Lawrence left a good number of controversial works to the world, among which the Sons and Lovers was listed the 9th of the 100 most popular books in the 20th century by the Modern Library. Besides the might good and precious literature fortunes bestowed to the folk, Lawrence on the other hand also urged the world to take a deep consideration into moral ethics in love affairs among people. As mentioned in the marvelous literature work, to most people of the world, the love affairs between mom and sons are not prone to be accepted as they are against the traditional moral ethics seriously. Through the analysis into this inevitable love tragedy, distance in to be blame for what it takes to result in the cothurnus.Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Only with a decent distance can love shine brilliantly, as it is supposed to be.Let’s take a glance at what is in the well known work. As a refined lady of above low class, Gertrude Coppard fell in love with Walter Morel, a coal miner of lower class in a Christmas ball, at first sight. Very quickly they got married and enjoyed a short period of happy life, after which the happy family began to fall into a turmoil with the coming of several kids, owing to the mistreatment from her husband and declining life conditions. Soon after their informal broke-up, Mrs. Moral shifted her love to her sons, William the eldest first and followed the younger Paul. She was so devoted to her sons and so were the kids to their poor mom, although meanwhile thy both got together with some girls surnamed girlfriends. After suffering a lot from the complicated love affairs, Paul was left with nothing but the sequential death of his brother and his mom, lover as he may think.When come to the question who to be blame for the love tragedy, from my point of view, distance is the first to be taken into account.For one thing, the distance resulted from the gap of the Morals is the primacy factor accounting for the tragedy. At first sight the Morals fell in love in the ball, with a closer distance the family shared a short term of happiness until Mr. Moral began to decline in life and committed mistreatment to his wife regardless of the existence of his children. As the situation worsened, both Mrs. Moral and her sons grew indignation on poor Walter Moral and that was the beginning of the hearts between mom and sons grew fonder. Shifting from her husband, the desperate woman posed all her love on her sons, first William and then the younger Paul. To the sons, their mom was a great power and they could not get away from her. To a great extent, both William and Paul unconsciously took their mom as lovers whom they could whole-heartedly devote to and so the tragedy began to prevail.For another, the indecent distance both William and Paul left on their mom is the key cause to their improper love affairs. William, a promising man to earn a decent living in the future, should have not fallen into this trap as he was supposed topursue his own happiness in a rather faraway place from home, including loving with the girls he was into. On the contrary, what William did was just the other way around. At one time he fell in love with a lady whom he deemed as the one but all this changed after he brought his girlfriend home when his mom was totally into him at that time. His mom despised the lady who was to be her daughter-in-law for her superficiality in response to the rivalry for the same man. Under the fierce power and pressure of his mother, William finally did not have a happy ending with that girl and came back to his mom instead. Too intimated to each other, the two grew fonder and fonder until William died of an incurable disease, leaving poor Mrs. Moral heart-broken. After losing William, she began to shift her love to Paul, the second son but not so promising as William. Paul, more attached his mom, did not move too far from home to make a living. Instead, he just got a job nearby and resumed to his painting, with his mother standing by. Like his brother William, Paul did also have affairs with two ladies but ended with the same tragedy. Considering the reasons for this, the much too intimated relationship with his mom is unavoidable to be taken into account. Being too attached to his mom, every time dated with other girls he just could not really got into her because his mom was always there in his mind. All the girls tried hard to draw all out of him but only to end without any content. As was expected, Paul was left with nothing when his mom passed away. He was expected to have nobody else in the rest of his life because no room would be prepared for anyone but his dead mom.Too long a distance between the Morals led to an unhappy family and an extremely intimated distance between sons and mom also resulted in love tragedy. When comes to the family education, it does leave us a lot to think about. To what extent the different sexes in a family should be intimated to one another, especially for dad and daughter or mom and son, is the key element for keeping a decent and harmonious relationship among family members. Taking the traditional moral ethics into consideration, love or even sex between mom and son (or dad and daughter) is unswervingly accepted, let alone marriage.From a broader prospect, the relationship among people is very delicate. As described in a famous poem, I am standing on the bridge for the beautiful scenery while the one enjoying scenery upstairs is looking at me. Distance makes beauty and on the other hand distance also destroys beauty.In a word, keep a decent distance with the one who you are getting along with. Leave certain room and freedom for others and only in this way can we maintain a harmonious relationship with people and the world.Things will develop in opposite direction when they become extreme. Distance can make beauty and destroy beauty as well.。
