As I entered the classroom, the drumming stopped. “Good morning, Miss,” they tried to sound happy to see me; their faces were delighted but I knew this was not for me.“What are you all doing?”“Nothing, Miss,” Guilty eyes stared back at me.They pulled out books and sat and waited, but that_thing I had seen in their faces, that thing I had so hoped to bring with my teaching, that thing was slipping away now as they got ready for class.“Nothing? You were doing something. What?”There was quiet and I realized they thought I was angry. Eventually one of them said,“Columbus Day, Miss. You know, the day Columbus reached Trinidad with his ships. We are acting the Columbus Day play.”“Wait, you mean the same Columbus in the history? Christopher Columbus?”“Yes, Miss.”“But...well, we did that chapter in the book. You didn't answer my questions.”I felt my h eart pounding hard, “Open the book, come, quick,” I was excited now. “Okay, so who is taking part in the play? Come to the front. Let's act out this play.”“Miss, you said to open the book. We're not going to read?”“I will read, you will act and you will drum and you will see how the chapter and the play work together.”The students stared at me as if I were crazy.“Miss, for real? Yes, for real!” Had I hit upon something here? There was something I hadn't seen before—these faces—excited, smiling, alive. These faces were what I dreamed of! One week ago I gave the students the same questions on Columbus that few had passed the first time and this time more than half the class passed! From this experience, I came to recognize that books are enough for some students, but for others life, as they know, has little to do with what's in the book unless they see a correlation.1.What were the students doing when the author got closer to the classroom?A. Instead it was a collection of independent states, known as ‘city states’ because each one was run by a central city such as Florence. Some were small; some were large. Most states had their own government, laws and money. During the Middle Ages, five city states became very rich and powerful. For example, Venice became rich from its trade with the Far East, the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe. Banks in Florence lent money to businesses and governments all over Europe. There was great competition between the city states—which led to regular wars—and between the families which ruled them. The most famous member of the family was Lorenzo de' Medici who ruled the city between 1469 and 1492.The other powerful people who had influence in Florence were the members of the guilds(行业协会). Craftsmen such as carpenters each had their own guild. If you were a member of a guild and over 25 years old then you could be involved in governing the city. The rulers of Florence wanted their city to be impressive and famous. The Medici collected books and built a huge library to house them. They spent money on renovating(修复) old buildings and putting up new ones. They built a splendid palace and employed painters and sculptors to decorate it. Some of the best and most famous artists were brought to work in Florence.4.What do we know about the city states?A. She came to this country with her family on a tiny ship during World War Ⅰ when she was only 8 years old. During the trip she survived stormy seas, little food, and an attack by a German U-boat. After getting here, her large family worked hard to build a new life in America. They never had much money but were rich in love. One day, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my parents and brothers went on a trip. It was just me and Nanny in the house for the weekend. Nanny seemed so happy to be taking care of me all by herself. She made me a special breakfast that first morning. However, all I could do was complain about how the food was not how Mom always made it. Nanny quietly put down the plate and went into the living room.I followed a minute later and saw that she had tears in her eyes. It was the firsttime I had ever seen my strong and proud grandmother cry and I was the one who had caused it.I walked over to Nanny, climbed on her lap, and for the first time in my short life I did something else too. I apologized without being told to and asked Nanny to forgive me. She smiled, rubbed my head, and told me I was a good boy even though I didn't feel like one then. That memory just like my Nanny's love will stay in my heart forever. It is a sign of both strength and wisdom. Asking for forgiveness helps us to learn, to grow, and to love.4.Nanny's family immigrated to America mainly because ________.A. they suffered starvation in their homelandB. they wanted to start a rich life in the new landC. they tried to get away from the terrible climateD. their country was in war and they needed peace5.The boy complained to Nanny that the food ________.A. wasn't cooked the way his Mom didB. was served a bit later than usualC. was prepared in a special wayD. was just to his parents' taste6.When seeing Nanny crying in the living room, the author felt ________.A. surprisedB. ashamedC. shockedD. annoyed7.The author mainly wants to tell us that ________.A. forgiveness can be beneficial to people asking for itB. hardships can make children more indifferentC. grandparents are more tolerant than their grandchildrenD. family ties can sometimes be misusedC(2017·大连双基测试)Only after the repairman handed me the bill and waved goodbye—for the third time in six months—did I finally acknowledge the painful truth: our 20-year-old clothes dryer was busted.I turned to Tom, my husband. “He says we're throwing good money after bad,”I sighed. “I think he's right.”“I'm going to miss that guy,” said Tom. “When do you want to go shopping for a new one?”“Let me think about it.”I glanced out of the window, appreciating the sunlight dancing on the big-leaf maples in our backyard. Perfect drying weather. Suddenly, I thought of my mother hanging the laundry on the clothesline during my childhood.“You know, we have all the things a dryer can give us right in the backyard: plenty of warmth, clean and fresh air, and lots of branches to hang clothes on,”I said.“And it would help with the rising electric bill,” noted Tom.And so it began: after the wash cycle, we decorated the maples with damp blue jeans, shirts, socks, and towels. In fact, there was a secret pleasure in hanging the laundry outdoors. It was the perfect excuse to get up from the computer. While checking on the laundry in the backyard, I could listen to squirrels talking in trees, observe a family of wild turkeys by the road. I'd return to my desk refreshed. And, except for the sandpaper texture(质地) of sun-dried bath towels, the drying method was a complete success. But as autumn approached, I'd evaluate the day's drying potential. One morning I saw rain clouds ready to burst. I had a load of wet clothes in my arms and no place to put them.I called my husband. Together we hung the laundry throughout the house. Then my husband gave me a hug and a smile. “I think it's time to buy a dryer,” he said. “Like today.”“Good idea,” I said, just as the rain was on the way.8.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 1 ?A. Go and get a dryer.B. Reuse the old dryer.C. Hang wet clothes at home.D. Most importantly, it is not overdeveloped and crowded. Here, you can still hear birds singing rather than the blare from the loudspeakers. In short, the place has all the elements of a typical Chinese traditional painting—hills, bamboo, lakes, historic sites and fresh air—which cannot be done justice by a mere painting.Mount Mogan is the most well-known in the county, but Deqing has other spots worth visiting. The Xiazhu Lake and its wetland is a must-see, a good place for summer hikes or boating trips. The lake, the fifth largest in the province, has hundreds of small hidden or visible islands and wild reed patches, which divide the water into convoluted mazes, making the lake a huge labyrinth (迷宫) which only veteran boatmen can navigate. The wetland is home to various wild birds, animals and fish. The lake is best viewed on a slightly rainy day, when it is as peaceful as a huge mirror, until lighted upon by one or two birds flying over your head, singing as if complaining that your presence has disturbed the perfect picture. The ancient town of Xinshi is a picture-perfect East China water town. The place used to be an important dock, home to busy trade and transportation. For hundreds of years, local residents built houses along the river, giving birth to exquisite architecture such as Ming-and-Qing-style houses, temples and stone bridges.People who like village life but are unwilling to endure its deprivations can stay in yangjiale, luxury resorts and hotels developed by foreigners such as Le Passage Mohkan Shan and Naked Retreats. Here you can enjoy the county life and the first bird singing in the early morning along with modern facilities to keep you fresh and comfortable.12.What could be the best title for this passage?A. Enjoying the county lifeB. Exploring the charms of DeqingC. Some popular vacation spotsD. Deqing was rated the most livable city13.According to the passage, why can Deqing County quickly grow into a popular vacation spot?A. Because it's remote and well-protected and has rich cultural heritage.B. Because you can enjoy the county life and the first bird singing in the early morning.C. Because the place has all the elements of a typical Chinese traditional painting.D. Because it's located in the core area of the Yangtze River Delta and neighboring Hangzhou.14.The underlined word “exquisite” in the passage most probably means “________”.A. domesticB. originalC. residentialD. beautiful15.The Xiazhu Lake is best visited ________.A. on quite sunny daysB. on slightly rainy daysC. on cloudy daysD. on windy daysA 基础达标练Ⅰ.单句语法填空1.解析:句意:成都有很多新的百万富翁、亚洲最大的建筑和奢华的新酒店。

The first is the continuing increase in game birds released into the environment, now well over 50 million a year. It is ecologically naive to think that you can introduce this amount of biomass(生物量) —of a similar magnitude to the biomass of all the wild birds in the countryside—without any impact on native species populations and food webs,” he says. “Secondly, there is a marked increase in the intensity of management on some driven grouse moors in the uplands, especially in England. As many of us know, our uplands are some of the most iconic landscapes, both for services they give people—such as water and a carbon store—and for wildlife.”Clarke highlights the extent of the practice of heather (a plant) burning on grouse moors, widely used to increase the number of red grouse available for recreational shooting. He also draws attention to the plight (困境) of the hen harrier, a species now absent from vast areas of English uplands. The disappearance of five male hen harriers in unusual circumstances earlier this year has led to investigations by several police authorities.“While the RSPB does not support current calls for a ban on driven grouse shooting, the longer it takes any industry to address its problems, the stronger those calls will become,” Clarke says.5.According to Dr Mike Clarke, the shooting industry ________.A. must stop releasing birds for shootingB. puts too much strain on countrysideC. shouldn't join in the “Glorious Twelfth”D. needn't consider its impacts on wildlife6.What's the author's attitude towards the continuing increase in game birds?A. Critical.B. Indifferent.C. Unbelievable.D. Understandable.7.What could be learned from the text?A. The hen harrier is in danger of extinction.B. The RSPB calls for a ban on driven grouse shooting.C. Red grouse is specially kept for fun shooting.D. There's less intensive management on grouse moors in England.Ⅱ.七选五(2017·漳州八校2月联考)__1__ You probably think you will never be a top student. Over more than thirty years, the researchers caught and measured nearly 2,000 birds. In years when the snowmelt had arrived particularly early, the birds were likely to be smaller and have shorter bills(鸟嘴).The birds leave the coast of Western Africa, where they winter, and fly northtoward Russia with no clue as to what the weather is like there. The birds are supposed to arrive in spring, so they can lay their eggs and when their chicks hatch out, there will be a wealth of arthropod(节肢动物) insects to feed their young. But even though the red knots are advancing their arrival date by about a quarterof a day per year, it is not enough to keep up with the snowmelt. And in years whenthe snowmelt arrives early, the arthropods reach the greatest quantity before thebirds need them. Therefore, chicks miss out on eating well and they grow up to besmaller and have shorter bills.Being smaller and having a shorter bill isn't a problem in Russia—but it isin Africa. There, adult birds feed on thin-shelled bivalves(双壳贝类), Loripes lucinalis. But the bivalves are buried deep. However, other options, Dosinia isocardia bivalves and seagrass rhizomes(根茎), which only the youngest birds rely on, are not abundant or nutritious.Van Gils and his colleagues found that, in their first year, shorter-billed red knots don't survive as well in Africa. “A few short-billed birds make it,” van Gils says, “but the majority of birds that survive are the long-billed birds.”1.Jan van Gils and his colleagues reached the conclusion by ________.A. comparing red knots with other birdsB. dividing 2,000 red knots into several groupsC. watching and examining red knots for three decadesD. analyzing studies that have been published in Science2.What influence does early snowmelt have on red knots?A. They arrive in Russia half a day earlier each year.3.Few adult short-billed red knots survive in Africa because ________.A. they can't find arthropod insects to eatB. they can't access Loripes lucinalis bivalvesC. the Dosinia isocardia bivalves they need are rareD. the seagrass rhizomes they feed on are not nutritious4.What's the purpose of the text?A. To tell a story.B. To provide facts.C. To make an announcement.D. To put forward suggestions.BIBM and Local Motors introduced a new self-driving electric vehicle called“Olli” in National Harbor, Maryland. The car—really, a small bus—is capable of transporting 12 people at once. It uses IBM's “Watson”system, pulling vast amounts of data on its surroundings from a variety of sources. For example, if you use the car enough it could eventually figure out your general path to work every morning. If you're running late one day—or Watson uses weather data to figure out that it's about to rain, or that traffic will get worse—Olli might tell you there's no time for coffee. Ask it when you'll arrive at yourdestination and it can answer. The vehicle will be available to the public in National Harbor at “select times” this summer. Later this year, it will be used in Florida's Miami-Dade County and Las Vegas.Much h as been said about Google's driverless car prototype(模型)—but Jay Rogers, CEO of Local Motors, a small experimental car maker, says there's a problem withthe Google's business model.“Google doesn't make c ars,” he explained. While that's not strictly true—the company does have its own self-driving car prototype—Google is working with traditional automakers like Fiat Chrysler to get its vehicles on public roads. But driverless cars aren't legal in every state. “A company like Fiat Chrysler won't put out vehicles they can't sell everywhere,”Rogers said.Rogers believes Local Motors is nimble enough to be an industry leader. Thecompany designed Olli in 2015 and officially approved the project this March. Three months later, with IBM, they have a working vehicle in Maryland. We're a long way away from having Olli everywhere, of course, but Rogers saysLocal Motors' major problem is legislation, not technology. They're already equipped to produce and deliver the cars wherever there's demand—though it's a small company, so don't expect too many of them.5.What's Olli's major feature?A. It is an electric vehicle.B. It doesn't need a driver.C. It can take 12 people at once.D. It can communicate with passengers.6.What does Rogers think of Google's driverless cars?A. They will be Olli's strong competitors.B. They can't be driven on public roads.C. They have a big technical problem.D. They won't be mass produced.7.What does the underlined word “nimble” in the text mean?A. Able to adapt easily.B. Able to act quickly.C. Fully developed.D. Highly creative.8.Why will Olli not appear in great numbers?A. Because it is still in the testing stage.B. Because many people can't afford to buy it.C. Because Local Motors has low productivity.D. Because driverless cars are not legal in America.Ⅱ.七选五If you are in a crowd, the first and most important thing is to make yourselffamiliar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. __1__Make yourself aware of the type of ground you are standing on, and knowthat in a crowd of moving people wet or uneven ground can be slippery or hazardous, causing you to fall.__2__ When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving youthe possibility of taking advantage of the escape route.

In a university, a European and a one-eyed man walked along a one-way road with a useful tool. This is a usual thing. 在一所大学里,一个欧洲人和一个一只眼的人拿着一件有用的工具沿着一条单行道走着。

这是一件平常之事。

An hour ago, an honest man accepted an unusual gift and went to finish an honorable task.一小时前,一个诚实的人接受了一件非同寻常的礼物,去完成一项光荣的任务。

2. 不定冠词a/an用在单数可数名词前表示泛指,泛指某一人或某一物。

The "Chinese Dream"is a dream to improve people’s well-being and a dream of harmony, peace and development."中国梦"是一个改善民生的梦,是一个和谐、和平和发展的梦。
