Learning how to dance, play a musical instrument, or create a comic strip (连环漫画) isn’t just fun. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, kids who study art are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. Why? Research shows that arts education can strengthen critical (批判性的) thinking, memory, and even math skills. Access to music, dance, and arts programs is especially important for children in low-income communities. With fund shortages a concern, organizations around the country help schools introduce students to the arts. In my area, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education (ACE) program adds arts education in local public and private schools. Started in 1990, the program includes school visits from musicians and actors and field trips to art museums and theaters. To learn more about ACE, I spoke with Rebecca Whitney, who is the program’s director of education. She explained that ACE was designed to deepen students’ understanding of the world through music, dance, and even drama.Expanding horizons and providing access to everyone are the most important. “The important value of arts education is to teach and inspire creativity, cooperation, community, and connections,” Whitney said. “Most schools pay only $17 per student for all of the programming.”Since it was set up, ACE has inspired tens of thousands of young people, including me. I was a member of the ACE program in elementary school. I remember taking a trip to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, which fuels my love for the performing arts. I now play the violin for a local symphony orchestra My friend, Isabella Krynicka, is also a member of the orchestra and ACE. “It was so inspirational to watch professional musicians perform,” she recalled. Now that pandemic restrictions are easing, ACE will continue its in-person programs at schools.“The most rewarding part of working with ACE,” Whitney said,“is seeing the excitement and wonder students and teachers have.”1.It is difficult for some schools to introduce arts education because of______.A.a lack of confidence B.a lack of profitC.a lack of financial support D.a lack of interest2.What’s the aim of ACE?A.To improve students’ academic achievements.B.To help kids understand the world better through arts.C.To raise funds for children in low-income communities.D.To choose talented children for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.3.How did Isabella Krynicka feel after watching professional musicians perform? A.Discouraged.B.Unexpected.C.Pleased.D.Encouraged. 4.What is the passage mainly about?A.An important program.B.The importance of education.C.The introduction of an organization.D.The significance of arts education. The Australian Koala Foundation says Australia has lost about 30 percent of its koalas over the past three years. The non—profit group says drought, wildfires and development projects played a part in the drop in the koala population. They are asking the government to do more to protect the creature’s environment. The group said the koala population has dropped to less than 58,000 this year from more than 80,000 in 2018. The biggest decrease(减少) was in the state of New South Wales, where the numbers have dropped by 41 percent. Deborah Tabart leads the Australian Koala Foundation. She called the drop quite huge. Only one area in the study was estimated(预估) to have more than 5,000 koalas. Some areas were estimated to have as few as five or ten.Tabart said, “What we’re concerned about are places like western New South Wales where the drought over the last ten years has just had this cumulative(积累) effect, river systems completely dry for years, and red gum plants, which are the lifeblood of koalas, are dead.” The loss in New South Wales likely sped up after large forest areas were destroyed by wildfires in late 2019 and early 2020. But some of those areas already had no koalas.Tabart said the country needs a koala protection law. Land clearing by property developers and road builders has also destroyed the koala’s environment. “I think everyone gets it that we’ve got to change. But it bulldozers (推土机) keep working, then I really fear for the koalas,” Tabart said.5.How did the author develop the second paragraph?A.By giving numbers.B.By telling stories.C.By following the time order.D.By comparing opinions.6.What do we know from paragraph 3?A.The harm to koalas from wildfires.B.The bad effect of development.C.The death of various trees.D.Some causes of the decrease in koalas.7.What did Tabart mainly suggest in order to protect koalas?A.Fighting against climate change.B.Making a special law.C.Stopping housing building.D.Keeping wildfires from spreading.8.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Australia’s Wild Animals Are Facing Big DangerB.Effects of Australia’s Wildfires Are Beginning to Show UpC.Australia Lost One-Third of Its Koalas in Last Three YearsD.Koalas in Australia Could Disappear from the Earth in the Future17-year-old Tibetan girl Cigla is a freshman at Nagqu No.2 Senior High School in Lhasa, which sits 3,650 meters above sea level. She now plays point guard for the school’s12-member female basketball team.“Practice makes perfect. You get used to the elevation (海拔) when you love the sport and train hard enough,” said the potential basketball star, who has been passionate about the sport since taking it up three years ago.Cigla wears wristbands when playing her favorite sport. With her outstanding speed, agility (灵活) and accurate passes, she never fails to shine on the basketball court, even when she competes against the boys. Though she is a freshman in high school, Cigla already has a clear picture of her future-entering a sports college to study basketball. In the eyes of Cigla, who comes from a poor herder’s family in northern Tibet’s Nagqu City, studying in Lhasa, the region’s most developed city, has made it much easier for her to realize her basketball dream. With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters, Nagqu is among the most uninhabitable places in Tibet, known as the “roof of the world”. Low-oxygen environments and extreme weather have long influenced the health of Nagqu students, hampering the development of primary education in the area.Like Cigla, many students at the school are from poor farmers’ and herders’ families. Dawa Droma, a senior student also on the school’s female basketball team, said her passion (热爱) for the sport started from her first basketball game in her freshman year.“I had never touched a basketball before that game but joined the class team anyway. When I scored and heard my classmates cheer for me, I couldn’t feel more proud. That’s how I fell in love with basketball and never looked back,” she recalled. Reflecting on the influence of basketball on her life, Dawa Droma said the sport has helped her get fit and build up confidence over the years. “Meeting players from different schools has certainly made me a more outgoing person,” she said.9.Which of the following words can best describe Cigla’s feeling about basketball? A.Bored.B.Enthusiastic.C.Confused.D.Confident. 10.What may help Cigla realize her basketball dream greatly?A.Her family background.B.Her parents’ support.C.Her plans.D.Her school’s location.11.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “hampering” in paragraph 4?A.Improving.B.Decreasing.C.Preventing.D.Leading. 12.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Dawa Droma seldom feels proud when scoring.B.Dawa Droma has been affected by basketball greatly.C.Playing basketball increases Dawa Droma’s sense of touch.D.Meeting players from different schools makes Dawa Droma upset. Years ago I began to learn to drive in a driving training center.

Once upon a time in a small village, there was a little girl named Lily. She loved to read books and dream about faraway places. One day, while she was walking in the woods, she stumbled upon a magical book. As soon as she opened it, she was transported to a land filled with talking animals and colorful flowers. In this magical land, Lily met a wise old owl named Oliver. Oliver told her that in order to return home, she needed to pass a series of tests. The first test was a test of courage. Lily needed to cross a river by walking on a narrow, shaky bridge. She was scared, but with Oliver's encouragement, she took a deep breath and started walking. She made it to the other side, feeling proud of herself. The second test was a test of wisdom. Lily was given a riddle to solve: "I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?" She thought for a moment and then confidently answered, "An echo!" Oliver nodded and congratulated her on her wisdom. Finally, Lily faced the last test, a test of kindness. She came across a wounded bird with a broken wing. Without hesitation, she picked up the bird and carefully bandaged its wing. The bird chirped happily and flew away, and Lily knew she had passed the test. With tears in her eyes, Lily bid farewell to Oliver and the magical land. As she closed the book, she found herself back in the woods. She was filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the lessons she had learned.Questions:1. What did Lily find while walking in the woods?2. Who helped Lily in the magical land?3. What was the first test?4. What was the answer to the riddle?5. What was the last test?2. Have you ever wondered why birds migrate? Migration is the seasonal movement of animals from one place to another. Birds migrate to find better nesting grounds and food sources. The timing and distance of migration can vary depending on the bird species.Migration is a long and tiring journey for birds. They face many challenges along the way, such as adverse weather conditions and the risk of predators. Despite these challenges, birds have developed amazing adaptations to survive during migration. Some birds navigate using landmarks such as mountains and rivers, while others rely on the Earth's magnetic field. They can sense the magnetic fields and use this information to guide them to their destination. Birds also have the ability to store larger amounts of fat to provide energy during their long flights.Birds migrate in flocks to increase their chances of survival. Flying in a group helps them conserve energy and stay safe from predators. They take turns leading the flock in a V-formation, which reduces wind resistance and allows them to fly more efficiently. In recent years, the migration patterns of some bird species have changed due to climate change and habitat loss. It is important for us to protect the habitats of migratory birds and reduce our impact on their migration routes.Questions:1. Why do birds migrate?2. What challenges do birds face during migration?3. How do birds navigate during migration?4. How do birds conserve energy during migration?5. What is the impact of climate change on bird migration? 1. Lily found a magical book while walking in the woods.2. Oliver, the wise old owl, helped Lily in the magical land.3. There are only a few men in all of the history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy only because someone said he was a genius.“ There is no such thing as genius,”Edison said. He said that what people called genius was mostly hard work. But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. Nature, he often said, is full of secrets. He tried to understand them; then, he tried to learn what could usefully be done with them. Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people will do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking can give men enjoyment and pleasure.Edison could not understand how anyone could be uninterested in life. As he loved tothink, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what ideas he had about life. “Work,” he answered. “Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier.” He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work.16. The last sentence in the passage most probably implies ____________.A. life is too short for Edison to invent more for human beingsB. Edison made 100 inventions in his lifeC. Edison was able to live and work for 100 yearsD. People of his time were ready to give Edison another 100 years’ workCThomas Alva Edison lit up the world with his invention of the electric light. Without him, the world might still be a dark place. However, the electric light was not his only invention. He also invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.Thomas A.Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847. His family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old.Surprisingly, he attended school for only two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was mostly self-educated.His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age with electrical and mechanical things at home. When he was 12 years old, he got his first job.He became a newsboy on a train that ran between Port Huron and Detroit. He set up a laboratory in a baggage car of the train so that he could continue his experiments in his spare time. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. Thomas was fired when he accidentally set fire to the floor of the baggage car. Thomas then worked for five years as a telegraph operator, but he continued to spend much of his time on the job conducting experiments. He got his first patent in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity. However, the vote recorder was not a success. In 1870, he sold another invention, a stock-ticker, for $40,000. A stock-ticker is a machine that automatically prints stock prices on a tape. He was then able to build his first shop in Newark, New Jersey. Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but thought of his deafness as a blessing in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He called himself a "two-shift man" because he worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931, at his estate in West Orange, New Jersey. He left numerous inventions that improved the quality of life all over the world.21.Thomas Edison did things in this order:A.he became a telegraph operator, a newsboy, and then got his first patentB.he became a newsboy, got his first patent, and then became a telegraph operator C.he got a patent, became a telegraph operator, and then became a newsboyD.he became a newsboy, a telegraph operator, and then got a patent22.Of all the inventions, __________ was probably the most important for civilization.A.the vote recorder B.the stock tickerC.the light bulb D.the motion picture camera23.The main idea of this passage is __________.A.Thomas Edison was always interested in science and inventions, and he invented many important things.B.Thomas Edison could not keep a job.C.Thomas Edison worked day and night on his experiments.D.Deaf people make good inventors because they can focus without the distraction of spoken conversation.CLight for the CityEdison and his assistants came to New Y ork to set up an electric power system. They hoped it would provide enough electricity to light up a part of the great city. They bought several machines with them. These were called generators, which produced electricity power for lamps in Edison’s building.Soon there were lights for the building. Edison lived in a room facing the street and he often worked over night. The light burned brightly and steadily and he often worked over night. People often came and stopped their horse-drawn carriage to look. Everyone knew that Thomas Edison was in town.First, the inventor and his assistants produced several large generators. A great deal of power would be needed to light up even a small part of the city. Then the workers were busy digging deep trenches in the hard earth below the city streets, and Edison had fourteen miles of wire laid into the trenches. The wire connected each building to a generator.Setting up an electric power system was not an easy job. It took a year and a half. InSeptember, 1882, the job was finished.A small group of men stood around Edison inside the power house. The big mome nt came at last. The inventor, taking a deep breath, pulled a switch. The electric lights flashed up.“V ery good! V ery good!” a man nearby shouted to praise Edison for what he had done.“Sir,” said Edison, “this is only the beginning!” And Edison was right. Soon Edison’s lamp were lighting up cities all over the world.24 he generators they brought with them could produce as much as electricity as ______ needed.A. Glenn. Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury(水星) capsule(宇宙飞行容器)was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. On the dark land 100 miles below, he saw a sprinkling of light. They marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.In Friendship7, Glenn radioed, “The lights show up very well. Thank for everybody for turning them on.” His capsule raced on to the east.During his three orbits of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ship at sea. Others were in the United States. Many of the stations had been built with the help of other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria(尼日利亚), Zanzibar(尚巴西,坦桑尼亚领土的一部分), and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network.John H. Glenn. Jr., was the first America to orbit the earth. For his flight, the tracking network(跟踪网络)covered 60,000 route miles. Five hundred men worked in the stations along the route. Since his flight, the network has grown. Today, it covers more than 100,000 route miles and has about one hundred stations. One-third of these stations are outside of the United States.29. This passage is mainly about ____________.A talking to ships at sea around the worldB breaks in the worldwide networkC the first American to orbit the earthD a satellite which fell into the ocean30. S.A new report says the cost of studies at public colleges in the United States increased fourteen percent this year. This is the biggest increase in tuition (学费) in thirty years. But the study also found that the average student pays a lot less than the published costs of a college education, because of grants (补助金). And it points out that American students received a record amount of financial aid last year.Students do not have to repay grants, unlike financial aid in the form of loans(贷款). About half of American college students receive grants. This means that educationcosts differ from student to student. The report is from the College Board. This is a non-profit membership group of schools and other educational organizations. One of its best-known jobs is to administer (管理) college entrance tests. The College Board says tuition at two-year public colleges rose at the same rate as four-year schools. The College Board says the increases were mainly caused by cuts(削减)in state spending on education. But a congressman (议员) says colleges have increased their prices in both good and bad economic times. John Boehner of Ohio is chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Work force. He says colleges do not want to talk about their decisions to spend money to build things like rock-climbing walls. The College Board collected information from four-thousand colleges and universities. It says the average total charge for students who live at a public college in their state is ten-thousand-six-hundred dollars. While tuition rose fourteen percent this year, housing and other costs increased at a lower rate.At a private (私立) college, total charges are almost twenty-seven-thousand dollars. That is an increase of about six percent over last year.David Ward is president of the American Council on Education. His group represents colleges and universities. Mr. Ward called the College Board findings bad news. But he says percentage increases in tuition do not tell the whole story. He says there was good news about grants and other student aid.The College Board says financial aid for the last school year reached 105,000 million dollars. That amount was up sharply from the year before.Answer the following questions according to the passage:31 How much did the cost of studies at public colleges in the United States increase this year according to the report.________________________________________________________________32 he students do not have to pay the financial aid in the form of loans, do they?_____________________________________________________________33 What is one of the best jobs of the College Board?___________________________________________________________34 How much are the total charges for a student at a private college?___________________________________________________________35 Why does Mr. Ward say percentage increases in tuition do not tell the whole story? __________________________________________________________课外作业:完形填空(30分)阅读下面短文,撑握其大意,然后从36~55各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项The four famous rock stars were due to arrive at any moment and a large crowd of young people had gathered at the airport to welcome them.
