Unit 3 Sweet, Sweet Homepart ⅠGetting readyA home is a place where people can cook, eat, sleep, relax, and care for their children. Sometimes a house protects things we want to keep safe from burglars; and sometimes a house simply offers you a chance to be by yourself and away from other people. In order to make sure of all these things, you must be very careful in looking for a proper place to live in.A In this section you are going to hear a woman visiting a flat which she is thinking of buying or renting.

What change have these changes brought to children? Some people think they grow up more independent and mature than in the past. They are used to dealing with strangers and mixing with other children.Script:Father leaves for work in the morning after breakfast. The two children take the bus to school, and mother stays home cooking and cleaning until father and the kids return home in the evening. This is the traditional picture of a happy family living in Britain. But is it true today? The answer is no!The past 20 years have seen enormous changes in the lives and structure of families in Britain. The biggest change has been caused by divorce. As many as 2 out of 3 marriages now end in divorce, leading to a situation where many children live with one parent and only see the other at weekends or holidays. There has also been a huge rise in the number of women with children who work. The large rise in divorces has meant many women need to work to support themselves and their children. Even when there is no divorce, many families need both parents to work in order to survive. This has caused an increase in childcare facilities, though it is very expensive and can be difficult to find in many areas. In addition, women are no longer happy to stay at home raising children, and many have careers earning as much or even more than men, the traditional breadwinner. There has also been a sharp increase in the number of single mothers, particularly among teenagers. Some people haveblamed this increase for the rise in crime. They feel the lack of a male role model has damaged these children in society. However, these changes have not had a totally negative effect. For women, it is now much easier to have a career and good salary. Although it is difficult to be a working mother, it has become normal and is no longer seen as a bad thing for the children. As for children themselves, some argue that modern children grow up more independent and mature than in the past. From an early age they have to go to childminders or nurseries, and so are used to dealing with strangers and mixing with other children.Task Three Family Life1) How many years has Jane Brown been married?A. 10 years.B. 8 years.C. 12 years.D. 14 years.2) Where does Jane Brown live?A. When her youngest child reached school age, Jane decided to go back to work. She thought that she should contribute to the household finances. Her salary could make a difference between a financial struggle and a secure financial situation for her family. Jane also felt bored and frustrated in her role as a homemaker and wanted to be more involved in life outside her home. Jane was worried about her children's adjustment to this new situation, but she arranged for them to go to stay with a woman nearby after school each afternoon. They seemed to be happy with the arrangement. The problem seemed to be between Jane and her husband Bill. When Jane was at home all day, she was able to clean the house, go grocery shopping ,wash the clothes, take care of the children and cook two or three meals each day. She was very busy, of course, but she succeeded in getting everything done. Now the same things need to be done, but Jane has only evenings and early mornings to do them. Both Jane and Bill are tired when theyarrive home at 6p.m. Bill is accustomed to sitting down and reading a paper or watching TV until dinner is ready. This is exactly what Jane feels like doing, but someone has to fix dinner and Bill expects it to be Jane. Jane is becoming very angry at Bi ll’s attitude; she feels that they should share the household work, but Bill feels everything should be the same as it was before Jane went back to work.Appreciation1.
