Scientists say that people are the only animals that can cry. We cry when we are sad, when we
are happy. We cry for thousands of different reasons. When someone dies, we cry. When a baby is
born, we cry too. But crying is mystery(难解的谜) what are tears? Where do they come? Why do we
get them? Modern science does not have all the answers to these questions.
There are two different kinds of tears—emotional (情感的) tears and reflex(本能反应的) tears.
Emotional tears come from feelings, happiness or sadness. Reflex tears are the kind that comes when
we get a piece of dirt in the eye. But nobody knows where tears come from. William Frey is studying
tears. Frey's study shows that women cry more often than men. However, his study does not tell us why women cry more. He also has a theory about why people cry, but it is only a theory, and he has not proved it yet. Crying can remove the poisons(毒素) produced by emotional stress(紧张)or physical stress in the body and helps people stay healthy.
Psychologists(心理学家)also believe that crying is good for you. They say it helps reduce stress. Stress can cause high blood pressure (高血压) , heart disease, and other illness. Crying can help prevent these illnesses and keep us well. For our health and happiness, it may be good for all of us, men and women, to have a good cry more often.

Afternoon tea, which is associated with(与……联系在一起)English people, is considered to be an integrated (融合的) part of their life. It is a light meal or a snack traditionally served around 4 p.m.
between lunch and dinner. Afternoon tea usually includes scones (烤饼),sandwiches,
biscuits, and many kinds of cakes.
Drinking tea in the afternoon first became popular around 1840. A Duchess (公爵夫
人) called Anna first introduced afternoon tea in England. It was said that the Duchess
often became hungry at around four o'clock, because at that time dinner was served at
eight o'clock. On one occasion, the Duchess asked servants to bring tea, bread and butter,
sandwiches and cakes to her room at 4 p.m. This became her habit and she soon began
inviting friends to join her.
Queen Victoria in the 19th century strongly supported the idea; and afternoon tea
soon grew popular across England. Indeed, Queen V ictoria was well-known for her craziness about tea. She threw her tea cup across the room if she found the tea not up to standard(达到标准)! Therefore, through the upper society (上层社会). afternoon tea became a fashionable social event where they would change into long gowns (礼服) gloves and hats for afternoon tea.
Traditionally afternoon tea consists of many delic ious pastries(糕点). Tea is brewed(泡)and poured from silver teapots into delicate(精致)porcelain cups(瓷杯). Today, however, an afternoon tea is likely to be just a piece of bread, biscuit and a mug of tea or just a cup of tea using a tea bag.

III. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false (判断下列句子是否符合你听到的短文内容,符合的用“T”表示,不符合的用“F”表示):(共7分)
Eating is important to everyone. But not many people have time to think about what to eat.
"Fast food is easy," says Mike, a 15-year-old high school student from America. He is enjoying his lunch at McDonald's. "It's quick and it is delicious. If they made healthy food, I wouldn't buy it " He eats fast food about twice a week.
Now each American eats about three hamburgers and four bags of French fries every week. And that is 2,520 calories in all.
A person needs about 2,000 calories for a whole day.
Most Americans know that fast food isn't good for them. But it seems that they can't give it up. In fact, more and more people are eating fast food, and fast food restaurants are part of American life. 96% of American school children know McDonald's.
Because they love the French fries, it's no surprise that some children are getting bigger. In America, 33% of them are overweight. That makes it hard for them to move around, go upstairs and even breathe. They will probably have health problems later in life. Of course it's not just young people who are getting heavier. It's all Americans.
