The 1965 science fiction novel Dune, written by US writer Frank Herbert, has enjoyed great popularity today. Both Star Wars and A Game of Thrones, two great movies, got ideas from it.
The latest film Dune is made according to the book, directed by Denis Villeneuve, was first shown at the Venice Film Festival in September, and arrived in Chinese cinemas on Oct. 22 in 2021.
The film is about a desert planet called Arrakis. Nobody would want to live on Arrakis. There is no water on it. But it has something special: the spice(香料). It gives people godlike powers. It’s also needed for space travel. As a result, the whole galaxy(星系)wants spice.
Getting the spice is dangerous. Sandworms(沙虫)hear the footsteps of people who dig up the spice. The worms eat them. This makes the spice very expensive. For this reason, different families want to control Arrakis.
Sounds exciting, right? It should make a good movie, but older Dune movies are not so much loved. The last time someone made a Dune movie was in 1984. It was not so popular because there were too many characters and it was “a real mess.”
So why can’t anyone make a good Dune movie? US director David Cronenberg said making a good movie is different from making a good book. “You need to betray (背叛)the book,” Cronenberg said.

C. To fight sandworms.

A. They are dangerous and expensive
B. Different families want to control them.
C. They can find people by hearing the footsteps of people.
34. We can infer from David Cronenberg’s words that _______.
A. it is important to follow the book when making a film.
B. making a good film is similar to writing a good book.
C. following the book is not always necessary while making a film.
35. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Ways to Make A Good Dune Film.
B. A Science Fiction Film Called Dune.
C. A Fight between Sandworms and the Spice.

Can you imagine how people in ancient China spent summer without air conditioners(空调)and fridges?
The most common way people then kept cool was to use fans. Many fans had poems or drawings on them. The fans were almost the only help for people to drive the heat away.
Chinese people also started using porcelain pillows(瓷枕)during the Sui Dynasty(朝). These pillows felt cool, so people could sleep more comfortably on them.
People in ancient times didn’t have fridges to store food. Instead, they collected ice in winter and stored it underground, sometimes in wells. When the summer came, they pulled the ice out and put it in their living rooms to stay cool.
As early as the Han Dynasty, some government officials used something that was similar to modern electrical fans. It was made up of a wheel and several fan blades(叶片). A person would pull a rope connected to the wheel to make the blades turn around and produce a breeze(微风). During the Tang Dynasty, people found another way to cool down their houses. They built their houses next to water and used machines to carry water to the roof, where it would run down from the eaves(屋檐). These man-made waterfalls brought cool air into the house.
