1.Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Spacewalk! Most people don't know that the anniversary of an important event in space exploration occurred last month. On March 18, 1965, spaceman Aleksi Leonov became the first human to complete an Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) or spacewalk. It marked the first time that a human was able to leave a spacecraft and operate in the emptiness of space. It is a dangerous procedure, but one that is vital for the success of manned space missions.________ In space, a spacesuit must protect people from extreme cold and heat, provide air to breathe, and remove extra carbon dioxide. ________ Too much of it, and the spacesuit becomes firm and difficult to move in. Too little of it, and astronauts can become dangerously sick after returning to their spacecraft.Astronauts now perform complex jobs in the emptiness of space in modern spacesuits. They have logged many hours repairing and upgrading equipment on satellites during EVAs. ________ On July 20th, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon for the first time. There is no atmosphere on the moon, but there is gravity—about 17 percent of Earth's, which means Neil needed a special suit for walking on the moon's surface. Suits for the moon are equipped for exploration far from any vehicles, including tough boots that can resist cuts from the rough surface while walking. But sharp rocks weren't the only danger to astronauts. The moon surface is covered with a fine and flour-like dust which consists of small particles (颗粒) left over from the numerous meteorite(陨石) strikes on the moon. ________ When astronauts would leave the moon's gravity, the dust on their suits began floating all over. It got into delicate equipment inside the spacecraft and the astronaut's eyes and lungs. As different space agencies plan for returning people to the moon, new EVA suit designs will have to take something else into account. Keeping astronauts safe also means keeping their suits clean.A. However, EVAs don't just happen in empty space.B. It sticks to everything, eventually causing joints and seals to fail.C. Spacesuits also have to maintain ideal air pressure during a spacewalk.D. Unfortunately, most people have no idea about space exploration or spacesuits.E. Without the ability to work in space, we are unable to keep our space programs functional.F. There are a few things that must be taken into account to make an EVA both safe and effective 【答案】 F;C;A;B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文。

Population ChangeWhy is the world's population growing? The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900, people died at the average age of 30. By 2000 the average age was 65. But while increasing health was a typical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 nowadays. Furthermore, around 50% of the world's population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e. 2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss (especially since 80% of the world's people now live in such nations), but you'd be wrong. Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply? First, China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population decline hits the country. Second, if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise. Since 1992 the number of people dying has been bigger than that of those being born by a massive 50%. Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961. Why is this occurring? Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet and above all long-time alcoholism have much to do with it. If current trends don't bend, Russia's population will be about the size of Yemen's by the year 2050.In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total, 25% of India's working-age population has no education. In2030, a sixth of the country's potential work force could be totally uneducated. One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA, it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010-2030. Moreover, the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it's likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term.[把握考情]任务型阅读题在测试考生阅读理解能力的基础上,对阅读信息进行二次加工,归纳要点,筛选、整合和综合概括零散信息,以表格的形式侧重考查考生的单词拼写、词性转换、句式转换、段落归纳等综合能力。

1There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.Though in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.2Happy birthday! Do birthday really make people happy? Of course they do.Birthday celebrate the day when we were born.Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggest another year of growth and maturity(成熟)—or so we hope.We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story.Growing old is not exactly for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心)American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re young as you feel.” Older people jok e about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old.People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden.Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by.Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income.Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference.Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care, and housing. Some even experience age discrimination(歧视).American sociologist Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely--even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer.Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the group of the elderly.America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹)are “in”.Marketing experts are ready noticing this growing group of consumer.3Teaching kids to fish sometimes puzzles us parents. Now I’d like t o give you a few tips.First of all, start them young.Get them in a boat ,or on a pier ,or on the bank at as young an age as you possibly can. Obviously this means being extremely conscious about their safety. Whatever you do , DON’T plan on any fishing yourself. If fishing is going to happen, the fishing will be done by the kids with your help! This lets you pay attention to them and not ignore them while you fish.Next, make sure you plan the first trips to someplace where you can actually catch a lot of fish. At this point ,it doesn’t matter what kind or how big, just make sure they can catch some. A small child’s patience is very short, and waiting 30 minutes for a bite will turn them off in a hurry. You may need to go to a small pond where the fish are dying to eat bread balls. Any type of fish will do. Remember, this is for them, not for you.As they fish, cheer for every fish they catch. Make a really big deal out of it. Take pictures. And if it’s possible, take some home to clean. Let the child help you clean with a table knife, so he can’t get hurt.Make sure he makes and sees the connection from catching to cleaning to cooking. As soon as you have the fish cleaned, it’s into the kitchen to start cooking. Let him flour and cornmeal the fish. Let him see the fish cooking ,and talk about how good they are. Then when it’s ready, make sure you brag on the fact that he (or she ) caught these fish, and “aren’t they good?”In this way, I’m sure your kids will be interested in fishing and good at fishing.Sequoyah was born in about 1770 in the village of Taskigi. He was a Cherokee Indian, and, along with his entire tribe, he was illiterate. As a result of a hunting accident that left him partially crippled, he enjoyed more leisure time than other tribesmen. And he began to consider the idea that Indian people might also come to possess the secret of the “talking leaf”. Alone in the woods, he spent hours playing with pieces of wood or making odd little marks on one stone with another. Neither his wife nor his friends offered him any encouragement, and many laughed at him. But Sequoyah was engaged in his dream of developing an alphabet for the Cherokee language. At first, Sequoyah tried to give every word a separate character, but eventually he realized the pointlessness of such an approach and settled on giving one character to each sound. What he achieved twelve years later was a syllable of eighty-six characters representing all of sounds of Cherokee. In combination, they produced a written language of remarkable simplicity and effectiveness. It was so simple actually, that it could be learned in a few days. Within a matter of months, a population that had been entirely illiterate became almost entirely literate. As a tribute(感恩)to this great Indian educator, the tallest tree in North America, the Sierra Redwoods, was given the name Sequoyah.Watch out! QRIQ, Sony’s robot, is a few steps ahead of you. It can dance and kick a football, and it is the world’s first “running” robot.Until now robots could not run because they needed one foot on the floor at all times to remain stable. That all changed when Sony’s technology allowed QRIO to run.QRIO might be the world’s first running robot, but it won’t win in a race. The robot’s run is more like a jog. At 23 inches tall and weighing 15 pounds, QRIO can travel 46 feet per minute, which is about 0.5 mph. If QRIO were average human size, it would run a mile in 40 minutes. (Many humans can run a mile in about 10 minutes.)And if QRIO falls, it will get right back up. QRIO is programmed to check its position after a fall. It then turns itself face up and stands up again.QRIO can recognize people’s faces and voices. It has a special built-in camera that takes a picture when meeting people. It examines the pictures and remembers people.QRIO even expresses feelings through movements, conversation, and the use of its lights. QRIO is a quite friendly robot. If you meet the robot, it will ask you what kinds of things you like and don’t like. QRIO remembers all of the facts, so it can have more conversations with you. The robot already knows tens of thousands of words, but can always learn more.Don’t get too excited. This high-tech robot won’t be racing to your house any time soon. Sony says it has no immediate plans to sell QRIO.The population of the United States is growing older and will continue to do so. According to a report, 39 million Americans will be 65 or older by the yew 2010, 51 million by 2020, and 65 million by 2030.The "graying" of the United States is mainly due to the fact that people in the U. S. living longer. As a matter of fact, the number of U.S. citizens 85 years old and older is growing six times as fast as the rest of the population. It is also largely due to the old-growing of the "baby boomers," the generation born after World War II. In 1957, over 4.3 million babies were born. More than 75 million Americans were born between 1946 and 1964, the largest generation in U.S. history. In less than twenty pears, millions of them will become elderly people. The "graying" of the U.S. will greatly affect the nation's family and workforce. One likely development will be a gradual change in the family unit; it will move away from the nuclear family and towards a multigenerational family. The other likely development will be a change m the proportion (比例) of the nation's workforce. In 1989 there were 3.5 workers for every person 65 and older; by the year 2030, them will only be 2 workers for every person 65 and older. This year, about 2,300 teenagers from all over the world will spend about 10 months in US homes. At the same time about 1,300 American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and learn the rest of the world. Here is a 2-way student exchange in action .Fred,19, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived .But after 2 months of studying, the language became easy for him. School was completely different from what he had expected and it was much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of 6 that were usually taken in the US.Family life ,too, was different. The father’s word was the law. All the activities were done with the family rather than individually .Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed having a car.“Back home ,you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time .In Germany, you walk but you soon learn to like i t .”At the same time, in America, Mike ,a friendly German boy, was also forming his own ideas. “I suppose I should criticize American schools” he says , “It is far too easy for our level but I have to say that I like it a lot In Germany, we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many other activities. I think that maybe American schools are better than in training their citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”It is December thirty-first,2004,the time when the old year dies and the New Year is born. Many Americans have parties at home and invite all their friends .Many of these events are noisy。
