It has a widespread but patchy discussion in eastern Australia and is characterized by low population densities (Henry & Craig, 1984, Kavanagh 1984). Relatively little research has been centered on the feeding behavior of this species because of difficulty in its detection and capture (Craig& Belcher 1980).One study (Wakefield, 1970) concluded that while yellow-bellied gliders obtain sap from the “V”-shaped incisions they make in the trunks of various species of eucalypt arthropods comprise the bulk of their diet. This conclusion, however, was based on limited feeding observation and irregular occurrence of these “sap-site” trees.Other studies conducted analysis on faecal samples from north Queensland and Victoria respectively (Smith and Russell, 1982; Henry and Craig, 1984; and Craig 1985) to determinefeeding behavior. These studies found the presence of arthropods, eucalypt sap, nectar and honeydew. However, as insect and plant exudates and almost totally digested and leave little trace in the faeces, other indicators must be used to infer their use (Smith & Russell 1982). Bark, for example, is used as an indicator of eucalypt sap. Faecal analysis, therefore, doesn‟t allow a precise determination of the relative important of each of the separate dietary items.Qualitative observations of feeding behavior in gliders have also been carried out (Henry and Craig, 1984; Craig, 1985; Kavanagh and Rohan-Jones, 1982; and Kavanagh 1987 a, b).In these studies each observation is scored equal, regardless of duration, thus these data indicate only the presence or absence of food items in the diet, not their relative use. A study employing the use of timed (i.e. quantitative) feeding observations is necessary to give a better resolution of the species‟dietary requirements.This study aims at achieving this by addressing the following question:are different food resources exploited in different proportions throughout the year?[范例B]工程(Engineering)Advanced ceramic materials such as zirconia have great potential as substitutes for traditional material in many engineering applications;however, a number of problems have thus far restricted their use by engineers. Two of the major problems are difficulties in producing products of reliable and consistent quality and high cost of manufacture.Difficulties in achieving reliable and consistent quality stem largely from problems associated with handling and forming of fine ceramic powders, and from the formation of thermal gradients that often occurs during conventional sintering processes. Advances in powder processing of ceramic powders are helping to overcome the first of these problems, but only slow, controlled heating and cooling rates have been used to solve the problem of formation of thermal gradients. While this solution facilities the manufacture of high quality components, it does so at the expense of the production rate, and deterioration of the mechanical prosperities of ceramic because of an increase in gain size. The solution is thus one that achieves quality at the expense of an economical rate.To date, this slow, controlled heating has been achieved with the use of techniques incorporating high temperature sintering for lengthy periods in conventional furnaces, or through exposure to high temperatures and pressures in processes such as hot pressing. Such processes require expensive capital equipment, use large amounts of energy, and are capable of only relatively low production rates. Processes involving temperatures above 1700C are particularly costly.Recently, interest has been growing in alternative sintering techniques that could overcome this problem.One of the most promising is the use of microwaves to sinter ceramic compacts. Microwave sintering has many attractive features, including rapid volumetric heating and low cost. The equipment for microwave sintering is also less costly than that required for conventional processes and requires less maintenance. With energy savings calculated from 25 to 95 %, and higher production rates, this process is commercially attractive. Microwave sintering may haveother advantages as well, as there is some evidence that the mechanical prosperities of microwave-sintered ceramics are superior to those of conventionally-sintered ceramics. The superiority is largely attributed to the smaller grain sizes resulting from the short and rapid sintering cycle.Until now, there is no report of any systematic study of microstructure produced by microwaving sintering, or their relationship to the proprieties of the sintered products, The aim of this project was to develop a simple technique for microwaving sintering of yttria zirconia, and to compare the resultant prosperities and microstructure with material sintered by conventional constant heating rate processes.The relationships between density and grain size were studied in order to determine whether microwave heating altered the densification/ gain growth relationship. Such a change would indicate a change in the predominant mechanism of mass transfer. The effects of heating rate and yttria content were also investigated.[范例C]文学(Literature)Title: The Perils of Privacy:Thwarted Sexuality in D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner"D. H. Lawrence is one of the most paradoxical figures of twentieth-century English literature.On the one hand,his works were frequently met with critical outrage that sometimes expressed itself in official government censorship. His novel The Rainbow (1915), for instance, was declared obscene by the British authorities, as was his later Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928). And, needless to say, Lawrence often found it difficult to find publishers willing to risk their reputations by issuing the work of this too-explicit writer from the Nottingham coalfields.On the other hand, Lawrence's writing is often described as moralistic, even preachy--hardly the sort of literature that would ordinarily call forth this kind of critical venom. Lawrence's chief concern is with the "rights" and "wrongs" of human behavior. His narratives sometimes take on a kind of mythic quality, as though he were striving to produce not just moving stories but exemplary stories--stories whose characters illustrate modes of coping with such common human dilemmas as a shortage of money, a sense of social class, and (most prominently and controversially) the confused sexuality of the contemporary family.Many of these themes are brought together in his short story,"The Rocking-Horse Winner.” In this story, the actions of the main character, Paul, illustrate the tragic consequences of a secretive, private sexuality.[范例D]文学(Literature)Title: Archetypes in Ernest Hemingway’s worksIn much of historical and modern literature, authors have employed symbols to emphasize character and plot, and to explain theme. At this stage, however, detailed descriptions are necessary to gain a proper understanding not only of each particular hypertext, but also of ways in which we can broaden our general understanding of non-fiction hypertexts.In my attempt to contribute to the beginning development of methods to analyze hypertexts, I have focused especially on the structure of the hypertexts I have read. I have found that drawing thorough maps of the whole or parts of the hypertext is of great help in understanding the texts structure, and that these structures are often reflected in the layout of each page. It would be interesting to do more work on other hypertexts, investigating different types of possible structures and their relationships to the content of the hypertext.I have also focused on the links in each hypertext, devising a system for describing them inspired by Burbules‟ article (Burbules 1998), seeing links as related to rhetorical fig ures. I sketched a possible taxonomy of implicit links, which could be developed further by examining other hypertexts.In the analysis of "E-Literacies" I found a particular rhetorical figure, only possible in ergodic texts, that I called the ergodic dialogue. Identifying rhetorical strategies special to hypertext and other ergodic texts is pioneer work that may prove to be useful in future analysis of other hypertexts.Each of the hypertexts I have studied has given me new ideas for the analysis of all three texts.Yet this study only compares three texts in detail. As more hypertexts are read and interpreted in detail, we will learn more ways to analyze, and to write, new hypertexts.I have defined the hypertexts I have interpreted as "non-fiction", yet as I have shown, they share many structural features with fictional hypertexts. Can these three hypertexts be said to belong to different genres, or even to a more general genre of non-fiction hypertext?A possible answer to that question has emerged from my discovery that some hypertexts that at first seem structureless, such as "Singing", are constructed in a way that in effect forces the reader to read thoroughly instead of skimming.The conflict between surfing and reading carefully has escalated with the tremendous growth of Web hypertexts. This conflict has probably existed since print technology made it easy to find specific information in a book, by means of indexing, standardized layouts, page numbers etc. As Nielsen demonstrates, most web hypert exts aren‟t read word by word, they are scanned. This is exactly the opposite of what the study of literature is about: we read texts carefully and put a great deal of thought into how and what we write about them. We don‟t want our readers to skim carelessly through our texts, but hope that they will read and consider our work thoroughly.As I discussed in the chapter on "Structures of hypertext," most web hypertexts are designed to allow and indeed encourage easy surfing. They have a quickly scannable structure which makes it easy to find specific information. However, hypertexts can be structured with quite the opposite goal. "E-Literacies" and "Singing" are examples of hypertexts that are not primarily informative; instead they are argumentative and interpretative. They are structured accordingly, breaking many of the rules Nielsen sets out for good, scannable web sites (Nielsen 1997). They don‟t use highlighted keywords (other than in the hypertext links), there are few bulleted lists, they do notuse the inverted pyramid style and they have a good deal more than half the word count of conventional writing. Instead, these hypertexts use a hierarchical structure to prevent careless surfing, demanding to be read thoroughly or not at all.Birkerts is concerned that hypertext is reductive, as I discussed on chapter 3 that o versimplification is indeed likely to be the result of writing for people who don‟t read, but scan. Many of Nielsen‟s recommendations remind me of the style we find in tabloid journalism, for instance, using the inverted pyramid and frequent subtitles. However, hypertext that is written to be read rather than scanned needs not be reductive at all. A hypertext such as "Singing" is in fact less scannable than a conventionally printed, linear close reading of a film sequence or other text would be.Rather than seeing the nature of printed texts as different from the nature of hypertexts, it could be more interesting to think of all the texts as belonging somewhere on the continuum from scanning to reading.It would be intriguing to see a comparative analysis of a linear and a hypertextual close reading, and perhaps also of a scannable and informative linear text and a hypertext at the other end of the continuum.An important topic that I have barely touched upon in this thesis is the many types of writing about literature on the Web that are not hypertexts. There are of course many conventional linear documents that are published on the Web, but what‟s more interesting is the collective forms of writing. The Republic of Pemberley, which I discussed briefly on page 54, stands as an emblem of a new species of literary discourse. The dozen or more discussion groups, the online though written chats about literature, the home-grown sequels to classics and the group readings of novels form a collective interpretation which is very different from the individually authored hypertexts I have studied here.This collective literary discourse is also presented in pedagogically controlled environments such as Dreistadt, a MOO where lecturers and students meet and discuss German language, culture and literature (Jopp et.al. 1998). The group discussions about literature in this MOO are preserved as written yet spontaneous dialogues, a development of a form of scholarly writing that has been rarely seen since Plato‟s dialogues.These collective critical discourses may become more important, or at least more dominant on the Web, than hypertexts like the ones I have read in this thesis. This collective literary discourse can also be seen as an opposite to the "easy scanning" mentality that appears in most Web sites. The high degree of participation, or of true agency to borrow Janet Murray‟s concept (Murray 1997), is very different from the undemanding surfing that Nielsen‟s recommendations encourage. In contrast to the ergodic dialogue I found in "E-Literacies", the dialogue in Pemberley and Dreistadt is real.Electronic texts are the latest development in the last 20,000 years of writing. Hypertext and other electronic discourse set a challenge to scholars of literature.How shall we read these texts? How can we write about them? And how do we write them? This thesis is an attempt to come to gripswith these questions. I have found some answers.
