Travelling abroad一、阅读理解In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher gave the class an assignment to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up.Jean’s father was a crop dusting pilot in the little farming munity in North ern California where she was raised, and Jean was very interested in airplanes and flying. She poured her heart into her report and included all of her dreams. She wanted to be a crop dusting pilot, make parachute jumps(跳伞), and be an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an "F" on it. The teacher told her it was a "fairy tale" and that none of the occupations she listed were women’s jobs. Jean was devastated and humiliated. One day in her senior year of high school, her English teacher Mrs Dorothy Slaton gave the class an assignment. "If you had unlimited money, unlimited access to the finest schools, and unlimited talents and abilities, what would you do?" Jean felt a rush of her old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down all her old dreams. The teacher leaned forward over her desk and said, "You do have unlimited abilities and talents. When you leave school, if you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you. You can have what you want if you want it enough."The hurt and fear of years of discouragement went away because of what Mrs Slaton had said. Jean felt excited and a little scared. She stayed after class and went up to the teacher’s desk. Jean thanked Mrs Slaton and told her about her dream of being a pilot. Mrs Slaton half rose and slapped the desk top. "Then do it!" she said.So Jean did. It didn’t happen overnight. It took her 10 years of hard work. It wasn’t in Jean’s nature to stand up for herself when someone refused or humiliated her. Instead, she would quietly try to find another way.She became a private pilot and then flew planes as a co-pilot (副驾驶员). In 1978, she became one of the first three female pilot trainees ever accepted by United Airlines and one of the only 50 women airline pilots in the nation at that time. Some years later, Jean Harper became a Boeing 737 captain for United Airlines.1.When Jean Harper was in the third grade, _________.A.it was mon for women to be airline pilotsB. her father advised her to be a pilot like him in the futureC. she was unsure about what she wanted to be when she grew upD. she was deeply hurt by her teacher’s ment on her dreams2.What was Mrs Slaton’s reaction when she learned about Jean Harper’s dream?A. 落堕市安心阳光实验学校Unit 5 Travelling abroad阅读理解组块专练——练速度(限时:30分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解ADriving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting butnerveracking (神经紧张的). I had never been to such an amazing national park before, yet I wasn't the most athletic person, so I knew that I couldn't stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun andadventurous experience. The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together. The great thing about nature is that, it's just you, the views, and the people around you. There's nothing there to bother you and it's the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite has 5 of the world's highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it's formed in ways that almost take your breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking (窥探) out. It's definitely something you wouldn't want to miss.Yosemite isn't the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It's a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers.语篇解读:文章记叙了作者一家去约塞米蒂国家公园游览的所见所闻,与家人一起出游其乐无穷。

Unit 5 Travelling abroadⅠ.阅读理解(2018浙江,A)In 1812,the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain.People had been writing novels for a century —most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字) rate in England was under 50%.Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.〞Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad.In 1870,when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters—from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones.Today Dickens’greatness is unchallenged.Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to 1901 ; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a distinguished writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches,it is possible—and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one.1.Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century?A.They were difficult to understand.B.They were popular among the rich.C.They were seen as nearly worthless.D.They were written mostly by women.2.Dickens is compared with the Mona Lisa in the text to stress .A.his reputation in FranceB.his interest in modern artC.his success in publicationD.his importance in literature3.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To remember a great writer.B.To introduce an English novel.C.To encourage studies on culture.D.To promote values of the Victorian age. 语篇解读:查尔斯·狄更斯在世界文学史上占据着重要地位。

Unit 5 Travelling abroadⅠ.Ⅱ.阅读理解Holidays are really important. Many of us have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways. But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet. For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult. The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed (承诺) to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children’s welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed. While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning. In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council(委员会) is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time” for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning. We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.1.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The importance of the holiday.B.The holiday reduction plan.C.The balance of holidays and school days.D.The necessity of cutting down the long holiday.2.The underlined word “they” in th e second paragraph refers to .A.holidaysB.familiesC.salariesD.benefits3.The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students .A.ob tain the cheapest holidays without additional costsB.get a chance to spend 8 weeks a term with teachers in schoolC.benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environmentD.have more school days to receive free school meals4.It can be inferred from the text that .A.working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their childrenB.some school staff may say “No” to the plans for a shorter summer holidayC.the long summer holiday gives teache rs and students real “down time”D.the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried outWhen many of us take a vacation , relaxing is what we want. But we usually return home tired and weak. It doesn’t have to be this way.Come home refreshed after an active trip!Don’t be too tired!Active vacations are often the most relaxing of all. It’s all in defining(定义) what an active vacation is. We don’t expect you to run slowly, or go backpacking. Well, we ask the vacationers who are not active not to sit too long but to spend two to four hours a day doing things, such as walking the city streets, exploring a nature protect, going to a zoo or biking along the ocean. These kinds of activities aren’t just good for your physical health. They improve your mental health, even your spiritual health. And they make vacations memorable and worthwhile. And after all, isn’t that what you want from your vacation? Here are some fresh ideas to make your vacations as pleasurable as they are active and healthy.A walk at dawn or dusk is necessary. Try to make this a daily routine of life away from home, and you will ensure yourself both physical and spiritual adding. Don’t allow yourself to spend your entire time sitting in front of the water. Whether it is the ocean, a swimming pool, or a tree-lined lake, make sure you get into the water for swimming or games or even walking. Heck, merely standing in waist-high water is a good exercise, thanks to the action of the water. And you will feel so much more alive! Many of us spend a large piece of our vacations on the road, either getting to and from our destinations, or using the car for sightseeing. But no matter how beautiful the scenery is, great, memorable vacations don’t happen in a car sea t. Don’t wait for tiredness or nature’s call to get you to pull over. Frequently get out and stretch, walk, picnic, shop, visit, and have fun. It’s important for your health and energy, and it makes travelling a lot more active and interesting. 5.The writer writes the text mainly to____.A. introduce the relationship between vacations and healthB. tell us how to make our vacations relaxingC. show us where we should go for our vacationsD. explain to us why we feel tired when traveling6.What does the und erlined word “refreshed” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Full and excited.B. Pleasant but tired.C. Feeling less tired.D. Feeling regretted.7.What advantage can “the activities” in Paragraph 5 bring?A. They can improve our health as well as making us feel easy.B. They just can keep us feel excited and confident.C. They can bring us more chances to get out.D. They can save us much time and make the trip meaningful.8.In the last paragraph, the writer seems to advise us to____.A. go on vacation by carB. not to spend too much time on the roadC. make a trip on footD. get out of the car for sightseeingⅡ.语法填空I enjoy doing physical training in my free time.
