Stay strong and get
out there and start showing the world what you can offer. I pro mise if you work hard and never give up, you will soon find th e job that you are looking for. And while you are doing it, thing about getting your degree as well because it will help you to become more challenging. Try those tips.

Why does most of the world travel on the right side today? Th eories differ, but there’s no doubt Napoleon was a major influ ence. The French have used the right since at least the late 1 8th century. Some say that before the French Revolution, nob lemen drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasants to the right. Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia, Sw itzerland and Germany. Hitler, in turn, ordered right-
hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. Natio ns that escaped right-
hand control, like Great Britain, followed their left-
hand tradition.
The U.S. has not always been a nation of right-
hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic tra velled on the left, as it did in England. But by the late 1700s, p eople driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses b egan promoting a shift(改变)
to the right. A driver would sit on the rear(后面的)
left horse in order to wave his whip(鞭子)
with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, they travelle d on the right.
One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions i n the U.S. occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford deci ded to mass-
produce his cars with controls on the left (one reason, stated i n 1908: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto t he edge, especially… if there is a lady to be considered). Onc e these rules were set, many countries eventually adjusted to the right-
hand standard, including Canada in the 1920s, Sweden in 19 67 and Burma in 1970. The U.K. and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world’s few remai ning holdouts (坚持不变
者). Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as we ll--- though many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.
Why did people in Switzerland travel on the right?
They had used the right-hand traffic since the 18th century. Napoleon introduced the right-hand traffic to this country. Rich people enjoyed driving their carriages on the right.
Hitler ordered them to go against their left-hand tradition.
Of all the countries below, the one that travels on the right is_ ________.
Japan
England
Austria
Australia
Henry Ford produced cars with controls on the left __________ .
so that passengers could get off conveniently
in order to change traffic directions in the U.S.
because rules at that time weren’t perfect
though many countries were strongly against that
According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? Before the French Revolution, all the French people used the right.
The Burmese began to travel on the right in 1970.
People in Britain and the U.S. travel on the same side nowad ays.
All the Asian nations use the left at present.
What would be the best title for this passage?
Who made the great contribution to the shift of traffic direction
s?
How cars have become a popular means of transportation? How Henry Ford produced his cars with controls on the left? Why don’t people all drive on the same side of road?
C

4 Key Strategies for Running to Lose Weight
As one of the most active exercises out there, running is an e xtremely efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. A 150-pound person will burn approximately 100 calories per mile w hen running. 36

If you want to lose weight by running, keep in mind that you’ll only lose pounds if you burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life fu nctions, about 3500 calories. 37 Runners do have spe cial nutrition needs, but the basic principles for healthy eating still apply. Try choosing smaller portions of high-fat and high-calorie foods and eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegeta
bles.
2. Follow a training schedule
Sticking to a training schedule is a simple way to stay motivat ed to run. 38 So it’s much harder to postpone or skip w orkouts. Following a schedule can also help you avoid a runni ng injury by not increasing your mileage too quickly.
3. Run regularly
If you don’t want to follow a schedule, you still need to have s ome consistency with your running because you won’t lose w eight by running once a week. It’s best to get some activity ev ery day. 39 If you find that your motivation to run is suf fering, follow some necessary tips to get inspired.
4. 40
Incorporating speed work or interval training (running at a ver y fast speed for short intervals of time) into your running routin e can also help your weight loss efforts. Speed work burns a great amount of calories in a short period of time. You’ll also i ncrease your muscle mass, causing you to burn more calories throughout the day.
A. Keep it challenging
B. Eat for Performance
C. You’ll know exactly what you need to do every day and eac
h run builds on the next.
D. So you’ll need to combine running with a healthy diet.
E. If you’re hoping to use running to lose weight, here’s some advice on how to be successful.
F. Here are ways to improve your running motivation.
G. But if that’s not possible, try to shoot for at least 3-
4 times per week.

Dear Coach,
I have been out of work for almost six months now and things are starting to get very toug h for me. I am practically living out of my savings. I have been looking for a job, but things ar e really bad and 1 cannot find a single person who wants to hire me. I know that the main pro blem is that I do not have a degree. I want to go back to school and get my degree, but I also need a job now. I owe money to some people who have been helping me. Because I am out of work,
I cannot pay them back. What do you think 1 should do? I need to find a job as quickly as po ssible, and want to know what else to do to get people to give me a chance to work for them. The Unemployed
Dear Unemployed,
Before you get yourself in a really bad situation, you need to stop borrowing money from people. If you continue doing that, you will be deep in debts and the situation will get even worse for you. The next thing you need to do is look for a job depending on your ab ilities, skills, and experience. By doing that, you will be increasing your chances of finding a j ob that suits
you best. And the last thing I will suggest is that you should stop feeling sorry for yourself and continue working hard to get a job that you need. Borrowing money, complaining, and feelin g bad for your situation will do no good to you. Stay strong and get
out there and start showing the world what you can offer. I promise if you work hard and nev er give up, you will soon find the job that you are looking for. And while you are doing it, thing about getting your degree as well because it will help you to become more challenging. Try t hose tips.

Why does most of the world travel on the right side today? Theories differ, but there’s no dou bt Napoleon was a major influence. The French have used the right since at least the late 18t h century. Some say that before the French Revolution, noblemen drove their carriages on th e left, forcing the peasants to the right. Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia, Switzerland and Germany. Hitler, i n turn, ordered right-
hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. Nations that escaped right-
hand control, like Great Britain, followed their left-hand tradition.
The U.S. has not always been a nation of right-
hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic travelled on the left, as it did in E ngland. But by the late 1700s, people driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses began promoting a shift(改变)to the right. A driver would sit on the rear(后面的)
left horse in order to wave his whip(鞭子)
with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, they travelled on the right.
One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions in the U.S. occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to mass-
produce his cars with controls on the left (one reason, stated in 1908: the convenience for pa ssengers exiting directly onto the edge, especially… if there is a lady to be considered). Onc e these rules were set, many countries eventually adjusted to the right-
hand standard, including Canada in the 1920s, Sweden in 1967 and Burma in 1970. The U.K . and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world’s few remaini ng holdouts (坚持不变者). Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as well--
- though many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.
Why did people in Switzerland travel on the right?。
