Working with a Diverse Group: My Multicultural Team Experience

My name is Jamie and I'm a 5th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. This year, my class did a really cool project where we had to work in teams to put together a presentation on different countries around the world. My teacher picked the teams and made sure each one had kids from different backgrounds and cultures. At first, I wasn't too excited about being put into a diverse group - I kind of just wanted to work with my friends. But this project ended up being a really interesting experience that taught me a lot about working with people from different cultures. It definitely had its challenges, but it was awesome in the end!

Our team had five kids total - me, Jayden, Xiuying, Ahmed, and Luciana. I'm just a regular kid from here in town. Jayden's family is from India, Xiuying recently moved here from China, Ahmed's parents came from Egypt, and Luciana is from Brazil but

has lived here for a few years. So as you can see, we were like a mini United Nations squad!

The very first challenge was simply understanding each other. Xiuying and Ahmed were still pretty new to English, so communication could be really tough sometimes. There were a bunch of times where we'd be trying to discuss ideas, and they would get lost or confused. That was frustrating for all of us. We had to learn to speak slower, use simpler words, and find other ways to explain things through body language or pictures. Even obvious figures of speech like "it costs an arm and a leg" didn't make sense to them at first.

Then there were cultural differences in how we approached the work itself. Luciana and I were both used to a pretty casual, free-flowing style where we could just joke around and go off on random tangents during our meetings. But Xiuying was always extremely focused and serious - she got visibly annoyed anytime we got off track. Ahmed was somewhere in the middle - he didn't mind a little off-topic chit-chat, but wanted to make sure we had a solid agenda and stuck to it for the most part.

Jayden was kind of his own special case. He was probably the most fluent in English, but came from a culture where you were expected to respect adults and authority figures without really

questioning them directly. So anytime I or one of the other kids disagreed with the teacher's instructions or suggestions, Jayden would get super uncomfortable and awkward. We had to reassure him a bunch of times that it was okay to respectfully share a different perspective.

There were also some gender dynamics that created awkward moments. Ahmed seemed to have some ingrained assumptions that the girls on the team should be handling more of the arts/crafty type of tasks while the guys took the lead on the "important" writing and research parts. He would defer to me and Jayden on certain decisions in a way that felt kind of

old-fashioned and sexist, if I'm being totally honest. Luciana was NOT having it - she had to check him a few times and make sure he understood we were all equal partners.

Then there were just silly misunderstandings based on different cultural norms. Like when we were all working at Jayden's place one day, his mom brought over this platter of food for us as a snack. For her culture, it was the polite thing to do as the host. But Xiuying's family had really stressed finishing everything on your plate to be respectful, so she wouldn't stop eating even after she was clearly full because she didn't want to
