The Merchant Of V eniceAs we known that the merchant of V enice is one of Shakespeare’s most important works. It not only reflects the conflicts between the capitalists 资本家and usurers高利贷者at the beginning of the capitalist society but expresses the author’s humanist idea on money, law and religion in capitalist society.Shylock in this play is the antagonist. He is the model of usurer. Most people read him as a bogeyman魔鬼, a clownish滑稽的Jewish stereotype. He is selfish, curtly草率地, avaricious贪婪的and niggard吝啬的. Once he has the chance to revenge his foe. He will try his best to make the other into deathtrap. And most of his speech is coarse粗俗的, and sometimes “mean”. All of this makes people take unkindly to him. Being a pagan who lives in Christian society he has strong emotion on the enthusiasm of raising Jewish people’s status地位. Living in this society, he suffers too much public humiliation疏远and oppression压迫. In such condition, his “malic e恶意” is much more reasonable.Actually, his sense of decency礼貌has been fractured挫伤的by the persecution迫害he endures. Comparatively, those kindness and wisdom Christian, in fact, have another hideous feature. So, in my mind, Shylock is a man who is worth sympathizing.。

Her shopping had tired her and the basket had grown heavier with every step of the way home. In the lift her thoughts were on lunch and a good rest, but when she got out at her own floor, both were forgotten in her sudden discovery that her front door was open. She was thinking that she must tell her daily maid 〔女仆〕the next morning to lock the door, and then she remembered that she had gone shopping after the maid had left and she knew that she had turned both keys in their locks. She walked slowly into the hall and at once noticed that all the room doors were open, yet following her regular practice she had shut them before going out. Looking into the living room she saw a sight of confusion(混乱)over by her writing desk. It was as clear as daylight then that burglars〔窃贼〕had forced into the house during her absence. Her first thought was to go round all the roomslooking for the thieves, but then she decided that at her age it might be more reasonable to have someone with her, so she went to fetch the doorman from his basement(地下室). By this time her legs were beginning to shake, so she sat down and accepted a cup of a very strong tea, while she telephoned to the police. Then her sense regained, she was ready to set off with the doorman’s help to search for any thieves who might still be hiding in her flat.1. The first thing she wanted to do, after she was sure that the house was opened by someone, was .A. force the burglars outB. look around the rooms for the thievesC. go to the doorman for helpD. sit down for a cup of tea in order to calm downBIf you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare〞“Samuel Johnson〞and “Webster〞, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English—William the Conqueror. Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon(or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would be closed to German. But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even show a distinction(区别)between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating. When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more “foreign〞than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’s ambition.1. The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were .A. Welsh and ScottishB. Nordic and GermanicC. Celtic and Old EnglishD. Anglo-Saxon and Germanic2. Which of the following groups of words are, by inference, rooted in French?A. President, lawyer, beef.B. President, bread, water.C. Bread, field, sheep.D. Folk, field, now.3. Why does France appear less foreign than Germany to Americans on their first visit to Europe?A. Most advertisements in France appear in English.B. They know little of history of the English language.C. Many French words are similar to English ones.D. They know French better than German.4. What is the subject discussed in the text?A. The history of Great Britain.B. The similarity between English and French.C. The rule of English by William the Conqueror.D. The French influences on the English language.Ⅳ. 短文改错Every morning John goes to work by trains. 11The Merchant of Venice

11The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice"The Merchant of V enice"is a play by Shakespeare,he is Britain's the most outstanding Renaissance masters.Shakespeare's play, The play tells a story that happens in Italy. It explored the timeless topic of money and love. Money is the world's most valuable things .There is something even more precious than money? Rich and moving story of family ties, witty dialogue, the plot turn, exaggerated the circumstances of Comedy, romance and legend is full of color. Is intertwined with friendship, love, love the world and lead us to understanding what is important in life.In the play ,a moneyless young Venetian, Bassanio, is making preparations to propose to Portia, a rich beauty of Belmont. He needs money and appeals to his friend Antonio, a merchant of Venice, for help. But Antonio’s money is invested in ships at sea. To help Bassanio in his courtship, he borrows money from Shylock the Jewish usurer. Shylock, who has been insulted by Antonio and other Christians, however, agrees to lend the money on the condition that if the loan is not paid in time, he may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body.In this single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a natural born monster. In one of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues, On the other hand, Shylock’s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs done to him by murdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light. Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure.I think Shylock suffers much discrimination for he is a Jew. It‘s unfair. All men were born equally.I can learn much from the play. Money is important, but there are many far more important things in this world. Do not be fooled by the surface. In our real live we should threat everyone equally and do not have color vision to look at other people.。
