Rain is of greatly importance to us. Without rain, our water supply would cut off and we would die, such would plants and animals. Therefore, too much rain does a lot of harms to us. It floods fields, towns and cities, cause great losses for us. So far, man’s control over rain had never stopped. If we can gain more effective control over rain, we will enjoy more freedom from the nature. Luckily, we humans have taken steps, such as planting more trees or using weather forecasts, to help avoiding flood damage and protect our water supply.

本文介绍了将牙科检测仪器用于监测珊瑚幼虫生长情况的方法。
13. A routine dentist’s tool may help with more than just oral health. A new study has found that dental imaging scanners can serve as portable
devices to track the growth of baby corals(珊瑚虫)—a crucial predictor of how reefs will fare(生长)during climate change.
Heat stress can kill mature coral reefs and curtail their regrowth. “Growth, reproduction and survival are the main things that we’re always looking at in terms of how healthy reefs are,” says marine biologist Kate Quigley of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. By modeling baby corals in 3-D, researchers can track how well they branch, develop complex shapes and reach reproducing size. If harsh water conditions make corals grow too slowly, a reef won’t recover.
Corals this small are difficult to model in 3-D; researchers can CT scan them, dip them in wax or laboriously put the measurements together from
a commercial 3-D scanner - but these methods can be slow and provide lower-resolution views. So one day, as Quigley’s dentist used a scanning
device that focused light to create a detailed 3-D tooth model, Quigley got an idea. If this device could examine the teeth in detail, she thought, it should be able to scan tiny living corals, too—both teeth and coral are calcium-based and wet.
For a study published in Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Quigley tested the scanning device and found that it offered a cheap, easy and portable way to model baby corals significantly faster and at higher resolution than currently available techniques. This tool could let scientists more easily examine how coral species endure stress.
“Baby corals are critical for reef restoration and recovery from disturbances like hurricanes and heat waves. Unfortunately, they are the stages we know least about because they are so difficult to measure accurately without great expense,” says Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology researcher Joshua Madin, who was not involved in the study. “This paper is a great example of taking a mature technology developed in another field and applying
it to coral reef science.”
1. Why is it important to study the baby corals?
A.It helps to reduce heat stress.B.It helps to protect the coral reefs.
C.It helps to prevent climate change.D.It helps to improve the marine environment.
2. What does the underlined word “curtail” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Guide.B.Aid.C.Limit.D.Follow.
3. What makes it possible to use dental scanning device to scan the corals?
A.The low price of the scanning devices.
B.The similarity between corals and teeth.
C.The excellent skills of the dentists and scientists.
D.The assistance of other technologies such as CT scanning.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Improving Scanning Technology B.Fighting Against Climate Change
C.Saving Coral Reefs with Dental Tech D.Protecting Marine Life with Advanced Scanners

文章主要说明了经济学家Francisca Antman提出饮茶通过提高工人的健康水平推动了工业革命。
14. During its 300 or so years in Britain, tea has changed from the exotic to the ordinary. Historians like to ask why the Industrial Revolution took place here in the 18th century and not elsewhere in Europe or Asia. Several historians argue that sugar played a significant role in fulling workers. Could it be that sweet, boiled water with a mildly addictive plant produced a healthier as well as more energetic population just when England needed labour? That appears to be the case put forward by Francisca Antman, an economist at the University of Colorado.
It is not a new thesis, but Professor Antman provides the first quantitative evidence that tea drinking powered the Industrial Revolution, by increasing the health of workers. Her study reveals that the practice of boiling water for tea lowered death rates by 25% in lower water-quality areas. This “accidental improvement”, she argues, occurred just as people were moving into cities, where the crowding together would otherwise have led to serious epidemics. Instead, the country possessed a healthy pool of labour needed for industrialization.
One of the key moments that shifted tea from a luxury good to a mass market drink came, the Antman paper argues, in 1784 when the tea tax was cut from 119% to 12.5% at one stroke. By the end of the century, even the humblest farmer drank tea twice a day. The East India Company also muscled out an opponent coffee by pushing its tea in the home market. Tea gardens made the drink a cultural custom, as did the worker’s tea break.
Professor Antman argues, “Why England experienced a decline in death rates over this period without an increase in wages, living standards, or nutrition can be explained in part by the widespread adoption of tea as the national drink and increased consumption of boiled water”.
1. What do we know about Professor Antman’s study?
A.It presents a new thesis.B.It offers statistical proof.
C.It focuses on lower water quality.D.It figures out industrial demand.
2. What do the underlined words “accidental improvement” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The popularity of tea drinking.B.The removal of epidemics.
C.The decline of death rate.D.The process of moving to cities.
3. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Tea was ill-received by farmers.B.Coffee made push into British market.
C.Tax cut made tea an affordable product.D.Workers enjoyed tea breaks in gardens.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.British Tea, from Exotic to Ordinary B.A Cup of Tea, a British Cultural Gene
C.Why the British Drink So Much Tea?D.How Tea Affects Industrial Revolution?

本文主要介绍了以前万圣节后美国的南瓜被扔掉产生了温室效应,现在人们正在采取一些措施来处理南瓜。
15. More than one billion pounds of pumpkins are grown in the U.S. every year, and after they’ve been used for Halloween, millions of them will end up in a waste yard.
“Driving around after Halloween, you see so many pumpkins on top of their garbage cans. All of them will go to a waste yard and become methane gas(沼气),” says Kay McKeen, director of an environmental education organization based in Illinois.
Methane is a greenhouse gas. Compared to CO2, it warms the atmosphere in a shorter amount of time, which means it’s a most important cause of climate change. And waste yards—where we send as much as 40 percent of the food we produce—take up 14 percent of methane produced in the
US every year.
That’s why, in 2014, McKeen began a collection event where local people can bring their waste pumpkins to 69 different locations to send them off to the bins, and—of course—smash them to pieces.
“It puts nutrients(营养) back in our soil, it saves water, it doesn’t make methane gas—it’s just a win-win,” says McKeen.
But not everyone has access to pumpkin smashing events, so we asked our newsletter readers how they reduce their pumpkin waste. The answers are various, ranging from baking sweet treats to bringing a pumpkin treat to farm animals.
1. What happens after Halloween?
A.A lot of pumpkins are thrown away.
B.People are busy cleaning up garbage.
C.It is the best time for pumpkin harvest.
D.People use pumpkins to make methane gas.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Pumpkins cause the climate change.
B.Illinois people waste half of their food.
C.Both methane and CO2 are greenhouse gases.
D.Methane is the only reason for climate change.
3. What does the underlined word “smash” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Burn.B.Shake.C.Break.D.Press.
4. What is this text?
A.A letter.B.A speech.C.A news report.D.A health report.
16. Nearly 40 years ago, Peter Harrison, a marine ecologist witnessed the first recorded large-scale coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event. Diving in the Great Barrier Reef(大堡礁), he was shocked by the scene before him. "The reef was made up of healthy corals and badly bleached white corals, like the beginnings of a ghost city," he says. Just months before, the same site was filled with colorful tropical life.
"Many of the hundreds of corals that I'd carefully tagged and monitored finally died," he says. "It was shocking and made me aware of just how weak these corals really are.”
Coral exists together with photosynthetic algae(藻类), which live in its tissues and provide essential nutrition(and coloration). But high temperatures and other stresses can turn algae poisonous. When this occurs, the algae may die or be removed by the coral, a process known as bleaching because the coral's clear tissue and white calcium carbonate skeleton(碳酸钙骨骼)are exposed. If the coral can't reestablish its link with algae, it will starve or become ill.
The widespread destruction Harrison saw in 1982 was repeated on many other Pacific Ocean reefs that year and the next. In 1997 and 1998 the phenomenon went global, killing some 16 percent of the world's corals. With rising temperatures, pollution, disease, increased ocean acidity, invasive species, and other dangers, Harrison's ghost cities are expanding
Scientists suppose that about four decades ago severe bleaching occurred roughly every 25 years, giving corals time to recover. But bleaching events are coming faster now—about every six years—and in some places soon they could begin to happen annually.
"The absolute key is dealing with global warming," says marine biologist Terry Hughes. "No matter how much we clean up the water, the reefs will die." In 2016, a record-hot year in a string of them, 91 percent of the reefs that consist of the Great Barrier Reef bleached.
1. Peter Harrison was shocked when diving in the Great Barrier Reef, because___________.
A.the reefs were made up of precious corals B.the corals were ruined badly and quickly
C.he found a ghost city with tropical life D.he saw the corals he had tagged before
2. Paragraph 3 is mainly about___________.
A.the causes of coral bleaching B.the weakness of corals and algae
C.the elements that make algae die D.the process of building a link with algae
3. The phrase "Harrison's ghost cities" in paragraph 4 most probably refers to___________.
A.global warming B.the polluted ocean C.the white corals D.invasive species
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.With algae living in its tissues, coral's white skeleton is exposed.
B.Solving global warming is the real solution to coral bleaching.
C.The reefs die because the water hasn't been cleaned thoroughly
D.The severest coral bleaching occurred about four decades ago.

Maybe you are someone who does not believe in spending a ton of money on things. After all, DIY does work wonders! In any case, the fact of the matter is that most of us would prefer to spend a little less money on our home decorations. 1 So, let’s see what we can do to decorate our homes with the lowest cost.
Create a splendid wall
By creating a splendid wall, we do not mean building one. What creating a splendid wall means is simply decorating one particular wall in your preferred room with some things you might already have. These things could include the amazing piece of artwork hanging in your bedroom. 2 Books! Books! Books!
Books have sat too long in your shelves, collecting all that dust. 3 While a book or two would certainly promote that coffee table’s sitting grace, a few carefully placed ones could make the desks at your home feel more interesting.

主要介绍了中国传统的装订技术——龙鳞装订。
18. 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The book pages are not anything modern-day readers are used to. When the pages are unfolded, they resemble the bellows of an accordion (手风琴的风箱) or waves 1 (approach) a beach. This is the result of dragon-scale binding (龙鳞装订) , a technique 2 goes back more than 1, 000 years to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) . Hundreds of sheets of thin paper were 3 (delicate) placed on a long strip of paper. They can then roll back into a hand scroll or open up to show a moving picture. The myriad (无数的) sheets of paper tilt up (翘起) and even the 4 (slight) movement of air can make them dance. It was thought that each page seemed like 5 scale, hence the description.
In ancient times, the dragon-scale binding technique was favored by well-off families and 6 (royal) , because it could shorten a book's length and make for efficient reading and indexing. Every sheet of paper needs to be in 7 (it) right place. Any misstep, as little as a millimeter, could produce an eyesore when the whole thing is displayed. However, the complex and time-consuming process 8 (require) by the distinctive bookbinding style has pushed it to the verge of extinction. Today, the only existing ancient book using dragon-scale binding 9 (preserve) in the Palace Museum in Beijing. And the only inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage has been trying to save the art 10 fading away.。
