第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)
A
The teacher was leaving and the whole village was sorry. The grocer lent him a small cart and horse to carry his goods to Christminster, such a vehicle quite big for the teacher's belongings. For his only article, in addition to the book cases, was a piano that he had bought when he thought of learning music. But the eagerness having faded, he had never acquired any skill in playing, and it had been a permanent
trouble to him.
The headmaster had gone away for the day, being a man who disliked the sight of changes. He wouldn’t return till the evening, when the new teacher would have arrived, and everything would be smooth again.
The blacksmith, the farm bailiff and the teacher were standing in the sitting room before the instrument. The teacher had remarked that even if he got it into the cart he should not know what to do with it on his arrival at Christminster, since he was only going into a temporary place just at first.
A little boy, who had been assisting in the packing, joined the group of men, saying, “Aunt has got a fuel-house, and it could be put there, perhaps, till you’ve found a place to settle in, sir.”
“Good idea,”said the blacksmith. The smith and the bailiff started to see about the possibility of the suggested shelter, and the boy and the teacher were left alone.
“Sorry I am going, Jude?” asked the latter kindly.
Tears rose into the boy’s eyes. He admitted that he was sorry.
“So am I,” said Mr. Phillotson.
“Why do you go, sir?” asked the boy.
“Well—don't speak of this everywhere. You know what a university is, and a university degree? It is necessary for a man who wants to do anything in teaching. My dream is to be a university graduate. By going to live at Christminster, I’ll be at headquarters(总部) and if my scheme is practicable, I consider being there will afford me a better chance.”
The smith and his companion returned. Old Miss Fawley agreed to give the piano standing-room in her fuel-house. So it was left in the school till the evening, when more hands would be available for removing it; and the teacher gave a final glance round.
At nine Mr. Phillotson mounted beside his box of books, and waved his friends good-bye.
56. It seemed that the teacher ______.
A. was not getting along with the headmaster
B. had lived a rather simple life in the village
C. was likely to go on with his piano practice
D. got fed up with teaching in Christminster
57. The boy named Jude may be described as ______.
A. polite, generous and friendly
B. active, modest and cheerful
C. calm, confident and humorous
D. kind , clever and helpful
58. Why did the teacher leave for Christminster?
A. Because he had been admitted into the university there.
B. Because he was offered a temporary job with better pay.
C. Because he could have better chance to attend university.
D. Because he preferred the life in the city to that in a village.
59. The motive behind the teacher’s leaving lay in his ______.
A. ambition
B. disappointment
C. devotion
D. inspiration
60. Which person does the underlined “his companion” refer to?
A. Mr. Phillotson

Henry Ford grew up on an un-electrified farm, and as a young man he followed Edison's career as the inventor became a national role model. Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer.
In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and, though still working for Edison Co., he had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York, Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison was impressed, who is said to have slammed his fist down and shouted “Young man, that’s the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant.” Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one.
The words comforted Ford greatly, who immediately set out building a second car
which was to become the Model-T. The two men became fast friends and would go on camping trips together. When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race. At the 50th anniversary of
the invention of light-bulb, Ford honored Edison. When Edison spoke, he ended his speech directed at Ford: “ As to Henry Ford, words fail to express my feelings.
I can only say that he is my friend.” Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931.
Once, Ford asked Thomas Edison's son Charles to sit by the dying inventor's bedside and hold a test tube next to his father's mouth to catch his final breath
and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison's soul as it escaped his body
in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life. And later the tube was labeled “Edison's Last Breath”.
The test tube is quite touching in its meaning. Although both men were known
for all sorts of poor behavior towards their loved ones and mistreatment of employees, between them at least, there was clearly a deep respect and admiration.
61. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means that .

C. Edison was extremely amazed at Ford's new idea
D. Edison was angry because Ford stole his idea

A. to remind Edison was Ford's role model
B. to suggest Ford was a man of strange behavior
C. to tell us the importance of a creative idea then
D. to show the close friendship between Henry Ford and Edison
63. “The last breath test tube” can probably be regarded as .
A. a symbol of a friendship and memory
B. a witness to a scientific breakthrough
C. a failure to bring Edison back to life
D. a sign of the two inventors’ poor behavior
64. It can be learned from the last paragraph that “”.

MCDONALD’S Android, Fanta, Yahoo… When you look at these brands’ logos, how
do they make you feel?
Logos are like companies’ faces. A team of psychologists recently found that
our brains are good at remembering different logos, and we develop this ability from
the age of 2. Young children tested in the study could identify logos and link them
to the correct products about 67 percent of the time.
“Some logos are so powerful that they don’t need to spell out their names,”
Alex Hillsberg of Financesonline. Com told the Daily Mail. “They tran scend (跨
越) cultural borders.”
Intrigued (激起…的好奇心) by this finding, Hillsberg did his own study, trying
to figure out what it is about logos that makes such strong impressions.
He found that customers tend to judge products within 90 seconds of seeing them,
and most of this judgment is based on one thing-color.
It’s been known for years that different colors affect people’s emotions differently-scientists call this “color psychology”. And some of these effects
are similar for most people. So Hillsberg stu died many of the world’s most popular logos, focusing especially on their colors.
Red, for example, tends to convey “energy”. Thus, it is associated with intensity(强烈) and feelings of passion. This is why it is used in the logo for the energy drink Red Bull.
The blue Samsung logo brings feelings of trust and confidence because people associate blue with the “depth and stability (沉稳) of the sky and sea”, said Hillsberg.
The big yellow letter “M” of Mcdonald’s is associated with joy and energy, while Andro id’s and Starbucks’ greens were designed to communicate “the harmony of nature”.
The purple used by Yahoo is usually linked with the “luxury of royalty(贵族)”. And orange makes people feel creative, which is perfect for brands such as the Web browser Firefox and the drink Fanta. Brown logos make companies appear reliable, which is why the color is used by the chocolate brand M&Ms.
People used to think that logo designers chose colors based largely on their own preference, but this study says otherwise.
“They are calculated,” said Hillsberg. “Big businesses choose logo colors with one thing in mind: that you remember their logos in your sleep.”
66. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. Young children are better at identifying logos than adults are.
B. Most people can tell logos apart in less than a minute.
C. Logo designers often take cultural differences into consideration.
D. Some logos are so effective that they immediately remind people of their brands.
67. Why does Alex H illsberg focus on logos’colors?
A. He believes logo designers usually prefer certain colors.
B. He thinks that logos’ colors have a big influence on customers’ judgments about brands.
C. He thinks logos’ colors are the easiest thing for customers to rememb er about them.
D. He discovered a new theory called “color psychology” and thinks it’s a good
place to start from.
68. The Samsung logo and M&Ms chocolate logo are successful because both _____.
A. make customers feel that their brands are trustworthy
B. bring great joy and passion to customers
C. give customers the impression of being nature-friendly
D. inspire customers to expand their creative thinking
69. What is the article mainly about?
A. How to become a logo designer.
B. How our brain recognizes and remembers logos.
C. What makes some logos so impressive.
D. The cultural influence of logos.

The Shanghai Technical Supervision Bureau(技术监督局)recently released the results of a sample survey of mobile-phones being sold in the city’s markets. The survey revealed that nine of 14 types, or 64 percent, of imported brand-name mobile-phones fulfilled the standards.
A large number of the low-quality ‘foreign’ cellphones which were marketed as world-famous brands were actually fake (假的) shoddy products lacking the necessary information such as registered trademarks (注册商标), factory of origin, quality certifications and safety indices (指数).
In addition, a survey of Shanghai footwear markets conducted by the Bureau on 30-odd occasions since early this year indicated various brands of ‘foreign shoes,’ including Nike and Puma, were low-quality fake goods. The so-called world-famous brands, priced between 300-500 yuan per pair, were actually worth only 40-60 yuan.
An official from the China Consumer Association pointed to the following complaints concerning “foreign goods” quality problems related to individual products have developed into a universal problem directly related to quantity shipments of goods. It is thus quite obvious that the punishment for fake foreign goods is a task requiring the extreme immediacy (迫切性).
The appearance of fake low-quality foreign goods has disadvantageously affected
the normal operations of China’s real foreign-goods markets, has greatly harmed
the interests of consumers and resulted in heavy losses in state tax revenue(税
收). Officials have pointed out that the key to cracking down on fake foreign goods
is to attack illegal acts related to selling fake foreign goods of poor quality at
the prices applicable for real products.
Officials recommend that product inspection, technical supervision and industrial and commercial departments should strengthen law enforcement efforts, increase the frequency of inspections, and remove the sources of fake foreign goods.
Companies producing and marketing fake foreign goods should be given severe punishment, with all cases referred to the law departments for trial and public supervision should be strengthened. Consumers, on the other hand, should make every
effort to constantly improve their ability to identify fake foreign goods, and should
avoid blindly purchasing such products simply because of their low price.
70. The underlined word “shoddy” in Paragraph 2 is similar in meaning to ______.
A. poor-quality
B. branded
C. low-price
D. foreign
71. The sample survey on mobile phones discovered that ______.
A. all the “foreign” mobile phones were actually produced in China
B. 64 percent of the imported mobile phones were low-quality products
C. nine types of imported mobile phones met the standard of their brands
D. large numbers of low-quality mobile phones had been imported
72. The survey on Shanghai footwear markets showed that ______.
A. “foreign shoes” of various bra nds were of low quality
B. many of the world famous brand shoes sold were actually fake ones
C. world-famous brands of shoes were actually worth 50 to 60 yuan
D. people were paying much more than they should to buy foreign goods
73. An official from the China Consumer Association pointed out that ______.
A. the quality of foreign goods should be improved immediately
B. more and more people were dissatisfied with the quality of foreign goods
C. the problem of fake foreign goods should be dealt with immediately
D. improper shipping could damage the quality of goods
74. One of the negative effects of fake foreign goods was that ______.
A. prices for foreign goods had to be kept low
B. the government suffered great losses in tax collection
C. consumers might lose interest in them
D. the government might be forced to ban the import of all foreign goods
75. It is suggested that consumers______.
A. should resist the temptation to buy goods at low prices
B. should report fake goods by referring them to the law departments
C. should perform the role of government inspection bodies to watch out for fake
goods
D. should learn to distinguish fake foreign goods from real ones for themselves
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Crowd controls could soon become an important skill for climbers on Mount Everest,
as important as physical strength or watching the weather. In a single day last week,
nearly 40 people reached the top of the world --- a record. Reports from base camp
spoke of queues at dangerous ridges and crowds as people passed each other in the
final dash for the 8, 848 meters top.
More traditional mountaineers tease about the circus atmosphere surrounding
Everest in recent years, and there are warnings that the crowds are making the mountain more dangerous. In 1996, 14 died on the mountain when the members of several
groups were trapped at high altitudes by sudden snowstorms. Bad weather in early
May led to this year’s jam on the summit ridge, but the loss, luckily, was light.
Just four climbers died, including a Nepali Sherpa who had made 11 previous successful climbing.
Traditionalists are also worried about the growing tendency of climbers to set
records and achieve “firsts”, rather than simply climb the mountain. This year’s
crop of mountaineers included the oldest man, 64-year-old Sherman Bull from Connecticut, and the youngest, 16-year-old Temba Tsheri Sherpa of Nepal. An American with only one arm was on the mountain this year; an Indian with no legs also tried but failed. Erik Weihennieyer, an American, became the first blind person to reach the top of the world. His fellow climbers stayed in front of him on the way up, describing the type of land and ringing bells.
Nepal views Mount Everest as something of a cash cow. The government charges journeys a minimum of $ 70,000. That is probably why officials in Katmandu are ignoring concerns about overcrowding and talking about even more climbers coming next year. But a celebration of the 48th anniversary of the first conquest of Everest, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was cancelled after violent strikes. Tumultuous(动乱的)Nepali politics, it seems, could be just the crowd-control mea-sure that Everest needs.
