America's adults are increasingly living unhealthy and sometimes 21 lifestyles. Instead of working to live, they are living to work. They report spending more time working and less time sleeping and being 22 in social and leisure activities more than they did just five years ago. Most say they suffer from sleep problems and when they go to sleep, many sleep alone even if they are 23 .These are some of the findings of the 2001 poll named Sleep in America, which looks at the relationship between Americans' lifestyles, sleep habits and sleep problems. Sleep 24 continues to be widespread in America.According to the poll, a majority of American adults (63%) does not get the 25 eight hours of sleep needed for good health. In fact, nearly one-third (31%) report sleeping less than seven hours each week night. The poll also shows that more than one-third of Americans say they get less sleep now than five years ago. Seven in ten (69%) say they experience frequent sleep problems and most say they would sleep more if they believed it would 26 their overall health and well-being.One 27 finding was that many people don't want to give up any more sleep in spite of their busy lives. On the downside, however, far too many adults still sacrifice sleep, which is unhealthy and counter productive to their lives. One reason for this is the increasingly fast-paced and 28 world in which they live is placing growing pressure on people to 29 in their jobs and relationships. Poll coordinators say the greatest difficulty lies in educating Americans that a good night's sleep every night, and not just on weekends or 30 , is essential.•21. ______________________•该题共0人答题,答对0人,答错0人,正确率为0%,错误率为0%•正确答案(1分): ASection BDirections: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.•Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Adversities are a part of living, and we choose the way we react to each adversity in our lives. I would be the last to deny that adversities can be exceedingly difficult. Many times they will be senseless, unfair, painful, and beyond our control to prevent. However, they come into our lives for a reason. We can choose to learn valuable lessons from each adversity we encounter. Marvin J. Ashton said, "Adversity will surface in every life. How we meet it makes the difference."Tough times, events, and circumstances can teach us much about ourselves and other people. They bring us face to face with our honesty, integrity, sense of personal responsibility, and ways of dealing with life's blows. Initially, we want to bury our hurt and grief deeply inside rather than experiencing painful emotions. However, before the pain and grief will subside, we must pick up the pieces. We must fully move through these feelings of discouragement, grief, and pain, allowing ourselves complete emotional expression before the pain will ease its hold.In the process of allowing ourselves to feel our emotions completely, we learn valuable life lessons. We also discover how resilient and strong we are at any given point in our life. If we look closely at each adversity, we become wiser to life's ways, our ways, and people's ways. Each adversity we encounter can bringnew insight into human nature. As tough as life's lessons sometimes are, each holds the seed of an equal or greater blessing, a pathway to new growth as a human being. It is our responsibility to learn each lesson. Otherwise, we will be handeda more difficult scenario of the same lesson again. The lessons we are meant to learn will reappear untilwe learn them completely. The more difficult the adversity is, the more valuable will be the lessons it offers to teach. By exercising faith in a power greater than ourselves, we discover we are not alone in any adversity. We learn to see blessings appear — sometimes years later — that we would not have received had we not been handed tough times.31. What does Marvin J. How did I get here? This is not what I envisioned!"Well, you certainly aren't alone in that thought. In fact, my clients so often share this thought with me that I have given it its own name. I call this "Being Caught in the Expectation Gap." The "expectation gap"is the gap between living the life you think you are creating and living the life you are actually creating.Dissatisfaction, frustration and disillusionment are experienced most prevalently when you expect one thing to happen and something else entirely shows up.The truth is that you are always creating. You are the sole creator and attractor of all experiences in your life. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't believe you fall into the "expectation gap" when you are creating using all your tools and resources. Quite the contrary. You fall into the "expectation gap" when you are only aware of what your conscious mind is desiring and you are ignoring the other 88% of your mind — your subconscious mind, where all the other amazing parts of you live with a multitude of desires.Every person, you included, has multiple parts that make up the whole of who you are. These parts of you live in your subconscious mind. They are the various aspects of your personality that make you the rich and complex human being that you are. Each part of you has one primary function — an intention as it were —something it wishes to provide you or ensure for you. And every intention, at its core, is always good and chosen with your best interest at heart. Now, the way these various parts ensure their intentions are being met is through the use of behaviors. The behaviors that you display are actually driven by these various parts of you happily fulfilling their intentions for you.Simply becoming aware of the whole you and uncovering those conflicting intentions will have a huge impact on the manifestation of your desires. When you have a clean slate to create from, the tools for creating come much easier and provide amazing success. I encourage you to begin the journey. The rewards are nothing short of living your dream life!36. Their words in that moment altered something deep inside of you and changed who you are. The person who influenced you could have been the parent of a friend, someone you saw on a regular basis at the grocery store, a neighbor or a beloved teacher. It could be something as simple as a conversation or how they conducted themselves in the world. We all can have such an influence on others. Whether you believe it or not, your actions, attitude and how you conduct your life does get noticed and has an influence on others. Think of how you conduct yourself in your profession, at school or even while just out shopping. How we conduct our life teaches people and influences them. That's a pretty heavy thought. If you wake up each morning knowing that today you will teach someone, that can absolutely have an impact on your attitude and how you feel about yourself and the world. As we go through the day, we can try to be open to lessons to be learned from difficult people and situations.Every time someone's remarks challenge us, it's an opportunity to look inside and see what sensitive nerve was hit. Being human and preferring to be liked, it's natural to want teachers who are considerate of our feelings. Consider this, however. When things are always lovely and sweet, what do you learn from them? Blunt or even unkind remarks could be what we need to spur a change. The important thing is to keep an open mind.Even things said that are obviously out of jealousy could contain a grain of truth. That grain of truth could be something to think upon in spite of someone else's perception. Study the words to see if there might be something to it. If not, then let it go.So, what lessons do you think you have learned from someone else? I don't know about others, but I have learned life lessons from books and powerful television shows. The most powerful lessons I've learned have been from people I know. I have a friend who could be considered severely handicapped. To me, she is the most positive person I've ever met in my life. Her attitude in the face of horrendous adversity is something I have tried to emulate.36. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.•Passage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. One of the most successful commercial products ever launched is said to have come about as the result ofa mistake. In 1896, Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, was selling a nerve tonic known as "French WineCola — Ideal Nerve Tonic". By accidentally adding fizzy water instead of still water to the recipe, a pharmacist called John S. Pemberton invented what has today become the most popular soft drink in the world: Coca-Cola. Along with its closest rival — Pepsi — which appeared on the market three years later, Coke has enjoyed phenomenal success worldwide, particularly in the past fifty years. Indeed, old Coke bottles and "limited edition" cans can often fetch considerable sums from collectors, and there are even stores which deal exclusively in Coke products and memorabilia. What could possibly account for the amazing success of Coca-Cola? How has this combination of carbonated water, sugar, acid and flavourings come to symbolize the American way of life for most of the world? After all, even the manufacturers could hardly describe Coke as a healthy product since it contains relatively high amounts of sugar (admittedly not the case with Diet Coke which contains artificial sweeteners instead of sugar) and phosphoric acid, both of which are known to damage teeth. One explanation may be found in the name. The original recipe included a flavouring from the coca plant and probably included small amounts of cocaine (an addictive substance), but since the early part of this century all traces of cocaine have been removed. However, Coke (like all cola drinks) also includes a flavouring from the cola tree; cola extract contains caffeine, which is a stimulant, and the Coca-Cola company adds extra caffeine for good measure. While caffeine is not thought to be an addictive substance in itself, there is considerable evidence that over a period of time the consumption of caffeine has to be increased in order for its stimulating effect to be maintained, and so sales of Coke perhaps benefit as a result.A more likely reason for the enduring popularity of Coke may, however, be found in the company's enviablemarketing strategies. Over the years it has come up with some of the most memorable commercials, tunes, slogans and sponsorship in the world of advertising, variously emphasizing international harmony, youthfulness anda carefree lifestyle. Few other companies (arguably including Pepsi) have been able to match such marketingpolicies so consistently or effectively. As suggested earlier, the influences of American culture are evident just about everywhere, and Coca-Cola has somehow come to represent a vision of the United States that much of the rest of the world dreams about and aspires to. Perhaps drinking Coke brings people that little bit closer to the dream.36. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.•Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. Companies toured the academic institutions, competing with each other to recruit graduates. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs. Most career organizations highlight three stages for graduates to follow in the process of securing a suitable career: recognizing abilities, matching these to available vacancies and presenting themselves well to prospective employers.Job seekers have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. An honest assessment of personal interests and abilities such as creative or scientific skills, or skills acquired from work experience, should also be given careful thought. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study job vacancies and information in newspapers or they can visit a career office, write to possible employers for information or contact friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.Good personal presentation is essential in the search for a good career. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employer's needs, explain why they are interested in a career with the particular company and try to show that they already know something about the company and its activities. When graduates are asked to attend an interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a questionand giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.31. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for a special dinner among/ə'mʌŋ/ family and friends. People make short-speeches/spiːtʃ/ and give thanks for their food.2 We have celebrated the festival since the first pioneers /ˌpaɪəˈnɪəs /from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow/ɡrəu/ corn/kɔ:n/. The following/'fɔləuiŋ/ year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food.3 We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is always the most crowded room in our house because we all help prepare the food. We lay/lei/ the table and then before we begin dinner, my father gives thanks for the food. So we remember why we celebrate the festival. We usually eat too much, but it is only once a year! We often talk a lot and tell stories after dinner as well. When it is all over, everyone helps wash the dishes/'diʃiz/.4 The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. During the Thanksgiving Day festival, there are plenty /'plenti/ of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as it goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macy’s store. Thanksgiving is the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many teams playing games. 八年级下册英语Unit 2 Student Volunteer Work in America

Student Volunteer Work in America语篇导读参加志愿者活动,对许多中国学生来说,可能还是一件新鲜事。

但在美国,它却是学生日常生活中必不可少的一部分。

美国学生是如何看待志愿者活动的呢?“Volunteering means working for free to help someone else.”U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama is a big fan of volunteering. Volunteering means working for free to help someone else. Mrs Obama says volunteering is very important. “It should be part of everyone’s life,” she says. Many teens agree. They say that helping others feels great and makes a difference. These days, more and more teens volunteer than work for pay. Teens clean up parks, walk dogs at animal shelters, visit the elderly, and more. Some cities — including Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. — require high school students to volunteer. Students must volunteer in order to graduate. The student volunteers learn new skills and help their communities at the same time. Many parents are in favor of the idea — they say volunteering helps teens build job skills. But most teens don’t want to be forced to volunteer. Th ey say they are busy. And they say volunteering is only fun if it’s a choice. What’s your opinion on volunteer work? Read both sides of the debate (辩论) and decide.YES●Volunteering experience can help teens get into college or get a job.●Ma ny cities and towns need help. Volunteers can help keep important programs going.●Not all teens will volunteer if it isn’t required. Schools should require students to do all they can to get ready for adult life.NO●Most teens are already v ery busy with classes, homework, jobs and sports. Forcing them to do more isn’t fair.●It should be up to each person. Helping out doesn’t feel good if you have to do it.●Finding a volunteer job isn’t always easy. Students shouldn’t be kept from graduatin g because of something they can’t control (控制).。

Work in America It is not surprising that modern children tend to look blank and dispirited when informed that they will someday have to “go to work and make a living”. The problem is that they cannot imagine what work is in America. Not so long ago, when a parent said he was off to work, the child knew very well what was about to happen. His parent was going to make something or fix something. The parent could take his child to his place of business and let him watch while he repaired a car or built a table.
Reading
Do you have any picture of what particular work you are going to do in the future? In America, children may feel discouraged or even nervous when they are told that they have to work and support themselves when they grow up and make a living on their own. What’s wrong?
