Self-Reliance, Self-Confidence, and the Balance of VirtuesThe pursuit of self-improvement is a noble and admirable goal, one that has been extolled by philosophers, poets, and thinkers throughout the ages. However, the path to self-actualization is fraught with potential pitfalls, and it is important to strike a delicate balance between the virtues of self-reliance, self-confidence, andself-discipline, and the vices of self-aggrandizement and self-absorption.At the heart of this quest for self-improvement lies the virtue of self-reliance. To be truly self-reliant is to possess the inner strength and fortitude to navigate the challenges of life without relying solely on the support or validation of others. It is the ability to think for oneself, to make decisions based on one's own moral compass, and to take responsibility for the consequences of one's actions. Self-reliance is the foundation upon which true independence and autonomy are built, and it is a quality that is highly prized in many cultures and societies. However, self-reliance can easily veer into the realm of self-aggrandizement, where the individual becomes so enamored with their own abilities and accomplishments that they lose sight of the contributions and perspectives of others. This is the trap of self-absorption, where the individual becomes so focused on their own needs and desires that they fail to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of those around them.Closely linked to self-reliance is the virtue of self-confidence, which is the belief in one's own abilities and the conviction to pursue one's goals and dreams without fear of failure or the judgment of others. Self-confidence is a powerful tool that can enable individuals to overcome obstacles, take calculated risks, and achieve remarkable feats. It is the foundation upon which true leadership and innovation are built, and it is a quality that is highly prized in many professional and personal contexts.Yet, self-confidence can also morph into the vice of self-conceit, where the individual becomes so convinced of their own superiority that they fail to recognize the limitations of their knowledge and abilities. This is the trap of arrogance, where the individual becomes so caught up in their own sense of importance that they fail to listen to the perspectives and insights of others, and ultimately stagnate in their own narrow worldview. The final virtue in this delicate balance is self-discipline, which is theability to set and achieve personal goals, to delay gratification, and to persevere in the face of adversity. Self-discipline is the bedrock upon which true self-improvement is built, as it enables individuals to develop the skills, knowledge, and resilience necessary to navigate the challenges of life. It is a quality that is highly prized in many educational and professional contexts, as it is seen as a key indicator of an individual's ability to succeed. However, self-discipline can also veer into the realm of self-deprivation, where the individual becomes so consumed with achieving their goals that they neglect their own physical, emotional, and social needs. This is the trap of self-denial, where the individual becomes so focused on the pursuit of perfection that they fail to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of their own humanity. The key to navigating this delicate balance lies in the ability to recognize and embrace the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals, including oneself. It is the recognition that self-reliance, self-confidence, and self-discipline are not ends in themselves, but rather tools to be used in the service of a greater good – the cultivation of a more just, equitable, and compassionate world.By cultivating a deep sense of empathy and compassion, individuals can learn to balance their own needs and desires with the needs and desires of those around them. They can recognize that true self-improvement is not about individual achievement, but rather about the collective betterment of humanity. They can strive for excellence not for its own sake, but for the sake of making a positive impact on the world around them.In the end, the pursuit of self-improvement is a noble and worthy endeavor, but it must be tempered by a deep sense of humility and a recognition of the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals. By striking this delicate balance, we can become not just self-reliant, self-confident, and self-disciplined, but also self-aware, self-reflective, and self-transcendent – individuals who are able to harness the power of their own abilities in the service of a greater good.。

Title: Self-Reliance: The Key to Personal Development。

In an age where dependency is often mistaken for collaboration, the virtue of self-reliance stands out as a fundamental cornerstone for individual success andintegrity. Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American philosopher and poet, profoundly advocated for self-reliance, defining itas the need for each individual to avoid conformity andfalse consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas. In this essay, I will explore the significance of self-reliance through various dimensions of life including education, career, and personal growth, and how it shapes a resilient, capable, and independent individual.Self-Reliance in Education。

Education serves as the primary platform where self-reliance should be cultivated. In academic settings, students are often faced with challenges that test theirresolve, intelligence, and ability to adapt. Instead of relying solely on educators or peers, students who take initiative to learn independently tend to excel. For example, when confronted with a complex problem in mathematics, a self-reliant student might utilize resources like books, online tutorials, and interactive software to grasp difficult concepts. This proactive approach not only builds a strong academic foundation but also instills a lifelong habit of self-learning and problem-solving.Moreover, self-reliance in education fosters creativity and critical thinking. By challenging oneself to think independently, learners develop unique perspectives instead of echoing the thoughts of others. This ability to think independently is invaluable in higher education and research where innovation is highly esteemed.Self-Reliance in Career。

The covered wagon rolls along the muddy path. The gentle motion of the wagon almost puts you to sleep. Then the wagon hits a bump in the road, and you're brought back to reality. lt seems like years since you left your familiar neighborhood back East. You often worry that your family won't have enough to live on out West. But deep down you know that you have all you need. Along with all your supplies, you've got the most important quality of all: self-reliance.

They didn't have all the comforts of their homes back East. These brave pioneers had to build their own houses, invent new farm tools and make clothes and household items out of the resources available. As a result, Americans developed a "can-do" spirit and an optimism about their ability to handle any challenge. They would jokingly say that a difficult problem can be solved immediately; an impossible one may take a little longer.

Reflections on Emerson's "Self-Reliance"Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance" is a profound exploration of individuality and the quest for personal freedom. Reading this essay feels like stepping into a world where the individual is the creator of his own destiny, a world where the power to choose and act lies solely within oneself.Emerson's argument for self-reliance is built upon the premise that society often tries to conform individuals into predefined molds, limiting their potential and creativity. He calls for a rejection of these societal norms and a return to one's true self, arguing that it is only through self-reliance that one can truly find happiness and fulfillment. One of the most striking aspects of Emerson's essay is his emphasis on the importance of trusting one's own instincts and intuitions. He believes that these inner voices, often drownedout by external noise, hold the key to personal growth and development. By ignoring these voices, he argues, individuals risk becoming lost in a world of conformity and mediocrity.Emerson also emphasizes the importance of taking risks and embracing uncertainty. He believes that true self-reliance requires the courage to step into the unknown, to embrace change, and to pursue one's passions and dreams. This, he argues, is the only path to true happiness and fulfillment. In conclusion, Emerson's "Self-Reliance" is a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to oneself and trusting one's own instincts and intuitions. It encourages us to embrace risk and uncertainty, to pursue our passions and dreams, and to create our own destiny. In a world that often tries to conform us into predefined molds, Emerson's words serve as a beacon of light, guiding us towards a path of personal freedom and fulfillment.

Self-reliance_Emerson(中文版)自立_爱默生

Hemingway uses fewer words and lets the effect of his style speak for itself. Theme: life as nothingness(existentialism adherents believe that life has no higher purpose. The world is indifferent to men, one must look to himself to create meaning, if it is possible to ...at all.)Hemingway suggest that life has no meaning and that man is just an insignificant speck in a great sea of nothingness.

1. Criticizing traditional customs and stubborn perspective rooted in the society and human’s minds Not only the society Emerson criticizes but also some men who lose self-reliance and self-confidence. Those men find no worth in himself even after they built a tower or sculptured a marble god and feel poor when stand before those things created by themselves. In fact, those are all theirs. “The picture waits for my verdict: it is not to command me, but I am to settle its claims to praise.”
3. Ways to be self-reliant
Emerson points out, in his latter part of his essay, that only common youth are not enough to create a new society. What is needed is the youth endowed with self-reliance. Whoso would be a man must be a non conformist. Emerson several times emphasizes this necessarily of being a non conformist. Meanwhile, he presents several ways in the essay of being selfreliant. First, a person ought to go upright and speaks to truth in all ways. Second, trust your self. Third, insist yourself; never imitate.
2. Eulogizing the youth
Emerson points, “the man and women who shall renovate life and our society state are most from those who posses new ideas and self-reliance”. And truly, it demands something godlike in them who have cast off the common motives of humanity and has ventured to trust himself for a taskmaker. Only those youth with independent spirit can eliminate the rooted traditional and stubborn customs and regulations to turn the society into a better one.
1. Criticizing traditional customs and stubborn perspective rooted in the society and human’s minds
To begin the essay, Emerson shows us such a society, where people speak not what they but man thought. That’s to say, people think as others think, do as others do. In Emerson’s eyes, the society lacks self-reliance and creation, which drive the world forward. People complain that they always disturbed by so called scared and traditional customs. That’s funny. “What have I to do with the sacredneof traditions, if I live wholly from within?” That’s true. If a person lives with self-reliance, he won’t be disturbed by so called traditions. Wha non conformist. But the cruelneexisting in the society is that for nonconformity, the world whips you its displeasure.
It is easy to see that a greater self-reliance must work a revolution in all the offices and relations of men; in their religion; in their pursuits; their modes of living; their association; in their property; in their speculative views.
Self-Reliance
by -__-
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803—1882)
In his essay Self-Reliance, there exist three parts of the main ideas:
1. Criticizing traditional customs and stubborn perspective rooted in the society and human’s minds 2. Eulogizing the youth 3. Ways to be self-reliant
Through the whole essay, Emerson makes us believe: with the exercise of self-reliance, new powers shall appear. Just as he says in the end of his essay:
Although essays aren't as popular as when Emerson was alive in the mid-1800's, this essay has become one of the author's most notable achievements. Emerson's philosophy as expressed in "Self-Reliance" embraced a combination of nonconformity to social trends. Also a great believer in the 'light within', Emerson gives continual nods to a divine Providence while holding fast to man's inherent goodness, and the necessity of holding to one's own convictions despite the inclinations and pressures of the crowd.
