Unit 6 Design Period One Warm-up & Lesson 1 Tomorrow’s WorldChinese Paper-cuttingPaper-cutting is a very special visual art of Chinese handicrafts. One saying is that it originated from the religious ceremony of offerings. The ancient people cut papers into animals or people. They either buried them with the dead or burned them on the funerals, wishing that things that paper stood for could be with the dead. After hundreds of years’ development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folk, especially women. It is easy to learn about cutting a piece of paper but very difficult to master it with perfection.Beginners need only a knife and paper. For craftsmen, they need knives and gravers of various types to make complicated(复杂的) patterns. For complicated patterns, people first paste the pattern on the paper and then use various kinds of knives to make it.No mistake can be made during the process otherwise the work would fail.Paper-cutting covers nearly all topics, from flowers, birds, animals, legendary people, figures in classic novels,to types of facial make-up in Beijing Opera.Paper-cutting has various styles in different parts of China. In the past, women living in the countryside gathered in their free time to make paper-cutting,which was a way to judge their skillfulness. As society develops, fewer and fewer women still regard it as a profession. At present, there are factories and associations for paper-cutting in China.Exhibitions and exchanges are held regularly and books of this kind are published.Paper-cutting has changed from decoration to a kind of art.At the same time,paper-cutting also appears in cartoons,on stage,in magazines or in TV series. 1.Why did ancient people burn paper animals or people on the funerals? They wanted them to go with the dead.2.If a mistake is made during the process of paper-cutting,what should the craftsmen do?They should have the process again and the previous work will be wasted.3.Is paper-cutting still popular today?Yes,as a kind of art,it is still popular.Period One Warm-up & Lesson 1 A Matter of TasteⅠ. 重点短语1.at high speed以高速2.such as例如3.fix one’s eyes on注视,凝视4.be deep in thought陷入沉思5.add...to增加,增添6.on the shore在岸边Ⅲ. Across this painting, named Racing Horse,we can see a horse running(run) at high speed like a missile across the sky.

Have you ever heard of the University of Phoenix Stadium? It has the most modern technology in the world.Workers began building the stadium in two thousand and three. It was completed about three years and four hundred fiftyfive million dollars later.Unlike most stadiums,it has a roof that fully opens. It is made of two parts that slide in and out. This area is called the Valley of the Sun.It sometimes is a very hot place. The average high temperature in the summer is above thirtyseven degrees Celsius. So the roof of the stadium can be closed to permit air conditioning machines to be used. But the roof can be opened during the cooler months for sporting and other events, like big rock concerts and trade shows. The stadium has an unusual feature(特征) that no other stadium has.The natural grass playing field rolls in and out of the structure as needed. The grass grows on an object like a giant tray(托盘).Most of the time the grass is moved outside to get sunshine and rain.Workers roll it back inside for football games.Officials say this makes the center more usable for nonsporting events.Architect Peter Eisenman designed the huge stadium. Its shape represents the barrel cactus(圆桶掌),a common(普通的) plant in the area. The huge metal pieces that form its walls shine brightly in the desert sun. 1.When did workers begin building the stadium?【答案】In 2003.2.Who designed the huge stadium?【答案】Peter Eisenman.SectionⅠReading(Ⅰ) (Warmup & Lesson 1)[新生词汇初识]Ⅰ. 2.I was deep in thought,so I didn't notice him coming in.3.The basin is filled with water soon. You can't pour more in.4.I had to report the accident at length as the reporter asked me to describeit in detail.5.Accidents due to driving at high speed were very common that weekend.6.The old lady fixed her eyes on the stranger.【答案】1-6 CAEFBD[教材语篇细研]第一步速读——了解文章主题和段落大意速读P36教材课文,选择最佳答案What is the passage mainly about?A.Artists. However, bridge building experts thought that it was an impossible project and told Roebling to forget it. But Roebling could not ignore the vision of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington,an engineer, that the bridge could be built. The father and son developed concepts of how it could be completed and how the difficulties could be overcome. After that, they began to build their dream bridge. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway(在进行中)a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left witha certain amount of brain damage, which made him unable to walk or talk or even move.Everyone had a negative comment since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how to build the bridge. In spite of these difficulties,W ashington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving it,he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. The project was underway again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on hiswife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed.Today the Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory to the victory of one man’s determination not to be defeated by circumstances. This is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical disability and achieves an impossible goal.1.When John Roebling had the idea of building the bridge,________.A. his son supported him immediatelyB. many experts thought it impossibleC. there was no bridge around New YorkD. he persuaded the government to support him2.What is the right order of the following statements?a.The Roeblings talked about the possibilities of building the bridge.b.Washington became disabled.c.John Roebling believed that building the bridge was possible.d.Washington’s wife helped instruct the building.A. adcbB.bcdaC.cabdD. adbc3.It can be inferred from the passage that______.A. the government did offer much help to build the bridgeB. to go to the Long Island from New York,we can go across Brooklyn Bridge nowC.
