My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out. Tabby was one such animal.
Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf. Tabby’s chances at adoption seemed remote at best. But one day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, who suffered from epilepsy(癫痫)had seen Tabby’s picture on the shelter’s website. They were interested in meeting her! Most boys would
want a puppy, a dog who could grow with him and run through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would never be able t o do that. But as they say, “love is blind.” After meeting her, they decided to adopt Tabby!
If Tabby’s story had simply ended with her successful adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed but it was what happened after her adoption that some might label as “magical”. As Gary and Tabby did everything together, they became so “in tun” with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary’s seizures(疾病发
作)before they occurred, giving his family a warning that one was about to strike. What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.
How could it be? There are some things that happen in this world that challenge all logic and understanding. Sometimes the best that we can do is to accept a miracle, which we didn’t attempt to explain. Because when you try to explain it, you lose the beauty and wonder of it all.
24. What is the purpose of listing the data in the first paragraph?
A.To stress the necessity of protecting animals.
B.To show the author’s devotio n to adopting animals.
C.To illustrate Tabby’s uniqueness.
D.To prove the difficulty of the work in the animal shelter.
25. What can we learn about Tabby from the text?
A.She was so lovely that she could be easily adopted.
B.She suffered a lot from the disease-epilepsy.
C.She was so strong that she could run very fast.
D.She was homeless and couldn’t see or hear.
26. Why did the author think magic happened?
A.Because Gary and Tabby did everything together.
B.Because Gary was cured in the company of Tabby.
C.Because Tabby could indicate a seizure before it struck.
D.Because Tabby learned to read messages by telegraph.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Love is Blind: An Amazing Dog B.Give Me Food: My Dear Master C.Love is Everywhere: Poor Tabby D.Take Me Home: My Dear Boy
Nobody wants to snack on plastic bags or soda rings, but according to a recent study from the University of Neweastle, we could be consuming roughly a credit card's worth of plastic every week.
Microplastic, which are less than a quarter-inch size and come in various shapes, have polluted the natural world and infiltrated(渗入)our bodies. The first clue to microplastic exposure in humans came around 2013, when scientists discovered plastic particles in seafood prepared for consumption. But in 2019, when the University of Newcastle study was published, the scientific community understood that the problem was considerably broader. Microplastics shed off clothes and tires and have been found in beer, honey, table salt and other food items. We breathe in plastic staying in the air and drink plastic floating in our drinks. It's no stretch to conclude that our exposure is significant. What we don't know is what this means for us.
The amount of evidence collected on this subject is growing rapidly, according to Scott Coffin, a toxicologist(毒理学家). Studies done on mice and rats have found that plastic in their bodies can severely damage cells and cause stress.
Because microplastics are too small to clean up, the only solution is to stop plastic waste at the source. And doing so would take a thorough adjustment, given that plastics are deeply embedded in our economy and lifestyle. Stopping using them would fundamentally affect countless industries, including textiles(纺织业), transportation and manufacturing.
"I think we need to have more studies coming out that are directly related to human health before we see a lot more concern from the general public," Scott said. "It takes a lot to convince people that something that is really convenient for them to use is something they should sacrifice."
The question of microplastics and human health needs more attention—from the scientific community ,the general public, the government and funding groups. The issue isn't being ignored, but it's not being prioritized either.
28. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us about microplastics?
A.Their wide usage in daily life.
B.Their harm to human health.
C.Their significant exposure in humans.
D.The new study conducted on them.
29. What does the underlined part "this subject" refer to?
A.The way that microplastics exist.
B.The pollution caused by microplastics.
C.The relationship between microplastics and human health.
D.The reason for the existence of microplastics.
30. How to solve the problem according to Scott?
A.To cut down plastic production.
B.To carry out more studies on mice and rats.
C.To invent something more convenient than plastics.
D.To promote people's awareness on the harm brought by microplastics.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?
A.Is Microplastic pollution harmful to our health?
B.Why is Microplastic pollution everywhere?
C.Why is plastic harmful?
D.What do you know about Microplastics?
Does happiness have a scent?
When someone is happy, can you smell it?
You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, heating them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports .
For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period.
Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling—though it's unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.
Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scents--particularly their facial expressions--indicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.
"Human sweat produced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell," said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey.
This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.
Researchers have yet to isolate(分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies (香味疗法) could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.
Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.
32. What is the main finding of the new research?
A.Men produce more sweats.
B.Negative emotions have a smell.
C.Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.
D.Women have a better sense of smell.
33. The underlined part "abstain from" in Paragraph 3 probably means _______. A.avoid B.practice
C.continue D.try
34. What is the application value of the new research?
A.Perfumes could help people understand each other.
B.Some smells could be developed to better our mood.
C.Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.
D.Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.
35. We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
A.happiness comes from a scent of sweat
B.positive energy can deepen understanding
C.people need more emotional communication
D.social surroundings can influence our emotions

Healthy See, Healthy Do
Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy. But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases. The location of store displays (摆放) also influences our shopping choices. 36
The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. Studies have found that the products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks. 37 A 2012 study in the Netherlands found that hospital workers were more likely to give up junk food for healthy snacks when the latter were more readily available on canteen shelves, for example. In 2014 Norwegian and Icelandic researchers also found that replacing unhealthy foods with healthy ones in the checkout area significantly increased last-minute sales of healthier foods.
38 It has been working with more than 1,000 store owners to encourage them to order and promote nutritious foods. “We know that the stores are full of cues (暗示) meant to encourage consumption,” says Tamar Adjoian, a research scientist at the department, “Making healthy foods more convenient or appealing can lead to increased sales of those products.”
Adjoian and her colleague s wondered if such findings would apply to their city’s crowded urban checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. 39 Then they recorded purchases over six three-hour periods in each store for two weeks.
Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought anything from the checkout area. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more than twice as often as those in the standard
lines. 40 The findings were reported in September in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that changing more checkout lines would open customers’ eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City.
A.These foods give people more energy.
B.They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.
C.And it may make or break some healthy eating habits.
D.The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods.
E.These findings caught the attention of New York City Department of Health. F.They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter. G.And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior.

During his life, Dr. James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught P. E. and wrote several books. 56 he never thought it very important, Dr. Naismith is today best known for one thing—he was the 57 (invent)of basketball.
58 (bear)in Canada in 1861, he first worked at a special sports school in the USA. One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. 九、读后续写
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic (疫情).
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop. I resisted the urge to check on her. Way too often, Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
"Mom, everyone is hanging out today!" Micah's voice came from upstairs. "Why can't I?"
I went up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas(睡衣), her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. "It's not fair," she said. I have no one I can be with. I can't wait until I'm 18 and can do what I want."
We'd had this conversation before. Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of having to stay at home too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds. "Wanna watch TV later?" I asked. "No, thanks." Micah shook her head.
"In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,'' I added "That's something you can look forward to." I closed the door. I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.
