My father raised chickens and ran a construction company. I was barely10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility (责任) of feeding the chickens and cleaning up the stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was 22, I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace, I washed dishes and cooked from 4: 00 pm to 9: 00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasn’t long before I became known as a singing cook. I had been rejected so many times by record companies that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night, a woman executive (懂事) from a company named Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over, we sat down and talked and after she left, I said to myself it was one more rejection. A few weeks later, my manager received a phone call — Warner Brothers wanted to sign me to a record deal. Soon after, I released my first record in June 1986. It sold over 2 million copies. My best efforts had gone into every job I’ve ever hel d. It was the sense of responsibility that made me feel like a man. Knowing that I had done my best filled me with pride. I still feel that way today, even though I have become a well-known singer.46. Why was the writer once known as the singing cook?A. Because he was a cook at a country-music club.B. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves. How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they’ll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.〞From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will letyou know how far you can go.Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he’s really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it’s time for you to change the subject. Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occ asion of parting. If you’re saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.〞If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if the y’ve known you half their life.49. Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way _______.A. for you to make more and more new friendsB. to begin your business talksC. to get the conversation going smoothlyD. for you to make a deep and lasting impression on others50. After having asked somebody a question, it’ll be polite of you to _______.A. make clear what kind of person he isB. listen to his reply attentivelyC. wait quietly and patiently for his answerD. go on asking him more questions51. Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who _______.A. are good at making any topic interestingB. never talk too much or too littleC. always speak in a gentle wayD. know how and when they should change the topic of the talk52. AOrren Fox fell in love with chickens at nine. It was really almost by accident —Orren played in a friend's house whose family had chickens, and he became interested in the animals immediately. Later, he started volunteering every Saturday at a local farm; within a few months the farmowner suggested that Orren get a few chicks of his own.“I don't know what it was, but something caught my interest,” says Orren, now 14. Today Orren has 23 chickens, four ducks, and 250,000 bees. His happy chickens lay a lot of healthy eggs, which he sells all the year round. He became a vegetarian (素食者) after he learned about the cruelty and negative (消极的) environmental effects of factory farms. In his diary he writes about raising happy chickens and bees, food and healthy eating, farming, and generally making the world a better place. “Farming affects our earth mor e than anything else,” says Orren. “It's something you have to do correctly, or it will ruin our planet. It's often ignored, but for me, learning about where my food comes from has been really interesting.”In fall 2009, Orren started a farm club at his sc hool. “I wanted to get people to learn more about farming and what fun it is,” he says.Orren's passion (热情) for farming and other types of animals continues to grow. He went to the Essex Country Bee School in early 2010 to learn about beekeeping. Orren now has three beehives (蜂箱) of happy bees. In the summer of 2011, Orren started to sell his honey, BeeHappy, to local stores. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition or the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyedat a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening attractive for many people. Besides, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for families.Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one can’t escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative(消极的) feeling towards gardening. One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable(有益的) than a large one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house so the gardener can work in it at irregular moments.Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.1. Home-grown vegetables _______.A. can remain standing for a long time and need not be picked immediatelyB. have to be eaten as soon as they are pickedC. sell well in the market because of their good qualityD. picked at the right moment are more nutritious than those bought from the market2. Vegetable gardening is attractive for many people because _____.A. it requires little moneyB. it is enjoyable and profitableC. they can work in the vegetables garden at irregular momentsD. it provides vegetables for the family all the year round3. The author suggests that an ideal vegetable garden _____.A. should be sunnyB. should be within walking distanceC. should be large-sizedD. should consist of full soil4. From the passage we can conclude that ______.A. vegetables take little care while growingB. vegetables can be grown in almost any kind of soilC. vegetable gardening is a necessary part of life for peopleD. vegetables gardening is a good pastime for old people总结:高一英语测试题就为大家介绍到这了,希望高一的同学们好好学习,在高一阶段打好基础。
