and they would therefore be betterprepared for the job market. This kind of inequality would ensure the success ofsome but harm the prospects of others.I would argue that equal rights and opportunities are not in conflict withpe ople’s freedom to succeed or fail. In other words, equality does not mean thatpeople lose their motivation to succeed, or that they are not allowed to fail.On the contrary, I believe that most people would feel more motivated to workhard and reach their potential if they thought that theylived in a fairsociety. Those who did not make the same effort would know that they had wastedtheir opportunity. Inequality, on the other hand, would be more likely todemotivate people because they would know that the odds of success were stackedin favour of those from privileged backgrounds. In conclusion, it seems to me that there is a positive relationship betweenequality and personal success.。

Successful individuals and ordinary people often exhibit distinct characteristics that set them apart. While both groups strive to achieve their goals, the paths they take and the mindsets they possess can be vastly different. Understanding these differences can provide valuable insights into the factors that contribute to an individual's success. One of the most significant differences between successful people and ordinary individuals lies in their mindset. Successful people tend to have a growth mindset, which means they believe that their abilities and talents can be developed through effort, dedication, and learning. They view challenges as opportunities for growth and are not deterred by setbacks or failures. In contrast, ordinary people often have a fixed mindset, where they believe that their abilities are set in stone and cannot be changed. This mindset can lead to a fear of failure and a reluctance to take risks, which can ultimately hinder their progress.Another key distinction is the level of self-discipline and focus thatsuccessful people possess. Successful individuals understand the importance of setting clear goals and creating a plan to achieve them. They are able to prioritize their tasks, manage their time effectively, and stay committed to their objectives, even in the face of distractions or obstacles. Ordinary people, on the other hand, may struggle with maintaining a consistent level of focus and may be more easily sidetracked by immediate gratification or short-term pleasures.Successful people also tend to have a strong sense of resilience and adaptability. They are able to bounce back from setbacks and learn from their mistakes, using these experiences to improve and grow. They are also adept at navigating through changing circumstances and are willing to adjust their strategies as needed. Ordinary people may be more prone to feeling discouraged or defeated when faced with challenges, and may have a harder time adapting to new situations or changing environments.Another distinguishing factor is the way successful people approach learning and personal development. Successful individuals are often lifelong learners, constantly seeking out new knowledge, skills, and experiences that can help them improve and expand their capabilities. They are open to feedback, actively seek out mentors or coaches, and are willing to step outside their comfort zones to try new things. Ordinary people, on the other hand, may be moreresistant to change and may be less inclined to invest time and effort into their own personal growth and development.Successful people also tend to have a strong sense of purpose and a clear vision for their lives. They are driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the world and are willing to put in the hard work and dedication required to achieve their goals. They are able to see the bigger picture and are not easily deterred by short-term setbacks or failures. Ordinary people may be more focused on immediate needs or desires and may struggle to maintain a long-term perspective. Finally, successful individuals often have a strong support network and are adept at building and maintaining meaningful relationships. They understand the value of collaboration, networking, and seeking out the advice and expertise of others. They are also willing to give back and share their knowledge and experience with others. Ordinary people may be more isolated and may have a harder time building and maintaining strong, supportive relationships. In conclusion, the differences between successful people and ordinary individuals are multifaceted and complex. While both groups may share some common goals and aspirations, the mindsets, behaviors, and strategies that they employ can vary significantly. By understanding these differences, individuals can strive to develop thecharacteristics and habits that are associated with success, and ultimately, work towards achieving their own personal and professional goals.。

The Distinguishing Features of Successful Individuals. In the tapestry of life, successful individuals stand out like vibrant threads against the plain background of ordinary existences. While the threads of success and mediocrity may seem intertwined at first glance, a closer examination reveals profound differences that set the former apart. This essay delves into the keycharacteristics that distinguish successful individuals from the rest, exploring areas such as mindset, action orientation, resilience, learning abilities, and their approach to networking.Mindset is perhaps the most fundamental distinction between successful people and the ordinary lot. Successful individuals possess a growth mindset, which equips them with the belief that their abilities can be developed and improved through effort and perseverance. They view challenges as opportunities for growth and see failure as astepping stone to success. Conversely, those with a fixed mindset believe their talents are innate and unchangeable, often shying away from challenges and failing to learn from their mistakes.Action orientation is another hallmark of success. Successful individuals are not content with mere aspirations; they turn their dreams into reality through consistent and determined action. They identify their goals, craft plans to achieve them, and execute those plans with precision and discipline. This laser focus on action, coupled with their ability to stay motivated and driven, sets them apart from those who merely talk about their dreams but never take the necessary steps to pursue them.Resilience is crucial in the journey to success. Successful individuals are not defined by their setbacks; instead, they use them as fuel to bounce back stronger. They understand that failure is a natural part of the process and that it's through these failures that they learn, grow, and refine their skills. This resilience, coupled with a positive attitude, allows them to navigatethrough challenges with ease, turning each obstacle into an opportunity for growth.Learning abilities are also crucial in distinguishing successful individuals. They are constantly seeking to improve themselves, whether it's through formal education, hands-on experience, or simply by observing and learning from others. They understand that knowledge is power and that by continuously expanding their knowledge base, they can stay ahead of the curve and adapt to changing circumstances. This thirst for knowledge and continuous learning sets them apart from those who are content with what they already know.Lastly, the way successful individuals approach networking is another key factor. They understand that success is often a result of collaboration and thatbuilding meaningful relationships can open doors to new opportunities. They invest time and energy in cultivating relationships with others, seeking to add value and contribute to the lives of those they meet. This approach not only enhances their personal growth but also creates asupportive network that can propel them forward in their endeavors. In conclusion, successful individuals possess a unique blend of characteristics that set them apart from the rest. Their growth mindset, action orientation, resilience, learning abilities, and approach to networking are all integral components of their success. While these characteristics are not exclusive to successful people, their combined effect is what区分s them from the ordinary lot, allowing them to achieve remarkable success in their respective fields.。

The relationship between establishing oneself and gaining fame is a complex and multifaceted one. On one hand, establishing oneself is a necessary foundation forachieving fame. When we talk about establishing oneself, we refer to building a solid reputation, gaining recognitionfor one's skills or achievements, and establishing a strong presence in a particular field or industry. This process involves hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Itrequires individuals to develop their skills, acquire knowledge, and gain experience in their chosen field. By doing so, they lay the groundwork for future success and create a platform from which they can eventually gain fame. For example, a talented musician who spends yearshoning their craft, performing in small venues, andbuilding a loyal fan base is establishing themselves in the music industry. Through their dedication and hard work, they gain recognition for their talent and begin to attract attention from industry professionals. This recognition and attention serve as a stepping stone towards gaining fame. Without first establishing themselves as a skilled and talented musician, it would be unlikely for them to achieve fame.On the other hand, gaining fame can also contribute to further establishing oneself. When someone becomes famous, they often gain access to a wider audience and more opportunities. Their name and reputation become known to a larger number of people, which can open doors for collaborations, endorsements, and other career advancements. This increased visibility and exposure can help themsolidify their position in their field and furtherestablish themselves as a prominent figure. For instance, a successful actor who becomes famous through their performances in blockbuster films may attract the attention of renowned directors and producers. This can lead to more prestigious roles and opportunities to workwith other talented individuals in the industry. As aresult, their reputation and standing in the film industry are further enhanced, contributing to their establishmentas a respected and influential actor.

influence of talents of different levels -回复

Eel Prague was the first black journalist who won the Pulitzer News Prize in the history of the United States. Brave and hardworking,he made outstanding achievements and created a miracle in the history of the American news. Thinking back to his own childhood experiences, he said,“Our family was so poor that my parents made a living by toiling for others. At that time, my father was a sailor, who would have to go between the ports on the Atlantic Ocean. I always thought the black people humble① like us couldn’t have any prospect,so perhaps we would wander about aimlessly like the ships where my father w orked.”One day when he was nine, his father took him to visit Van Gogh’s former residence②.

The Relationship between Class and Achievement in the UKBased on economic capital, social capital and cultural capital of British people, Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the new social class system in 2010, which can be concluded into three categories (Employers and business operators, private operators, employees) and seven levels (Elite 6%, Established middle class 25%, Technical middle class 6%, New affluent workers 15%, Traditional working class 14%, Emergent service sector 19%, Precariat, 15%) (Marshall et al, 2012). Data reflect the expansion of middle class, existence of new affluent class, and the increasing number of working women, especially the growth in middle and upper class. Social class links closely with education. There are around 2,500 independent schools in UK. In terms of the proportion of students attending private and state education, only around7% of all British children and 16% of all British students under 18 have the opportunity to receive the so-called elite education (Bukodi & Goldthorpe, 2011).In modern British society, it seems that there are a lot of open opportunities, in fact, many are hindered by economic and political barriers. Therefore, during a person’s growth, except for the influence of personal ability, talent, luck, effort etc., class is a significant variable. This paper explores the relationship between class and achievement in the UK through the acquisition of educational achievements and initial occupational achievement. In today’s post-industrial society, in order to gain relatively high income and social position, people must accumulate their educational achievements through education system (Bukodi & Goldthorpe, 2011). While the education system in the UK also adapts to the competitive characteristic of labor market, legally constructing primary, secondary and higher education levels, so as to let families with different ages and economic power to choose (Marshall et al, 2012). In this case, if parents want to improve their class status, or want their children to improve class status, they must participate in the competition of educational resources. As a result, limited educational resources more present as an important method for all classes to maintain or improve social status, consolidate or enhance power resources, and show socialprestige over generations (Parkin, 2013). Particularly, when diploma and certificate become a main human resource representation in the workplace, education opportunity with a higher level becomes an important factor for a person to get a better job and reach larger achievements. Obviously, this factor is given and protected by the government. Currently, in the UK, no matter enterprise or government recruitment, requirement for educational background is always clarified.Due to this, an important content of family economic expense decision-making is getting a higher level of education opportunity, or providing more economic support to help themselves or their children to stay at the advantaged position in competition. Therefore, parents’ class status, social networks and financial capacity are of great significance. Higher social classes usually means higher economic capacity, broader and more effective relational networks (Bukodi & Goldthorpe, 2011). On the one side, many parents seek for or purchase chances of receiving education for their children, and make their children to obtain legal and proper competitive power, such as hiring extracurricular tutors, spend a lot of money to transfer children to better schools. On the other side, through class relational networks, many parents try to create abundant social resources for their children, so as to make them gain maximized educational benefits (Luke, 2010). Of course, more commonly, advantaged class status also presents as the intergenerational transmission of culture. Parents who received better education can directly help children to study well, indirectly inspire their children, or motivate their ambitions, so as to make them realize their career goals successfully (Marsh, 1986). It can be seen that class background of a family, especially class status of the father or mother, has very prominent influence to children’s education, and will further influence children’s acquisition of initial social and economic status.Class origin affects the fairness of children’s educational opportunity. In any time, educational background of parents or education capital amount of parents can directly and strongly influence their children’s capital of receiving education. That is to say, the more educational capital parents have, the more educational capital their children will gain. In the past, although knowledge was not as important as today’s, educational capital of fathers still influenced children’s obtaining of educationalachievements (Royle, 2012). With the largely increasing social status of females since the 1960s and 1970s, power of mothers’ education capital becomes more evident (Archer et al, 2005). However, it should be noticed that in recent years, with the expanding enrollment of higher education in the UK, higher education gradually transforms from elite education to mass education, influence of parents’ educational capital becomes even enhanced (Archer et al, 2005). With the increasing importance of educational achiev ements, parents’ socioeconomic status presents direct and prominent influence, as the popularization of higher education actually provide more convenience for upper class children to receive education. In contemporary background of pursuing educational equality, class inheritance of education actually leads to educational gap.No matter the influence from parents or educational system, these all belong to ascriptive factors rather than afterward factors (Arber et al, 2014). The largest inequality of this era may be the differences of educational opportunity and educational capital accumulation are caused by ascriptive factors represented by social class. If this unequal system and resource allocation maintains, education inequality will be maintained permanently. Other inequalities in British society will not be thoroughly changed as well. After all, class directly influences people’s income, and further influences people’s capacity of gaining educational achievements.Class origin also performs evident imp acts on children’s attainment of initial socioeconomic status. During the in-depth urbanization of British society, occupational differentiation caused by class stratification makes educational capital have significant explanatory power to occupational achievement gaining (Bukodi & Goldthorpe, 2011). However, such influence is different in different times. Before the industrial revolution, restricted environment forced many children to inherit their parents’ occupation status, especially those from lower cl asses, and it was extremely difficult for them to increase their classes (Royle, 2012). With the increasing power of educational capital, people have more occupational choices. However, socioeconomic position of parents strengthens its impact on children’s acquisition of socioeconomic status. With the expanding enrollment of universities and colleges, such phenomenonbecomes even prominent.Considering parents’ educational capital and socioeconomic status have passed onto their children’s acquisition of educational capital, parents’ socioeconomic status presents rising influence to children’s initial socioeconomic status, which means the accentuation of the inequality of occupational attainment in the UK. In addition, factors which affect the acquisition of initial socioeconomic status also perform prominent and important effect to people’s acquisition of current even terminal socioeconomic status and achievements (Luke, 2010). As the acquisition of current occupational status has accumulative effect of family support. That is to say, acquisition of current occupational status and achievements accumulates long-term influence from parents’ class. Nowadays, explanatory power of current occupational status acquisition is almost as important as children’s initial socioeconomic status and their educational capital.Under such circumstances, no matter the obtaining of educational achievements or carrier achievements, effect of family’s class background has been further enhanced, thus ascriptive factors of social flow improve the social expectations function (Marsh, 1986). This will keep increasing social inequality and lead to intergenerational inheritance and replacement of class. This is beneficial for the development of inner strata consciousness, but will do great harm to social stability and solidarity of the UK.Deepening of post-industrialization may not bring the increase of social openness. Influenced by system, limited flow space and unfair educational opportunities, rapid economic progress and expansion of educational sector intensify competition of educational opportunities and occupational opportunities. Class background of family represented by parents severely influences people’s educational achievements as well as early career achievements. This implie s that the higher parents’ social class is, the more educational and occupational achievements their children will gain. On the contrary, the lower parents’ social class is, the less educational and occupational achievements their children will get. Class status filtering mechanism formed by job competition limits flowing channels of middle and lower classes within generations aswell as over generations. Through the selection of social flow mechanism, upper classes will gain more opportunities to make achievements. While due to the competitive selection of upper classes, employment opportunities brought by new economic sectors strongly exclude offspring of lower classes, therefore lower classes always create much less achievements than upper classes. This affects fairness of British society to some certain extent, which should be paid high attention by policy-makers.References:Arber, S., Fenn, K., & Meadows, R. 2014. In recent years, there has been growing interest in therelationship between equality and personal achievement. Some people believe that individuals can achieve more inegalitarian societies. Others believe that high levels of personal achievement are possible only if individuals are free to succeed or fail according to their individual merits. What is your view of the relationship between equality and personal success?

In my opinion, an egalitarian society is one in which everyone has the same rights and the same opportunities. I completely agree that people can achieve more in this kind of society.Education is an important factor with regard to personal success in life. I believe that all children should have access to free schooling, and higher education should be either free or affordable for all those who chose to pursue a university degree. In a society without free schooling or affordable higher education, only children and young adults fromwealthier families would have access to the best learning opportunities, and they would therefore be better prepared for the job market. This kind of inequality would ensure the success of some but harm the prospects of others.I would argue that equal rights and opportunities are not in conflict with people's freedom to succeed or fail. In other words, equality does not mean that people lose their motivation to succeed, or that they are not allowed to fail. On the contrary, I believe that most people would feel more motivated to work hard and reach their potential if they thought that they lived in a fair society. Those who did not make the same effort would know that they had wasted their opportunity. Inequality, on the other hand, would be more likely to demotivate people because they would know that the odds of success were stacked in favour of those from privileged backgrounds. In conclusion, it seems to me that there is a positive relationship between equality and personal success.。
