ABefore I had my son, I spent two years working with children with disabilities.I learned that shouting and threats of punishment would result in a disaster. Coming up against their behaviour could only make the job harder and their behaviour more extreme. I found something that worked, though. There was a very naughty boy in the nursery and a teacher who was generally very confident with the children was asked to take charge of him. One day the boy joined a session in the room next to mine. His appearance created an atmosphere of tension. He spent the entire session running around ,hitting and kicking, and destroying property.I was in the craft room working with some other children when my co-worker told me that this boy's teacher was in tears, and could not get control of the situation. As we were talking, the boy ran in. I told my co-worker that I would take care of him.I closed the door. He was full of energy, throwing things around and makinga huge mess. But I could see that he was doing all these to annoy me. He needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then he slowed down and began making a rocket. I talked to him about it. We continued like this for a few minutes before Islipped into the conversation:"So what happened today?"It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed. He told me that the teacher didn't let him do what he knew well due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making her run around and saw it as a game. I explained that his teacher had not seen it as a game and was very upset. This again was stated simply as a fact. I suggested that next time he had a session, he talk about what he hoped to do at the start, which might be easier for everyone. He agreed and was quiet for a moment. Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes before quietly asking if he could go to find his teacher to apologize.1. The boy made trouble for his teacher because he_______________A. was accused of destroying propertyB. was told not to yell at other childrenC. was made to do things against his willD. was blamed for creating an air of tension2. Why didn't the author do anything about the boy's bad behavior at first?A. She didn't want to make it worse.B. She didn't mind the huge mess at all.C. She was tired of shouting and threats.D. She hadn't thought of a coping strategy.3. The author managed to get the boy to talk to her by____________________A. playing games with himB. giving him a good suggestionC. describing his teacher's feelingsD. avoiding making critical remarks4. Why did the boy have tears in his eyes in the end?A. He was sorry about his reputation.B. He was regretful about his behavior.C. He was fearful of the author's warning.D. He was sad for the author's misunderstanding.BLondon's newest skyscraper (摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres , it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like aspire(尖顶). He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren't regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts(桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began, a lot of people didn't want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. TheEgyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics don't like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.5. London's newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of_______.A. its costB. its sizeC. its shapeD. its height6. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to __________.A. change London's skylineB. inherit London's traditionC. imitate the Egyptian styleD. attract potential visitors7. The critics who refer to social division think Shard ________.A. is only preferred by the richB. is intended for wealthy peopleC. is far away from the poor areaD. is popular only with Londoners8. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. The Shard: Cheers and ClapsB. The Shard: Work of a Great ArchitectC. The Shard: New Symbol of London?D. The Shard. The one who has patience to listen to others.D. The one who can use English to communicateDWorking with a group of baboons(狒狒) in the Namibian desert, Dr. Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology, Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food ,hidden in a box. Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task, while others had to learn for themselves. To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were, Dr. Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake. She found that personality had a major impact on learning. The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did. In effect, despite being made aware of what to do, they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.The same held true for anxious baboons compared with calm ones. The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not, even though they spent more time watching. This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals, something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things. The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (知的) tasks not because they aren't clever enough to solve them, but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they don't associate with the knowledgeable individuals, or they are too shy to use the information once they have it, information may not travel between all group members, preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning. w W w .第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)There is an English saying:" 16 " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 17Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects tophysical exercise. 18 If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs .The group that tolerated(忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 1920 They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.A. Laughter can prolong one's life.B. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh.C. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.D. It increases blood pressure, the heart heating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet.E. Although laughter" helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put this theory into clinic practice.F. Laughter is the best medicine.G. Where students go to school touches many aspects of their lives, from academic studies to social activities and beyond. Considering the importance of this decision, prospective students should think carefully about their options. Follow these steps to help you make a college decision. Develop your short list.A lot of thought should go into developing a short list of schools you would like to attend. Brennan Barnard and Rick Clark, authors of “The Truth About College Admission: A Family Guide to Getting In and Staying Together,” urge students to think about location, enrollment size (招生规模) , majors and programs, the people on campus, opportunities outside of the classroom, cost and selectivity when crafting a list. Revisit schools.Once applications are in, it's time to think hard about where you want to attend, which may lead another visit. While you should have gotten a feel for campus life during initial college tours, take another trip to each school and come up with a list of 10 to 15 detailed questions, says Bob Roth, author of several books on college success. Know what to ask on a college visit, and don't leave with any questions unanswered. Meeting with current students is another way to measure campus culture, as they can provide insight about social activities and classroom experiences for certain majors. But taking a campus tour can be expensive, considering travel costs. If a return trip is out of the question, take a second look at the campus via a virtual tour and reach out to college officials or students with any follow-up questions. Compare financial aid awards. If you're looking to graduate from college with little or no debt, carefully compare financial aid packages. It's wise to look beyond the tuition and see what additional costs apply, like housing and meal plans. Understand the difference between free money-such as grants (补助金) and scholarships —and loans, which you'll have to pay back eventually. Some colleges offer generous financial aid packages meeting full financial need, meaning those students are not required to take out loans. Communicate with family. Many parents have fond memories of their college campus and want their children to share that same experience. But what was the best fit for a parent, may not be the best fit for the student. Create an open dialogue during the decision-making process. Give your parents reasons as to whyyou want to attend a particular college, like an interest in a specific academic program or study abroad opportunity.36.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A.The list of colleges you would like to attend should be as short as possible.B.There are many factors to consider before choosing a college.C.You should list as many schools as possible before choosing a college.D.The most important thing to consider when choosing a college is the location. 37.According to Paragraph 3, why do you need to visit the schools again?A.Because a virtual tour to the campus is always less convenient than a physical visit.B.Because it is good to get to know more current students before school starts.C.Because the cost of taking a campus tour is not as expensive as you think.D.Because you need to know more about these schools before making a final decision. 38.What does the author suggest about financial aid awards?A.You don't need to worry about the cost of rent and food.B.You need to know what money you need to pay back and what you don't.C.All you need to consider when choosing a college is the cost of tuition.D.It's unwise to choose a college whose financial aid package covers all financial needs. 39.According to Paragraph 5, which of the following may NOT be a reason for parents to let students choose the college they attended?A.They have had an investment in the college.B.They had met very good professors at that college.C.The college has a beautiful view.D.The college has friendly staff.40.What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?A.To draw student's attention to college life.B.To help students find the right college.C.To provide students with access to college.D.To share his experience on selecting college. The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned, pot-bellied coal stove (煤炉) . A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived. One morning they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed in flames (被火焰吞没) . They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to a nearby county hospital. His mother was told that he was sure to die. Even if he were to survive, he would be a cripple (瘸子) throughout his life. But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be a cripple. Much to be the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just dangled (悬荡) there, lifeless. Ultimately he was released from the hospital. But his determination to walk was as strong as ever. At home, when he was not in bed, he was limited to a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then stake by stake, he began dragging himself along the fence, and decided that he would walk. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron persistence and his resolute determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk slowly, then to walk by himself and then to run. He began to walk to school, then run to school, to run for the sheer joy of running. Later in college he made the track team.In February 1934, in New York City's famed Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run-this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.41.Why did the little boy go to school early every day?A.To decorate the classroom.B.To clean the classroom.C.To light the stove.D.To give teachers and classmates a surprise. 42.What can be concluded from Paragraph 2?A.The little boy was badly burned.B.The little boy lost the lower part of his body.C.The little boy was crippled.D.The little boy's mother was sure he was going to die.43.What problem did the little boy face when he left hospital?A.He didn't have long to live.B.He might never walk again.C.He had no motor ability.D.He lost his legs.44.How did the little boy walk again?A.By throwing himself from the wheelchair.B.By climbing on the fence.C.By pulling himself along the fence each day.D.By joining the track team.45.Dr. Glenn Cunningham's 1934 race result wasA.depressing.B.challenging C.promising D.impressiveMany animals and plants are endangered in the world today. These endangered species are threatened with becoming extinct, meaning they will no longer exist on Earth. Examples include the Cuban Macaw and the Sri Lankan Legume Tree. Hunting, and collecting of the Macaw bird for pets, led to its extinction. Whilst the main reason the native Sri Lankan Legume Tree went extinct was due to habitat loss from development in the 20h century. The main cause for animals and plants disappearing is often a disruption (扰乱) to the food chain due to hunting, habitat loss or even the introduction of invasive (入侵的) species.Every living thing from one-celled animals to a blue whale needs to eat. Nature is connected and controlled by many fragile (脆弱的) food chains. A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat. When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present — for example, a species goes extinct — the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapsed.Humans can have disastrous effects on food chains. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home countries to the places they explored and settled in. They did not realise the consequences of introducing invasive species. By doing so, they were disrupting the natural food chains of the areas they explored.Nowadays there are strict rules controlling the movement of animals and plants between countries. But some parts of the world are still experiencing problems with invasive species introduced hundreds of years ago. With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to thrive. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.46.What could be inferred from Paragraph 1?A.Macaws are extinct because of habitat lossB.Sri Lankan Legume Tree became extinct because of seed collecting.C.The invasive species may lead to the extinction of the native species.D.The main cause of plants extinction is hunting.47.What can we learn about food chain from Paragraph 2?A.It only affects one-celled animals.B.It decides the balance of the whole system.C.It is always broken by invasive species.D.It is controlled by fragile nature. 48.According to Paragraph 3, how did humans affect food chains in areas they explored?A.By settling in.B.By taking away native species.C.By hunting local animals.D.By introducing foreign species.49.The underlined word “thrive” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.A.to continue to live or existB.to grow toward full stature or physical or mental maturityC.to become, and continue to be, successful, strong, healthy, etc.D.to get away from an unpleasant or dangerous situation50.According to the author, which of the following is correct?A.The food chain will always find a way to be balanced.B.The natural world experiences times of damage but it always can recover.C.Human activity, in all forms, tends to cause great destruction to the natural world.D.Despite the climate change caused by humans, plants and animals will go extinct naturally.Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest place on Earth. It's also the driest. With annual rainfall close to zero, Antarctica is technically a desert. Covering about 14 million square kilometers around the South Pole, it is the fifth largest continent in the world. A high mountain range, the Trans-Antarctic range, runs from east to west, cutting the continent in two. There are volcanoes too, but they are not very active. Antarctica holds 90% of the world's ice, and most of its fresh water (70%) is in a frozen state, of course. 98% of the surface is covered permanently in the ice cap. On average it is two kilometers thick, but in some places it reaches a depth of five kilometers. Strong winds driven by gravity blow from the pole to the coastline, while other winds blow round the coast. It is difficult to imagine a more inhospitable (不宜居的) place.Yet Antarctica is full of wildlife, which has adapted to its extreme conditions. There are different types of penguins, flying birds, seals, and whales. But the long Antarctic winter night, which lasts for 182 days (the longest period of continuous darkness on earth) , as well as the extreme cold and lack of rainfall, means that few types of plants can survive there. Only two types of flowering plants are found, while there are no trees on the large continent. The rest of the plants are made up of mosses, algae and lichen. Some forms of algae have adapted to grow on ice. Most of the ice has been there for thousands of years. As a result, it has become a window on the past, and can give researchers lots of useful information. Gases and minerals, in the form of volcanic dust trapped in the ice, can tell us a lot about what the world's climate was like in past ages. Antarctic rocks are also very important for research. Most of them are meteorites (陨石) from outer space. One rock, known as the “Alien” rock, may contain evidence of extra-terrestrial (外星人) life.Antarctica was the last continent to be discovered. But more than two thousand years ago Greek geographers believed that there was a large land mass in the south which balanced the land in the north. They called it Anti-Arktikos, or Antarctica: the opposite of Arctic (北极) . When Europeans discovered the continent of America in 15 century, the great age of exploration began. However, progress to the South Pole was slow. Not until the late 18h century did the British explorer James Cook cross the Antarctic Circle, but he never saw land. Then in 1895, a Norwegian called Carstens Borchgrevink became the first man to set foot on the Antarctic mainland. The race to the pole had begun. It was finally reached on 11th December, 1911 by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.51.In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to _________.A.tell us about the history of the discovery of AntarcticaB.tell us that Antarctica is completely covered in thick iceC.introduce the distribution of fresh water in AntarcticaD.introduce the basic information about Antarctica52.What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 2?A.All Antarctic plants grow on ice.B.Animals can't survive the Antarctic polar night.C.Antarctica has a great variety of plants.D.Despite the extreme conditions in Antarctica, many plants and animals live there. 53.What does the author intend to show with the example of the “Alien (外星人) ” rock?A.There are aliens in Antarctica.B.Meteorites all contain evidence of alienexistence.C.There's a lot to study in Antarctica.D.Rocks are rare in Antarctica.54.What could we learn from the last paragraph?A.The Greek geographers found the Antarctica.B.James Cook was the first explorer who reached the South Pole.C.A Norwegian reached the South Pole first.D.Humans first set foot on the Antarctic mainland in 1911.55.What makes the best title for the passage?A.A Race to the South Pole B.Antarctica: the Last ContinentC.The wildlife of Antarctica D.Antarctica: A desert阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Surprisingly, my father was so easily taken in. He was worried and asked me to lie down and have a good rest. He even took out a rope to make my bed a swing. He shook the swing gently, reading my favorite storybook to coax me to sleep. Having finished one storybook, he went out to fetch another. What a good chance! I sprang from the bed and began to play on the swing. I was playing so happily that I didn’t even notice that my father had already come in. Though he stood there, staring at me SILENTLY, I quickly carried my schoolbag and ran to school.I once wondered why my wise father could be taken in by my stupid lie. Now I know that was all because father loved me so deeply. Father seldom says “I love you〞 to me, but I can always feel his love, heavy and silent.听力原文Text 1:W: As you can see from the photo, the living room has one door into the dining room, another into the kitchen and a third to the outside.M: But the door into the kitchen isn't big enough, is it?Text 2:W: May I make a recommendation, sir? Our seafood with this special sauce is very good.M: Er .... Thank you, but my doctor said I can't have shellfish.Text 3:M: I'm thinking about going out for a bite tonight. Any suggestions, Liz?W: Well, how about the French restaurant near the KFC? Frankly, I've had enough of our canteen food.Text 4:W: Would you like to come to Susan's birthday party tomorrow evening?M: I'm going to give a lecture tomorrow. I wish I could be in two places at the same time.Text 5:M: Listen to me. Take a bus to Miami, and it's cheaper than going by train. W: That's true. But I'd rather pay a little more for the added comfort and convenience.Text 6:W: Oh, dear, that's the fifth job I haven't got today. They weren't interested in my shorthand and typing speed. They just kept saying they wanted someone with experience.M: Don't let it get you down. I went to at least ten interviews before I got my job.I couldn't believe it when that girl at the job center rang to tell me I'd got this job with the recording company.W: I wish I had. They turned me down, remember?M: It was just a bit of luck, really.W: Well. I'm not lucky like you. I'm sick of looking for a job.M: Oh, something will turn up, you'll see. I felt just like you do.W: I feel like giving the whole thing up and living on social security.M: Don't give up now. It'll work out.Text 7:M: What kind of books do you like to read?W: Oh, I read to relax, so I enjoy learning about other countries I might visit one day. I don't like reading anything too heavy or serious, unless it's about animals or the environment. I'm not really into sports very much.M: Anything else?W: Well, I do like entertaining people at home ... you know, having dinner parties, so I suppose I'll be borrowing some cookbooks. The pictures in those books always make me hungry, although they never seem to turn out exactly as they look in the books.M: Right. I think that's all I need now, except I need you to sign here on the application form. Oh, the membership fee is $20.W: Here you are.M: Thank you. You can borrow books now if you want, although your membership card won't be ready until next Monday.Text 8:W: So how is your work?M: I'm going to resign. A few of the new staff have already left. Obviously a lot of similar jobs pay much better salaries.W: But your company is huge. Can't they afford to pay the staff decent wages? M: We have a policy of paying according to the years of working in the company. So new employees get quite low salaries no matter how excellent they have done. W: That's so shortsighted. By the time the workers are experienced and contributing they're likely to go.M: That's why I'm going to leave.W: But you already work there for 5 years.M: I'm worried about my future. I believe that companies as big as it is can only continue to grow by taking care of their staff.W: Well, the management doesn't think that way. Anyway, you have to think about that twice before you act.M: Thank you. I will.Text 9:W: Hey, welcome back! It’s nice to have you home again.M: Thanks Mom. It’s nice to see you, too.W: Aunt Vickie will be coming over for dinner tonight. She’s excited to see you again.M: Well, I guess it’s been five years since I saw her. Wow, what have you done to the house?W: I’ve had a lot of changes made in the four months you’ve been away at university.I had all the walls repainted on the main floor and in the bedrooms upstairs. M: Well, it looks fresh and new. I like it.W: Oh, I’m glad you think so. Your father didn’t like it at all. He was complaining about the color — he just wanted to keep the walls white.M: But these walls are just a very light yellow. The color isn’t too bright or anything.W: I know! I guess he just doesn’t like change.M: What about the bedrooms?W: They’ve been painted a very light blue color except your sister’s room — she wanted a very light orange color.M: And what about this painting hanging on the wall?W: Oh, that’s by my friend Kate. She’s an artist. She painted it just three months ago.Text 10:We all know that there are various kinds of jobs in the world, but what kind of job do you like? Because different people are attracted by different jobs, everyone has his own interest. What’s your favorite job? I always ask myself this question. In the past, I was not satisfied with my job, so I often felt unhappy. After deep thought, I decided to change that situation. Fortunately, I was able to find my ideal job. Now I’d like to tell you something about my story.I used to be the manager of a large finance company. I had a really good salary, nice house, big car, all those things. But I was just working all the time, and I never saw my wife, or had any time for my great passion — cooking. So about three years ago, I left my job, and my wife and I opened a small restaurant. I did all the cooking at first, and it was very hard work. But then we started to make some money, and we got a chef, and it was easier. Nowadays, I decide the menus, and I go to the market every day, to get fresh vegetables, fish and sometimes I do some cooking. We’re ce rtainly not as rich as we were, and we worked long hours, but I think we’re much happier. Maybe next year we’ll have a holiday — our first one in three years!励志赠言经典语录精选句;挥动**,放飞梦想。

Even the most ordinary objects can present to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually ____25____ (make) them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique about this shoe is ____26___ it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there ____27___ (be) not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved out of ice? Or did she throw away goods that she didn't need in order to travel____28____(light)?Over 100, 000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure ____29____ the cold weather. The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks each ____30____ (weigh) up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must____31____ (be) a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made____32____ to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.(B)An old friendship had grown cold. Where once there had been closeness, there was only strain. Now pride kept me from picking up the phone. Then one day I dropped in on another old friend, who’s had a long career as a minister and counselor. We were seated in hisstudy----surrounded by maybe a thousand books and fell into deep conversation about everything from small computers to the tormented life of Beethoven. The subject finally turned to friendship and____33____ perishable it seems to be these days. I mentioned my own experience as an example. “Relationships are mysteries,” my friend said. “Some endure.____34____ fall apart.”Gazing out his window to the wooded Vermont hills, he pointed toward a neighboring farm, “Used to be a large barn over there.” Next to a red-frame house were the footings of ____35____ had been a sizable structure.“It was solidly built, probably in the 1870s. But like so many of the places around here, it went down because people left for richer lands in the Midwest. No one took care of the barn. Its roof needed ____36____(patch); rainwater got under the eaves and dripped down inside the posts and beams.”One day a high wind came along, and the whole barn began to tremble. “You could hear this creaking, first, like old sailing-ship timbers, and then a sharp series of cracks and a tremendous roaring sound. Suddenly it was a heap of scrap lumber.”“After the storm blew over, I went down and saw these beautiful, old oak timbers, solid as could be. I asked the fellow who owns the place what had happened. He said he figured the rainwater____37____(settle)in the pinholes, where wooden dowels held the joints together. Once those pins were rotted, there was nothing to link the giant beams together.”We both gazed down the hill. Now all that was left of the barn was its cellar and its border of lilac shrubs. My friend said he had turned the incident over and over in his mind, and finally came to recognize some parallels between building a friendship: _______ ___38___ _______ strong you are, how notable your attainments, you have enduring significance only in your relationship to others.“To make your life a sound structure that will serve others and fulfill your own potential,” he said, “you have to remember that strength, however massive, can’t endure ___39___ it has the interlocking support of others. Go it al one and you’ll inevitably tumble.”“Relationships have to be cared for,” he added, “like the roof of a barn. Letters unwritten, thanks unsaid, confidences violated, quarrels unsettled-----all this acts like rainwater seeping into the pegs, weakening the li nk between the beams.”My friend shook his head. “It was _____40____ good barn. And it would have taken little to keep it in good repair. Now it will probably never be rebuilt.”Later that afternoon I got ready to leave. “You wouldn’t like to borrow my pho ne to make a call, I don’t suppose?” he asked.“Yes.” I said, “I think I would. Very much.”Section BDirections: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)As a young child I never really thought about my parents' lives in Irvine, how small their world must have seemed, never extending beyond the Dragon Cafe. Every day my parents did the same jobs in the restaurant.I watched the same customers come for meals, for morning coffee, for afternoon soft drinks and French fries. For my parents one day was like the next. They settled into an uneasy and distant relationship with each other. Their love, their tenderness, they gave to me.But my life was changing. I became taller and bigger, my second teethgrew in white and straight. At school I began to learn about my adopted country. I spoke English like a native, without a trace of an accent.I played, thought, and dreamed in the language of our Irvine neighbors.A few years later and I would no longer remember a time when I didn't speak their words and read their books. But my father and Uncle Yat still spoke the same halting English. My mother spoke only a few words.I began to translate conversations they had with the customers, switching between English and Chinese. Whenever I stepped outside the restaurant it seemed I was entering a world unknown to my family: school, church, friends' houses, the town beyond Main Street. I found it hard to imagine a year without winter any more, a home other than Irvine. For my mother, though, home would always be China. In Irvine she lived among strangers, unable to speak their language. Whenever she talked about happy times, they were during her childhood in that distant land. A wistful smile would soften her face as she told me about sleeping and playing with her sister in the attic above her parents' bedroom. She once showed me a piece of jade-green silk cloth that was frayed and worn around the edge. In the center was a white lotus floating in varying shades of blue water, the embroidery so fine that when I held it at arm's length the petals looked real. I had been helping her store away my summer clothes in the brown leather suitcase from Hong Kong when I noticed a piece of shiny material in the corner and asked her what it was. She took it out and spread it on her lap. "My mother embroidered this herself. I was going to have it made into a cushion, but then my life changed and over here there seems to be no place for lovely things. It's all I have that reminds me of her," she said. "Maybe, Su-Jen, one day you will do something with it." I admired the cloth some more, then she carefully folded it and stored it back in her suitcase. There was so little left from her old life. She said it was so long ago that sometimes it felt as if it had never happened. But she described her life with such clarity and vividness that I knew all those memories lived on inside her. There was so little in this new country that gave her pleasure. The good things she found were related in some way to China: an aria from a Chinese opera, a letter from a relative back home or from Aunt Hai-Lan in Toronto, written in Chinese, a familiar-looking script that I couldn't read and that had nothing to do with my life in Canada. There were times when I felt _________about my own happiness in Irvine. We had come to Canada because of me, but I was the only one who had found a home.66.The primary purpose of the second paragraph is to ________________.A. provide insight into the motivations of the narrator's parents and uncleB. recapture the pleasure the narrator experienced in learning a new languageC. emphasize the extent of the transformation the narrator undergoesD. describe the complex interrelationships in the narrator's family 67.The writer’s mother's memories of China are portrayed as__________________.A. distant yet enduringB. occasional yet overwhelmingC. lively but confusedD. wistful and indistinct68. Fill in the blank of the last paragraph with one of the following words that best fit the context and the theme.A. confusedB. exhilaratedC. concernedD. guilty69. Which of the following best characterizes the narrator's development over the course of the passage?A. She grows apart from the cultural tradition of her parents.B. She overcomes the fear she felt about the new land.C. She begins to view the inhabitants of Irvine from her mother's perspective.D. She becomes less and less interested in hermother's stories.(B)Good news travelers! Well-known travel guide publisher Lonely Planet has issued its top 10 cities to visit in 2015. A Voyage to the Moon, often cited as the first science fiction story, was written by Cyrano de Bergerac in 1649. Cyrano was dead and buried for a good three centuries before the first manned rockets started to fly.In 1961, when President Kennedy declared that America would send a man to the moon by the decade's end, those words, too, had a dreamlike quality. They resonated with optimism and ambition in much the same way as the most famous dream speech of all, delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. two years later. By the end of the decade, both visions had yielded concrete results and transformed American society. And yet in many ways the two dreams ended up at odds with each other. The fight for racial and economic equality is intensely pragmatic (讲求实用的)and immediate in its impact. The urge to explore space is just the opposite. It is figuratively and literally otherworldly in its aims. When the dust settled, the space dreamers lost out. There was no grand follow-up to the Apollo missions. The technologically compromised space shuttle program has just come to an end, with no successor. The perpetual argument is that funds are tight, that we have more pressing problems here on Earth. Amid the current concerns about the federal deficit, reaching toward the stars seems a dispensable luxury—as if saving one-thousandth of a single year’s budget would solve our problems. But human ingenuity struggles on. NASA is developing a series of robotic probes that will get the most bang from a buck. They will serve as modern Magellans, mapping out the solar system for whatever explorers follow, whether man or machine. On the flip side, companies like Virgin Galactic are plotting a bottom-up assault on the space dream by making it a reality to the public. Private spaceflight could lie within reach of rich civilians in a few years. Another decade or two and it could go mainstream. The space dreamers end up benefiting all of us—-not just because of the way they expand human knowledge, or because of the spin-off technologies they produce, but because the two types of dreams feed off each other. Both Martin Luther King and John Kennedy appealed to the idea that humans can transcend what were once considered inherent limitations. Today we face seeming challenges in energy, the environment, health care. Tomorrow we will transcend these as well, and the dreamers will deserve a lot of the credit. The more evidence we collect that our species is capable of greatness, the more we will actually achieve it.73. The author mentions Cyrano de Bergerac in order to showthat_____________.A. imagination is the mother of inventionB. ingenuity is essential for science fiction writersC. it takes patience for humans to realize their dreamsD. dreamers have always been interested in science fiction74. How did the general public view Kennedy’s space exploration plan?A. It symbolized the American dream.B. It was as urgent as racial equality.C. It sounded very much like a dream.D. It made an ancient dream come true.75. What does the author say about America's aim to explore space? A. It may not bring about immediate economic gains.B. It cannot be realized without technological innovation.C. It will not help the realization of racial and economic equality.D. It cannot be achieved without a good knowledge of the other worlds.76. Which of the following is the closest to the underlined phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph?A. supportB. contradictC. weakenD. substitute for77. What is the author’s attitude toward space programs?A. Critical.B. Reserved.C. Unbiased.D. Supportive.Section CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Oil is the substance that lubricates(起润滑剂作用) the world's economy. Because so many of our modern technologies and services depend on oil, nations, corporations, and institutions that control the trade in oil exercise extraordinary power. The "energy crisis" of 1973-1974 in the United States demonstrated how the price of oil can affect US government policies and the energy-using.By 1973, domestic US sources of oil were peaking, and the nation was importing more of its oil, depending on a constant flow from abroad to keep cars on the road and machines running. In addition, at that time a greater percentage of homes and electrical plants were run on petroleum than today. Then, in 1973, the predominant Arab nations of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) resolved to stop selling oil to the United States. The move was prompted by OPEC's desire to raise prices by restricting supply and by its opposition to US support of Israel in the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War. The embargo (禁运) created panic in the West and caused oil prices to shoot up. Short-term oil shortage drove American consumers to wait in long lines at gas pumps. In response to the embargo, the US government enforced a series of policies designed to reduce reliance on foreign oil. These included developing additional domestic sources (such as those on Alaska's North Slope), resuming extraction at sites that had been shut down because of cost inefficiency, capping the price that domestic producers could charge for oil, and beginning to import oil from a greater diversity of nations. The government also established a stockpile (贮存) of oil as a short-term buffer (缓冲) against future shortages. Stored underground in large salt caves in Louisiana, this stockpile is called the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and currently contains over 600 million barrels of oil, roughly equivalent to one month's supply. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)78. We learn from the passage that in today's world, whoever dominatesthe oil market will be able to ____________________.79. What were the immediate consequences of OPEC's embargo?80. Over the years before the OPEC's embargo, America had dependedheavily on ________.81. How many measures did the US government adopt to cope with OPEC'sembargo according to the passage?第二卷(共47分)I. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.AGrowing up in the 80s as a child with lots of siblings, I played in the street until dark or until we were called for dinner. We had an amazing community of neighbours. However, one elderly neighbour hated us. Every time the football went into her garden, she would confiscate it – and then pop the ball. When she collected over 20 deflated footballs, she would take them down to the police station and complain. To her, at least, free and active children were a pest and a disgrace.Actually, at that time, nothing but one stopped us playing: the shattering of a window and the scream of a parent coming outside to tell us off. On reflection, I was probably part of the last generation of children to play outside regularly. Now in London, the estate I live in is covered with historic signs saying: “No ball games”.The signs function as a play ban for children. Even during the summer, there are only a couple of rebels who dare to play football on the street. They get my nod and a kick of the ball back when it comes in my direction. The problem is, many people don’t know that these signs are not enforceable by law: they are simply a request from local housing associations.Of course, if people are kicking the ball against someone’s house or out on the streets making noise late at night, it would be considered criminal damage and antisocial behaviour – and quite right. But most of the time the signs are just preventing children from playing. The London Sport charity has recommended that these signs are removed. I agree - let’s burn them all. But I do think it is simplistic to imagine banning the signs will combat a national obesity epidemic. The Active Lives Survey shows that just 47% of children in England are getting the recommended 60 minutes or more of sport and physical activit y a day. Removing “No ball games” signs doesn’t mean that the other 53% of children will feel motivated to venture outside and play. The Active Lives Survey also suggests that boys are more likely to be active than girls. Perhaps boys are still given more activity opportunities. The Lionesses(英格兰女足)win at the Euros football tournament highlighted the lack of opportunities for girls in football and inequitable sports curriculums in schools.Children and young people of black, Asian and other minority ethnicities are least likely to be active. Perhaps because racism in sport is alive and kickingIn addition, access to sport and physical activity is a social justice issue that depends on location and financial circumstances. For a child from an economically disadvantaged background, who lives in a high-rise flat with little green space around, the costs and practicalities of participating in sport are prohibitive. For example, a weekend tennis court costs anywhere between 10 and 27, without travel or equipment. So, while we can burn all the “No ball games” signs in the country, the real barrier to combating low activity levels in children is socialinequality. What really needs to happen to get our children moving What does the underlined word “confiscate” in Par agraph 1 mean in the contextA. Collect something as a hobbyB. Take something away as a punishmentC. Destroy something due to being annoyedD. Remove and make something disappearWhy does the author believe that removing "No ball games" signs may not effectively combat low activity levels in childrenA. Because children prefer indoor activities.B. Because boys are more active than girls.C. Because access to physical activity is influenced by social inequality.D. Because of the lack of interest in sports among children. What conclusion does the author draw regarding the relationship between "No ball games" signs and low activity levels in children A. Removing the signs will directly address the issue of low activity levels.B. Social inequality is the primary barrier to increasing children's activity levels.C. Boys are more likely to play sports than girls due to cultural biases.D. Racism in sports is a significant factor in preventing children from being active. What is the main idea of the passageA. The author reminisces about their childhood and the changes in outdoor play.B. The ineffectiveness of "No ball games" signs in encouraging physical activity among children.C. The impact of social inequality on children's access to physical activity.D. The author's support for removing "No ball games" signs but recognition of deeper issues.BFrom a distance, the grey cement bridge looks unremarkable. Two tunnels on either side of the Trans-Canada Highway are insemi-circles that end bluntly on the pavement below. But on top, away from passing motorists’ eyes, lies a grassy oasis. Against the odds, pine trees and wildflowers have taken root here, giving the overpass a fringe of greenery. On the edges, wire fencing provides safe passage for wandering animals.Tony Clevenger has dedicated much of his life to studying the performance of Banff’s wildlife crossing structures. When the first wildlife bridges went up, Clevenger, a researcher with the WesternTransportation Institute, was living in Canmore, and recalls the distinctly negative atmosphere that surrounded what many saw as a hair-brained scheme by Parks Canada. Save for a few small crossings in the eastern United States, no one had ever attempted something like this before — and no one believed it would work. Editorials in the local paper scoffed at the “waste of taxpayers’ money” and confidently stated animals would never use the $2 million to $3 million man-made bridges. Others believed wolves would herd their prey into the fence, violently killing them before shocked tourists.“This project started in a bad spot. There was a lot of opposition and criticism,” Clevenger says. “It took several years of good data, publishing in scientific peer-reviewed journals, to change people’s minds.”Clevenger now has 17 years-worth of data proving the efficacy of the crossings. Among large carnivores, mortality (死亡) rates are 50 to 100 per cent lower along sections of the highway where overpasses and underpasses exist. In those same sections, mortality rates for elk are almost zero, compared to 100 elk-vehicle collisions per year in the mid-1990s. Clevenger’s research has shown that 11 species of large mammals in Banff have used the structures more than 200,000 times, including unexpected species such as red fox, hoary marmot, boreal toads, wolverines, lynx, garter snakes and beavers. In 2014, a Montana State University study found that not only are grizzly bears using the crossing structures, but the structures are also helping to maintain genetically healthy populations among the bears that use them. Grizzlies were crossing with enough frequency to ensure populations on either side of the highway weren’t genetically isolated from each other.“This is Canada’s biggest conservation success story —it’s the largest highwa y mitigation complex in the world,” says Clevenger. “You won’t find anything anywhere else in the world close to what we have. We have the most overpasses in one localized area and almost half of all the overpasses in North America.”Why did Tony Clevenger face opposition and criticism at the beginning of the wildlife crossing projectA. Because of disbelief regarding the project's feasibility and effectiveness.B. Due to the design flaws of the crossing structures.C. Because of concerns about the environmental impact of the structures.D. Due to insufficient funding for the project.Which unexpected species have been observed using the wildlifecrossing structures in BanffA. Grizzly bears and elk.B. Wolves and red foxes.C. Garter snakes and beavers.D. Hoary marmots and wolverines. How did a Montana State University study contribute to the understanding of wildlife crossings in BanffA. It confirmed the disbelief surrounding the effectiveness of the crossings.B. It identified design flaws in the crossing structures.C. It criticized the Canadian government's conservation efforts.D. It provided evidence of grizzly bears using the crossings and maintaining genetically healthy populations.CBoth my parents worked for 30-plus years for their employers –they had lifelong careers at a single company. Growing up, they taught me the importance of “loyalty” and “commitment”.But in a rapidly changing world, the concept of a job for life has become as rare as a dial-up internet connection. This shift from stable, long-term employment and single-employer careers to a world where frequent job changes are the norm comes directly from globalisation, rapid technological advancements and the changing ideas about work.Globalisation has turned the world economy into a giant, interconnected web. This has made job markets fiercely competitive and talent and opportunities in the labour market more diverse and digitally accessible.Jobs can be widely publicised and explored online and are no longer tied to your city of birth. Add to this the rapid technological progress. We now live in a world where the skills you learned yesterday might not be enough for today’s job market. The job market is transforming, with new careers emerging as automation and artificial intelligence (AI) advances. Risks and price policies can be efficiently assessed using AI, making insurance underwriters redundant while advanced software in banking and finance mean data analysis can be automated.Online booking has reduced demand for travel agents and desktop publishers are being replaced by user-friendly software, which allows people to create their own materials. These changes highlight the need for professionals to update their skills and adapt to a technologically evolving job market. As a result, career paths have become fluid and multi-directional. It’s no longer just about climbing the corporate ladder and getting a regular paycheck; it’s about exploring different paths, switching jobs and industries and sometimes even venturing into freelancing and the gig economy.Loyalty is defined as an employee’s commitment to their organisation and its goals. It means a willingness to put in extra effort and to uphold the company’s values and objectives. Loyal workers often identify strongly with their workplace, are reliable and view the organisation positively, even during tough times. When long-term employees change workplaces, it does not mean they are disloyal. It signifies a change in priorities and a redefined loyalty bond. Employees are loyal to their employer and its interests while working there. But they also seek mutual growth and expect to be recognised and rewarded.Career paths are now a kaleidoscope (万花筒) of experiences and opportunities. Instead of a career identity being about a company brand, it is about skills, experiences and the meaningfulness of the work. This transformation means career decision-making is more intricate, considering personal aspirations, market trends and family considerations. What factors have contributed to the shift in job market dynamicsA. Increased reliance on desktop publishing software.B. Changing ideas about loyalty and commitment.C. The decreasing demand for travel agents due to online booking systems.D. Globalization, rapid technological advancements, and evolvingwork concepts. What skills are highlighted as essential for professionals in the evolving job marketA. Skills related to desktop publishing.B. Skills that were relevant yesterday.C. Skills in data analysis and adaptability.D. Skills in insurance underwriting. How does the passage suggest employees should approach loyalty in the modern workplaceA. By remaining with a single employer for their entire career.B. By prioritizing personal growth and recognition.C. By relying on traditional definitions of loyalty.D. By avoiding job changes to maintain loyalty. The best title for the passage is _______.A. Forget About a Job for Life.B. Learn More as Much as You CanC. Benefit from Long-term Employment.D. The Impact of Globalization.Section CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. This recurrent nature provides astronomers with some predictability regarding its eruptions, aiding in their monitoring and preparation for the upcoming event. The mechanism driving these eruptions is the transfer of matter from the red giant to the white dwarf. It consists of a white dwarf and an aging red giant star. This heightened visibility will last for a few days without the need for any equipment and slightly over a week with the aid of binoculars. Astronomers plan to utilize various instruments, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, to observe and study the nova in different wavelengths of light. However, during its peak brightness, it is expected to shine as brightly as Polaris, or the North Star, making it visible to observers in the Northern Hemisphere.Astronomers are eagerly anticipating a celestial (天体的) event that promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime sight: the appearance of a "new star" in the night sky, expected to occur sometime between now and September, as reported by NASA. This event, known as a nova (新星), is projected to take place within the T Coronae Borealis system, nestled in the constellation (星座) Corona Borealis, situated between the Bo tes and Hercules constellations. In contrast to the explosive demise of a massive star seen in a supernova, a nova is characterized by a sudden, brief explosion。

about my new favorite thing. It's an app that my husband told me a few years ago that helps me bypass all the obstacles(障碍)in my way:potholes, heavy traffic, and even speed cameras. To be honest, when my husband first told me about it,I didn't pay much attention.I was only going to places I already knew how to get to.Plus,I learned to drive from my father-who never turned to a map.I think I mistakenly absorbed the message that real drivers didn't need a map;you somehow just magically knew where to go.It was only later that I realized that just getting a driver's license didn't mean you knew how to get to places-that was lesson one.Lesson two came when my kids started playing on two different travel teams. The drivers in our household suddenly had the need to head in different directions on the same day.Suddenly my app became very meaningful to me.How did I ever manage to get to strange playing fields hidden somewhere without it?But the crazy thing I have also noticed is how often I just don't listen to it.Why might that be?Do I just prefer the old routes, even if they are actually worse?I see an analogy(类比)to the present moment. There is evidence that some old ideas and some long familiar ideas will send us into a boring unchanging lifestyle. But for some reason we like them better than an unfamiliar new route that might take us into areas we've never heard of,let alone visited. It can be hard to admit we don't know everything. As a person who still drives an8-year-old stick shift and who has never stood in line for anything new,1certainly understand that. But I also try to remember thetimes I Jet goof my ego(自负),or my fear and learned that life could be better. Not perfect-but better.I am glad I finally listened to my husband about that app.He was right.4.What did the author think of the app at the very beginning?A.It was magical.B.It was practically valueless.C.It was powerful.D.It was not as good as a map.5.What would probably make the author ignore the app's instructions?A.Her desire to explore alone.B.Her doubt about the new device.C.Her preference for the new routes.D.Her refusal to experience changes.6.What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph?A.She is willing to challenge herself.B.She cares little about others'comments.C.She recognizes her problems easily.D.She is too inflexible to make any change.7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Real Drivers Know Their WayB.It Pays to Take a New RouteC.New Apps Make Life PerfectD.It Matters to Listen to Inner Voice阅读理解Researchers set up an experiment in which5-year-olds were tested with their fellows under different circumstances of transparency(透明)and different audiences. They set up a sticker machine that in some settings was transparent, and other settings in which only the giver of stickers knew how many stickers he could give. They had children give out stickers in both settings. The results were striking:children were consistently generous only when the receiver and audience of the stickers were fully aware of the donation options.Children were notably ungenerous when the receiver of stickers couldn't see the options. The researchers said,"Children only showed consistently pro-social behavior in our study in thecondition when they could see the receiver and their allocations(分配物)were fully visible;in all other conditions, children were statistically ungenerous, giving the receiver the smaller amount of stickers."They made the conclusions that at a very early age, children are learning how to position themselves socially.Well before they apprehend the sociology of their networks and what social reputation really means, they think strategically about giving as a function of how they can gain a reputation with a peer as a generous citizen or pro-social agent when the receiver observes them.Children change their behavior in response to having an audience.Help children give to others in full view, delivering meals to families, and in private, dropping off treats or surprises for those who need support without signing their names. Also, children should be reminded that thank-you notes are lovely but unnecessary to receive. When we give gifts or lend help to others, try to help children remember why-to provide something for another. It really doesn't have to be recognized. When a thank-you card doesn't come, it doesn't make a gift any less valuable or meaningful for those who were lucky enough to receive. 8.What did the researchers discover?A.The givers'behavior greatly inspired the receivers to help in return.B.The children gave out an equal number of stickers in both settings.C.The presence of an audience affected children's decisions to give.D.Donating helped children to become more generous in the future.9.Which is pro-social behavior according to the researchers?A.Observing the givers.B.Donating more stickers.C.Gaining a reputation.D.Receiving more allocations.10.What does the underlined word"apprehend"in Paragraph3mean?A.Share.B.Predict.C.Confirm.D.Understand. 11.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A.To suggest recognizing others'kindness.B.To acknowledge the giver's contribution.C.To confirm the benefits of being grateful.D.To advise inspiring generosity in children.阅读理解In a new finding that goes against current conservation patterns,re-introducing wolves and other predators(捕食者)to our landscapes does not amazingly reduce deer populations, restore worseningecosystems or significantly threaten livestock(家禽),according to a new study."The hopes and fears that we have on both sides of the debate-neither are realized,"said conservation biologist Bernd Blossey, professor of natural resources and the environment at Cornell University. On the one hand, there is little evidence for claims that re-introducing large predators such as wolves, bears and mountain lions is a major threat to livestock and wild animals such as white-tailed deer and mule deer. When the wolf was taken off the endangered species list, hunters and livestock producers, and some state governments, called for action to safeguard the wildlife they wanted to hunt and the livestock that was their livelihood. But it is nearly impossible to independently evaluate those claims,Blossey said.Other factors also kill livestock, from lightning strikes to extreme weather and diseases. On the other hand, the claim that wolves and other predators can control deer populations and restore worsening ecosystems lacks evidence as well."Meaningfully reducing deer populations in Wisconsin alone would require tens of thousands of wolves, which is ecologically and socially impossible,"said Blossey. And wolves alone can't repair the ecological damage humans have done,he said.A popular video"How wolves change rivers,"which has been viewed more than43million times, suggests that the re-introduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park benefited the entire ecosystem."I was as fooled like everybody else by the lovely stories that came out of Yellowstone saying, you bring wolves back, and you restore the rivers, and everything's satisfactory,"said Blossey. We should see large predators like wolves as a valuable part ecological communities in their own right, Blossey said, and not just for their function."As long as people learn to live with and tolerate the new(old)neighbors,a careful but not fully conflict-free existence appears possible,"said Blossey.12.Which of the following does Blossey probably agree with?A.The loss of livestock may not necessarily be due to wolves.B.People should not take wolves off the endangered species list.C.People should take action to protect livestock and wild animals.D.The threat to predators comes from climate change and diseases.13.Which word best describes Blossey's attitude to the video"How wolves change rivers"? A.Tolerant.B.Unclear.C.Doubtful.D.Favorable 14.What does Bernd Blossey say about large predators in the last paragraph?A.They upset the balance of the ecosystem.B.They should rightfully stay in their habitats.C.They are key to restoring the environment.D.They change people's view about rewilding.15.What is the text mainly about?A.The value of humans'living together with animals.B.The importance of restoring worsening ecosystems.C.A debate over the threat to livestock and wild animals.D.A clarification of the effects of bringing back the wolves.二、阅读,第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
