Similar to your bedside alarm clock, your internal clock2 runs on a 24-hour cycle. This cycle, called a circadian rhythm, helps control whenyou wake, when you eat and when you sleep.Somewhere around puberty, something happens in the timing of the biological clock. Theclock pushes forward,so adolescents and teenagers are unable to fall asleep as early as they used to. When your mother tells you it's time for bed, your body may be pushing you to stay up3 for several hours more. And the light coming from your computer screen or TV could be pushing you to stay up even later. This shift4 is natural for teenagers. But staying up very late and sleeping late can get your body's clock out of sync with the cycle of light and dark5. It can also make it hard to get out of bed in the morning and may bring other problems, too. Teenagers are put in a kind of a gray cloud6when they don't get enough sleep, says Mary Carskadon,a sleep researcher at Brown University in Providence,RI7 .It affects their mood and their ability to think and learn. But just like your alarm clock, your internal clock can be reset. In fact,it automatically resetsitself every day. How? By using the light it gets through your eyes.Scientists have known for a long time that the light of day and the dark of night play important roles in setting our internal clocks. For years, researchers thought that the signals that synchronize the body's clock8were handled through the same pathways that we use to see.But recent discoveries show that the human eye has two separate light-sensingsystems. One system allows us to see. The second system tells our body whether it's day or night.词汇:circadian/s3:'keidiən/ adj.

2013年职称英语卫生类B新增文章篇目*第二十九篇“Don’t Drink Alone” Gets New Meaning In what may be bad news for bars and pubs, an European research group has found that people drinking alcohol outside of meals have a significantly higher risk of cancer in the mouth and neck than do those taking their libations with food. Luigino Dal Maso and his colleagues studied the drinking patterns of 1,500 patients from four cancer studies and another 3,500 adults who had never had cancer. After the researchers accounted for the amount of alcohol consumed, they found that individuals who downed a significant share of their alcohol outside of meals faced at least a 50 to 80 percent risk of cancer in the oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus, when compared with people who drank only at meals. Consuming alcohol without food also increased by at least 20 percent the likelihood of laryngeal cancer. “Roughly 95 percent of cancers at these four sites traced too smoking or drinking by study volunteers,” Dal Maso says. The discouraging news his team reports, is that drinking with meals didn’t eliminate cancer risk at any of the sites. For their new analysis, the European scientists divided people in the study into four groups, based on how many drinks they reported having in an average week. The lowest-intake group included people who averaged up to 20 drinks a week. The highest group reported downing at least 56 servings of alcohol weekly for an average of eight or more per day. Cancer risks for the mouth and neck sites rose steadily with consumption even for people who reported drinking only with meals. For instance, compared with people in the lowest-consumption group, participants who drank 21 to 34 alcohol servings a week at least doubled their cancer risk for all sites other than the larynx. If people in these consumption groups took some of those drinks outside meals, those in the higher consumption group at least quadrupled their risk for oral cavity and esophageal cancers.People in the highest-consumption group who drank only with meals had 10 times the risk of oral cancer, 7 times the risk of pharyngeal cancer, and 16 times the risk of esophageal cancer compared with those who averaged 20 or fewer drinks a week with meals. In contrast, laryngeal cancer risk the high-intake, with-meals-only group was only triple that in the low-intake consumers who drank with meals.“Alcohol can inflame tissues. Over time, that inflammation can trigger cancer.” Dal Maso says. He suspects that food reduced cancer risk either by partially coating digestive-tract tissues or by scrubbing alcohol off those tissues. He speculates that the reason laryngeal risks were dramatically lower for all study participants traces to the tissue’s lower exposure to alcohol.1. Researchers have found that the risk of cancer in the mouth and neck is higher with peopleA. who drink alcohol outside of meals.B. who drink alcohol at meals.C. who never drink alcohol.D. who drink alcohol at bars and pubs.2. Which of the following is NOT the conclusion made by the researchers about “drinking with meals”?A. It has a lower risk of cancer than drinking without food.B. It may also be a cause of cancer.C. It increases by 20 percent the possibility of cancer in all sites.D. It does not eliminate cancer risk at any of the sites.3. Approximately how many drinks do the lowest-intake group average per day?A. 3 drinks .B. 8 drinks.C. 20 drinksD. 50 drinks.4. Which cancer risk is the lowest among all the four kinds of cancer mentioned in the passage?A. Oral cancerB. Laryngeal cancerC. Pharyngeal cancerD. Esophageal cancer5. According to the last paragraph, tissue's lower exposure to alcoholA. explains why inflammation triggers cancer.B. accounts for why food can coat digestive-tract tissues.C. is the reason why food can scrub alcohol off tissues.D. reduces the risk of laryngeal cancer.

Craig Rogers was sitting on his surfboard, scanning the distance for his next wave, when his board suddenly stopped moving. He looked down and was terrified to see a great white shark biting the front of his board.“I could have touched its eye with my elbow,”says Craig. The shark had surfaced so quietly that he hadn't heard a thing. In his horror and confusion,he waved his arms and accidentally cut two of his fingers on the shark's teeth. He then slid off the opposite side of his surfboard into the water. Then, with Craig in the water and blood flowing from his fingers, the five-meter-long shark simply swam away, disappearing into the water below.Although sharks are often categorized as killers that hunt and eat as many humans as they can, this is factually inaccurate.Sharks very rarely kill humans.A person has a greater chance of being struck by lightning or drowning in a bath than of being killed by a shark.Only74people have been reported killed by great whites in the last century. But great white sharks can reach six meters in length and weigh2,200 kilograms or more. With frightening jaws that can hold up to3,000teeth arranged in several rows, they could very easily kill and eat a helpless human in the water. Why is it,then, that most people survive attacks by great whites?Shark researchers are trying to comprehend the reasons that allow people to escape without being eaten. The most common explanation is that great whites don't see well.It has been thought that they mistake people for the seals or sea lions which make up a large part of their diet. There is reason to doubt this, however.Recent information shows that great whites can actually see very well. Also, when attacking seals, great whites shoot up to the surface and bite with great force. When approaching humans, however, they most often move in slowly and bite less hard. They soon discover that humans are not a high—fat meal.“They spit us out because we're too bony,”says Aidan Martin, director of Reef Quest Center for Shark Research.Shark researchers like Martin hypothesize that great whites are actually curious animals that like to investigate things. It's possible that they use their bite not only to kill and eat,but also to gather information.Although such an experience is unlucky for people like Craig Rogers, when sharks bite surfboards or other objects or people, they are likely just trying to learn what they are. 1....cut two of his fingers on the shark's teeth.

When Our Eyes Serve Our Stomach

Inhalable Water DropletsYou think that the biggest threat to your health when taking a shower comes from slipping on a bar of soap? Well, guess again.Preliminary studies by engineers at the University of Cincinnati and the Oak Ridge Institute for science and education, also in Cincinnati, indicate that some water-saving shower nozzles produce water droplets so small they can be inhaled, exposing anyone using the shower to several different health hazards.Using a device called an optical particle counter the researchers tested a number of shower nozzles, both of adjustable and fix-spray styles. They found that some products create droplets less than 10 microns in diameter-small enough to be inhaled. That\'s problem, the researchers theories, because the water may contain trace of chemicals used by treatment facilities to kill microbes and bacteria in the water. These organic compounds are relatively safe to take in by drinking, but may not be safe to inhale.Another threat may be possible as well. Previous research has shown that the droplets can contain microbes that live inside the warm, wet interior of shower nozzles. When the faucet is turn on, these microbes are swept out through the nozzles. If these droplets are inhaled, the microbes could pose a threat to people who are with asthma and other respiratory problems. All of this doesn't mean you should skip your morning shower just yet. More research is needed, cautious oak ridge institute scientist Veranda Sethi says, before anyone can determine just how serious — or insignificant — these health risks may be. Moreover, not all water-conserving nozzles produce inhalable droplets. "It all depends on the design of the nozzle," says Sethi. Right now there is no way for consumers to know which nozzle produce these tiny drops. "We are working to develop specifications for shower head designs that would not generate droplets in the inhalable size range," he adds.1.The first paragraph is a question to which the author hopes to have a positive answer from thereader.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned2.Shower nozzles shower nozzles that produce water droplets, big and small, can expose anyoneusing the shower to health problems.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned3.The chemicals contained in water kill bacteria to make it safe for drinking.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned4. Thus, most American traditions are not really American. But Thanksgiving (感恩节)is different because it started in America. So it is a truly American tradition.Life provides many good and bad things. Every year,in November,Thanksgiving Day reminds us of the good things in life, and people are thankful. On this day people usually eat turkey and great quantities of other foods. Jesse has decided to spend Thanksgiving with David and Elizabeth Watson because he likes them, and because he cannot go to his parents' home in Chicago.Elizabeth's nickname (昵称)is Betty, and people usually call her that. She is the secretary of Jesse's boss. Jesse got to know the Watsons two years ago and he and Dave have become good friends. Sometimes they go fishing or to a ball game together. The Watsons live in a small apartment in a suburb of New York City. The offices where Betty works are in downtown New York, and she has to take a bus and two subway trains to go to work every day. It takes her about one hour to get there. She finds the trip boring and tiring. She wants to stay home in order to take care of the family and enjoy the children. The Watsons have three children. Their daughter Sue is in the fourth grade and their son Paul is in the second grade. They also have a two-year-old daughter,Ann.The children like Jesse;he is their hero. He tells them stories about foreign countries, about Africa and China, about the Pacific and Japan;he has never even seen most of these countries. He knows about fast cars and new inventions. The Watson children think that Jesse is full of adventures;he is fascinating to them. Frequently he takes them to the park and joins them in their games.Today Jesse brought Sue a record of her favorite music, because she has a new record player. He also brought Paul a toy truck and Ann a plastic (塑料)book with bright pictures, and Betty a bunch of flowers. Betty cooked a nice turkey, and they all ate too much. After dinner the children wanted to go out to the park with Jesse. But they had to stay home, because it was raining. Later,Dave and Jesse sat down in front of the TV to watch a football game.1 Thanksgiving is not a truly American traditionA RightB WrongC Not mentioned2 Thanksgiving Day falls on the 4th Thursday in November.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned3 The turkey is a most popular food on Thanksgiving DayA RightB WrongC Not mentioned4 Jesse and his boss are good friends.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned5 Elizabeth enjoys going to work in downtown New YorkA RightB WrongC Not mentioned6 The children like Jesse because he once traveled around the worldA RightB WrongC Not mentioned7 Jesse had a good time in his friends' homeA RightB WrongC Not mentioned【参考答案】1. George liked his job and he liked the town he lived in,but his wife kept telling him that his pay was not enough to meet the needs of the family. That was why he was thinking of taking a job in Birmingham,a nearby city, about 50 miles away. He had been offered a job in a factory there, and the pay was far better.George lived in Welford,a medium-sized town. He really liked the place and didn't like the idea of moving somewhere else, but if he took the job in Birmingham,he would have to move his family there.Henry Manley was the manager of a small company manufacturing electric motors. The company was in deep trouble because, among other reasons, the Japanese were selling such things at very low prices. As a result,Manley had to cut his own prices and profits as well. Otherwise he would not get any orders at all. Even then, orders were still not coming in fast enough,so that there was no money for raises (加工资)for his workers Somehow,he had to struggle along and keep his best workers as well. He sighed. Just then the phone rang. His secretary told him that George Strong wanted to see him as soon as possible. Manley sighed again. He could guess what it was about. CUsing HIV Virus to Cure CancerScientists are planning to use human immunodeficiency (免疫缺陷)virus (HIV),one of mankind's most feared viruses,as a carrier of genes which can fight cancer and a range of diseases that cannot be cured. The experts say HIV has an almost perfect ability to avoid the body's immune (免疫的)defenses, making it ideal for carrying replacement genes into patients' bodies, according to the Observer.A team at the California-based Salk Institute, one of the world's leading research centers on biological sciences, has created a special new breed of HIV and has started negotiations with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)to begin clinical gene therapy (治疗)trials this year. The first trials are expected to involve patients suffering from cancers that cannot be cured by surgery although project leader Professor Inder Verma said the HIV technique would have "far wider applications".The plan remains very likely to cause controversy since it involves making use of a virus which has caused more than 22 million deaths around the world in the past two decades. Verma said that the idea of using HIV for a beneficial purpose was "shocking" but the fierce nature of HIV had disappeared by having all six of the potentially deadly genes removed.Illnesses such as various cancers are caused when a gene in a patient's body fails to work properly. In the past two years, breakthroughs in genetics (遗传学)have led gene therapy scientists to try and replace the genes that do not function normally.Unfortunately, the body's immune defenses have been known to attack the modified genes and make them lose their effects before they can start their task and progress in the field has been held up by the lack of a suitable carrier.'The HIV virus has the ability to escape from, and. then destroy, the immune defense cells designed to protect our bodies and this makes it attractive to scientists as a way of secretly conveying replacement genes into patients' bodies.1 FDA has approved the plan of using HIV to cure cancer in humansA RightB WrongC Not mentioned2 The idea of using HIV for a beneficial purpose has been widely accepted.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned3 HIV can be safely used to cure cancer only if the deadly genes have been removedA RightB WrongC Not mentioned4 The HIV virus is an excellent warrior to fight the body's immune cellsA RightB WrongC Not mentioned5 Other countries are also expected to begin clinical gene therapy trials soonA RightB WrongC Not mentioned6 It is the lack of money that has held up the progress in using replacement genes to cure cancer.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned7 The HIV virus has caused more deaths in developed countries.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【参考答案】1. "They're the best toys out there," says Howie Choset at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Choset is a robotics, a person who designs, builds or programs robots. When Choset was a kid, he was interested in anything that moved - cars, trains, animals. He put motors on Tinker toy cars to make them move. Later, in high school, he built mobile robots similar to small cars.Hoping to continue working on robots, he studied computer science in college. But when he got to graduate school at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,Choset's labmates were working on something even cooler than remotely controlled cars: robotic snakes. Some robots can move only forward, backward, left and right. But snakes can twist(扭曲) in many directions and travel over a lot of different types of terrain (地形). "Snakes are far more interesting than the cars," Choset concluded. After he started working at Carnegie Mellon, Choset and his colleagues there began developing their own snake robots. Choset's team programmed robots to perform the same movements as real snakes, such as sliding and inching forward. The robots also moved in ways that snakes usually don't, such as rolling. Choset's snake robots could crawl (爬行) through the grass, swim in a pond and even climb a flagpole. But Choset wondered if his snakes might be useful for medicine as well. For some heart surgeries, the doctor has to open a patient's chest, cutting through the breastbone. Recovering from these surgeries can be very painful. What if the doctor could perform the operation by instead making a small hole in the body and sending in a thin robotic snake? Choset teamed up with Marco Zenati, a heart surgeon now at Harvard Medical School, to investigate the idea. Zenati practiced using the robot on a plastic model of the chest and then tested the robot in pigs.A company called Medrobotics in Boston is now adapting the technology for surgeries on people. Even after 15 years of working with his team's creations, "I still don't get bored of watching the motion of my robots," Choset says.16. Choset began to build robots in high school.A. RightB. WrongC. Belt has worked for National Geographic since 1978,and has taken pictures on almost every continent in the world. In fact, Antarctica is t he only continent Belt hasn’t seen yet.Belt’s photographs are well known for their beauty and high quality. They also reflect very different cultures and regions of the world. Belt has photographed the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, as well as the green landscapes of the Lake District in England. Recently, her pictures appeared in a book about undeveloped natural places in North America.Everywhere that Belt goes, she takes pictures of people. Belt has found ways to connect with people of all ages and n ationalities even when she does not speak their language. “ The greatest privilege of my job is being allowed into peopled lives,” she has said. “The camera is like a passport, and I am often overwhelmed by1 how quickly people welcome me!”Knowing how to break the ice has helped to make Belt a successful photographer, but experts say that anyone can learn to connect with new people. When people speak the same language, greetings and small talk can make strangers feel more comfortable with each other. When people don’t speak the same language, a smile is very helpful. Having something in common can also help break the ice. For example, Belt has traveled with her two children, so when she takes pictures of children or their parents, they all have that family connection in common. Even bad weather can help people to connect when they are experiencing it together.Belt has some advice if you are thinking about a career in photography. You can volunteer to take pictures for a local or ganization that can’t afford to hire a professional photographer. You can also take a good, honest look at your best photographs. If you’re a real photographer, your photos are good because of your personal and technical skills. Belt also recommends studying and learning from photos taken by professional photographers.Remember, the next time you look at a beautiful photograph, you might be looking at the work of Annie Griffiths Belt. And the next time you meet a new person, don’t be afraid to break the ice. The connection you make could be very rewarding.练习:1. Belt has never traveled to England.2. The first comprehensive study on the nation's oral health, released recently by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, calls dental and oral disea ses a “silent epidemic (流行病),” even in children. The report states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. In fact,a recent study pointed to dental care as the most common unmet health need among American children. To help counter this, the American Academy of Periodontology (牙周病学)(AAP)is launching an effort to educate children and parents about the prevention of dental diseases in children.“This is important because oral problems can impact self-esteem for children and lead to problems of eating, speaking and attending to learning,” said Michael McGuire, president of the AAP.Common dental problems seen in children are cavities (龋洞)and gingivitis (龈牙),which are found in the majority of U.S. children. “When these pr oblems are not caught early and treated, they can develop into more severe problems and cause unnecessary suffering,” said McGuire “However, much of the time, oral problems are avoidable problems.”In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas,a group of more than 120 dentists volunteers to deliver dental care to thousands of low-income children each year with its Mobile Dental Unit that travels from school to school.“According to the Surgeon General's Report, about 37 percent of children have not had a dental visit before starting school,” said McGuire. “When children don't see dentists theymiss the opportunity to have problems caught early before they develop into larger, more expensive problems to treat, and parents miss the opportunity to learn how to promote good oral habits in their children.”16 Only in February should attention be paid to children's oral healthA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 Dental and oral diseases are common in both adults and childrenA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Boys miss more school hours each year due to dental-related illnessA RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Oral problems in children can develop into more severe problems.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Oral problems can not be avoided in any wayA RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 The low-income children are very grateful to the dentists.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Some children have never seen a dentist before starting school.

The Weight ExperimentNicola Walters has been taking part in experiments inScotland to discover why humans gain and lost weight. Being locked in a small room called a 'calorimeter'(热量测量室)is one way to find out.1 The sighs above the two rooms read simply "Chamber One" and "Chamber Two". These are the calorimeters: 4m by 2m white-walled rooms where human volunteers are locked up in the name of science. Outside these rooms another sign reads "Please do not enter- work in progress" and in front of the rooms advanced machinery registers every move the volunteers make. Each day, meals measured to the last gram are passed through a hole in the wall of the calorimeter to the resident volunteer.2 Nicola Walters is one of twenty volunteers who, over the past eight months, have spent varying periods inside the calorimeter. Tall and slim, Nicola does not have a weight problem, but thought the strict diet might help with her training and fitness programme. A self-employed community dance worker, she was able to fit the experiment in around her work. She saw an advert for volunteers at her local gym and as she is interested in the whole area of diet and exercise, she thought she would help out.3 The experiment on Nicola involved her spending one dayon a fixed diet at home and the next in the room. This sequence was repeated four times over six weeks. She arrived at the calorimeter at 8:30 am on each of the four mornings and from then on everything she ate or drank was carefully measured. Her every move was noted too, her daily exercise routine timed to the last second. At regular intervals, after eating, she filled in forms about how hungry she felt and samples were taken for analysis.【备注说明,非正文,实际使用可删除如下部分。

The Travels of Ibn Battuta

The Travels of Ibn Battuta“I left Tangier, my birthplace, the 13th of June 1325 with the intention of making the pilgrimage [ to Mecca]... to leave all my friends both female and male, to abandon my home as birds abandon their nests. ”So begins an old manuscript in a library in Paris—the travel journal of Ibn Battuta.Almost two centuries before Columbus, this young Moroccan set off for Mecca, returning home three decades later as one of history's great travelers. Driven by curiosity, he journeyed to remote comers of the Islamic world, traveling through 44 modem countries, three times as far as Marco Polo. Little celebrated in the West2, his name is well known among Arabs. In his hometown of Tangier, a square, a hotel, a cafe, a ferry boat, and even a hamburger are named after him.Ibn Battuta stayed in Mecca as a student for several years, but the urge to travel soon took over. In one adventure, he traveled to India seeking profitable employment with the Sultan of Delhi.3 On the way, he described his group being attacked in the open country by 80 men on foot, and two horsemen:“we fought ... killing one of their horsemen and about twelve of the foot soldiers ….I was hit by an arrow and my horse by another, but God in his grace preserved me .... We carried the heads of the slain to the castle of Abu Bak, har ... and suspended them from the wall. ” In Delhi, the sultan gave him the position of judge, based on his prior study at Mecca. But the sultan had an unpredictable character, and Ibn Battuta looked for an opportunity to leave. When the sultan offered to finance a trip to China, he agreed. Ibn Battuta set off in three ships, but misfortune struck while he was still on the shore. A sudden storm grounded and broke up two ships, scattering treasure and drowning many people and horses. As he watched, the third ship, with all his belongings and slaves一one carrying his child—was carried out to sea and never heard from again. After a lifetime of incredible adventures, Ibn Battuta was finally ordered by the Sultan of Morocco to return home to share his wisdom with the world. Fortunately, he consented and wrote a book that has been translated into numerous languages, allowing people everywhere to read about his unparalleled journeys. 1. ... with the intention of making the pilgrimage……… When Our Eyes Serve Our Stomach第十九篇:Musical Robot Companion Enhances Listener Experience+第四十八篇:Researchers Discover Why Humans Began Walking Upright 完型填空:第三篇:Giant Structures第八篇:Why India Needs Its Dying Vultures+第十三篇:Better Solar Energy Systems: More Heat, More Light第十一篇When Our Eyes Serve Our StomachOur senses ar en‟t just delivering 汪strict view of what‟s going on in the world;they‟re affected by what‟s going on in our heads. A new study finds that hungry people see food-related words more clearly than people who‟ve just eaten.Psychologists have known for decades that what‟s going on,inside our head affects our senses. For example, poorer children think coins are larger than they are, and hungry people think pictures of food are brighter. Remi Radel of University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis,France,wanted to investigate how this happens. Does it happen right away as the brain receives signals from the eyes or a little later as the brain‟s high-level thinking processes get involved.Radel recruited 42 students with a normal body mass index. On the day of his or her test, each student was told to arrive at the lab at noon after three or four hours of not eating. Then they were told there was a delay. Some were told to come back in 10 minutes; others were given an hour to get lunch first. So half the students were hungry when they did the experiment and the other half had just eaten. For the experiment, the participant looked at a computer screen. One by one, 80 words flashed on the screen for about l/300th of a second each. They flashed at so small a size that the students could only consciously perceive. A quarter of the words were food-related. After each word, each person was asked how bright the word was and asked to choose which of two words they‟d seen — a food-related word like cake or a neutral word like boat. Each word appeared too briefly for the participant to really read it. Hungry people saw the food-related words as brighter and were better at identifying food- related words. Because the word appeared too quickly for them to be reliably seen, this means that the difference is in perception ,not in thinking processes, Radel says.“This is something great to me. Humans can really perceive what they need or what they strive for. From the experiment, I know that our brain can really be at the disposal of our motives and needs,” Radel says.
