He dreamed, in the American way, of becoming a millionaire. He tried his luck on Wall Street. He was diligent and shrewd and, when he had to be, devious. He put together the deal and he did some things with an electronics acquisition that wouldn‘t bear explaining. He succeeded even beyond his dream: he made twelve million dollars.2) At first the young man assumed that e verything was working out splendidly. ―Isn‘t it grand?‖ he said to his wife, once it was apparent that he had made twelve million dollars. His wife told him that it wasn‘t grand, and he was a nobody.3) ―But that‘s impossible,‖ the young man said. ―I‘m a r ich person. We live in an era that celebrates rich people. Rich people are shown in the newspapers in the company of movie stars and famous novelists and distinguished dress designers. The names of the richest corporate raiders are known to every schoolboy. There are rich real estate sharks whose faces appear on the covers of glossy magazines.‖ But his wife said that his face would not, because he was a nobody. When he stressed the fact that he had twelve million dollars, his wife retorted that a lot of people did, but they were still nobodies. 4) ―I could buy our way onto the committees of important charity balls,‖ the young man said, ―then we‘d be mentioned in the columns.‖ ―Don‘t kid yourself,‖ his wife said. ―The important committees are already filled u p with people who are really rich. People like us would end up working on something like a dinner-dance to benefit the American Psoriasis (牛皮癣) Foundation.‖ The young man mentioned that he owned a co-op apartment on Fifth Avenue that was worth two million dollars. His wife argued that, to a certain extent, two million-dollar co-ops were a dime a dozen. Then the young man boasted of owning a stretch limousine and said it was twenty-one and a half feet long. His wife brushed the idea aside, saying that nobody famous had ever ridden in something like that ,and neither Henry Kissinger nor Calvin Klein had ever heard of him, so he was still a nobody.5) The young man was silent for a while. ―Are you disappointed in me?‖ he finally said to his wife. ―Of course I‘m disappointed in you,‖ she said. ―When you asked me to marry you , you said you would surely amount to something. How was I to know that yo u‘d turn out to be a nobody?‖6) For a moment the young man looked defeated. Then he squared his shoulders and cleared his throat. ―I‘ll make them pay attention, ‖ he said. ―I‘ll buy a professional football team and argue a lot with the coach in public. Celebrities will join me to watch big games from the owner‘s box.‖ The wife ridiculed him, saying that nobody could buy a professional football team for twelve million dollars, because professional football teams cost big bucks.7) ―Then I‘ll buy a magazine and appoint myself chief columnist,‖ the young man said. ―A tiny but exceedingly flattering picture of me will run next to my column every week. The owners of professional football teams will invite me to watch big games from the owner‘s box.‖ The wife bel ieved that he might be able to buy one of those weekly-shoppers throwaways for twelve million dollars, but not a real magazine. One couldn‘t buy a real magazine for chicken feed.8) The young man was very much hurt and asked his wife whether twelve million dollars were chicken feed. But his wife insisted, ―it‘s not big bucks.‖9) ―But that‘s not fair,‖ the young man said. ―I‘m a young man of humble origins who made twelve million dollars. I succeeded even beyond my dream. ‖ ―Some of those things you did wi th the electronics acquisition probably weren‘t fair either,‖ his wife said. ―Fair isn‘t being measured these days. What they measure is money.‖ Then the young man said, if that was the case, he would get more money by going back to Wall Street and making fifty million dollars.10) But before the young man could make fifty million dollars a man from the Securities and Exchange Commission came and arrested him for having committed insider-trading violations in the electronics acquisition.11) The young man was taken away from his office in handcuffs. A picture on the front page of the afternoon paper showed him leaving his arraignment trying to hide his face behind an $850 Italian overcoat. A long article in the morning paper used him as an example of a new breed of Wall Street traders who were the victims of their own greed, probably because of their humble origins. His friends and associates avoided him. 12) Only his wife stuck by him. She tried to see the bright side. ―For someone with only twelve million d ollars,‖ she said to the young man, ―you‘re getting to be pretty well known.‖Ⅳ. It me for the moment.A. excitedB. erasedC. excludedD. eludedRead the following passage carefully and complete the succeeding three items II, III, IV.(1) The family is only one of the variety of agencies of socialization. By socialization we mean the process by which cultural, social and moral values and beliefs are transmitted from one generation to the next. In other words, through the socialization process we learn the basic facts necessary for the performance of a variety of social roles in the society in which we grow up.(2) The socialization function of the family is a generalized one, and is aimed at preparing us for membership of the kinship group and the community. The way in which the process operates will depend largely upon the views taken by the parents of what their children ought to be like when they are grown up. This, in turn, will depend on the environment of the home and the community in which it is established~ For example, an agricultural village family is likely to be living in a very different setting from a professional family in the city.(3) In the rural community emphasis will be placed upon values such as group solidarity and the belief in the natural superiority of the male. The family will transmit these values to the children in order to prepare them for their future roles as adults. Thus the child will grow up placing greater value upon the family as a unit than upon himself as an individual; more emphasis upon a segregation of the roles of husband and wife than upon equality, and so on.(4) In the case of the city family educated to professional standards, the process is likely to take a different form. The child is more likely to be taught the values necessary for success in a world dominated by individual achievement. He will be taught that hard work is necessary to bring about academic success, which is the forerunner to occupational success. To make the best of occupational success he will be taught the value of having an educated wife who can share in this, either by working at her own trained profession to contribute to the material status of his marriage, or by entertaining his friends and colleagues and maintaining his home to a level of high social standing.(5) But the family cannot hope to socialize the child in every aspect of life and this is where the other agencies come in. Of these, school is perhaps the most important. The family is concerned with socializing its members into the group while the school is concerned with socializing its pupils into the wider society. School is very closely linked with our participation in the economic system, in other words, there is a very close link between school and the occupation we take up in adult life.(6) The peer group also operates as an agency, of socialization. In the peer group we associate with others who are approximately of our own age and social status. Peer group associations can be particularly influential at college and university level and are often carried through to adult working life. This means that the peer group takes over in influence where the family and school leave off.(7) No matter how strong the family influence, it cannot hope to provide all the necessary material for socialization into an occupational citizenship because it will not have all the technical and social knowledge necessary to cope with all situations in life. This is very obvious in areas where rapid change is a characteristic feature of life, as in the developing world where technological and industrial advances have shifted populations from their traditional communities, and the strict moral and religious values of the family or tribe are no longer accepted as the natural norms.(8) For these reasons, and many others, there are those who say that the day of the family as it has been traditionally known is now over; that the institution of the family as the only "natural" basic unit of society is in the process of breaking up because of rapidly changing economic conditions as well as the reluctance of the younger generation to accept the strict religious and social morality of the past. But the family itself has undergone considerable changes over the years and there is no doubt that it Will have to face more changes in the future. Thus, although the family may not continue to exist in precisely the form the traditionalists would like, there is no reason to think that it will become obsolete.II. In this section, there are ten incomplete statements or questions, followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and write the corresponding letter on your Answer Sheet. They can actually be quite lazy! Greyhounds are good at fast races but not long-distance running. They do need regular exercise but they like to run for a short burst and then get back on the bed or a fortable seat. Another misunderstanding is that greyhounds must be aggressive<好斗的> because they are big in size. In fact greyhounds love people and are gentle with children.Greyhounds can live for 12 –14 years but usually only race for two or three years, and after that they make great pets. They don’t need a lot of space, don’t make a lot of noise, and don’t eat a lot for their size.Normally, greyhounds can be as tall as 90 cm. There is, however, a small-sized greyhound, which stands only 33cm. Greyhounds e in a variety of colors. Grey and yellowish-brown are the most mon. Others include black, white, blue, red and brown or a mix of these.Greyhounds have smooth body coats, low body fat and are very healthy. Because they’re slim <苗条的> they don’t have the leg problems like other dogs the same height. But they do feel the cold, especially since they would much rather be at home in bed than walking around outside.56. The text is written mainly______.A. to tell people how to raise greyhoundsB. to let people know more about greyhoundsC. to explain why greyhounds are aggressiveD. to describe greyhounds of different colors57. It can be inferred that greyhounds_______.A. love big doghousesB. like staying in bed all dayC. make the best guard dogsD. need some exercise outdoors58. Why does the author say that greyhounds make great pets?A. They are big in size.B. They live a very long life.C. They can run races for some time.D. They are quiet and easy to look after.59. If you keep a pet greyhound, it is important________.A. to keep it slimB. to keep it warmC. to take special care of its legsD. to take it to animal doctors regularlyBMany years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station<加油站>about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register<收款台>, I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery<电池>was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom."Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said."Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.60. The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City_________.A. to visit a friendB. to see his parentsC. to pay at the cash registerD. to have more gas for his car61. The words "took off〞underlined in Paragraph 2 mean "______〞.A. turned offB. moved offC. put upD. set up62. What happened when the author found smoke ing out of his car?A. The battery of the author’s car was dead because_______.A. something went wrong with the lightsB. the meeting lasted a whole dayC. he forgot to turn off the lightsD. he drove too long a distance64. By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show______.A. how to write a thank-you letterB. how to deal with car problemsC. the kind-heartedness of older peopleD. the importance of expressing thanksCA study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 foreign students. It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking. Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant<显著的> problem. The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation<动机>, we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may help because it is different.Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining<保持> or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.65. What is the text mainly about?A. Foreign students have more problems.B. There are many ways to improve English.C. Teaching should meet students’ needs.D. English learning problems should be studied again.66. Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students________.A. had to write their papersB. became better at speakingC. became less interested in readingD. had fewer problems with listening67. We may infer from the last two paragraphs that ________.A. different teaching methods should be usedB. grammar-based teaching seems to be encouragingC. English courses are necessary for foreign studentsD. teaching content should be changed halfway.DSince my retirement<退休> from teaching music in 2001, I have spent a good deal of time painting as an artist. I actually began drawing again in the summer of 1995 when my father died, so perhaps I was trying to recover from the loss of my father, or maybe it was just that it brought back memories of him. In any case, I drew pen and ink animals and landscapes<风景画> much influenced<影响> by Krenkel and St. John for five years. For some strange reason, I had been waiting until my retirement to start doing watercolors again, but as soon as I walked out of the school door for the last time I picked up my brushes and rediscovered Andrew Wyeth, who quickly became my favorite artist. I had looked through all the art books I had on my shelves and found his watercolors to be the closest to how I thought good watercolors should look. So I painted landscapes around Minnesota for three years and tried out many other types of painting. However, watercolors remained my first choice, and I think I did my best work there, showing my paintings at a number of art exhibitions.Art is now together with my piano playing and reading. There is a time for everything in my world, and it is wonderful to have some time doing what I want to do. As Confucious once said, "At seventy I can follow my heart’s desire.〞69. Kill(1)Capital punishment has been in effect since the 1600’s.However, in 1972 the U.S.Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment, which was unconstitutional according to the Eighth Amendment. It was public opinion that the current methods of execution, hanging, electrocution, and facing a firing squad, were too slow and painful upon the person to be executed. The U.S.Supreme Court reversed this decision when a cleaner way to bring about death was found in 1976.This cleaner way is death by lethal injection, which is quick and painless if administered right.(2)Many people have argued for and against capital punishment since it was reinstituted. Some say the death penalty is what the criminal deserves while others object to it because death is irreversible.I feel the death penalty is a good form of justice because only about 250 people a year get the death penalty and they are guilty beyond a doubt and don’t deserve living with the possibility of parole.(3)The sentencing judge or jury are ordered by the Supreme Court to look for specific aggravating and mitigating factors in deciding which convicted murderers should be sentenced to death.S ome of these mitigating factors are the defendant’s motivation, character, personal history, and most of all remorse.Every year approximately 250 new offenders are added to death row.In 1994 there were 2,850 persons awaiting execution.Yet no more than thirty-eight people have been executed a year since 1976.This is a ridiculously low number compared to 199 persons executed in 1935.(4)The reason for this slow execution rate is the process of appeals. From sentencing to execution there is about a seven-to-eight-year wait. The convicts’ cases are reviewed by the state courts and through the federal courts. With all this opportunity for the case to be turned over or the sentence to be changed it is almost impossible for an innocent person to be executed.Only two people have been proved innocent after their execution in the United States. These wrongful deaths occurred in 1918 and 1949.Since then the justice system has undergone a lot o f fine tuning making this extremely unlikely to day.(5)One argument against the death penalty is that it costs less to imprison someone for life than to考证素材execute them. This is a good point that has a 1o t of impact on a lot of people’s views regarding capital punishment since they are the ones footing the bill.through taxes.I personally would not mind paying the little bit extra just so I know for sure that there’s one 1ess murderer on our planet. If the death penalty was done away with, prisoners who should have been executed will be mixed in with other inmates. It would be possible and not too unlikely for them to kill another inmate or possibly a prison guard. If someone is lined up for execution then they more than likely deserve it.They have caused a great deal of grief to the family and friends of the victim or victims and it seems like the only way justice could be served is for the criminal to die.(6)For the person to simply go to jail seems unfair. There they will eat three meals a day, get to watch cable TV and befriend other inmates. They live a pretty decent 1ife in prison and they don’t deserve it.Out of the fifty states in the United States 37 have and use capital punishment.Out of the same fifty states only 18 have 1ife imprisonment without parole. In the other 32 states a person who should’ve been executed can b e released after as 1ittle as 20 years in prison.(7)There are certain standards that are followed in giving out capital punishment. The defendant can not be insane, and the real or criminal intent must be present. Also, minors very rarely receive the death penalty because they are not fully mature and might not know the consequences of their actions. Finally the mentally retarded are very seldom executed. The reason for not executing the retarded is that they often have difficulty defending themselves in court, have problems remembering details, locating witnesses, and testifying credibly on their own behalf.(8)If capital punishment were carried out more it would prove to be the crime deterrent it was partly intended to be.Most criminals would think twice before committing murder if they knew their own 1ives are at stake. As it turns out,as very few people are executed,so the death penalty is not a satisfactory deterrent.During highly publicized death penalty cases the homicide rate is found to go down but it goes back up when the case is over.(9)Thomas Edison,a famous scientist and American hero, helped develop and extensively promoted the electric chair. The electric chair was a popular method of execution from the 1930s to the 1970s.The death penalty is a punishment that will remain active for a long time in考证素材the future, even with all the criticism. It is an ancient way of dealing with extremely serious offences that plague our country today.Hopefully the appeals process will be shortened, but remain effective,so more criminals can be executed, making prospective criminals think twice.II.In this section, there are ten incomplete statements or 自考00600《高级英语》背熟段落

In the first three paragraphs, the author describes the wonderful performance of three rock superstars by the same means. Teenagers see them as icons, praising them endlessly, while adult viewers reject them as sick, which shows the different attitudes towards rock music by teenagers and adults.背诵How do you feel about all this adulation and hero worship? When Mick Jagger’s fans look at him as a high priest or a god, are you with them or against them? Do you share Chris Singer’s almost religious reverence for Bob Dylan? Do you think he – or Dylan – is misguided? Do you reject Alice Cooper as sick? Or are you drawn somehow to this strange clown, perhaps because he asts out your wildest fantasies?

(1)The car pulled up and its driver glared at us with such sullen intensity, such hatred, that I was truly afraid for our lives. He looked like the sort of young man who might kill a president. (2)He was glaring because we had passed him and for that offensive action he pursued us to the next stoplight so as to express his indignation and affirm his masculinity. I was with two women and was afraid for all three of us. It was nearly midnight and we were in a small, sleeping town with no other cars on the road.(3)When the light turned green I raced ahead. He didn‟t merely follow, he chased and with his headlights turned off. No matter what sudden turn I took, he followed. My passengers were silent.I knew they were alarmed, and I prayed that I wouldn‟t be called upon to protect them. In that cheerful frame of mind, I turned off my own lights so I couldn‟t be followed. It was madness. I was responding to a crazy as a crazy.(4)“I‟ll just drive to the police station,”I finally said, and as if those were the magic words, he disappeared.(5)It seems to me that there has recently been an epidemic of auto macho—a competition perceived and expressed in driving. People fight it out over parking spaces. A toll booth becomes a signal for elbowing fenders. And beetle-eyed drivers hunch over their steering wheels, squeezing the rims, glowering, preparing the excuse of not having seen you as they muscle you off the road. Approaching a highway on an entrance ramp recently, I was strong-armed by a trailer truck so immense that its driver all but blew me away by blasting his horn. The behemoth was just inches from my hopelessly mismatched vehicle when I fled for the safety of the shoulder.(6)The odd thing is that long before I was even able to drive, it seemed to me that people were at their finest and most civilized when in their cars. They seemed so orderly and considerate, so reasonable, staying in the right-hand lane unless passing, signaling all intentions. In those days you really eased into highway traffic, and the long, neat rows of cars seemed mobile testimony to the sanity of most people. Perhaps memory fails, perhaps there were always testy drivers, perhaps浙00600# 高级英语试题第3页(共8页)—but everyone didn‟t give you the finger.(7)A most amazing example of driver rage occurred recently in Manhattan. We were four cars abreast, stopped at a traffic light. And there was no moving even when the light had changed. A bus had stopped in the cross traffic, blocking our paths: it was normal-for-New-York-City gridlock. Perhaps impatient, perhaps late for important appointments, three of us nonetheless accepted what, after all, we could not alter. One, however, would not. He would not be helpless. He would go where he was going even if he couldn‟t get there. He got out of his car and strode toward the bus, rapping smartly on its doors. When they opened, he exchanged words with the driver. The doors folded shut. He then stepped in front of the bus, took hold of one of its large windshield wipers and broke it.(8)The bus doors reopened and the driver appeared, apparently giving the fellow a good piece of his mind. If so, the lecture was wasted, for the man started his car and drove directly into the bus. He rammed it. Even though the point at which he struck the bus, the folding doors, was its most vulnerable point, ramming the side of a bus with your car has to rank very high on a futility index. My first thought was that it had to be a rental car.(9)To tell the truth, I could not believe my eyes. The bus driver opened his doors as much as they could be opened and he stepped directly onto the hood of the attacking car, jumping up and down with both his feet. He then retreated into the bus, closing the doors behind him. Obviously a man of action, the car driver backed up and rammed the bus again.(10)It is tempting to blame such aggressive, uncivil and even neurotic behavior, but in our cars we all become a little crazy. How many of us speed up when a driver signals his intention of pulling in front of us? Are we resentful and anxious to pass him? How many of us try to squeeze in, or race along the shoulder at a lane merger?(11)What is it within us that gives birth to such antisocial behavior and why, all of a sudden, have so many drivers gone around the bend? My friend, a Manhattan psychiatrist, calls it“a Rambo pattern. People are running around thinking the American way is to take the law into your own hands when anyone does anything wrong. And what constitutes …wrong‟? Anything that cramps your style.”(12)It seems to me that it is a new America we see on the road now. It has the mentality of a hoodlum and the backbone of a coward. The car is its weapon and hiding place, and it is still a浙00600# 高级英语试题第4页(共8页)symbol even in this. Road Rambos no longer represent a self-reliant, civil people tooling around in family cruisers. In fact, there aren‟t families in these machines that charge headlong with their brights on in broad daylight, demanding we get out of their way. Bullies are loners, and they have perverted our liberty of the open road into drivers‟ license. They represent an America that derides the values of decency and good manners, then roam the highways riding shotgun and shrieking freedom. By allowing this to happen, the rest of us approve.Ⅱ.In this section, there are ten incomplete statements or questions, followed by four choices marked A,B,C and D.
