Unit 1 Caring for Our EarthPart I Read the following passage aloud.“If it exists, it must be possible”, asserts Amory Lovins, co-founder and chief scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute think tank. He is talking about my company. Fellow industrialists, I dare say, thought my ambition impossible to realize when fourteen years ago I described my aspirations for Interface Inc. to turn into what it actually is becoming today. Indeed, around then, the CEO of a major competitor looked at me in the eye, and said, “Ray, you are a dreamer.” Yet, as Amory says, “If it exists …”The “impossible” that exists today is a petroleum-intensive carpet manufacturer (for both energy and raw material) that has reduced net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 88 percent, in absolute tons, and its water usage by 79 percent since 1996, even as sales have grown by two-thirds and earnings have doubled. In 1994 Interface set out on a mission “to be the first industrial company that, by its deeds, shows the entire industrial world what sustainability is, in all its dimensions: people, process, product, profit, and place.” Our definition of sustainability is to operate our petro- intensive company so as to take from the Earth only that which is naturally and rapidly renewable, and to do no harm to the biosphere.Cumulatively, we have avoided $372 million in costs by eliminating waste, in a quest that is half way to achieving waste-free perfection by 2020. We define waste as any cost that does not add value for our customers. This translates ambitiously into doing everything right the first time, every time. We even define energy that still comes from fossil fuels as waste, something to be eliminated. Indeed, while offsets have a critical role to play in helping Interface (and, indeed, all of us) to reach our sustainability goals, we will not achieve them until we begin to redefine fossil fuel energy in this way. Sounds incredible? Remember, “If itexists …”Part II. TOPIC Caring for Our EarthSection One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Caring for Our Earth”.1.What types of energy are popular in your country? For example, coal, gas, nuclear power. What does your house or apartment use?2.Does your community offer a recycling program? Do you think recycling is an importantservice for communities to provide? Why or why not?3.In your opinion, what can cities like Beijing and Qingdao do to improve their air quality?4.How are products packaged in our country? For example, how do you usually buy milk, electronic equipment and clothing? Are they good for our earth? Why or why not?5.Do you agree that our country will be short of fresh water in the future? Why or why not?6.What should be done in order to prevent the climate change?Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:Global warming may be the most harmful environmental problem human beings have created. Please discuss its causes, consequences and what we can do to reduce it. During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. Your performance will be judged according to your contributions to the discussion.Unit 2 Nobel Prize WinnersPart I Read the following passage aloud.Albert Einstein was more than just curious though. He had the patience and determination that kept him at things longer than most others. Other children would build houses of cards up to 4 stories tall before the cards would lose balance and the whole structure would come falling down. Maja watched in wonder as her brother Albert methodically built his card buildings to 14 stories. Later he would say, “It‟s not that I‟m so smart, it‟s just that I stay with problems longer.”One advantage Albert Einstein‟s developing mind enjoyed was the opportunity to communicate with adults in an intellectual way. His uncle, an engineer, would come to the house, and Albert would join in the discussions. His thinking was also stimulated by a medical student who came over once a week for dinner and lively chats. At a ge 12, Albert Einstein came upon a set of ideas that impressed him as “holy.” It was a little book on Euclidean plane geometry. The concept that one could prove theorems of angles and lines that were in no way obvious made an “indescribable impression” on the young student. He adopted mathematics as the tool he would use to pursue his curiosity and prove what he would discover about the behavior of the universe. He was convinced that beauty lies in the simplicity. Perhaps this insight was the real power of his genius. Albert Einstein looked for the beauty of simplicity in the apparently complex nature and saw truths that escaped others. While the expression of his mathematics might be accessible to only a few sharp minds in the science, Albert could condense the essence of his thoughts so anyone could understand.Part II. TOPIC Nobel Prize WinnersSection One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Nobel Prize Winners”.7.Have you ever thought to win a big prize in the future, and what do you plan to do toachieve the goal?8.How many Nobel Prize Winners do you know? Who do you admire most? Why?9.What would you do if you were awarded the Nobel Prize?10.W hat do you think is the most important quality of a successful scientist?11.E instei n once said: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keepmoving.” How do you understand this statement?12.H ow could you find the beauty of simplicity in the apparently complex nature? Could yougive some examples?Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:What preparations should a university student make for future success?During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. Your performance will be judged according to your contributions to the discussion.Unit 3 Famous Brand NamesPart I Read the following passage aloud.American mothers have long believed that when it comes to washing out the mouths of naughty children, nothing beats Ivory Soap. This is because its reputation for being safe, mild, and pure is as solid and spotless as the marble of the Lincoln Memorial. It doesn‟t even taste all that bad. And should you drop it into a tubful of cloudy, child-colored water, not to worry — it floats.Ivory Soap is an American institution, about as widely recognized as the Washington Monument and far more well respected than Congress. It had already attained this noble status when Theodore Roosevelt was still a rough-riding cowboy in North Dakota. Introduced in 1879 as an inexpensive white soap intended to rival the quality of imported soaps, it was mass marketed by means of one of the first nationwide advertising campaigns. People were told that Ivory was “so pure that it floats,” and the notion took hold. As a result, at least half a dozen generations of Americans have gotten themselves clean with Ivory. So many hands, faces, and baby bottoms have been washed with Ivory that their numbers beat the imagination. Not even Proctor & Gamble knows how many billions of bars of Ivory have been sold. The company keeps a precise count, however, of the billions of dollars it earns. Annual sales of Ivory Soap, Ivory Snow, Crest toothpaste, Folger‟s coffee, and the hundreds of other products now marketed under the Proctor & Gamble umbrella exceed thirty billion dollars.Part II. TOPIC Famous Brand NamesSection One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Famous Brand Names”.13.C an you name some famous brands? Why do people like them?14.D o you think college students should pursue famous brands? Why or why not?15.S ome famous brands have a very long history. Why are they so popular amonggenerations of people?16.H ow can a national famous brand build its name in a foreign country?17.W hy do many people choose pirated stuff of famous brands instead of the genuine? Whatdo you think of it?18.A ccording to you, what kind of things are worth spending money on?Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:What are the secrets of business success?During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. Your performance will be judged according to your contributions to the discussion.Unit 4Cloning and EthicsPart I Read the following passage aloud.Antinori shot to fame seven years ago helping grandmothers give birth using donor eggs. Later he pioneered the use of mice to nurture the sperm of men with poor fertility. He is clearly no ordinary scientist but a showman who thrives on controversy and pushing reproductive biology to the limits. And that of course is one reason why he‟s seen as being so dangerous. However, his idea of using cloning to combat infertility is not as mad as it sounds. Many people have a hard job seeing the point of reproductive cloning. But for some couples, cloning represents the only hope of having a child carrying their genes, and scientists like Antinori are probably right to say that much of our opposition to cloning as a fertility treatment is irrational. In future we may want to change our minds and allow it in special circumstances. But only when the science is ready. And that‟s the real problem. Five years on from Dolly, the science of cloning is still stuck in the dark ages. The failure rate is a shocking 97 percent and deformed babies all too common. Even when cloning works, nobody understands why. So forget the complex moral arguments. To begin cloning people now, before even the most basic questions have been answered, is simply a waste of time and energy. This is not o say that Antinori will fail, only that if he succeeds it is likely to be at an unacceptably high price. Hundreds of eggs and embryos will be wasted and lots of women will go through difficult pregnancies resulting in miscarriages or abortions. A few years from now techniques will have improved and the wasteful loss won‟t be as excessive. But rightnow there seems to be little anyone can do to keep the cloners at bay.Part II. TOPIC Cloning and EthicsSection One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Cloning and Ethics”.1.Do you want a clone of yourself? Explain.2.What kind of people are in favor of cloning science?3.Do you think a cloned Einstein would be a great person? Why or why not?4.Do you think cloning is against ethics? Why or why not?5.Can cloning prolong people's life? Why or why not?6.Should we legalize cloning? Why or why not?Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:What are the pros and cons of cloning?During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. Your performance will be judged according to your contributions to the discussion.Unit 5 Lifelong EducationPart I Read the following passage aloud.I‟d like to take some calculus, too. I have absolutely no ability in that direction and not much interest, either, but there‟s something going on in mathematics that I don‟t understand, and I‟d like to find out what it is. My report cards won‟t be mailed to my father and mother, so I won‟t have to worry about marks. I bet I‟ll do better than when they were mailed. There are some literary classics I ought to read and I never will, unless I‟m forced to by a good professor, so I‟ll take a few courses in English literature. I took a course that featured George Gordon Byron, usually referred to now as “Lord Byron”, and I‟d like to take that over again. I did very well in it the first time. I actually read all of Don Juan and have never gotten over how great it was. I know I could get an A in that if I took it over. I‟d like to have a few easy courses. My history is very weak, and I‟d want several history courses. I‟m not going to break my back over them, but I‟d like to be refres hed about the broad outline of history. When someone says sixteenth century to me, I‟d like to be able to associate it with some names and events. This is just a little conversational conceit, but that‟s life.If I can find a good teacher, I‟d certainl y want to go back over English grammar and usage. He‟d have to be good, because you might not think so sometimes, but I know a lot about using the language. Still, there are times when I‟m stumped. I was wondering the other day what part of speech the word “please” is in the sentence, “Please don‟t take me seriously.”Part II. TOPIC Lifelong EducationSection One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Lifelong Education”.1.Do you think education is important in your life? Can you cite some examples to illustrateyour viewpoint?2.Is college education the only way to success? Is it worth the price?3.If you had chance to continue learning after graduation, what subject do you like tochoose? Cairo with its complex system of streets and lanes, its quarters and markets is like a labyrinth invented by ancient storytellers. Hundreds of mosques —many of which are masterpieces of Islamic architecture, old neighborhoods with houses boxed together, huge apartment buildings on the outskirts and the Nile calmly running through it; all are part of this overcrowded city. With a mild sense of humor around a deep core of understanding of human nature, Nagat takes control of my sightseeing schedule. Every morning punctually at nine o‟clock, I can depend on seeing her short, solid frame outside the hotel lobby, her round face turning into a big smile as soon as she sees me coming down the stairs. Most every day, she wears an earth tone-colored Jellaba. Her movements are energetic and she doesn‟t waste any time. Her determined approach seems to have grown on a bed of economy, on the necessity to get as much done as she possibly can. What becomes clear to me soon as she drives me from museum to pyramid, from one part of town to the opposite, is this: she is a true exception here. Wherever we stop, be it for a cup of tea during a break or upon arriving at a historical site where her male colleagues gather in the parking area — everywhere, she is being noticed. Men walk up to her in the car with questioning faces. As she tells me, they all have one question first of all: “Are you a taxi driver?” She then explains in a few short sentences, and I see the men‟s faces soften, smile and respectfully and kindly chat with her. This scene repeats itself over and over again. I get the sense that she invites goodwill from the people she meets.Part II. But none of them would sleep that night either. They had a big day ahead of them. Hours earlier, White had been in his office, preparing warrants. Meanwhile, the New Haven Airport had quietly filled with federal agents, flying in from New York and Washington, DC. They had then gathered at the western corner of the city. The team‟s field headquarters that night would be an empty building on the very edge of town. The 300-man team of federal agents, state police, and local police had gathered to discuss the next step in the war on drugs.White listened as his friend Kevin Kline, an FBI special agent and one of the original members of the task force, was speaking to the law enforcement army. Kline laid out the battle plan for the morning‟s drug bust: the agents were to organize themselves into squads, forming arrest teams and back-up crews. The teams assigned to carry out raids received arrest packets containing the names, addresses, and photographs of all the suspects, as well as search warrants issued by the federal court. At 5:30 a.m., the teams were to split up, each reporting to their designated sites to prepare for the final stage of the operation: making the arrests. As he listened, White asked himself the same question that everyone else in the room must have been thinking. Could the team pull off a successful bust? Born and raised in New Haven, White still remembered a time when New Haven was considered a peaceful town. In 1960, only six murders, four rapes, and 16 robberies were reported. But soon, the drug gangs set up shop, and the turf wars began. With the gangs came gang violence: drive-by shootings, innocent victims killed, murders in broad daylight. In 1990, there were 31 murders, 168rapes, and 1 784 robberies. “Back then it was hell,” White recalls. “I thought, …What are we doing?‟”Part II. His wife has died long ago, and he had married again. However, Ella’s stepmother is unkind to her. When evening came, Ella would sit down by the fire in the ashes and cinders to rest and keep warm, that’s the reason why she got the name “Cinderella”.Then one day, an invitation to join in the Grand Ball hold by the prince came, which is for all the girls in that city. Both of her two step sisters are so excited that they can’t wait to demand Ella to prepare elegant gowns for them, while Ella is not allowed to step out of her room. When that evening came, tears began to rolled down from her face, then a Fairy Godmother came to her and helped her get dressed quickly to attend the ball.On that evening, the prince fell in love with Ella, and the next morning Ella was found and proposed a marriage by the prince, they live happily ever after without Ella’s step sisters’ disturb.Do you admire Tortoise for his cleverness or do you sympathize with all the birds? Why?Different people have different opinions. As regard to the story between the tortoise and the birds in our text book, someone sympathize all the birds, while I prefer to admire the tortoise’s wit. There was a famine in those days and tortoise haven’t eaten a good meal for 2 months. His body rattled like a dry stick in his empty shell. To enjoy a feast, he found ways to remove the birds’stereotype that he is mischievous and cunning, and even fly to the sky with the birds’wings. When in the sky, his eloquent speech made all the birds glad that they’d brought him. Besides, he was regarded as the king by the gods.UNIT 3What do you think is the most serious social problem in China? And what are the main causes? Our group think the most serious social problem in China nowadays is pollution, including air pollution, light pollution and white pollution. Different kinds of pollution have their own causes. Let’s begin with the first kind, what do you think of the cause of air pollution is?……In a word, with the rapid development of economy, more and more pollution problems are arising, to make our society a better one, we all human beings should work together to eliminate such causes as many as possible. How can we solve the latchkey children problem? The cost of living has been steadily rising for the past few decades. Food prices, clothing costs and tuition fees are constantly getting higher and higher. Partly because of financial need and partly because of career choices for personal fulfillment, mothers have been leaving the traditional role of full-time homemaker. So more and more latchkey children appear. To solve this social problem, parents should spare more time to stay with their kids and make them feel they are loved in spite of the fact that they are alone almost the whole day. They’d better get along well with their neighbors, then in case of emergency, kids can turn to neighbors for help. Besides, in the family, children should be guided to make full use of their private time, and stimulate a sense of independence and responsibility.UNIT 4Describe a career you’re likely to pursue in the future and tell us how you are preparing for it.I’d like to be an interpreter in the future, not only for the reason that interpreters have a high salary, but also that they travels a lot.To become an interpreter, the first step should be like this—having a good command of English. Then, try my best to obtain admission to Beijing Foreign Students University, which is famous for its language teaching. Last but not the least, being in BFSU doesn’t mean that I will become anexcellent interpreter, large quantities of language training should be received, professional skills should be polished, the task of being a well-rounded individual should be fulfilled. Only in this way can I become qualified. Is it a must for college students to have summer jobs? Why?I am consistent with this point of view. Summer job is a must for college students because we can gain social experience, which is critical for our latter careers. We can choose a company where we would stay for a fairly long time after we graduate. We can take the summer part time job to feel the company’s culture through dribs and drabs of our internship life.Undergraduates need this kind of real world experience and knowledge that could only come from an apprenticeship or, sometimes, a strong internship program.UNIT 5Share your experience in learning English: your success, failure and possible reasons.I’ve heard you’ve got first prize in the English speech contest, how did you get that? What’s your way of learning English? Do you usually practice speaking English with your friends?……I’ve learned that good English learners tend to accumulate new words and write them down on a small piece of paper, so that they can carry it everywhere and review new words and expressions whenever they have spare time. So I imitate them. Do you think it’s a good method to improve English?……And I also have some suggestions for you. Good English learners tend to read many English literary books, such as JANE EYRE and GONE WITH THE WIND. If you want to read these books, I can lend them to you.Should learners aim to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation? Why or why not?I don’t hold the viewpoint that English learners should aim to have a native accent, sometimes it’s OK if you understand what one says and can use English to express yourself to an English-speaker. That’s to say, different people have different needsto imitate the pronunciation. ……On the one hand, if we spend too much time on the pronunciation, it would be difficult for new learners to command the new language quickly. On the other, we have no way to imitate native speakers since we can’t meet with them daily. The attempt to imitate may transform into a strange accent which is like neither Chinese nor English.。

People always feel dangerous in this high crime rate society, so almost everyone’s apartment has a burglar-proofdoor.Lock our doors even when we are going out just for a few minutes, because we need to keep alert all the time.Burglar alarm system is also a good way to prevent burglaries. I also should work hard, have a regular exercise and build a strong body. In the future, if I work in another place and cannot live with them, I plan to back home regularly and spend more time to keep them company. To my teachers, what I have done is that sending greeting cards at Spring Festival and sending them greeting messages at Teachers’ day. I plan to write letters to them in my free time.To my friends, what I have done is that keeping in touch with them and sending them a greeting message or a gift at theirbirthday. I think our friendship will last not because the money or the benefits but the time we spend together and the precious memory in our mind.2.Are holidays a good time to express gratitude? Which holidays are the mostappropriate?Yes, holidays are a very good time to express gratitude. If I want to express gratitude to my parents, Mother’s day and Father’s day are the most appropriate. If I want to thank my teachers, I think Teacher’s day is the most appropriate. If I want to show my gratitude to my lover in t he future, the Valentines’ day is the most appropriate. But if I miss all of these holidays to express gratitude to them,I think the Spring Festival is also a good time to show my thanks.3.Do you think it is necessary for the Chinese to celebrate Western festivals? No, I don’t think so for it is not necessary. But I don’t mean that we cannot celebrate these Western festivals. I don’t think it’s necessary to find a definite answer to whether we Chinese should celebrate the foreign festivals or not. We ought to respect others’ decision instead of interference in their choices. It’s not a bad thing for the people to take advantage of the western festivals, entertaining themselves, getting together and exchanging greetings. But as we all know that we have a lot of traditional festivals are now forgotten by some people of our generation. They have lost their interest in our traditional festivals such as Tomb-sweeping day, Dragon-boat festival, Double Ninth Festival, etc. In general, the Chinese young men almost don’t know the profound implications of our traditional Chinese festivals. Insteadthey are familiar with the western festivals and go after them like a flock of ducks. Obviously, this is a situation that we do not want to see.I think i t is right to lay emphasis on our traditional festivals but it’s not proper to reject the foreignones on this account. In fact, western festivals like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which have taken root in our country and becoming popular festivals among our people. They are a good time to express our gratitude to our relatives. All in all, it’s natural for the Chinese people, especially our young people, to take part in the western festival activities, relaxing and relieving themselves. I think if you are interested in the celebration of the western festivals, just join it and enjoy yourself. If you are not interested in it, you can ignore them but don’t complain and make criticism.4.It is sometimes claimed that many festivals have been created just toencourage people to spend money. Do you agree? No, I don’t agree with that.It is common knowledge that every nation has its own special festivals with colorful backgrounds, which are closely connected with its special history or excellent culture. So festivals are the products of the sedimentary accretion of a nation’s culture over thousands of years. Some people think so, as you just said, is probably because people often spend much money during a festival.Well, I think people spend more money during a festival than at normal times is reasonable because it needs money to buy different things to celebrate a festival. To the businessmen, festivals are a good time to increase income. To the consumers, they also are willing to pay at thisspecial time. The view that festivals only have been created to encourage people to spend money is too simple and too narrow. I think people spend more money during a festival is a win-win situation to the whole society.Unit 5Topics for Discussion1.Is it enough to help only those people we know?Well, I think that depends. The pre-requisite of helping others is that you are a man who can offer help. The most important thing to measure it’s enough or not is that your personal ability. If you are a man who needs help, there is no need for us to talk about this issue. If you are a merchant who has a high income, I think it’s not enough to help only those people you know. If you are a student who has no income and needs parents’ money to live, I think it’s enough to help those people you know. Using one sentence to conclude my idea is that ‘w ith great power, comes great responsibility’.2.What is the relationship between one’s attitude to life and one’s fate? Does theformer determine the latter or is it the other way round?Well, I think our life is truly in the hands of fate from the day we are born because we cannot choose our parents and it has no relationship with our attitude to life. But when we are born to the world, we get the chance to choose the attitude to life which will partly determines our latter life.As time goes by, the attitude you choose will show an impact on your life and your fate will be changed to some degree. But your attitude to life is only one cause to your fate, not the directcause.Yes, to a large extend, I think the former determines the latter. Because what you did in the former has a direct impact on your latter just like if I keep doing exercise for one hour, of course,I will have a strong body one or two years later. But if I am a good student in the university, doesthat mean I will have a high paid job in the future? I think it also related to your personal fate. 3.Do you think success is due more to luck and opportunity or to diligence? Why?In my opinion, luck, opportunity and diligence are all important to success, but success is due more to one’s diligence.Generally speaking, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and diligent can make use of them to achieve their purpose.Opportunities only come to the well-prepared person who bears perseverance and perspiration and it can be created by diligent people. Diligence is the fundamental pre-condition, which can change opportunity into success. Diligence is the first key factor to success, that is, to be diligent means to work with full energy and think with full effort. To be diligent means to practice with complete dedication and constant searching for a better method. Diligence helps us remove ignorance, overcome difficulties, and enlighten our minds. There is no doubt that if you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you.。

The biggest reward will come from knowing how much their efforts will mean to those with special needs.B: But as what you said, if a let of companies start making such products all at once, the intense competition will soon drive a company to bankruptcy. The best way, I think, is for the central government to take action and assign certain enterprises.Topic 9 (Unit 9):Debating: Arguments for or against the view that the global economy is harming our national cultureA:I think the global economy is doing us more harm than good..Although we now have a much greater choice of goods, the sad fact is that many people, especially the young, have come to worship everything foreign. They drink Coca-Cola, eat Italian pizzas, wear Nike sneakers, watch Hollywood movies.The\danger is they’ll gradually adopt western values and western ways of life and forget their own culture.B:I don’t think I can agree with the view of you.Consumption of imported goods and adoption of some foreign practices does not mean we are losing our national identity. However,it is a good thing that globalization makes it possible for us to be exposed to different cultures in our home country.A:But, every cultural has its disadvantages. It has already become a reality. Things like dating at an early age, going to al-night parties, marrying in white, and having cereal for breakfast instead of porridge are not uncommon among the young, but they are not part of our national traditions.B:OH,no,we do not passively accept everything foreign and discard our own traditions.Instead wo incorporate something from other cultures into our own traditions so thar we become more than we are!Topic 10 (Unit 10):Debating: Arguments for or against encouraging teachers to bring humor into classroom teachingA:I'm for the view that we should encourage teachers to bring humor into classroom teaching.B:I hold the view that we should not encourage teachers to bring humor into classroom teaching.A:Humor and laughter can make us feel relaxed and become more creative in the classes. B:So it's likely to distract our attention from the subject of study and many affect the learning process.A:But I think teachers with a good sense of humor can keep their students interested even if subject is difficult and dry.B:The consequence would be that students only recall the joke but forget all about what the joke was meant to illustrate.A:The humorous stories can be more compact about the subject knowledge for students ro remember.B:Students can spend more time to remember the knowledge but time of the classes is limited for teaching. Using humor can be a good way to make the students understand.Topic 11 (Unit 11)Debating: Arguments for or against the view that watching a film at home is better than watching it at a cinemaTopic 12 (Unit 12):Debating: Arguments for or against requiring students to wear school uniformsA:I don't agree with the school's decision that young students must go to school with their uniforms on.B:On the contrary, I quite agree with it.A:Wearing school uniforms made me feel dull and ordinary.B:I enjoyed wearing the same uniforms with other students. So we won't have too many difference in our clothes.A:Everyone is the same. It can not reflect a person's individual personality.B:But it can prevent students from competing with others in what they put on.A:It can create our image by choosing clothes but this doesn't mean the clothes should be expensive.B:So I think students would waste too much time on their wearing instead of studying.A:Only spend little time, we can feel competent and study more effectively.B:When all the young students must wear uniforms, they will be more likely to compete with other students of studies bu not clothes.Topic 13 (Unit 13):Debating: Arguments for or against space explorationA:I don’t think it is necessary to spend so much time and money on space exploration. Share with your partner your experience when you had a poor memory and give suggestions to improve memory.-Hello, Marry, you look upset, what happened?-I got a D in the examination. I have a poor memory, which makes me confused-Oh, don’t worry. Everyone forgets one thing or another from time to time.-I often forget something. I think my memory is going failing.I do have a poor memory for faces, names, numbers and dates. Susan, you got excellent marks in every subject. Can you give me some suggestions?-I’d like to help you. In the past, I was forgetful. Then I read an article on studying and memory. It told me something useful.-What useful suggestions?-First, be optimistic with your memory. Stress can make remember things much more difficult.-Yes, being confident is important.-Second, exercise your Brain as much as possible. Challenging your brain by thinking and solving the problems. There are some exams at school. We can always find students cheating in those examinations.-OK. I think the phenomenon of students’ cheating in exams can’t forbid completely. Being prepared is always the best policy. We need to dress professionally, and then be sure to maintain good eye contact and answer all questions politely and directly. Don’t look too shy, nor should we sound too aggressive. I just know these, what about you?-Well, besides what you said, often they ask us to tell them about ourselves. We can split our answer into two, the professional and the personal level. Both are important, and how we move from one to the other depends on what we have to say. We can give a brief summary of our life, professional and personal, with less emphasis on the early past, and more emphasis on the present and the future. Next, they may want to know our characters, for example, ability for teamwork is usually valued, work carefully and indep endently is likely what they want to know. But I’m not sure if we should ask for salary and fringe benefit.-Better not, I think. Not unless they bring it up.-Sounds reasonable.5. Yuan, what do you want to do after graduation? I want to further my study.-F urther your study? You have study for too long, haven’t you? I want to find a job.-I don’t think so. How difficult it is to find a proper job! If we directly look for jobs, many companies probably can’t employ us because of our bachelor degree.-But even if we further our study, we still face difficult situation of finding a good job. And furthering study needs much more money, it will be a heavy burden to our families. I think we should make money to ease our family burden.-You are right on the one hand, but on the other hand we should focus on future. Furthering study can help us find a better job, although we probably can’t make money during furthering study, we will earn more in the future. So I think it’s worthwhile to spend money on furthering money now.-Well, you look like sure to further your study.-Yes. And you seem firm to find a job.-Ha-ha, no matter what we choose, we must try our best to make it.-I second you. So come on now!。

Well on one hand science is backed up on the other hand people have died for there god or gods. If people are so willing to DIE for what they believe in there must be something behind it. The Catholic Church have executed the illuminate a science group and what did they do the science fools went underground instead of fighting like men or Believers.A:well,I think The only way to really know whether some claim is true is to read up on it from reliable sources. If you're not willing to do that (and most people aren't, then you should just trust the consensus of experts, because they're the most likely to be right.B:but sometimes science does not work well.A: Science is mostly a set of rules determining what we can prove and so know.I could argue that the sky is purple, but it's not trueI could also argue that it's blue, and that would be true. But if we had lived in a tomb for a long time and had lost knowledge of it's color over many generations there would be no way to tell, and science would shun both ideas as indeterminable. In your daily marriage life, you'll gradually find that nearly everything is connected with money. I have witnessed several married couples used to give up everything in the world for their love breaking down for financial problem. So I don't mean that you should put economic status in the first place, at least you should take it into your serious consideration if you want to decide on a relationship.A: I definitely didn't give economic status priority in choosing my husband. I married him because I love him and he is a wonderful man and takes good care of me. We certainly aren't rich, but I couldn't be happier, because he is the man I want to be with no matter what his income is. We just are very careful with our finances and make good decisions with our money, and it's never given us any problems so far. I would choose him over money any day!!B: it is not good to get married and build a family over a shaky foundation. this is the reason why parents want that their children will consider getting married and having children of their own after having achieved some degree of financial stability. it is true that love must be the foremost consideration in marriage but, we cannot discount the fact that, in today's world no marriage will make it through without the couple's financial stability to back up the family that they are building. A:maybe, but I will hoid on my own opinion.Topic 4 (Unit 4:Debating: Arguments for or against the view that feeling stressed before job interviews is badA: Hello, Tom. Do you know Jerry failed the job interview?B: Why? I can’ t believe that. He is always good at everything in my mind. I think nothing can defeat him.A: I think so. But the fact is that he failed the job interview.B: So, why did he fail the interview?A: It’ s said that he felt stressed before the interview, so he didn’ t perform well .he was so sad later. B: what a pity! The stress may make people nervous and can’ t show their ability. Because it can make your mind blank and lower your IQ.A:yes,Thought we know that the stress bef ore the interview is bad ,we always can ’ t control ourselves to relax .what’ s your idea about this?B:I think we should have a good sleep on the night before the interview. we should be confident and keep a normal heart .we should just do our best .A:however, the stress is not always bad . no motivation without pressure ,so appropriate tension will help people .B:if we always feel relaxed and don’ t prepare anything .we can’ t be easy to pass the interview. B:if we have interview next time ,we shouldn’ t be too nervous and should calm down during the interview.Topic 5 (Unit 5:Debating: Arguments for or against volunteering for an international conference to be held in your city/regionTopic 6 (Unit 6:Debating: Arguments for or against developing more parks in downtown areasTopic 16(Unit 16:Debating: Arguments for or against divorce as the solution to a loveless marriage话题三合一A: hey,do you still remember our high school classmate,Ivy?B: Ivy?That girl who got a good result in the university entrance exam?A: Yeah, she got 610!What a surprise! B: Culture Exhibition Conference?A:yes.B: Well…I didn’ t attend this conference because I think it doesn’ t metter to me .A: I don’ t think so. We students should broaden our horizon through thes e kinds of conference. Always raeding books and nerver look at the world, it is very sad thing.B: but don’ t you think that we even don’ t good at that Professional knowledge? That is a waste of time .A: no..don’ t you think that although we are not good at some professional knowledge,we still can learn from these conferences?what I mean is, study is always a good thing.B: maybe you are right .A: well, More and more rapid development of shenzhen city, more foreigners will come here through some international conference .B: yes,I think our government should take some actions.for example,we can develope more parks in downtown areas.A: that is a good idea.
