In a few years, this area will become a natural habitat and a playground for animals and residents. This peaceful area didn't appear naturally, but through planning and action taken by Catlin Gabel's Tiny Forest project launched by teacher Patrick Walsh.Forests typically take hundreds of years to mature, with four stages of growth. “Tiny forests flatten out time through the plant ing of all four layers (层),” Walsh explained. The end result is a fastgrowing, native forest in about 20 years. Over 600 plants from 43 species will be planted in the tiny forest, the first one in Oregon.Walsh was inspired to build a tiny forest after hearing about this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hold in North America. He shared his vision withseniors in his class. The seniors researched tiny forests and made a proposal resulting in Clean Water Services donating 60 trees and $5,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Armed with these resources, Walsh and the students started working. “Something I didn't really expect was the outpouring of students' enthusiasm. Seeing students from all grades volunteered to contribute to the ‘dirty work’ really blew me away,” Walsh said.Senior Megan Cover has been at the school since the first grade. “I'll graduate after working on this project, which is surely sad, but it's really rewarding and great to be a part of this project and to do my bit. We're creating this educational space for many young kids,” Cover said.Walsh summed up his goal of the project, which is to build a place where students can enjoy and learn about nature. “The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it would deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation and trees when they look outside at the forest.”4.What is special about tiny forests?A.They originated in North America.B.They are usually planted in schools.C.They contain various types of trees.D.They become mature in a shorter time.5.What surprised Walsh in the process of planting the tiny forest?A.The abundance of native tree species.B. Public concern about the environment.C.The active participation of students.D.Support from local organizations.6.How does Megan Cover feel about the project?A.Proud. B.Hopeful.C.Excited. D.Grateful.7.What does Walsh want the forest to function as for the students?A.A source of enjoyment.B.A reminder.C.A source of inspiration.D.A witness.C[2024·唐山市模拟]Math anxiety is far from uncommon, but too often, those who fear the subject simply avoid it. Research from The University of Chicago offers evidence for the link between math anxiety and avoidance.Studying nearly 500 adults through a computer program called the ChooseAndSolve Task (CAST), the researchers gave participants a choice between math and word problems labeled “easy” and “hard”. The easy problems were always worth two cents, while the hard problems were worth up to six cents. They also informed participants the computer task would modify the questions in the process of testing based on their abilities, enabling them to handle about 70% of the hard problems.Although participants attempted hard word problems when promised higher monetary prizes, they rarely chose to do the same for math problems. “We found we couldn't even pay mathanxious individuals to do difficult math problems,” researcher Rozek says. The findings also contradict a widely held belief that feeling anxious about math and avoiding mathrelated problems is rooted in being bad at math. “If you take two students good at math, the mathanxious one will do worse at math than the one that isn't anxious.”Such a mentality does more than stopping people from taking calculus courses or pursuing a career in STEM. It can affect everyday interactions with math—like leaving a tip in a restaurant. But all is not lost. Reframing their anxiety from negative to positive cou ld help mathanxious people reengage. Giving those anxious about siting exams guidance may lead them to perform better. “Telling them if you're anxious, this is your body getting you ready to perform and focus,” Rozek says. Another path may be to create early positive experiences around math. For example, telling stories featuring math and tackling problems around the story may be helpful.8.What does the underlined word “modify” mean in Paragraph 2?A.Adjust. B.Design.C.Solve. D.Add.9.What does the study find?A.Math anxiety interacts with math avoidance.B.Word problems are often regarded as easier.C.Fear of math can outweigh higher rewards.D.People underrate their mathematical ability.10.What is a common misunderstanding about math anxiety?A.It is the cause of math avoidance.B.It causes people to be bored of math.C.It is a complex phenomenon in life.D.It results from poor math performance.11.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.Consequences of math avoidance.B.Ways to break the anx ietyavoidance link.C.Explanations for math anxiety.D.Mental barriers to mathematical achievements.D[2024·厦门市高三质量检测]The burning of coal may be falling out of favor as a means of generating heat and electricity, but that doesn't mean it no longer has valuable uses. The team of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is using coal for a new economy. The project is led by Associate Professor Andrea Fratalocchi. While reading about challenges of ending the use of coal in power generation, Fratalocchi was struck by a novel possible use for coal. “Why don't we use coal for seawater desalination (脱盐)?” Fratalocchi recalls, still excited. Capable of taking in sunlight, the black mineral adds to the list of substances in dark colors serving t he purpose, which the team is on a longstanding hunt for.Fratalocchi and his team began to explore the use of a material known ascarbonized compressed powder (压缩粉末), also CCP, which is created by breaking coal into powder, and then pressing that powder back into a solid that has more tiny holes—it can also be made into a desired shape. The team combined CCP with natural cotton fibers, producing a block which was then placed within a seawater containing container, with its bottom touching water surface. While sunlight heated the black surface of the block, the inside fibers helped water flow in and through the block from the bottom. When that liquid water reached the hot surface, it turned into steam which rose and condensed (冷凝) on the inside of a specially shaped cover. That condensation then flew down the cover and was collected as fresh, drinkable water. The seawater's salt content remained behind within the CCP. A simple wash was enough to remove most of it, so the material could be reused multiple times.KAUST has partnered with the Dutch startup PERA Complexity to promote the technology. The material will see its first use in a pilot plant in Brazil. “CCP is abundant in nature and reasonable to use, besides being lightweight and highly changeable,” says team member Marcella Bonifazi. “The device's desalination rate per unit of raw material is two to three times higher than that of any other solar desalination system, but it produces fresh water at around onethird the expense of current stateoftheart technologies.”12.What is Fratalocchi's team seeking for?A.Fibers functioning well with CCP.B.Green ways to desalinate seawater.C.Novel industrial applications of coal.D.Darkcolored materials for desalination.13.How did the team get water into the CCP device?A.By placing cotton fibers inside.B.By heating its black surface.C.By making the powder into a block.D.By installing a special cover.14.Which feature of CCP does Marcella Bonifazi stress?A.Being ecofriendly. B.Being lowcost.C.Being efficient. D.Being flexible.15.What does the text mainly talk about?A.Scientists have made a breakthrough in desalination.B.Coal finds new use in desalination technology.P is expected to be in reallife use soon.D.Drinkable water will be got from the sea.其次节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

刷题课时练10Ⅰ.阅读理解AI was recently asked what inspires me most. That was easy to answer: I_live_and_breathe_track_and_field. It is the only sport that has allowed me to spread my wings and truly fly. I have struggled a lot in my life after being diagnosed(诊断) with a learning disability at the age of three. I was also born four months too early, weighing less than four pounds. Even at 17, I'm still working to catch up. Mentally I'm on the level of a 12-year-old. I had to repeat the third and fifth grade, which caused me a lot of stress and embarrassment.I was joked so much that I would often hide in the bathroom instead of going to class. My parents always gave me lots of love and support, but I still felt worthless most of the time. I'm also quite shy, so making and keeping friends has always been a challenge. Then one day when I was 12, my life changed forever, My parents decided my younger brother and I should try track. From that moment on my life was different. I was a natural mid-distance runner. When I was on the track, the other kids just saw me and my speed. No one saw my learning disability. For the first time in my life I felt normal. When I entered high school, I joined the track team and the coach quickly saw my talent. I was selected to run on the A team for cross-county and the A team for indoor and outdoor track. I'm on the school team for the 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relays, and colleges are even interested in me!My cross-county team won the 2011 County and Regional Championship. When I accepted my award, my mom cried because she was so proud of me, and for once, I was proud of myself.Even though I'm a special-education student, I now know that my learning disability does not define(限定) me. I can hold my head up high because track has allowed me to spread my wings and truly fly!【语篇解读】作者是一个在学习上有障碍的学生,但是却在田径运动中找到了自己的价值。

And it seems that my friend is not the only one.Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t.In the World Book Day’s“Report on Guilty Secrets”,Dreams From My Fatheris at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied aboutreading, and as I’m not one to lie too often(I’d hate to be caught out),I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten.But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people,I have read the book at number one,George Orwell’s1984.I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it.It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen,CharlesDickens,Fyodor Dostoevsky(I haven’t read him,but haven’t lied about it either)and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to“impress”someone they were speaking to.This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth! 英语天天练5学生姓名_____________ 得分_____________I 阅读理解共8题;每小题2分,满分16分1Everyone hopes for happiness and satisfaction in life. However, life is short and changeable . It can be tough to all of us most of the time. So, how to live a peaceful life in contentment满足is a big issue worth thinking carefully.Have you ever noticed that the more you have, the more you want Let’s face it. Thinking our life is good enough doesn’t come naturally to many people. When we have high expectati ons of everything in life, we will run into disappointment. Only when we understand that needs are different from desires can we live with satisfaction. Here are a few ideas to help you be happier with what you have and who you are.Focus on what you are thankful for. Most people want things to be better than they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what we have. Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be. Focus on what you are thankful for. Write down 5 things you are grateful for right now. When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can damage our happiness really. Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up stopping them back from moving forward in a more positive manner. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those in the early days. Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger too. There’s a catch, of course. You have to liv e near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely稀疏地populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense. But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere. Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables光纤电缆promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.Still, the “last mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication, it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.5. The underlined part “ a catch” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.A. a rare challengeB. a desirable planC. an efficient deviceD. a hidden problem6. What can we know from the third paragraphA. It is very difficulty these days to find someone to come and fix your fridge, your TV set or your washing machine unless it breaks. One day, Mrs. White's washing machine stopped work, so she telephoned a shop. Three days late, a man came to see what was wrong with a washing machine. Therefore, Mrs. White was not very happy and said, "Well, you've finally arrived. I had called you three days ago." The man paid no attention to which she said. He just took a piece of paper out of his pocket and looked it. Then he said, "Oh, I've come to the wrong place. I'm looking for Mrs. Smith's house, not you. He stood out because the kids made fun of him. He was missing one of his fingers, and always pointed at students with his middle finger.I was not very good at English and math. No matter how hard I tried, I just could not know why I did not understand what all the other kids found so easy to learn. One day, I was told that if I got one more E on my report card, I would be taken to the “big prison for kids”.I tried really hard for weeks. In 2012, her eldest daughter died from a car accident in Kansas City, Missouri. Last year, the single mother lost her job because of the economic depression. She had only $ 7 in her pocket as she headed into the grocery store one day last July with her 12yearold daughter, Rakiya Edmondson. And then Lady Luck cut__them__some__slack. Sims and her daughter found a dollar bill in the parking lot. Maybe this was their day, they told each other. So, they bought a lottery ticket—and won $ 100.But before they could spend their bonus, Rakiya had an idea. The news in Kansas City that week had been filled with stories about a police officer, Tyler Moss, who had been seriously injured in the line of duty. He was in critical condition.Rakiya and her mother had never forgotten how kind the police had been after their ownfamily member died.“The police were really there for us,”Sims said.“They came to see my kids. They were fathers, friends, and therapists.” Rakiya wanted to give their lottery winnings to Officer Moss's family. Her mom readily agreed. On July 10, Sims called the police and made an unidentified donation. Moved by her generous expression of thanks, the officers did what they could do best—they tracked Sims down. When she explained the family's motivation, the officers could hardly believe it.“Given her current financial hardship,we encouraged her to keep the money,”the department later explained.“She refused, saying the officer's family needed it and the police needed to know they were supported.”By then, that feeling of support was shared. The police set up a GoFundMe page for Sims, whom they described as“The Woman with the Heart of Gold”. Their goal was $10,000. As of January 11,2021, they received $165,405. What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here's what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:“It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson:“Wal king is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens:“If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and perish (死亡).”Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and producing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside—compared with on a treadmill (跑步机)—produces the most novel and highestquality ideas. The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking is triggered (触发) by physical movement, which is exactly why walking—with your dog, a friend, or alone—feeds creative thinking. The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with a walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a treefilled neigh borhood. You can walk through a park and observe people joking or birds singing. Being inside, you're more likely to be lifeless, which means you don't have enough energy to wonder or create things. So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move, etc.8.How does the author introduce the topic?A.By providing background.B.By borrowing phrases from great minds.C.By giving definition.D.By presenting wellknown examples.9.The underlined word in Paragraph 4 means something ________.A.causing a changeB.stopping progressC.drawing attentionD.interrupting creativity10.What can we learn from the passage?A.Nature exploration improves fitness.B.Walking on a treadmill brings more energy.C.Working indoors makes people less creative.D.Familiar surroundings encourage novel ideas.11.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Exercise in Nature.B.Train Your Brain.C.Develop Your Creativity.D.Walk for Wonder.D[2022·厦门市高三质量检测]It's midFebruary and along Britain's south coast gilthead bream (鲷鱼) are swimming from the open sea into the river mouths. And this summer, countryside visitors throughout southern England will catch sight of blue flashes as small redeyed damselflies fly across starry ponds. Both events are happening much further north than they would have 20 years ago.Fingers point at climate change. As areas become too hot or dry, many wildlife populations are declining, while some species are showing up in places that were historically too cold or wet.Our team, led by Alba Estrada, wanted to explain this phenomenon. If we couldpredict which species can and can't colonise (大批生长) new locations, we could decide which are most in need of conservation. How far individual animals or plant seeds can move was long thought to be the most important factor. But according to our findings, other characteristics also turned out to be highly important. For example, how quickly plants and animals can produce, how well they can compete with other species for resources, and what kinds of food they can eat or habitat they can live in.The result of this is that we might be able to predict which animals will survive under climate change. The wood mouse is found throughout continental Europe. As climate changes, we think the mouse will move north because it can breed quickly, live in lots of habitats, has a broad diet, and individuals can travel a long way. And consider the European ground squirrel. We think it might stay just in southeast Europe because it can only live in grasslands and climate change won't suddenly turn farms and forests into meadows (草地).It's encouraging to know that some species are doing well under climate change. There are some headaches, however. Those gilthead bream are feeding on the local shellfish, which might be taking food away from the native fish. Small redeyed damselflies look great, but they could become all too common around British ponds and outcompete native species. Climate change is once again posing us some tricky conservation questions.12.We can learn from Paragraph 1 & Paragraph 2 that ________.A.people hold events to observe different speciesB.visitors have damaged the homes of many speciesC.species preferred extremely cold and wet environmentD.climate change makes some species move to new areas13.What's Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.What factors can influence colonisation.B.How far individual animals can travel.C.Why some species are declining.D.Where most species tend to live.14.Which might stand the least chance of colonisation?A.Gilthead bream.B.Redeyed damselflies.C.Wood mice.D.Ground squirrels.15.What's the team's attitude towards the colonisation?A.Ambiguous. B.Doubtful.C.Objective. D.Optimistic.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
