Peter Jones is a 92yearold,short,calm and proud man.Every morning he is fully dressed by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face perfectly shaved even though he is unable to see anything. He would move to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years old has recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home,he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walking stick skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room.“I love it,” he stated wit h enthusiasm.“Mr.Jones,you haven’t been to the room,” said the nurse.“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied.“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged...it’s how I arrange my mind.I have already decided to love it.It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up.I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed complaining of the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work,or get out of b ed and be thankful for the ones that do.”

To Friend or Not to Friend
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways,so would
you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your onl ine activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life.Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide.On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t tak e it personally if their child ignores their request,“When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request,it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.

C.parents have realized the importance of social networks

从第二段的句子However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.可知,父母已经意识到社交网络的重要性,故选C。
6.Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend reque st because ________.
A.they hide something from their parents
B.they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C.their parents tend to fall behind in technology
D.their parents make negative comments on them
B解析:细节理解题。
从第四段的句子On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.可知,年轻人可能会拒绝父母加好友的请求,因为他们不愿意被父母看见自己的一举一动,故选B。
7.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.privacy online B.social networks

D解析:主旨大意题。

The Truth Can Set You Free
I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia.I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit. “Can I see your license and registration?” the poli ce officer asked me.I pulled both out for him,and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.“Are you with the army?”
“No,I’m not.” I answered.I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to reregister yet.
“So what brings you here?”
He had asked a direct question.Without thinking very hard,I gave him a direct answer.“Well, officer,” I said,“since you’ve asked,I have cancer.I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”
“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out.Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me.“You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”
He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me,or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest. “Well, officer,I know that I look pretty healthy.I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤)are on the inside.” And then,I don’t know what possessed me,
but I just did it.I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.
He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes.He now knew he was talking to a dying man.Well,he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license.“Do me a favor.” he said,“Slow down from now on.”
The awful truth had set me free.As he went back to his police car,I had a realization.I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女)who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets.I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

Dear Dad,
Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father’s Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you.Yet as I selected and read,it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.
You’ll soon be 84 years old,Dad,and you and I will have had 55 Father’s Days together.I haven’t always been with you on Father’s Day but I’ve always been with you in my heart.
You know,Dad,there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap.You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other.
The FatherDaughter Duel shifted into high gear (档位)when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the 54 Chevy whether you liked it or not.The police officer who sent me home, after you reported the Chevy stolen, didn’t have much tolerance for a stubborn 16yearold,while you were so tolerant about it,Dad,and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life.
Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left.Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared.I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine.
But the strangest thing happened last week.I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car.It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car.It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere.Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.
I guess what I’m trying to say,Dad,is what every son and daughter wants to say
to their Dad today.Honoring a father on F ather’s Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say,and it’s wishing that never had to end.
I love you,Dad.
Love,
Jenny
