Together we will learn about rhythm, melody and harmony and how they all work together to determine the mood, pace and energy in a piece of music! We will also explore dynamics, tempo and pitch and how these elements come together to build a piece of music.During the concert, everyone will have a chance to make some music – we’ll sing, conduct, and clap along with the orchestra! The program will feature the music of some of the great "building block" composers of classical music such as Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven and Haydn. Using building blocks, we will discover the ABC's of music.I hope everyone will leave the concert hearing music in a brand new way!The Education Department at the Nashville Symphony has put together this study guide to help you prepare for the performance. We have worked together to develop activities and lesson plans that directly connect with the music and concepts that will be explored at the concert. She is also Music Director of the Cleveland area Heights Chamber Orchestra.With the Canton Symphony, Corcoran conducts Education and Family concerts and select performances of the Classical, Cameo and Casual Fridays series. She is Music Director of the Canton Youth Symphony and also presents Conversations in Music.During the 05-06 and 04-05 seasons, Corcoran competed in the VIII Cadaquès Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain, worked with the Cleveland Opera as cover conductor for productions of Romeo & Juliet, Madame Butterfly and The Elixir of Love, guest conducted at the University of Akron and attended the Lucerne Festival's Masterclass in Conducting, focusing on contemporary orchestral literature with Pierre Boulez.Before arriving in Canton, Corcoran was Assistant Music Director of the Nashville Opera and Founder / Music Director of the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra.Corcoran has conducted orchestras throughout the Midwest and the east coast. Corcoran received her Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Indiana University. She conducted the National Symphony Orchestra as a debut conductor in the National Conducting Institute where she worked with Leonard Slatkin in 2004. Corcoran has participated in several Conductor's Guild and American Symphony Orchestra League workshops and is also a former fellow of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida. At the age of 15 he gave his first solo piano performance.Brahms, throughout his career, made lasting friends with many of the leading musicians and composers of the time including Robert and Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt and Joseph Joachim.Brahms was a conductor, composer, pianist and scholar of music, longing for social respectability while largely devoted to composing new works.His choral works, chamber music and symphonies today are major works in the classical repertoire. His Handel Variations, German Requiem, Violin Concerto, Double Concerto and his numerous symphonies are played today as inspirational and seminal works.He died in Vienna, which he made his home, in 1897.ABOUT THE MUSIC:Hungarian Dance No. 5 is the most famous and recognized of Brahms twenty-one lively and rhythmic dance tunes. Brahms based these compositions on folk songs and music he had heardamong the people of remote and far flung villages and outposts.Brahms originally wrote this collection of dances for four-handed piano and later adapted some for full orchestra.Listen for the joyous and party-like rhythms. Imagine the colorful clothes and people enjoying music, dance and their community.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756 - 1791)ABOUT THE COMPOSER:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of our most important composers, was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1756. He soon demonstrated his remarkable musical gifts as a child. At the age of five and six he was performing for Austrian royalty. He toured through Europe astonishing audiences with his technical proficiency on the piano and as a composer. Before he was ten years old, he had become an international music star, published music, written operas and was in great demand wherever he went. Mozart's prolific output of music included symphonies, piano concertos, and operas. Haydn, the great composer and teacher called Mozart "the greatest composer known to me in person or by name; he has taste and, what is more, the greatest knowledge of composition."Mozart eventually moved to Vienna where he lived the rest of his life. There, he continued his composition and performing. His last works include a clarinet concerto, his final four symphonies and his unfinished "Requiem". Mozart died in 1791, at the age of 35 and wasin 1891. He died in 1893.An overture is a musical introduction to an opera or musical theatre. It often includes the most important and memorable parts of the entire piece.Cosi Fan Tutte Overture was first performed in 1787, but the response was not what Mozart had hoped for. The public adoration for this work would come later. And today it is one of the most recognized of all operatic works!The story of the opera is based on ancient tales and legends about relationships, loyalty and jealousy. The music includes beautiful and inspirational melodies and arias that are often the favorite tunes of opera fans. The music is lush and large and emotional and colorful. Listen for the wonderful melodies and tunes that we can walk out of the concert hall humming to ourselves.Felix Mendelssohn(1809- 1847)ABOUT THE COMPOSER:Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1809. He was born into a noted and prosperous family of business and religious leaders. His family converted from Judaism to the Lutheran church in order to gain more social acceptance.Mendelssohn was a prolific and creative composer. His "Wedding March" from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of the most famous tunes from the classical repertoire, leading many a bride down the wedding aisle.Felix was a gifted young man, playing piano and violin. He traveled to Paris to study with Mozart, Bach and others. He composed eleven symphonies, five operas and many other chamber, piano and choral works.His musical life was filled with accomplishment and he is considered one of the great composers of the entire 19th century.The music was composed based upon Shakespeare's romantic comedy. The story portrays the adventures of young lovers, royalty and the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest.The scherzo section of this famous work introduces the fairy-world and moonlit forest of the story with fast moving musical passages for the woodwinds.Listen for the exciting and humorous melodies depicting comedy, romance and surprise. Most of all listen for the fast moving rhythms and how the speed (tempo) changes to help tell the musical story.Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827)ABOUT THE COMPOSER::Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770. As a music prodigy he first studied with his father Johann and by the age of 11 had published his first music.A student of Haydn, Salieri and others, he had his public debut in 1795. As a pianist, he was said to have great fire and brilliance. Writing for his own instrument, the piano, he was at his most original in this period including the "Pathetique" and "Moonlight Sonata". These years also saw the composition of his first three piano concertos, his first two symphonies and a set of six string quartets.It was in 1802 that he began to recognize his impending hearing loss and deafness. It caused a tremendous crisis in his confidence and faith. Yet, he came through this dark period to create his great, "heroic" works including The Eroica Symphony (No. 3), Symphony No. 5, string quartets and his opera Fidelio.The years after 1812 were largely less productive. Yet, his reputation went far beyond Vienna. When he died in early 1827, ten thousand people are said to have attended the funeral. He had become a public figure, as no composer had done before. Unlike composers of the preceding generation, he had never been nobility's "property" and had lived into the time of the artist as public figure and "star" and the property of all.ABOUT THE MUSIC:Symphony No. 9 (Excerpt from the Fourth Movement) contains one of the most famous musical phrases or tunes of all time! This symphony is also considered by many to be one of the greatest pieces of art ever created.And when Beethoven wrote this most famous of work he was already completely deaf.We hear this music in movies, comedy and TV.
